2014 Monster Energy Supercross Season Comes to Dramatic Conclusion in Las Vegas with Villopoto as Champion
250SX Grabs Spotlight with Regional Championships and East/West Shootout

AURORA, Ill. (April 28, 2014) – Just one week after Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto became the second rider in Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, history to win four-consecutive titles, the 17-race season will come to its dramatic conclusion on Saturday night in Las Vegas. A capacity crowd is expected to cheer on the world’s fastest riders inside Sam Boyd Stadium on one of the most anticipated nights of the year.

The action from Las Vegas kicks off Saturday, LIVE on FOX Sports 1 at 10:00 p.m. ET/ 7:00 p.m. PT

Media day is Friday, May 2, with a pre-race press conference at 1:00 p.m. ET/ 10:00 a.m. PT featuring the top riders in the championship.

Last weekend Monster Energy Supercross ended a 23-year absence from the New York metro area by making its anticipated return to East Rutherford, N.J., and the inaugural race inside MetLife Stadium. On one of the biggest nights in the history of the sport, Villopoto dominated with his third straight wire-to-wire effort to not only claim his class leading sixth race of the season, but also secure his historic fourth-consecutive world championship.

“It’s been an awesome day here at MetLife Stadium,” said Villopoto, who also achieved the 40th win of his 450SX Class career. “We had a little bit of rain, but I couldn’t believe how well the track held up. It feels great to lock in my fourth-consecutive championship. It’s been a hard-fought season with a few ups and downs, but it was obviously my most consistent, so I’m glad to be able to close it out on top.”

Villopoto’s memorable night capped off an impressive 2014 championship campaign that was arguably the most successful of his four-year reign. While Villopoto’s win total this season is currently the lowest it’s ever been over the last four years, he’s been more consistent than ever before, boasting a 2.13 finishing average and a lowest result of sixth. With a three-race win streak in tow, he’ll come into Las Vegas as the favorite and will look to cement his historic season with a dominant run through to the finish.

With the pressure of the championship now over, the entire 450SX Class field will also be in search of a win to end their respective seasons on a high note. Spearheading that group are Red Bull KTM’s Ryan Dungey, Team Yoshimura’s James Stewart, and Red Bull KTM’s Ken Roczen. The pair of former champions and star rookie has each won previously this season, but more importantly they are engaged in battle for the runner-up spot in the final championship standings. Stewart appeared to suffer a knee injury in East Rutherford, bowing out of competition during the Main Event. However, his status is uncertain as it is assumed he will be on the gate. Dungey didn’t have the result he was hoping for at MetLife, dropping positions en route to a sixth-place finish, while Roczen was only able to parlay the fastest lap in practice to a fifth-place effort.

Based on their respective outings in East Rutherford, motivation will be high for these three riders to get back to the front of the field and battle for the win, or at least a spot on the podium. All three riders have won before in Las Vegas and will look to take advantage of that experience. Additionally, the Team Honda Muscle Milk duo of Justin Barcia and Trey Canard have shown impressive speed in recent weeks and each will be looking to do all he can to break through for his first victory of 2014.

Even though the championship has been decided, the excitement in Las Vegas will be as big as ever thanks to one of the fastest and most thrilling tracks of the season. Las Vegas is known for producing memorable racing and with the motivation the biggest names in the sport are carrying into Sam Boyd Stadium, that trend is sure to continue. Here are additional talking points for the season finale:

The 16 weeks of competition within each of the respective 250SX Class Regional Championships have led to this, one final night in which champions will be crowned and the world will learn which 250SX Class rider is the fastest on the planet. The Eastern and Western Regional Championships are both undecided heading into Las Vegas.

Eastern Regional 250SX Class Race Winner, GEICO Honda’s Justin Bogle

Back East, GEICO Honda’s Justin Bogle is carrying a surge of momentum into the finale following his second career win in East Rutherford combined with the heartbreak suffered by Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki. The Kawasaki-mounted duo of Martin Davalos and Blake Baggett both missed the action inside MetLife Stadium following injuries. Davalos was the points leader coming into last weekend but is officially out for Las Vegas, while Baggett sat third and could still come back to line up on the gate Saturday night. As a result, Bogle took over the points lead and now has a 17-point lead over Davalos and a 54-point margin on Baggett and The Factory Metal Works Honda’s Vince Friese, who moved into a tie for third. While Davalos is the only rider still mathematically eligible to win the title, knowing he will not be in action in Las Vegas has essentially secured the title for Bogle, who will likely use the race as a celebratory effort.

Out West, Rockstar Energy Racing’s Jason Anderson sits in position to earn his first career title with an eight-point lead over Troy Lee Designs/Lucas Oil Honda’s Cole Seely, who is also in search of his inaugural championship. Seely brings the momentum into Las Vegas after winning at the West Region’s previous race in Seattle, but Anderson has four wins this season and a 2.13 finishing average. If he maintains the consistency he’s displayed all season, a fourth-place finish for Anderson will secure the title if Seely is able to grab another win. Together, Anderson and Seely have dominated the Western Regional Championship with six combined wins, 11 podiums, and a finish no worse than fifth. Their battle will be in the spotlight in Las Vegas on Saturday night.

Following the final Main Events of both the Eastern and Western Regional Championships, the top competitors in each division will round out a 22-rider field to determine who stands above the rest in the annual East/West Shootout. The Shootout has consistently been one of the most anticipated races each season as it serves as the one and only opportunity the two regions come together. The winner walks away with bragging rights as the best 250SX Class rider in Monster Energy Supercross. Previous winners of the East/West Shootout is a who’s who of the sport, including Kevin Windham, Ricky Carmichael, Travis Pastrana, James Stewart, Andrew Short, Davi Millsaps, Ryan Dungey, Justin Barcia, and Ken Roczen. Riders who have emerged victorious in this 250SX Class showcase have more often than not gone on to enjoy hugely successful careers, meaning a lot will be on the line this Saturday night.

Last season in Las Vegas, Villopoto capped off his dominant third-straight title run with his 10th victory of the 2013 season. In the 250SX Class, Roczen earned his first career title in the Western Regional Championship while GEICO Honda’s Wil Hahn did the same in the Eastern Regional Championship. Roczen carried the momentum of his title win into the East/West Shootout, where he emerged victorious.

The first race held in Las Vegas was on March 17, 1990, when Jeff Matiasevich won the 450SX Class on a Kawasaki and Jeremy McGrath won in the 250SX Class, also on a Kawasaki. McGrath, a seven-time Monster Energy Supercross Champion, also holds the all-time win record in both classes at Sam Boyd Stadium with four in the 450SX Class and three in the 250SX Class.

Villopoto, a native of the Seattle area, expects to close out another championship-winning year by winning his fourth title at the same venue that the Seattle Seahawks did earlier this year with a Super Bowl victory. The winner of five races this season, Villopoto has established a 48-point lead in the points race and has been the most consistent rider with an average finish of 2.6.

The hotly contested battle for second place in the championship pits two former champions in Yoshimura Suzuki’s Stewart and Red Bull KTM’s Dungey. Stewart, a two-time champion to Dungey’s one, has a three-point advantage.

Team Honda/Muscle Milk’s Justin Barcia will serve as the race’s hometown hero as a native of nearby Patterson, N.J. Currently fifth in the season standings, Barcia, a two-time career race winner, looks to score the first win of his 2014 season to narrow the 35-point gap that Red Bull KTM’s Ken Roczen for fourth place and extend Honda’s undefeated streak in East Rutherford to 5-0.

Villopoto put an exclamation point on his rise to the top at the championship’s last race at Seattle’s CenturyLink Field before 53,927 fans, winning his fifth race of the season. Stewart hoped to spoil Villopoto’s run for the win in the early stages of the race but settled for second overall. Dungey rounded out the field in third.

The hometown win for Villopoto marked the second of his career.

“I don’t think I’ve ever raced in front of a crowd cheering me on this loud. It’s tough to race at home and in the past I haven’t been that stellar here, so to have a race like that is awesome,” said Villopoto, who’s first career 450SX Class win came in Seattle during his 2009 rookie season. “With [James Stewart] and [Ryan Dungey] standing up here next to me, getting a win is huge. I’m not thinking about the championship right now, but it does feel good to have an opportunity to wrap up the title in New York in a couple weeks.”

Through the first five races of the Eastern Regional Championship, Davalos battled with teammates Adam Cianciarulo, who at one point had the points lead but suffered a season-ending shoulder injury, and Blake Baggett.

MetLife Stadium will serve as the final stop of the Toyota Triple Challenge that posted $250,000 and a 2014 Toyota Tundra for the winner of the third stop in Anaheim, Arlington, Texas and East Rutherford, N.J. Stewart has a one-point lead over Stewart in this mini-series.

Fun Facts:
  • The host venue of the Super Bowl has also played host to Monster Energy Supercross in the same season 15 times
  • A NFC team has won the game 10 times and with the Seahawks win this year at MetLife, the AFC has won six times
  • Villopoto can become the first rider to win a Monster Energy Supercross title in the same year that his hometown NFL achieved the same accomplishment

The state-of-the-art MetLife Stadium, in the greater New York Metropolitan area, is not only one of the newest venues in the country, but it sits on one of the most iconic pieces of land in the history of major sports competition. For more than 30 years, The Meadowlands, which was torn down a few years ago and replaced with the beautiful MetLife Stadium, has been the site of some of the biggest events in sports and entertainment, including a five-year period with Monster Energy Supercross in the late 80s and early 90s.

Tickets are available at the MetLife Stadium Box Office, all Ticketmaster outlets, charge by phone (800) 745-3000, or online at www.SupercrossOnline.com or www.ticketmaster.com. Practice and qualifying begin at 12:30 p.m. and the Main Event starts at 7:00 p.m. Premium Club tickets are $85 Adult/Child; Club $55 Adult/Child; Field $45 Adult/Child; Endzone $35 Adult/Child; Value $25 Adult/Child. Courtesy of MX Rewind

Clean Out Your Old Dirt Bike Parts and Collectables!
NEW BERLIN, NY- April 15, 2014- Building on the popularity of last year’s swap meet, Unadilla MX is pleased to release information on this year’s edition, taking place at the MX Rewind on May 30 – June 1, 2014.
The nature of a Swap Meet is that vendors don’t need a fancy set up – a tarp, table, or tail gate does the trick for displaying those old Dirt Bike treasures!. So clean out your garage, basement, man cave, storage area and be a part of the fun! The swap Meet at MX Rewind is also a great way to connect with fellow hobbyists who are looking for hard to find items, old memorabilia, parts that are no longer in the mainstream market, and hidden treasures.
Vendors can set up a 10′x20′ spot for the entire weekend or any part thereof for $75, which includes all admission fees for up to two people. The swap meet is an excellent chance to clean out your garage, your hobby room, or your storage area and join in on the fun at MX Rewind.Spots are limited and you can contact nwmaicocz@yahoo.com or info@unadillamx.com to reserve your spot.
The swap meet is only one feature at MX Rewind. Bike shows, vintage racing, formal and informal meet and greets with over fifteen motocross legends, autograph sessions, bench racing, nightly entertainment, and good times with old friends await racers and fans alike.
MX Rewind celebrates motocross and motocross history and keeping the traditions alive. Whether you have an old beater to race or not, if you love motocross and want to relive the good old days (or want to find out what you missed in the good old days!), this weekend is one you will not want to miss. So, mark your calendar for May 30-June 1 as the hills of Unadilla come alive with the sounds of all things vintage.
Event information, racing information, pre-entry links, and advance sale ticket information can be found at www.mxrewind.com. Further help is available by using info@unadillamx.com or by calling 607/965-8450.

Nicoletti and Friese to Substitute for Brayton and Grant

Courtesy of JGRMX

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. (April 9, 2014) – After holding the consecutive starts record at 44 straight main events in Monster Energy AMA Supercross Justin Brayton was unable to compete last Saturday in Houston, Texas due to a spectacular crash in the first timed practice resulting in an injury to his hand and knee. Brayton had sustained a broken bone to his foot during his heat race the week prior in St. Louis but was able to race.
Just after the start of the main event in Houston two riders collided behind Josh Grant inadvertently sending an out of control rider directly into the back of Grant causing him to crash violently. Grant was badly shaken up and unable to continue. Grant was also injured the week before during his heat race in St. Louis.
Both Brayton and Grant were thoroughly evaluated this week and the conclusion of the riders and team is that the cumulative effect of these injuries on both Brayton and Grant warrants a rest and recovery period for proper healing and reduction from further harm.
Phillip Nicoletti, who is a member of the Toyota/Yamaha/JGRMX Team with support from St. Lawrence Radiology and N-FAB will race in Seattle in place of Brayton. Vince Friese, who races for The Factory Metal Works Team in the 250SX East Championship Series will race as substitute for Grant. Brayton and Grant’s status will be continuously evaluated and they will return to racing as soon as safely possible.
Nicoletti, number 38 and Friese, number 42 will race the Seattle, Wash. event at CenturyLink Field this Saturday, April 12. Fox Sports One will broadcast the race live starting at 10:30 p.m. (EST). Timed qualifying will stream live on supercrossonline.com beginning at 5:00 p.m. (EST). The final segment of Supercross, Behind the Dream will air on April 13 at noon, (EST) on CBS.

RCH Racing Soaring Eagle Signs Weston Peick

Courtesy of RCH Racing Soaring Eagle

San Diego, CA (April 9, 2014) – The RCH Racing Soaring Eagle has signed top privateer Weston Peick to race the Lucas Oil Pro Motorcross Championship for 2014. Peick will continue to contest the remainder of the Feld Motor Sports® 2014 Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship series as a privateer, before joining the RCH Racing Soaring Eagle effort.

Answering the question posed in Racer X Magazine and all over the Internet, “Why Not Weston?” RCH team principal Ricky Carmicheal says why not, indeed. “I’m glad to have Weston a part of the team.” Peick earned seven amateur titles without support from factories and raced a privateer since turning pro in 2009… until now. “We are excited to give him the opportunity and look forward to working with him to help him achieve his goals,” claims Carmichael.
“He has a great work ethic that will mesh well with our team personnel to get the best result possible,” adds Carmichael. “It should be a lot of fun!”
Despite being a self-professed “goon” at Supercross early in his career, the former high school football player has shown marked improvement in the stadiums this season, including Top 5 at Anaheim 3 and the San Diego rounds. However he is really looking forward to returning to the outdoor nationals. “This is a great opportunity to be surrounded by one of the best riders of all time and one of the best factory teams to help me get to the next level,” said an elated Peick.

Loyalty is important to Peick and his father, and they requested to finish the Supercross season as a privateer in order to honor their sponsor commitments. This is a request that RCH Racing Soaring Eagle certainly respects and is one of the reasons why Peick was offered the opportunity. “I want to Thank all my current sponsors for their outstanding support for the Supercross series… without them, this opportunity wouldn’t be possible,” says Weston.
“We are so happy to have the opportunity for Weston to work with RCH Racing,” says his father Louie who has been working on Weston’s bikes throughout his career. “Thanks to all our sponsors that helped us get to this level.”
Look for Weston Peick to make his debut on the RCH Racing Soaring Eagle Suzuki RM-Z450 at Glen Helen on May 24th when the 2014 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship kicks off.
About RCH Racing Soaring Eagle:
RCH Racing is in its second season of the partnership between Ricky Carmichael and Carey Hart to campaign the Feld Motor Sports® 2014 Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship series as well as the 2014 Lucas Oil Pro Motorcross Championship. Ricky Carmichael merged his Suzuki relationship and technical development with the established five year marketing giant of Hart & Huntington Racing in 2013. The RCH Racing Soaring Eagle Team continues its partnerships with Suzuki, Fox, Dodge, Sycuan Casino, Yoshimura and Bel-Ray. Covington Signs a Two Year Deal to Remain in Europe

Courtesy of Team CLS Kawasaki

Kawasaki Press Release

American teenager Thomas Covington has signed with Team CLS Kawasaki Monster Energy to remain in Europe to contest the FIM World Motocross MX2 World Championship for the remainder of 2014 and 2015.

The 18-year-old native of Alabama had his first experience of motocross outside the USA when he raced the European MX2 British round in Matterley Basin last year. Having impressed everyone with his speed and style, he raced the opening three rounds of this year's FIM MX2 World Championship with the Kawasaki Racing Team in order to prepare for his debut in the US Motocross Championship. On the podium in the second moto at the opening Grand Prix in Qatar, Thomas enjoyed this experience so much that he tried to find a solution to stay all season in Europe, and to race the remaining fifteen rounds of the World Championship. Thanks to all the parties involved, he has now signed a two year deal with Team CLS, and next weekend in Italy he will be teammate to Arnaud Tonus and Dylan Ferrandis in the MX2 class, while Alessandro Lupino will switch to the 450 Kawasaki CLS to finish the season in the MXGP class.

Steve Guttridge (Kawasaki Europe Race Planning Manager): “Thomas had been welcome into the Kawasaki Racing Team for the first few GPs as a taster and now really sees his future here. It’s great that together with the support of CLS, Kawasaki in the US, Monster Energy, Youthstream, Alessandro Lupino and Pro Circuit, we could offer him a ride for the rest of this season and next!”
Jean Jacques Luisetti (CLS team owner): “We are of course very pleased to welcome Thomas, who raced with us last year in England. There was an opportunity to sign him for 2014 and 2015, and we couldn’t miss it; with him and Dylan we’ll have two very talented kids with us next season, as Arnaud and Alessandro have to move to the MXGP class. We offered Alessandro the possibility to start next weekend riding a 450; it’s a good opportunity for him to show what he can do in this class and I’m sure that his smooth riding style will suit our 450 perfectly. Concerning Tommy Searle; he has never stopped training physically, and we expect to see him back in Holland or Spain; Thomas will be based with him in England, and when Tommy returns to racing we’ll have two riders in the MX1 class thanks to Kawasaki and all our partners.”

Thomas Covington: “I am so stoked to be on the Monster Energy CLS Kawasaki team! I know they have great bikes as Tonus and Ferrandis are sitting 1st and 3rd in the series. I've been on Kawasaki since I was 8 years old so it's great to continue the relationship with Kawasaki and Monster Energy. It was like a dream to score a podium result in Qatar; for sure the next races were not as good but that didn’t affect my motivation. I’d like to thanks KRT who offered me a ride for the first few GPs, but now I’m impatient to be in Italy where I will race for the first time with the CLS Kawasaki.”

Mitch Covington: “"I am really proud of Thomas for deciding to stay and compete for a World Title for the next two years. Not many American riders with a Pro Circuit contract in hand would leave the comforts of home, but Thomas loves the thrill of the crowds around the world and knows he can go back home and do well with a good showing here for the next few years. The team and family over at KRT took great care of Thomas and that made the transition and the decision to stay a lot easier Kawasaki USA, Team Green and Pro Circuit have guided him all the way and we could not have asked for better partners on this long journey to get to this level. The other big help to get us here was Traxxas RC Cars; the owner Mike Jenkins has been a great friend to Thomas since his mini days and Thomas will always be a Traxxas guy. Thomas did not get here on his own - he had lots of help and guidance. Oh well, MXGP's here we come!”

Thierry Chizat Suzzoni (Monster KRT Team owner): “It has been a pleasure to have Thomas with us, but the deal was to help him just for the first few GPs. As we are focused on the MXGP class it was not possible to keep him for all the season, and it’s great to see that he loves the GPs and will stay with Kawasaki.”

Rory Mead Injury Update

—PRESS RELEASE—
Rory Mead standing on podium
April 3, 2014 — Maxxis/KLIM/DirtWise KTM Race team Pro rider, and current GNCC XC2 Pro class Championship leader, Rory Mead sustained a devastating crash approximately half way through the final lap of Sunday’s Rd. 3 of the GNCC series held near Morganton, NC.
While placed in 2nd place, and making a charge toward the lead position, Mead inadvertently ran off the trail and struck a tree straight onat significant speed. The resulting impact produced severe fractures with the C5 and C6 vertebrae in his neck.
Mead was transported to the Johnson City Medical Center trauma hospital that evening and operated on to stabilize the fractures and fuse the vertebrae from C4 through C7, and is still currently situated there. Pieces of the shattered bones were pushing into the spinal cord area (removed during surgery) but apparently all indications from the MRI tests is that the cord was not severed and there was no bleeding in the cord. There is a significant amount of swelling to the cord area though.
Currently though Rory has no feeling or movement from essentially the arm pit/nipple region and down as expected with a C5/6 injury. He has limited use of his arms, but no awareness of his three outside fingers, again as commonly found with this injury.
Mead was quite philosophical about his current situation. “No one ever likes to get hurt, but it is a fact that we need to face every now and then. As they say, it is what it is, but you can be assured that I am ready fight with all my might and do whatever is necessary to give myself the possibility of a full and quick recovery. I am so thankful for the outpouring of support that my family, friends, and the Offroad motorcycle community had provided to me since the accident – it has been overwhelming! I want to thank my team mate Jason Thomas, and fellow competitor Jesse Robinson, who sacrificed their own race result to stop and stay with me for the duration, plus to all of the other riders who stopped during the race to offer assistance.”
Maxxis/KLIM/DirtWise Race team owner Shane Watts had this to say, “Rory was riding so well in this race, and in the previous races so far in 2014 – he definitely had established himself as the rider to beat for this year’s Championship! But then when your rider doesn’t come around to the finish when expected, and news starts to filter through of a serious injury, your stomach just drops. The GNCC track crew did a wonderful is clearing Rory from the race track and taking the necessary measures on getting him to hospital. Rory has been in good spirits, and then 48 hours ago (36 hours post injury) he was able to slightly feel induced movement of his right foot only. Obviously this is what we would like to hope is a very promising indicator of further future improvement however unfortunately we also know that no further improvement may happen. Our goal is to provide Rory with all of the top level options and tools to maximize his recovery to 100%, and to hope for a complete recovery as soon as possible. This just may end up being a very long and arduous journey for Rory with his recovery and we will support him through it every step of the way to the best of our ability.”
Mead should be adequately stabilized within the next two/three days to allow for transport to a spinal rehab facility, which most likely will be the acclaimed Dodd Hall facility operated by the Ohio State University (OSU) in Columbus, OH.
To help offset the extensive medical expenses incurred with a serious spinal cord injury the following fundraising efforts are in place to help Rory Mead during this difficult time.
Firstly there is a direct donation option set up by Rory’s Ohio based riding partner, Pro Supercross racer Levi Kilbarger, through the GoFundMe organization. There has been an overwhelming level of support shown so far as the total donation amount to date nears $20,000

The link to the Rory Mead donation account is: http://www.gofundme.com/7y8o0g

Next Monday, April 7, the DirtWise team, along with help from their team sponsors and Pro rider Steward Baylor, will announce and commence a Fundraising Raffle where a huge amount of awesome items will be on offer for the lucky winners. This raffle will run online throughout the week and will then culminate that weekend with a ticket sales booth at Rider Registration at the GNCC in South Carolina. The winners will be drawn immediately following the Bike Pro race on Sunday afternoon.
