Geico Honda Indianapolis Race Report

Courtesy of Geico Honda

March 24, 2018 (Indianapolis, Indiana) – The insertion of a 250SX East/West Showdown midway through the Monster Energy Supercross Championship was bound to create chaos, and the racing in Indianapolis lived up to that hype. GEICO Honda’s Jeremy Martin overcame it to score the victory over the best from both divisions. It’s Martin’s first victory of the season, a follow-up to back-to-back runner-up finishes at Daytona and St. Louis. On a crazy night, though, even his win went through the ringer. A post-race penalty resulted in Martin losing seven points from his total points haul, but he keeps his race victory.

Martin was penalized for failing to single each jump in a triple jump section where the red safety lights were being displayed. Instead, Martin rolled the first jump and doubled the next two. Series’ officials penalized him seven championship points, but his race victory stands.

Two weeks ago, when Martin scored his first podium of the season in Daytona, he said he felt like a win was coming. The Indy win over the combined talents of the East and West divisions marks Martin’s welcome return to the center of the podium.

“I got the holeshot and rode good for a little bit. Then I saw the boys behind me!” said Martin. “The track was pretty tricky. I’m not going to lie. I had a couple sketchy moments out there. I saw Luke [Renzland] was in second. I kind of looked around. I kind of just was trying to maintain it. I had a couple close calls out there. But we were able to lead from start to finish and have a good race.”

Martin was unsure immediately after the race of what the final decision on his penalty would be. Martin and the GEICO Honda team didn’t deny that Martin single-doubled through the triple.

“From my perspective I came around the turn and I didn’t see the medic flag waving,” Martin said. “I saw the lights on the triple. I’m like, ‘I think those are red.’ So I rolled the face of it, and then I looked and saw that the area was clear and there was no medic flags after that, and then I doubled it. It was an honest mistake. There’s not much to say other than that. We’ll see what the outcome is.”

With the seven-point penalty included, Martin is now 19 points down on the leader in the 250SX East standings.

250SX West competitor Chase Sexton had a forgettable night, with multiple crashes leaving him unable to finish the race. He was not injured, however.

“Indy was a bit of a roller coaster,” said Sexton. “Felt good all of practice and was ready to bring it to the night show. I got a bad start in the heat but worked my way through the pack to fifth. In the main I got another bad start and was close to last. As I was making my way through, I kept making mistakes and actually went down twice. I ended up messing up my front brake. We tried to fix it mid race but it kept locking up so I wasn’t able to finish. Really bummed on how the night went since I felt so good during the day but that’s racing. Ready to make Seattle a good one!”

GEICO Honda’s other 250SX West rider, Christian Craig, continued competing in the 450SX division as an injury replacement with team Honda HRC. He finished 16th in Indianapolis, his first finish outside the top ten since jumping up to the 450.

The series gets a weekend off before the West Region resumes in Seattle on April 7th.

PODIUM FINISH FOR TEAM BABBITT’S/MONSTER ENERGY®/KAWASAKI RIDER JACOB HAYES IN NAMPA

Courtesy of  Kawasaki

The Ford Idaho Center in Nampa, Idaho hosted the first round of the 2018 AMA Arenacross Race to the Cup this weekend as the points reset for the final five rounds. Team Babbitt's/Monster Energy®/Kawasaki rider Jacob Hayes returned to action and raced his KX™250F to a second place podium finish, while Idaho native Ryan Breece collected his first 250AX Class podium and second consecutive AX Lites West Coast Class victory. Two-time defending champion and Team Babbitt's/Monster Energy/Kawasaki rider Gavin Faith entered the weekend with the championship points lead but was unable to compete after crashing in an afternoon practice session and is currently undergoing further evaluation.
Hayes got off to a second place start in 250AX Main Event 1 with GPF Babbitt's Online Kawasaki supported rider Ryan Breece in seventh. A battle for the lead quickly began as Hayes applied heavy pressure on the leader until the halfway point in the race, eventually making the pass stick to take control of the race lead. Hayes went on to win 250AX Main Event 1, while Breece made his way up through the pack to finish fourth. In Main Event 2, it was Hayes capturing the holeshot and Breece rounded out the top five. Hayes would hold onto the lead until the halfway point of the race before he was passed and shuffled back to second, which is where he would remain until the checked flag. Breece raced his way up to third place to capture his first 250AX Class podium. Hayes would finish second, just ahead of Breece in third.
"I'm pumped on how the whole day went," said Hayes. "We were a little off in qualifying, but I got a great start in the heat race and rode smart and consistent to get the win. My starts were on point tonight and I am really happy to have won the first main after last weekend's crash. Second place is a great place to start in the Race to the Cup. Looking forward to next weekend."
"I'm still pretty shocked that I got on the podium," said Breece. "I can't thank everyone enough who has helped me get to this point. My starts were really good all night, which put me in the right position to make a few passes and get on the box. I'm so stoked to get on the podium in the 250AX Class and win my second main event in the AX Lites West Coast Class."
In the AX Lites West Coast Class, Breece rode his KX250F to a second consecutive win by leading every lap, while teammate Isaac Teasdale finished in second place and Kawasaki rider Preston Taylor rounded out the podium in third, making it an all green podium in Idaho.

KAWASAKI TEAM GREEN™ CAPTURES EIGHT TITLES IN FREESTONE

Courtesy of Kawasaki

The 2018 spring amateur nationals kicked off this past weekend at the James Stewart Freestone Spring Championship in Wortham, Texas. Kawasaki Team Green™ weathered the Texas heat and high winds to capture eight championships and 14 podium finishes.
The star-studded Team Green roster started with Ryder DiFrancesco and Jett Reynolds who battled bar-to-bar with one another all week. DiFrancesco captured two titles on his KX™85 in the 85cc (9-12) class and Mini Senior 1 (12-13) class, while Reynolds followed that up with three titles in the 85cc (9-13), Mini Senior 2 (12-14) and Super Mini 1 (12-15) classes.
Moving up to the KX™250F, Monster Energy® Kawasaki Team Green teammates Garrett Marchbanks, Seth Hammaker and Lance Kobusch competed in the 250 A Pro Sport and Open Pro Sport classes. Fans lined the fences and cheered as the future motocross and supercross stars took off. The No. 182 of Marchbanks proved to be unstoppable in "The Lone Star State" by winning four of the six races en route to both the 250 A Pro Sport and Open Pro Sport championships. Hammaker showcased his raw speed and talent by finishing second overall in the 250 A Pro Sport class and fourth in the Open Pro Sport class. Teammate Kobusch went on to finish eighth in both pro classes.
"It was a good week," said Marchbanks. "I started off the week a little slow but turned myself around by grabbing some holeshots and moto wins on Thursday and two more wins on Friday to come home with both pro championships. I really felt like myself the last two days and I believe it showed on the racetrack."
Kawasaki rider Jesse Flock was another standout rider who rode impressively throughout the week on his KX250F. Flock raced with fearless speed and around the Freestone racetrack and went on to finish second in the 450 B Limited class and captured third place finishes in the 450 B and 250 B Limited classes. Along with the No. 64 of Doc Smith who captured the 450 C Junior (12-18) championship, secured two second-place finishes in the 250 C (12+) Limited and 250 C (12+) classes and a third place in 450 C (12+).
"It was a very safe and successful week at Freestone," said Team Green Manager Ryan Holliday. "Everyone rode well and kept it on two wheels, which at the end of the day is the most important factor for us and all the families involved. It's always a pleasure to race at this facility, the whole Freestone racetrack crew did a great job and we look forward to returning in 2019."

PODIUM FOR CLEMENT DESALLE IN SPAIN

Courtesy of Kawasaki

Clement Desalle of the Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team reinforced his third place in the FIM World MXGP Motocross Championship with his second podium in the three rounds of the series run to date.
The Belgian turned around a disappointing performance in qualification at the Red Sand facility one hundred kilometers north of the Spanish Mediterranean port of Valencia in a confidence-building performance as he raced in the leading group in both point-scoring races. Rider and team found an excellent solution on the set-up for the starts overnight and he was able to start fourth before quickly taking over third in race one, holding it until an intense mid-race challenge from the series points leader cost him one place in the later stages of the race. Despite not starting quite so well in race two he was quickly able to push forward to third place again and held the position with confidence until a late challenge from the series leader again saw him take the checkered flag in the fourth position. This was sufficient to claim third overall on the day and strengthen his third place in the series standings.

KRT teammate Julien Lieber also made his best performance to date in his rookie season in the MXGP class, racing to seventh overall. His first moto ride was particularly impressive as the twenty-three-year-old put in two strong passes late in the race to finish fifth and he again rode with great confidence in race two to advance from an initial fourteenth after an incident with another rider to take the checkered flag ninth. The two strong performances also see him move into the series top ten.

Clement Desalle: "It's positive to get this podium, as yesterday the feeling was not so good. We changed our strategy for today and that helped me a lot, especially for the starts; if you don't get a good start it's difficult to get a good result, as the class is really competitive. I'm happy as I got a good start in race one and I was fighting all race to finish in fourth place; my second start was not quite so good but I had a good feeling and made many strong passes during the first two laps to come back to third. I again finished fourth; I had a strong battle with Febvre for most of the race but he couldn't pass me and it's good to have a second podium since the beginning of the season. Now we will continue to work hard; third is good but my goal is to win."

Julien Lieber: "It was a good weekend for me, even if my second race wasn't as good as the first one as another rider pushed me out of the track during the first lap. I crashed and had to recover from fourteenth to ninth but I again had a great feeling on the bike. My first race was really good; I was seventh for most of the race but in the last few laps I passed two riders to finish fifth, my best result since the beginning of the season. It's great to finish both races in the top ten, I must say that today I had a really good feeling with the track after we worked successfully with the team to find bike settings which suit me even better."

Maxime Desprey and Alessandro Lupino of Gebben Van Venrooy Kawasaki Racing each scored nine world championship points in Spain and now hold seventeenth and eighteenth in the series.

Troy Lee Designs/Red Bull/KTM’s Smith Tightens Points Battle With Fourth Place at Indianapolis Showdown

Courtesy of Troy Lee Designs/Red Bull/KTM

INDIANAPOLIS, IN – March 24, 2018 – Troy Lee Designs/Red Bull/KTM’s Jordon Smith put in a great ride in fourth amongst a stacked field as the eastern and western regional classes came together for the first of two showdown races this season. Smith’s consistency over the past few races combined with a win in Daytona has put him only 10 points out of the lead with three rounds remaining. Western Regional rider Shane McElrath and his Eastern Regional teammate Sean Cantrell both fell victim to a first-turn pileup. While McElrath was able to make it back up to 13th place, Cantrell suffered another crash late in the race and scored 22nd.
Troy Lee Designs-Red Bull-KTM’s Smith Tightens Points Battle With Fourth Place at Indianapolis Showdown
Smith has been on a roll as of late and nearly grabbed another podium finish inside Lucas Oil Stadium. He was able to avoid the first-turn pileup thanks to a great start and near holeshot early in the race. He settled into third, but was overtaken just after the halfway point and held onto fourth, helping Smith to close in on the points leader once again. Each weekend he’s been able to pick off points and is now only 10 points out of the lead.
“It would have been nice to collect a few extra points in third, but to keep chipping away is a positive that we’ll take tonight,” said Smith. “It’s not over until it’s over and I will do everything I can to make my team proud. We get a few weeks off to regroup but I’m ready to get back out there in Minneapolis and try to close up the points gap.”
Troy Lee Designs-Red Bull-KTM’s McElrath at Indianapolis
In his first race back since the Western Regional riders went on break, McElrath started his day strong as the third qualifier. He would go on to finish second in his heat, setting himself up for a good gate pick in the main event. When the gate dropped, McElrath was in good position until a rider clipped a tuff block, causing a chain reaction that stalled the riders behind the block. He came around the first lap in 16th and had to work his way forward through a stacked field, eventually making it up to 13th.
“I really wanted to capitalize on tonight’s showdown format, but after getting pushed out on the start it was an uphill battle,” said McElrath. “The track was pretty tough, as we expected, but there weren’t as many passing opportunities as I’d hoped. It’s been a long time waiting to come back and then have a showdown race made it pretty interesting. We’ll be ready for Seattle, no matter what the weather tends to throw at us.”
Troy Lee Designs-Red Bull-KTM’s Cantrell at Indianapolis
As a rookie, Cantrell hasn’t experienced the pressure of a showdown format before. He had a tough heat race and was forced to go to the LCQ where he finished second. When the gate dropped for the main event, Cantrell was able to avoid the pileup but still had opening lap troubles and came around in 19th. After a few laps, he got into more of a groove and was moving up, but ended up going down in the latter laps of the race and was tallied 22nd.
“This is a tough year to be a rookie with the triple crown formats and the showdown races, but I’m trying to use every opportunity to learn something new,” said Cantrell. “We get a few weeks off and I still have a goal to keep it inside the top 10 for the final few rounds.”
Troy Lee Designs-Red Bull-KTM’s KTM Junior Supercross Challenge at Indianapolis
Even with all the excitement around the East/West Showdown, the KTM Junior Supercross Challenge riders put on a show of their own inside Lucas Oil Stadium. Mikey Sandidge got out to the early lead and couldn’t be stopped. The same went for the runner-up Grayson Townsend. The big move of the night went to the No. 1 of Austin Meads, who started seventh on the first lap, made the pass for the final podium spot on the last lap.
The three-man squad showcased the SE Air Jersey Metric Navy with the SE Air Pant Metric Navy along with the SE Air Jersey Metric Red and SE Air Pant Metric Red. To make it easy to differentiate the coasts, McElrath wore the Navy kit while Smith and Cantrell wore the Red kit. Both kits were topped off with the SE4 Carbon Helmet Metric Navy.

Privateer Tevin Tapia Injury Update

Courtesy of  Road 2 Recovery

Encinitas, Calif. (March 25, 2018) – The 2018 Supercross season is proving to be a very brutal year for injuries. This past Saturdays race at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, IN claimed another rider with severe and season-ending injuries.
Privateer rider, Tevin Tapia was critically injured during timed practice when he cross-rutted going up the finish line and endoed, leaving him with no other options but to jump off his motorcycle, landing feet first. The impact from his fall broke his pelvis, lumbar vertebra and caused other damage to the surrounding area. “I was immediately scared out of my mind with the worse pain I have ever felt in my life” said Tapia.

Directly after his crash Tapia was taken to a local hospital in Indianapolis where his injuries were evaluated and surgery scheduled for this Monday, March 25, 2018. His doctors have made a game plan to repair his broken L-3 and L4, fix the level 1 trauma to his pelvis and control the internal bleeding. As of now, the suggested course of action for repairs involves two screws and one plate to be installed with the hopes of fixing the fractures. Tapia can’t bear any weight yet but is expected to make a full recovery and will have no difficulty walking.

This is a very positive prognosis; however Tevin Tapia is a true privateer and the funds needed to cover his surgery, mounting hospital bills, and his future required physical therapy is going to be extensive. Not including the cost, once cleared from the hospital getting Tapia transported back home to Menifee, CA as comfortable and pain-free as possible. His road to recovery is going to be long and he will need all the support from his family, friends, and fans that he can get. If you are able, you can help Tevin by clicking the below link and donating to his Road 2 Recovery cause page. If you are not, all positive thoughts, prayers, and messages can be left in the message box in the link as well for him to read.

MXGP SHUTOUT CONTINUES AT REDSAND

Courtesy of KTM

3rd Rd. Motocross 2018 – Redsand (Spain)
A busy and immaculate Redsand MX Park hosted the third round of twenty in the 2018 FIM Motocross World Championship and Red Bull KTM Factory Racing remain undefeated in terms of both motos and Grands Prix with Tony Cairoli taking his first spoils of the year on the KTM 450 SX-F and Pauls Jonass ruling MX2 once more with the rapid KTM 250 SX-F.
MXGP returned to Spain for the first time in over a year and was welcomed by a new Grand Prix host. Redsand MX Park, close to the town of Castellon on the east coast, is well known to world championship riders as a winter testing and training venue. For the third round of the 2018 campaign the facility underwent a significant upgrade and the mix of hard-packed red soil but with loose terrain in sections was fast and ‘busy’ through a series of jumps and obstacles.
Watched by 26,000 fans Cairoli was in the mood for full points following runner-up positions in both Argentina and Holland. The Sicilian stalked Romain Febvre for seven laps of the first moto and crossed the line almost five seconds in front of teammate and championship leader Jeffrey Herlings. In the second outing #222 seized the holeshot. He passed Gautier Paulin and massaged a race-winning margin over a battling Herlings to record his first 1-1 of the campaign. The Grand Prix of La Comunitat Valenciana delivered the defending number one’s 84th career success and 300th top three moto finish. Cairoli’s achievement also ensured at least one victory in all fifteen of his world championship seasons since 2004.
Herlings went 2-2 and lamented a poor start in the first moto and a first lap tumble in the second. The Dutchman had a tough day cutting through the pack – setting the fastest lap both times - but the victor of Argentine and Dutch rounds secured a third consecutive trophy and ties on points with Cairoli at the tip of MXGP. Despite the same number of triumphs and second places the FIM have given the red plate to Cairoli for round four by virtue of his status as the most recent winner.
Glenn Coldenhoff was satisfied with a second moto result of 7th. The Dutchman was limited by a mediocre first race getaway which meant a hard slog to 11th. 8th position overall for Glenn allows #259 to maintain 6th spot in the standings.
Cairoli: “I’m really happy about the weekend. We made some changes to the bike for improvement and I was very pleased to get back from a bad start to second on the first lap of the first moto. I struggled a bit to pass Romain. I had the better speed but took a while to make it happen. It was good to win. A holeshot in the second moto and Paulin was aggressive and with a good rhythm but I could pass him and control the situation. I knew Jeffrey was coming back strong but we could respond with some good lap-times. Everything went well and I’m really happy to win here in Spain. It is my 84th win; it’s really nice and the season is going good. I’m happy to fight with Jeffrey and the other guys. The red plate doesn't matter too much at the moment. It is about trying to improve and we are trying different things but we have a good set-up.”
Herlings: “It wasn't a good weekend and I came to this track aiming to win but I messed up both starts; the second one wasn't too bad but I crashed on the first lap and had to come back from somewhere around fifteenth and was still able to fight my way up to Tony. The bike we have is really solid but we might have some new parts to try for the starts and hopefully we can improve with that. Once the starts are better – and I also need to look at what I am doing on the bike - then we’ll be able to put ourselves in a much better position. The competition is strong here and it is tough to come through the pack; every weekend has been like this and I either barely make it or run out of time. I have a great team behind me and we’ll be working on it in the coming weeks.”
Coldenhoff: “Definitely a better second moto! I made some mistakes in the first: I started to wheelie, pulled the clutch and had too much wheelspin. Coming through - like I had to do on Saturday also - was really tough. The second moto was better and I could run with the top guys and it was where I needed to be. Eighth overall and I think sixth in the standings so we are looking quite good.”
Pit Beirer, KTM Motorsports Director: “I am definitely proud of this fantastic team because they put in some incredible work but the outcome is amazing; I’ve never seen a motocross team on this level. Having two riders who are so strong fighting for the win every weekend and for the points lead in both classes is outstanding. I hope we can keep these boys healthy and go through the season. For sure there will be some up and downs but we have to enjoy these moments. It was another incredible weekend and we cannot forget that Marvin Musquin won in Indianapolis [AMA 450SX] so it was a clean sweep for us across the world.”
MX2
A close battle for MX2 Pole Position between teammates Pauls Jonass and Jorge Prado on Saturday was decided by just half a second and won by the world champion for the second time this year on his KTM 250 SX-F.
Prado excelled with passionate home support to take second place behind a strong and resolute Jonass who extended his unbeaten run to five motos in the first race. The Latvian was superb to control proceedings from the front in the second sprint: beating Thomas Kjer Olsen and a flying Darian Sanayei with Prado coming home in 3rd. The classification means the second consecutive 1-2 for the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing team, Jonass is unbeaten in 2018 and is the first rider since Jeffrey Herlings in the summer of 2016 to win six motos in a row.
With a perfect score Jonass has a 30 point advantage in the standings over Olsen. Prado is 3rdand another 15 points back.
Jonass: “It is nice to start the season with six wins from six motos but motocross is never easy! Many people at home have been saying ‘that looked like an easy race for you…’ but every moto is difficult. You need to stay focussed. This weekend was not easy because Jorge was there in the first moto all the time and in the second Darian, Jorge and Thomas were close! I tried not to make any big mistakes and stayed calm to control the race. I enjoyed the track today.”
Prado: “It was a good weekend and I am happy with my second place. The first moto was good, the second I struggled a bit but we’ve been working hard so I’m pleased. For sure everybody wants to win here and Pauls is difficult to beat! Lately he has been riding even better than usual. So we’ll keep trying!”
MXGP breaks for Easter weekend with round four taking place at Arco di Trento and the Pietramurata circuit for the Grand Prix of Trentino (the first of three visits to Italy this year and with the calendar now extended to twenty events due to the late inclusion of Bulgaria to the slate) on April 7-8.
