Star Racing Southwick Race Report

Courtesy of Star Racing
Southwick, MA. - The AMA MX National Series went into action over the weekend at Motocross 338 for the tenth round of the series. Being the toughest track of the year with its deep sand; it always results to be a true test of man and machinery. DNA Shred Stix/Star Racing/Yamaha was fielding top prospects of #25 Ryan Sipes, #35 Kyle Cunningham, #387 Gareth Swanepoel, #533 Gannon Audette, and #1 Jessica Patterson.

The big highlight came out of Swanepoel in moto one, taking the holeshot, he then settled into a strong pace and held the lead for five laps. Riding at his best and only dropping one position, 2nd Swanepoel held the pace of the leader through the halfway mark which enabled him to capitalize on other competitor’s mistakes. Lap eleven saw the Yamaha pilot takeover the 1st spot, and at this point he showed strength by finding his lines and breaking away. With three laps remaining, he not only increased his lead on 2nd place, but took control of the race and marched on to his first win and podium appearance. Moto two for Swanepoel was just as impressive, as a start of 7th was only a sign of good things. Moving up quickly and finding good form, Gareth took over 5th on lap one. Dicing it out, unfortunately he crashed in a deep sand turn on lap four, and that slated him back to 7th again. Never the one to settle, during the entire thirty minutes without any weakness, Swanepoel secured 5th place which gave him a very commendable 3rd overall.

Audette turned in the strongest performance of his young career by starting in 6th, and after a few great moments he battled right to the end, finishing 4th. Moto two panned out to be a much more trying event, on lap one Gannon found himself starting in 40th after being taken down in a pileup. Forging forward after remounting, put him into a mid pack position by the halfway mark, keeping with a great charge ahead; he’d settle netting 16th place in the moto.

Riding like he hadn’t missed a beat after suffering from low energy levels, in the first moto Sipes got out of the gate in 11th. From there, Sipes put down some solid laps early on, and took his #25 YZ 250F upward into 9th. As time counted down to midway point, Sipes raced his way up to the competitors holding 5th. Using any reserved energy he had, Sipes put in his best effort to snatch a higher placing, but in the end it was just out of reach and he’d finish out in 6th. When moto two came to existence, Sipes could be found in the 7th spot. Continuing the comeback, the focused kid tried to work in the same grand fashion as earlier. At the halfway point though Sipes began feeling ill possibly from swallowing sand, and eventually Sipes would pull off in the next few laps.

Also running was Cunningham who gave his all and put together an impressive first part of moto one by running 7th, but crashes kept him from finishing. Feeling battered and bruised, the team and Cunningham decided that sitting out of moto two, to heal up would be beneficial. On a bright note, Cunningham still holds 4th position in overall points.

Results:

Moto 1 Moto 2 = Overall Finish

Gareth Swanepoel 1st 5th = 3rd

Gannon Audette 4th 16th = 8th

Ryan Sipes 6th 35th = 14th

Kyle Cunningham 34th 37th = 37th

Also adding to the great race results, was Jessica Patterson our WMX pilot who had a devastating moto one, crashing on lap two led to her being unable to restart the bike and a finish of 27th. Moto two was business as usual and a steady performance of leading every lap for the win. However, Jessica’s going 27-1 gave her 6th overall.

Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Rattray Wins at Southwick for Second-Straight Year

Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Rattray Wins at Southwick for Second-Straight Year

CORONA, Calif.- Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Tyla Rattray bounced back from a tough race at Unadilla to take the overall win with a 2-1 result at Round 10 of the AMA Motocross Championship series at MX 338 in Southwick, Mass. Teammate Dean Wilson finished just behind Rattray with a 3-2 result for second overall, stretching his points lead to 38 over second in the standings. Blake Baggett tackled the rain-soaked track both motos to finish fifth with a 9-6 moto score. Broc Tickle showed his speed as he finished fifth in the first moto and came from behind after a crash in the second moto to finish 12th for seventh overall.

Winner of the Southwick National last year, Rattray was faced with different conditions than before as rain soaked the track most of the day. The first moto had him close to the leader for the entire race, but was unable to make the pass. He came out stronger in the second moto, making the pass for the lead early and kept his Pro Circuit-backed Kawasaki KX250F out front until the end for his fourth overall win of the season.

“I’ve ridden in tracks like this my whole life and I am able to have that show a little bit when I come here,” said Rattray. “I wasn’t feeling super confident in the first race, but we made some set-up changes and I felt much better in the second race. The track got really rough during the second moto so I just tried to be smart and ride solid laps.”

Entering the race in Southwick, Wilson had a 25-point lead over second place in the championship standings. After two solid motos in the deep, rough sand, Wilson was able to extend his lead to 38 points with four motos remaining.

“I knew this would be a challenging track for me, but my main goal was to keep it on two wheels and stay up front,” said Wilson. “I didn’t win, but I accomplished those goals and was able to get a few more points in front of second place in the standings. We’ll try and keep it together for the final two rounds. It would be nice to finish out the season with another win.”

While Baggett wasn’t able to start at the front, he worked his way through the pack for two respectable finishes. Baggett made his normal push to the front in the first moto and despite coming into the mechanics area for fresh goggles, still earned ninth. He was ready to redeem himself in the second moto and was able to come from outside the top-15 to finish sixth for fifth overall.

“I am not really a fan of sand tracks and haven’t had much time riding on them,” said Baggett. “Coming through the pack normally isn’t too much of an issue for me, but this track was tough with all the sand roost and then it started to rain pretty hard in the first moto. I knew I couldn’t make it if I didn’t come in for goggles. Overall, I’m just happy to get through this race and I’m going to be ready to get another win.”

Tickle had been hoping to prove himself after bad luck at Unadilla and was able to do that in the first moto in Southwick. In the first moto, he got a mid-pack start and was able to push all the way up to fifth. While Tickle rode with the same tenacity in the second moto, he finished 12th after going down early in the race to finish the day seventh overall.

“I am really bummed with my second moto today because I felt like I was finally showing what I was capable of in the first moto,” said Tickle. “I need to get rid of this black cloud that’s following me. In the mean time, I am just going to have to stay positive and hope that everyone sees the heart I’m putting in each moto. I can say that I’ve never given up, which means something to me.”

The AMA Motocross Championship series is in its final stretch with two races to go as the series heads to Steel City Raceway in Delmont, Pa. After 10 of 12 rounds, Wilson remains in the lead with 438 points, while Rattray moved back into second with 400 points. Baggett is in third with 398 points. Rattray moved into third with 353, while Tickle sit in seventh with 220.

Bel-Ray Racing-Weekend Wrap Up

FARMINGDALE, NJ – August 30, 2011 – Bel-Ray Company, Inc.  – Bel-Ray Racing  Weekend Wrap-Up
Bel-Ray’s professional racers were in action as racing took place in Indianapolis, IN and Southwick, MA this past weekend.
The world famous Indianapolis Motor Speedway was the site of the Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix this past weekend. Coming off DNF’s at the 2 previous rounds, Bel-Ray backed Tech3 racing star Bradley Smith was hoping to turn his bad luck around in Indy. He did just that by qualifying 4th fastest in timed qualifying. Smith rocketed to the front of the pack as the race started and led the field into the first turn. Smith rode a fantastic race and eventually finished in 4th place just off the podium. His fine ride moved him up to 6th place in the series standings. Teammate Mike DiMeglio has been struggling all season long trying to find top results, but could only manage a 27th place finish. The next event for the team will be this weekend in Misano, Italy.
Hurricane Irene brought rain and winds to the MX338 circuit in Southwick, MA this past weekend. TwoTwo Motorsports / Bel-Ray Racing Chad Reed suffered his worst results of the season as he failed to finish either moto after setting the second fastest time of the day in morning qualifying. Despite not scoring any points at all, Reed is still 3rd place in the series point’s standings with 2 rounds left. Bel-Ray Elite racers also performed quite well in the awful conditions. Fredrik Noren finished 21st overall with 22-16 moto scores, Frankie Lettieri finished 23rdoverall with 29-18 moto scores, Dakota Kessler finished 27th overall with 21-23 moto scores, and Bryan Wallace finished 29th overall with 31-21 moto scores. The series continues this weekend in Delmont, PA for the Steel City National.

Hurricane Irene couldn’t stop Barrett Heritage/Eleven 10 Mods Alex Martin from racking up an impressive weekend at the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship at Moto-X 338 in Southwick, Massachusetts. Alex went 10-3 for 4th place overall, he got the holeshot in moto 2, led the first four laps, posted the second fastest lap time during moto 2 on his way to 3rd place and was top American on the weekend. Darryn Durham was impressive too posting 8-13 moto finishes for 10th overall on the day. Bryce Stewart, in only his second race as a professional, is getting used to the fast pace of the world’s best 250cc motocross racers. He narrowly missed the cut this weekend and will focus on doing suspension testing with PR2 this week and is confident that he’ll make the main next weekend at Steel City.

Chad Sanner “ wow, two of our riders in the top ten really makes me happy. Alex was on fire in that second moto. I also couldn’t be happier that he got some much deserved TV time for himself and the team. We’re already back at the race shop having driven 12 hours through torrential rains, dodging down trees and floods. Our private practice track is prepped and ready to start testing to get ready for our home race next weekend at Steel City.

Fiolek Extends Points Lead, Barcia Earns First 450 Win

Torrance, CA: The Southwick MX National at Moto-X 338 in Southwick, MA, hosted round 10 of the 2011 AMA Motocross Championship this weekend. On their Honda CRF250R and CRF450R race machines, the Honda Red Riders overcame the adverse weather conditions caused by Hurricane Irene to score podium finishes, including winning two motos.

At only his second race on the factory Honda CRF450R, American Honda Racing’s Justin Barcia nabbed his first-ever big-bore class win. Barcia got a great start in the second moto and charged into the lead on the opening lap to take a wire-to-wire victory. Despite a DNF due to a mechanical failure while running third in the first moto, Justin’s first win earned him seventh overall for the day.

“I’m so happy right now,” said Barcia. “I know I ride well on sandier tracks, so I was confident I could do well here at Southwick. Unfortunately, I had some bad luck in the first moto but rebounded in the second to take the win, which I’m really happy about. I got a great start and charged hard the whole time. The American Honda team did an awesome job, and I’m thankful for all the support I receive from them and from the GEICO Honda team.”

TwoTwo Motorsports’ Chad Reed had a disappointing weekend, unable to finish either race due to mechanical issues in both motos. Reed remains in third place in the championship chase with two rounds to go.

In the 250 class, privateer Honda rider Alex Martin had his best showing of the season, completing moto one in 10th spot and finishing third in the second moto to secure fourth overall for the weekend. GEICO Honda’s Justin Bogle put in a strong ride aboard his Honda CRF250R in unfavorable racing conditions, rebounding from his 18th place finish in moto one to finish fourth in moto two. Bogle finished a solid ninth overall at only his second Motocross 250 class event of his professional career. After posting the fastest time in practice, GEICO Honda teammate Eli Tomac struggled on the hurricane-drenched track, finishing 19th (14-32). Fellow Honda racer Darryn Durham rounded out 10th overall (8-13).

In the Women’s class, Honda CRF250R riders Ashley Fiolek and Tarah Gieger finished the weekend in first and second, respectively. American Honda Racing’s Fiolek took her third overall victory of the year, going 1-2 for the win, while Troy Lee Designs/Lucas Oil/Honda’s Gieger went 2-5 for second. Fiolek’s win extended her lead in the championship to 30 points over second place, and she has a 53-point lead on Gieger in third with two rounds remaining. Fellow Honda-equipped racers Kasie Creson and Lindsey Palmer finished in seventh and eighth spots, respectively.

Dunlop Tests with the Best

Courtesy of Dunlop Tires
Buffalo, NY: Dunlop’s process of developing tires takes on many forms. Two key avenues include testing at the Dunlop Proving Grounds (DPG) in Huntsville, Alabama and during actual race competition.
Dunlop associate and test rider Clark Stiles recently put his Dunlop Geomax–equipped Kawasaki through its paces in racing conditions, competing at the 2011 AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship at the Loretta Lynn Ranch. At the weeklong event, Stiles earned outstanding results, winning two national championships plus the prestigious AMA Vet Rider of the Year award for his efforts. Dunlop congratulates Stiles on his accomplishments at the biggest amateur national competition of the year.

Stiles went up against stiff competition in both Junior 25 Plus and Vet 35 Plus classes, competing alongside an experienced field of riders, including several former professional racers. Coming close to completing a sweep of the championship motos, Stiles scored 1-2-1 moto finishes in the Junior 25 Plus Championship and went 1-1-2 in the Vet 35 Plus Championship, en route to capturing both titles. Acknowledging his stellar efforts, MX Sports awarded him the Vet Rider of the Year award.

“It was great to win two championships and I’m very honored to receive the Vet Rider of the Year award,” said Stiles. “The level of competition was extremely high. I counted at least 10 riders competing that had previously held a top 100 national number on the AMA circuit, and a few were pro race winners. There was quite a bit of racing experience between us all.

“2010 was my first year racing Loretta’s since 2002. Apart from changes to the venue and track, much about the event is still the same—it still attracts the best racers from across the country and is still a lot of fun! I like racing Loretta’s because it keeps me in touch with the new era of racers. Bikes are so different now than they were in the days of two-strokes. It’s not just about riding the track and testing tires though. It’s more an opportunity for me to stay informed and relevant—check out how the kids are racing and what other riders are able to do on their bikes. I need to stay in touch so I can do my job to the fullest. Winning races isn’t just good for me but also good for Dunlop.”

Clark’s experience as a top AMA professional racer for many years, and his recent exploits at amateur national competitions, furthers the development of Dunlop’s next generation of off road tires.

About Dunlop
Dunlop is the largest supplier of original equipment and replacement motorcycle tires in the U.S. and the only manufacturer of motorcycle tires in North America. With North American operations headquartered in Buffalo, NY, Dunlop has been making and selling high-quality tires in the U.S. since 1923. For more information, visit www.dunlopmotorcycle.com.

Bel-Ray Racing-Weekend Wrap Up
Round 13 of the 15 race World Motocross GP series took place this past weekend at Matterley Basin in Winchester, Great Britain. Following his 2nd place in Loket, Bel-Ray backed TM Factory racer Tanel Leok was prepared to continue his fine results as the season draws to a close. Leok finished a strong 4th in the 1st moto, but was met with disaster in the 2nd moto. While charging early on in the moto, Leok was landed on in a spectacular fashion by another racer and was too shaken up to continue. He should be back in action when the series returns on September 4 in Gaildorf, Germany. Leok is 11th in the overall season points standings.
The final round of the CMRC National Championship Series took place this weekend in Walton, Ontario, Canada. The Kini / Red Bull / KTM / IMX / Bel-Ray Racing team of Kieran Leigh and Mason Phillips showed strong results all season long. This was the teams 1st season in action, and both racers finished inside the Top 10 in the series standings. Phillips was 8th in the MX1 class, while Leigh was 6th in the MX2 class. Two of Bel-Ray’s Elite support racers traveled north to Canada from their NJ home to compete in Walton this weekend as well. Bryan Wallace was 10th, and Dakota Kessler was 28th in the 1st moto. Stormy weather prior to the second MX1 moto forced a cancellation of the moto. Kessler ended the series in 25th overall after only 4 rounds, while Wallace ended the series 34th overall after only attending the final round.

Teammate Petr Smitka spent a good portion of the season on the injured list and has been racing himself back up to speed. Both riders are prepared for an excellent showing in this weekends racing action.
The CMRC National Championship Series concludes this weekend in Walton, Ontario, Canada. The Kini / Red Bull / KTM / IMX / Bel-Ray Racing team of Kieran Leigh and Mason Phillips continued their excellent results at the Sand Del Lee Circuit in Ottawa, with Phillips finishing 7th overall in the MX1 class, and Smitka finishing 6th overall in the MX2 class. Both riders are in the Top 10 in the series standings in their respective classes.

MotoConcepts Unadilla Wrap Up

Courtesy of MotoConcepts

Tommy Hahn:
Tommy showed up in Unadilla injured. He popped his shoulder out twice the week prior to the race. Tommy did good in practice despite the incovenience of an injured shoulder on a demanding track like Unadilla, he was 8th and 7th fastest in the 2 practice sessions. After a bad start in moto 1, Tommy was only 22nd after the first lap and 16th on lap 2 when he dislocated his shoulder again landing in a braking bump. Tommy will need to get surgery to fix this problem he's having since several years and we might not see him race again this motocross season...

Jake Canada:
Jake showed up in New York determined to improve his results. His practice times showed it. Jake was 11th fastest in qualifying, his best so far this season. Bad start for him in Moto 1 too by finishing the first lap in 30th position. Jake rode a strong moto and caught up to 11th. Top 10 was a realistic goal but when he got in Kyle Regal's wheel he was missing a little "juice" after his big charge to catch up. In moto 2, the start wasn't much better being 22nd on the first lap. Jake caught up to 14th and finished the race at the same spot. His moto scores of 11-14 gave him a 10th overall! JC592 can still do better and we'll use the weekend off to be even more ready for the last 3 races.

Ben Lamay:
Ben was 17th fastest in practice and couldn't get a top 30 start in both motos. Are you serious Ben? He crashed a couple times and finished the first moto in 21st. His second moto was way better. He was far back at the beginning but charged all the way to the finish line to get 15th. Same as for Jake, Ben will have 2 weeks to improve his speed/technique/fitness to finish the last 3 races of the season strong!

Rockstar Energy Suzuki- Unadilla Race Report

Courtesy of Rockstar Suzuki

NEW BERLIN, NY– Team Rockstar Energy Suzuki celebrated another strong showing in the 2011 AMA Pro Motocross Championships on Saturday. The Rockstar Energy Drink Unadilla National saw Martin Davalos finish in seventh place overall in the 250 class at round nine of the series in New Berlin, NY. Rockstar Energy Suzuki teammates Ryan Morais, Nick Paluzzi and Jason Anderson followed in 12th, 13th and 16th, respectively.

In the first moto, Davalos was struggling with an injury sustained during practice and was happy to finish up in 14th place. But in the second moto, the Rockstar Energy Suzuki rider put the pain behind him and rallied. Davalos got a good start on his Yoshimura-equipped Rockstar Energy Suzuki RM-Z250 and was right there in the hunt for all 30 minutes plus two laps in the second moto. Once the dust cleared, Davalos had piloted his RM-Z250 to an impressive fifth-place finish, which was good enough for a seventh-place overall for the day.

“This past weekend was all right,” said Davalos. “But in practice, I got hit by a rock and it knocked out my tooth. The nerve was exposed, so I was in a lot of pain in the first moto and I was just trying to survive. But the Rockstar Energy Suzuki team was really supportive and helped me put a lot of heart into the second moto. I’m happy with my performance in the second moto; unfortunately, the tooth threw everything off. But we have a weekend off to regroup and work on some things, and I’ll see the dentist to get everything fixed up. So I’m looking forward to Southwick – it’s one of the toughest races on the circuit and I’ve got to be prepared for that one.”

The Rockstar Energy Suzuki team’s next event is the 10th round of the 2011 AMA Pro Motocross Championship on Saturday, August 27th, at the Rockstar Energy Drink Southwick National in Southwick, MA. You can meet the Rockstar Energy Suzuki riders on Friday, August 26th, from 6 to 7 PM, at Motorsports International, 444 Washington St. (Rt. 20) in Auburn, MA.

Torrance, CA: American Honda is pleased to announce that GEICO Honda rider Justin Barcia will ride for the American Honda Racing team and race a factory Honda-prepared CRF450R at the remaining four rounds in the 2011 AMA Motocross Championship.
“I’m so grateful to have this opportunity to ride the Honda CRF450R in the 450 class,” said Barcia. “I can’t thank GEICO Honda team owners Rick Zielfelder and Jeff Majkrzak enough for allowing me to take advantage of this opportunity. I raced the CRF450R to the overall win at the Bercy Supercross last year and I felt great competing on the bike, so I’m excited to now get the chance to race several rounds in the Motocross series on it. I’m also really looking forward to working with the factory Honda team. I feel I’ve grown a lot as a professional racer over the past three years and this whole experience is only going to help me develop my skills even more.”
American Honda Racing Team Manager Erik Kehoe welcomes Barcia to the Honda starting line-up. “Justin has been a part of the Honda family for many years now, having entered the professional ranks through Honda’s amateur support program,” said Kehoe. “He has a lot of experience racing Honda motorcycles and he’s earned a lot of success in both his amateur and professional careers. Trey Canard showcased his talents aboard the factory-prepared Honda CRF450R last year when he filled in for six Supercross rounds, and obviously that was a significant career opportunity for him, while Cole Seely enjoyed racing several Supercross’ with the team this year. We are pleased to work with Honda-supported teams and give the younger Honda riders the chance to gain valuable experience riding for the factory team when opportunities arise.”

FOOTHILL RANCH, Calif.– Arnette is excited to announce that FMX standout Adam Jones has joined the family as its newest team rider.  Adam will proudly fly the flag for Arnette’s resurgence into the motocross world with the release of its all-new Series 3MX™ goggle in September 2011.

“It’s rad to ride for Arnette,” Adam says.  “I remember seeing the MX goggles years ago and always thinking they were awesome, so to be the first team rider back on the program is an honor.  The goggles work really well, and I'm pumped to be riding for such a cool company that makes such great products!”

Widely recognized as one of the sport’s most progressive riders, Adam Jones is the inventor of such mind-numbing FMX tricks as the Stripper Flip, Cordova Flip, Shaolin Flip and Corpse Flip.  A fierce competitor with a killer sense of humor, Adam truly epitomizes what Arnette stands for: tradition, progression, good times, and going balls-to-the-wall all day, every day.

Adam’s competitive accomplishments are vast, with highlights including a gold medal at the 2007 Summer X Games, winning the overall title on the Dew Tour in 2008, and most recently a silver medal performance in Moto X Freestyle at the 2011 Summer X Games.  Fueled by classic punk tracks and lots of metal, Adam is a dedicated rider who you can always count on to push himself and the sport to the next level.

“We’re super excited to have Adam on the team,” says Arnette Team and Events Specialist Brent Bearden.  “He’s been leading the charge in FMX for many years and his insane riding style truly speaks for itself.  Adam will be a huge asset to the brand, and having him represent Arnette is really amazing.”

In the months ahead, keep an eye out for Adam as he will be wearing Arnette’s new Series 3MX goggle while he competes at all the major contests.

Dripping with heritage, rich design detail and loads of flavor, the Series 3MX features a true anatomical fit, articulating strap attachments for micro-tweak helmet compatibility, posts for tear-offs, and triple-layer Combo Plate face foam that wicks away sweat and maximizes comfort.  The Cool Breeze venting system promotes air-flow while the scratch-resistant Lexan® lens provides UV protection, impact resistance and the best in fog-free visual performance – all at a great value.

Ride Day Benefit for Josh Lichtle Foundation

Stanton, MI– In honor of the late, great Josh Litchle, Michigan Motocross track Valley Motocross will be holding a benefit ride day called “Ride with Wings” on August 11, 2011 in order to celebrate Josh’s memory, as well as raise funds for the new 811 Foundation for Proactive Injury Prevention.
The 811 Foundation was started by Josh’s brother Billy Lichtle, following Josh’s death on July 4th, 2011.  Sadly, Josh passed away after suffering the effects of hyperthermia and heat stroke while racing the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship at RedBud MX in Buchanan, Michigan.
“Josh was an incredible brother, and became instant friends with anyone who ever had the pleasure of meeting him”, said Billy.  “This foundation is very important to our family, as well as for other motocross families who are likely not aware of the serious dangers involved with hyperthermia and overexertion while riding in hot temperatures.”
Billy went on to say that the new foundation aims to overcome that lack of awareness by offering free resources to riders and families who might not otherwise have the ability or insight to properly protect themselves from situations like the one his brother Josh encountered:
“We’re going to be traveling to motocross events across the country and offering training, nutrition, and hydration-based resources by partnering with industry-leading experts and packaging it all into a series of fun and rewarding track-side seminars that kids will enjoy, and parents will appreciate”, said Billy.  “The Ride with Wings event at Valley is a perfect place to get things rolling, especially with some of Josh’s closest friends in attendance.”
Central Michigan track Valley Motocross is hosting and promoting the event with help from local dealership Power Sports Concepts.  Event liaison Buck Riggie says, “we’re creating a fun event to honor the fun memories we all enjoyed with Josh.”
The event will feature events inspired by Josh such as; a one-footer contest, holeshot  elimination contest, pit bike races, and 5-lap motos.  Valley Motocross will also have a silent auction and raffle prizes supported by these sponsors: Believe Clothing Co., Courtyard by Marriot in Auburn Hills, Ithacadirtdevils.com, J-jo's Market of Midland, Defye Clothing, The Buckle of Okemos, Jim Martin Chevrolet of Alma, michigansportpilotrepair.com, Bentley GFX, Bay Cycle, Central Motorsports, C and S Sports Center, O’Neal Motocross, and Leatt Brace.  All proceeds from the event will go to support the 811 Foundation and its mission for proactive injury prevention.

The Legends & Heroes of Motocross to Honor 3 Time National Champion Marty Smith
Merced, CA ~ Three time motocross champion, Marty Smith, will be honored at this year’s Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship at the Unadilla on Saturday, August 13th.

Marty Smith was the AMA’s first 125cc Motocross Champion. During the 1970’s, Smith won three national titles – the 1974 & 1975 AMA 125cc Motocross Championships and the 1977 AMA 500cc Motocross Championship.  He won a total of 18 career nationals and was one of the few to score wins in the 125cc, 250cc and 500cc AMA Motocross Nationals as well as Trans AMA competition.  In addition, Smith won the 125cc U.S. Grand Prix of Motocross in 1975 & 1976.

“Marty Smith, the guy had it all!” states Tom White of the Early Years of Motocross Museum. “Surfer good looks, talent, great style, and a champion’s will to win!  Marty really helped advance the sport of motocross in American and was largely responsible for Honda selling a heck of a lot of CR's in the late 1970’s” he adds.

Smith became known as one of the most stylish riders in motocross history.  According to his mechanic Dave Arnold, there was never a bad photo of Smith.  His riding style was textbook perfect.  He won all his championships with Honda and the company featured him in its advertising, using his long hair and youthful good looks as a selling point.  He was on  dozens of magazine covers riding the legendary Honda Elsinore, donning the famous red, white and blue racing colors. Smith became the first teen idol in motocross and legions of young fans followed his every move.

Alex Moroz, general managing partner of the Legends & Heroes Tour, states “Marty is a great champion who has paved the way for many of us in our sport.  His three time national titles and induction to the AMA Hall of Fame are a testament of his hard work and determination. As a team member of the original JT USA Racing team, Marty was involved in the early days of the brands development and continues today as an advisor".

Professor Gary Bailey writes, “I remember Marty Smith well because he was coming up as I was ending my pro racing career to focus on my motocross schools.  And, at that time, I was looking at what everyone was doing to go faster and to be a great champion.  Marty had it all - the looks, the style and the personality.  If you were looking for the whole package, Marty had it”.

On Friday the 12th of August at the Unadilla Amateur track (the U-2), the Legends & Heroes Tour in conjunction with JT Racing USA will be “Under the Big Top” hosting Marty Smith along with an impressive list of invited former champions including 3 Time National Champ Tony D., National Motocross and Supercross Champion Jimmy Weinert, The Professor Gary Bailey and former National Pro Mickey Kessler.  Additional invited national champions will be listed as they confirm prior to the event.  This will be a motivational presentation evening starting with a “Meet & Greet” of the champs at 7pm, an “Open Mic” session with all the champions followed by a “Silent Auction” and “Autograph Session”.
Congrats Marty, for a job well done!
