Lake Forest, CA ( 3 Jan 12) - The Asterisk Mobile Medical Center (AMMC)
announced today, that beginning with this year’s opening round of the
Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship at Angel
Stadium, it will begin using neurocognitive testing software developed
by ImPACT (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing)
as part of its new concussion management protocol.
Testing will be voluntary for all riders this season and thanks to a
donation from Shoei Safety Helmet Corporation, all baseline testing done
during the Supercross season, as well as any necessary follow up tests,
will be free of charge for all AMA licensed riders. "I began
discussing the ImPACT Test with Dr. Bodnar several years ago after
learning about the serious implications of Second Impact Syndrome.
Unfortunately, head injuries have become front page news in many
different sports, not just motorcycle racing. Shoei is proud to help
support the Asterisk Mobile Medical Center in its efforts to help make
professional motorcycle racing safer", said Bret Milan, Marketing
Manager for Shoei Safety Helmet Corporation.
“The AMMC is very excited to be able to offer another tool to better
identify and treat head injuries and concussions and through the support
of Shoei, we will be able to make the testing available to all
Supercross athletes. This fits in very nicely with our goal to
continually provide the best medical care possible to the riders and
staff of the Supercross Series, stated Dr. John Bodnar, Medical Director
for the Asterisk Mobile Medical Center. The AMMC has reviewed the
current research on concussions and put in place a multi-faceted
protocol that puts the athletes’ safety first while still taking into
consideration the unique variables that are found within the sport of
Supercross and Motocross.
Athletes interested in taking the test or anyone having any questions
can contact Eddie Casillas at 760-575-4878, or Paul R. Reiman, M.D., mxdoc951@gmail.com,
phone 951-461-8684. There will be some time set aside January 5 and 6
(Thursday and Friday) at Anaheim Stadium for athletes wishing to take
the test prior to Saturday’s event.
