Double podium for HRC

Courtesy of American Honda

The Indianapolis Supercross saw Team Honda HRC cohorts Cole Seely and Trey Canard collect a pair of podium results aboard their factory CRF450R race machines, with Seely taking second and Canard finishing third. Seely continues to showcase himself as not only the top rookie in the 450SX class, but also a solid candidate to earn a race win by season’s end. After posting the fourth-quickest qualifying time in daytime practice, the Californian finished second in his heat race, advancing directly to the main event. Seely took advantage of a good gate pick, launching off the line to a third-place start and quickly making the pass into second. Learning from his mistake in Daytona the previous week, Seely remained patient, following the leader for much of the race. His runner-up finish vaulted him from seventh in the championship standings to fourth.

Canard secured the final podium position, but not without difficulty. Once again, the Oklahoma native was hindered by a lackluster start that left him 11thafter the completion of the opening lap. Canard immediately set about making up ground, and by the midway point he sat third, which is where he finished. It was his seventh podium appearance of the year.

NOTES
  • Team Honda HRC was working without its team manager in Indianapolis, as sickness kept Dan Betley at home. Taking his place for the weekend was crew chief and longtime Honda HRC team member Jason Haines.
  • During the day’s timed qualifying sessions, a mere .447 seconds separated the top six riders. Trey Canard secured the second-quickest time at 51.391 seconds, just .019 seconds off the pace of GEICO Honda’s Eli Tomac, who notched the quickest time at 51.372. Cole Seely was fourth with 51.489.
  • The Indianapolis round has been kind to Seely, who last year earned his first premier-class podium, while taking time out of his 250SX West campaign to serve as a substitute rider on Honda’s factory team. His runner-up finish this time around equaled his best 450SX result, as he also finished second at Anaheim 3.
  • The factory Honda CRF450R currently holds three of the top four positions in the series points standings. Canard and Tomac remain in second and third with 204 and 169 points, respectively, while Seely has used strong results at the last couple of races to advance to fourth place, nine behind Tomac.
  • The Honda CRF250R also had a solid night at Indianapolis, occupying an incredible nine of the top 10 positions in the 250SX main event. Best of the Red Riders were GEICO Honda’s Justin Bogle and RJ Hampshire, who finished second and third, respectively.
  • The day after the Indianapolis Supercross, Fox Sports 1 aired the fifth episode ofBehind the Dream, and Team Honda HRC was featured heavily. The episode touched on Canard’s faith and recovery from setbacks, and cameras showed him testing and racing. Also included was footage of Canard and Seely on a mountain bike outing in California, plus interviews with the two riders and their mechanics.
  • Next weekend, the Honda Red Riders head to Detroit for round 12 of the AMA Supercross Series. Prior to the race, the riders will take part in a dealer appearance at Grace Motorsports in Kimball, Michigan, on Friday, March 206-7:30 p.m.

THE FOCUS: Honda and “The Brickyard”

The night before the gate dropped at Lucas Oil Stadium, Team Honda HRC’s Trey Canard and Cole Seely, along with GEICO Honda’s Eli Tomac, Justin Bogle, RJ Hampshire and Jordan Smith, participated in the Westfield Powersports Supercross Party, which this year took place at legendary Indianapolis Motor Speedway, six miles from Lucas Oil Stadium. Prior to the festivities getting underway, Canard, Seely and Tomac had a special opportunity to venture onto the track to kiss the fabled Yard of Bricks, a tradition that began in 1996 to pay tribute to the venue’s long history. Despite the rain, riders also got to sit in an official IMS pace car for a couple laps around the famous circuit.
“Getting to come to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway was an awesome experience,” Canard said. “I know you’re only supposed to kiss the bricks if you win, but you can’t pass up such a unique opportunity. I was also hoping it may bring a little good luck, since so many great racers have done the same thing. It was really special to ride in a pace car and check out the track from that perspective—talk about cool!”

Red Riders have a proud history at the Brickyard, as members of the Repsol Honda team (one of the five squads supported by HRC) have earned victories at the circuit’s annual MotoGP event for the last five years. Dani Pedrosa won in 2010 and ’12, Casey Stoner topped the 2011 event, and current reigning MotoGP champion Marc Marquez was the winner in ’13 and ’14. This year’s Indianapolis MotoGP round will be held August 7-9.

Honda is also one of two manufacturers supplying engines that are used in the prestigious Indianapolis 500. This year’s race takes place in May, when Ryan Hunter-Reay, of the Honda-powered Andretti Autosport team, will defend his title.

Tickle cards eighth in Indy SX

Courtesy of Suzuki Racing

RCH Suzuki Factory Racing’s Broc Tickle turned in a solid eighth-place finish in Saturday night’s Monster Energy AMA/ FIM World Supercross Championship race at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis as team-mate Ken Roczen missed the event to recover from an ankle injury that will keep him out of the next two races.

The RCH Soaring Eagle/ Jimmy Johns/ Suzuki Factory Racing rider was consistent throughout the day, finishing fifth in his heat and second in his Semi to transfer into the Main Event, but was slightly dejected at the end of the night after coming into ‘Indy’ expecting more.

Said Tickle: “We made progress each time we went out but I still struggled with speed a little bit. I was really looking forward to Indianapolis because I finished fifth last year. I knew that the track was going to be really rutted and normally I excel in those conditions. I wanted to put 20 solid laps together, which I feel like I did, but I was still off-the-pace a little bit. I’ve been training pretty hard during the week so I’m hoping a little bit of rest will re-energise me for the Detroit Supercross this weekend. I need to be stronger during the middle stages and at the end of the Main. I felt like I struggled towards the end of the race and normally that’s not the case for me. That tells me I might be doing a little too much during the week.

“We’re all going to Soaring Eagle on Tuesday so I’m excited to have some fun with our sponsors this week. I’ll go back to California first, ride a little bit on Monday; and rest after that. I feel like I have all the tools to be on the podium and that’s why I’m frustrated. Obviously eighth is solid but I don’t want to just be solid anymore. I want to be on the podium.”

Monster Energy Supercross returns to Detroit this weekend when the series visits Ford Field for

Round 12 of the 2015 Supercross Championship.

Indianapolis 450 Supercross Results: 1. Ryan Dungey (KTM), 2. Cole Seely (Honda), 3. Trey Canard (Honda), 4. Weston Peick (Yamaha), 5. Davi Millsaps (Kawasaki), 6. Andrew Short (KTM, 7. Josh Grant (Kawasaki), 8. Broc Tickle (RCH Suzuki), 9. Chad Reed (Kawasaki), 10. Jake Weimer (Kawasaki).

Tough night for Yoshimura Suzuki Racer Blake Baggett in Indy

Courtesy of Suzuki Racing

Expectations were high at the Indy Supercross for Blake Baggett, coming off a podium finish the week before at Daytona, but the night didn’t go as planned in Lucas Oil Stadium.

The Yoshimura Suzuki Factory Racing rider crashed while running seventh, got pinned under his machine; and then had to wait nearly a full lap before track marshals could free him. Once back on track Baggett turned in solid lap times, but he was a lap down so had to settle for 15th, his worst result of the season.

While Baggett’s Indy Supercross didn’t go as well as hoped, the silver lining was that he was not hurt in the crash and did not lose a position in the standings. He still stands eighth in the AMA/ FIM World Supercross points after 11 of 17 rounds.

The Yoshimura Suzuki team with Baggett and James Stewart started out the weekend as part of one of the biggest Supercross parties of the season. Indy’s pre-event party was held at the historic Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Thousands of fans showed up to get to meet the riders and have posters autographed. Baggett and Stewart got to go out and actually get photos taken on the Speedway’s famous Yard of Bricks.

“That was really cool,” Stewart said. “I’ve never been on the actual track, so getting to be right there on the yard of bricks was a nice experience. I got to meet with a lot of fans and sign some autographs. Everybody’s been really supportive. At the race I got to help Blake a little bit, by picking out some lines on the track. I’m looking forward to getting back to racing as soon as I can. I appreciate all the fans hanging in there with me.”

Baggett started off the day qualifying 11th. He and fellow rookie Jason Anderson created a bit of a stir when they came together during the first timed practice, but officials worked everything out and the rest of the day’s qualifying went smoothly.

Baggett missed going directly into the Main from his Heat race, but easily won his Semi to secure his starting spot in the final. Baggett started the race in 10th on the first lap and as usual was using the deft handling of his Yoshimura Suzuki RM-Z450 to steadily work his way up the leaderboard. But then he went down on lap six.

“The track was super-technical with lots of ruts,” Baggett explained. “But the bike set-up we found was working really well. Things were going good, I was working my way towards the front and I just made a mistake, caught a rock and went down.

“I was stuck under the bike for a whole lap and just had to wait until someone came over and got it off me. The whole time the bike was still running and the chain was grinding away on me and I was pinned down. I got up and was a lap down and did the best I could. I’m going to come back strong next weekend and see what we’ve got.”

After getting back underway Baggett rode solid laps and was able to salvage some points. It was his first time outside of the top-10 since round two at Phoenix.

The series resumes next weekend in Detroit’s Ford Field.

Indianapolis 450 Supercross Results: 1. Ryan Dungey (KTM), 2. Cole Seely (Honda), 3. Trey Canard (Honda), 4. Weston Peick (Yamaha), 5. Davi Millsaps (Kawasaki), 6. Andrew Short (KTM, 7. Josh Grant (Kawasaki), 8. Broc Tickle (RCH Suzuki), 9. Chad Reed (Kawasaki), 10. Jake Weimer (Kawasaki). 15. Blake Baggett (Yoshimura Suzuki).

KTM hires industry veteran as VP of PG&A

Courtesy of KTM

KTM North America, Inc. is excited to announce the hiring of Greg Blackwell to fulfill the recently created role as Vice President of Parts, Garments & Accessories (PG&A).

The need for the position came in late 2014 as the PG&A department experienced exponential growth in KTM’s PowerParts, PowerWear and SpareParts divisions; accounting for 20% of the brand’s success. The consumer demand for this department called for a qualified candidate to take the lead on all operations; the answer was clear to bring Blackwell onboard to assist its ongoing expansion.

“Growing our parts and accessory business is the top priority for us moving forward,” stated Jon-Erik Burleson, President of KTM North America, Inc. “We are fortunate to have the opportunity to bring Greg, with all of his experience in the aftermarket side of the business, to our team. Combining his experience with the KTM brand will be a big step for us, and most importantly, our dealer’s business.”

Prior to his role at KTM, Blackwell spent 14-years with the LeMans Corporation, parent company of Parts Unlimited/Drag Specialties, as the Vice President of Sales and Marketing. His vast experience with industry aftermarket products created a perfect match for the position KTM was looking to fill.
Blackwell is excited to lead the expanding PG&A Team and commented, “Our goal is to increase communication between KTM personnel and KTM dealers, expand support to our district sales managers, develop authentic, co-branded product that offers unique sales opportunities for our dealers while delivering exciting product that pairs with KTM’s “READY TO RACE’ philosophy.”
Blackwell continued, “KTM and I are excited to grow the PG&A branch of the company which will allow us to offer larger opportunities and margins to our dealers. I am confident our initiatives will excite the customers of KTM as they will be able to further immerse themselves in the lifestyle and culture that is KTM.”
