Dunlop Announces Partnership with Monster Energy Supercross

Courtesy of Dunlop Tires

Buffalo, NY – Dunlop Motorcycle Tires has reached an agreement with Monster Energy Supercross to be the official motorcycle tire of Monster Energy AMA Supercross, a FIM World Championship, for the next four years, starting in 2017. Dunlop’s official status allows expanded marketing throughout the Monster Energy Supercross series, and more opportunities to interact with its customers.

Dunlop is the longest running sponsor of Monster Energy Supercross, and has won more supercross and motocross titles over the years—143 total—than all other tire companies combined. Additionally, since Dunlop developed the Geomax® MX3S and MX52 in 2013, every single Monster Energy Supercross Championship, and all but one main event, have been won on Dunlop tires.
Dunlop is also committed to supporting amateur motocross through the Team Dunlop program, now in its 11th year. Team Dunlop alumni have won professional championships, including top supercross contenders Justin Barcia and Eli Tomac.

“We’re grateful to Feld Entertainment for the opportunity to expand our interaction with customers, and we’re very proud of our commitment to American motorcycle racing,” said Mike Buckley, Dunlop Motorcycle Tires’ vice president of sales and marketing. “Despite all of the ups and downs in the marketplace over the past decade, Dunlop never stopped supporting both professional and amateur motorcycle racing in the U.S. Racing plays a big part in the development of our tire technology for the public, so it’s an important part of our business. But more than that, we believe in the spirit of competition, and nothing embodies that quite like motorcycle racing. As the only company making motorcycle tires in America, it makes sense for us to partner with Monster Energy Supercross as we continue our commitment to motorcycle racing in America.”

U.S. World Trophy Team: 2016 AMA Motorcyclists of the Year

Courtesy of AMA

PICKERINGTON, Ohio — The American Motorcyclist Association announced today that its 2016 AMA Motorcyclists of the Year are U.S. World Trophy Team members Taylor Robert, Kailub Russell, Thad DuVall and Layne Michael. On Oct. 16, 2016, they accomplished something that no team of American motorcyclists had done before: They won the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme’s International Six Days Enduro.

“This shared achievement of Taylor, Kailub, Thad and Layne is historic,” said AMA President and CEO Rob Dingman. “Generations of AMA members have chased the ISDE World Trophy, and these four riders have finally caught it for all of us.”

The AMA Motorcyclist — or Motorcyclists — of the Year is the individual or group of individuals who have had the largest positive impact on motorcycling in the calendar year. Since 1913, the ISDE has invited the countries of the world to send their best racers. It is a crown that has always eluded American racers. Until now.

“This triumph is unprecedented, and it is my honor to recognize these riders as the 2016 AMA Motorcyclists of the Year,” Dingman said.

The 2016 ISDE was Oct. 11-16 in Navarra, Spain. The U.S. World Trophy Team started strong, powering to a 26.02-second gap on the first day. The team added to its lead on the second and third days, slipped a bit on Day 4, then held fairly steady on Days 5 and 6, finishing 3 minutes, 38.66 seconds ahead of the second-place Great Britain team.

In addition, Taylor Robert won the individual overall at the event, only the second time in history an American has accomplished that goal.

The U.S. World Trophy riders led a strong U.S. effort that saw the Junior team finish second in its division, the Women’s team come in fourth, club teams finish second and third, and American Fred Hoess win the FIM Vintage Trophy.

“For decades, American teams have struggled to win at the ISDE, but in 2016, all those efforts paid off,” Dingman said. “While Taylor, Kailub, Thad and Layne would surely be the first to give credit to lessons learned in previous years, they are the riders who hoisted the ISDE World Trophy for the first time in history.”

Profiles of Robert, Russell, DuVall and Michael can be found in the January 2017 issue of American Motorcyclist, the official journal of the AMA.

Kawasaki & Ryan Villopoto Extend Relationship into 2017

Courtesy of Kawasaaki Motor Corp

Foothill Ranch, CA (December 13, 2016) – Kawasaki Motors Corp., U.S.A. is announcing a continued relationship with Ryan Villopoto. Villopoto joined the Kawasaki family at the age of 14 as a member of Monster Energy® Kawasaki Team Green. He spent his entire professional career, highlighted by 10 AMA Supercross and Motocross Championships, competing aboard Kawasaki KX™ motorcycles. Villopoto, who has an outstanding fan base and social media following, continues as a Kawasaki Racing Influencer, expressing his passion for Kawasaki Team Green, professional racing and Kawasaki products through his own social media channels, at select events and in several “Science of Supercross” segments in the Supercross television broadcast.

“It means a lot to me to be able to continue working with Kawasaki,” said Villopoto. “I’ve been with them for a long time and being around everyone is like being with family. Now that my racing career is over I’ve been able to go out and ride other Kawasaki products and I can’t wait to get on some dual-sport rides and on the new stand-up Jet Ski next spring!”

"As a four-time Monster Energy AMA Supercross Champion, he has built one of the largest and most loyal fan bases in our industry, and his influence in the industry is why we are continuing to build our relationship.”

Format Change for 2017 Supercross Series

Courtesy of Feld Motorsports

December 14, 2016 – Feld Entertainment announced today that the racing format will change for the 2017 season of Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship. H
eat races, Semi’s, Last Chance Qualifiers and Main Events will transition to a timed format beginning with the season opener at Angel Stadium of Anaheim in Anaheim, Calif. on January 7, 2017.

Evolution and progression are natural elements of expansion and with the ever-changing landscape of today’s Supercross racing, this format adjustment will simply give fans more exposure to the sport’s top athletes. Every stadium is a different size and shape throughout the Monster Energy Supercross Championship and lap times can vary exponentially from race to race. This new format will make sure that racers like Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Eli Tomac, Team Honda HRC’s Ken Roczen and defending Monster Energy Supercross Champion, Ryan Dungey get to race in front of their fans for the same amount of time, every race.

“We believe this change will bring the fitness element more into play and provide more excitement for our fans,” said Dave Prater, Senior Director of Operations – Two Wheel, Feld Entertainment.
Once the gate drops, the referee will start the clock. For the 250SX class it will be 15 minutes plus one lap and for the 450SX class it will be 20 minutes plus one lap. That means if defending Champion, Ryan Dungey and Ken Roczen have battled for 20 laps to the finish line but there is still 15 seconds on the clock, they will race two more laps.

There is already a mountain of excitement heading into the 2017 season, and this new announcement should only build anticipation. With the exception of adding semi races to the program a few years ago, the last time a major change was made to the format was the 1985 season when there were two main events. That particular season is regarded as one of, if not the most, exciting in the sport’s history. The format change will add to the drama as we count down to the 2017 season opener in Anaheim.

Fielding a strong two-men squad for the upcoming extreme enduro season Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing will see extreme enduro star Graham Jarvis joined by the team’s newest recruit Billy Bolt, with the British duo set to compete in 2017 aboard Husqvarna TE 300 machinery.

Under the guidance of team manager Andreas Hölzl the two official Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing riders enter the new season with the goal of maintaining Husqvarna Motorcycles’ dominant status in extreme enduro racing.

Enjoying a stellar season that saw him top the overall podium at Erzberg, Romaniacs, Ukupacha, GetzenRodeo and recently at the Roof of Africa, Jarvis has his sights set on keeping his winning momentum going in 2017. The highly experienced racer will lead the team into what’s promising to be another thrilling season of extreme enduro competition.

Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s extreme enduro squad is completed by 19-year-old Billy Bolt. Switching from a promising career in the World Trials Championship the young Brit took the extreme enduro world by surprise in 2016 with his impressive fifth place result at his very first ErzbergRodeo. Combining acute technical skills with a great willingness to learn, Bolt will be aiming high during his first season as a member of Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing.

Billy Bolt –  Husqvarna TE 300
Team Manager - Andreas Hölzl

Andreas Hölzl – Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing Team Manager: “We’re excited to have two great riders in our extreme enduro team for 2017. Graham proved in 2016 that he remains on top of his game. Combining experience with speed I think he will continue to surprise us with his performances for years to come. We’re also happy to have Billy join Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing. Carrying lots of experience from trials Billy has shown he can battle his way through the toughest of challenges in extreme enduro. He’s extremely motivated and has the potential to build a strong future in the sport. With Graham and Billy I believe we have a solid team to keep Husqvarna on top in extreme enduro.”
Graham Jarvis: “2016 has been a great season and I’m already looking forward to the next one. My focus for 2017 will remain on the big extreme enduro events, while I’ll be trying to squeeze in as many other races as possible. I’m also happy to have Billy as my new teammate. We’ve started practising together and I think that’s helped us both. He’s a young and extremely talented kid that’s full of energy. I think he has a lot to give to our team.”
Billy Bolt: “I am really excited to be part of the Rockstar Energy Husqvarna and belong to a group of skilled riders and athletes. I can’t wait for the new season to begin and can’t thank Rockstar Energy Husqvarna enough for giving me the opportunity to take my career to a whole new level as a Husqvarna Factory rider. I still need to learn a lot but I’m glad I’m surrounded by the right people to help me do that. It’s also an honour to be racing alongside Graham. He’s a legend in our sport and there’s just so much I’m hoping to learn from him. I’m sure we’ll develop a great atmosphere within the team and I’m convinced that all the right tools are there for me to battle for the top.”
