RIVERSIDE, Calif. (March 5, 2012). In St. Louis, Mo. this past
weekend, a record breaking crowd of almost 60,000 was in attendance to
watch the ninth round of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross series.
The
MotoSport.com/TiLUBE/Foremost Insurance duo of Nick Wey and Justin
Sipes completed the daytime qualifing sessions with a season-best eighth
for Wey and 23rd for Sipes.
Wey and Sipes were both in heat race
two and would be racing against the other 18 riders on the line for the
nine main event transfer spots. Both riders started in qualifying
positions and were under immediate pressure to maintain their spots.
Going into lap five of eight Wey and Sipes sat in ninth and 10th place,
respectively. An untimely mistake by Wey on lap seven caused him to go
down and Sipes’ quick reaction avoided a collision with his downed
teammate. That pass moved Sipes into the final transfer position but he
would need to keep the momentum going as Bobby Kiniry was approaching
quickly. On the last lap, Kiniry snuck by and Sipes was in jeopardy of
not qualifying. With two corners left, a charging Sipes was able to
pressure Weston Peick into making a mistake and he capitalized, taking
the last transfer spot.
Wey would rebound to put in an impressive ride en route to the LCQ victory.
In
the main event, the MotoSport.com/TiLUBE/Foremost Insurance riders made
it cleanly through the first lap with Wey in ninth and Sipes in 17th.
Wey would have his work cut out for him if he wanted to keep that top 10
position, while Sipes was focused on logging steady, consistent laps
and working his way through the pack. Wey battled with Mike Alessi for
nearly half the race before making a clean pass and breaking away on lap
14. With the laps winding down, Wey found himself in the familiar 10th
position, which is where he would ultimately finish for the third week
in a row. Sipes would go on to finish 15th.
“Qualifying was good
but my crash in the heat was frustrating,” said Wey. “I’m glad I won the
LCQ but I needed a better start and to ride faster in the main. I am
going to spend some time on a Daytona-style track in Florida and that
will hopefully help me make the move inside the top-10 on Saturday
night.”
“I was finally able to keep it on two wheels in the
main,” said Sipes. “I felt solid until about halfway through the race
when I made a few mistakes and tightened up. I feel like I am getting
better every weekend.”
Next weekend the series travels to the
Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Fla. for the 10th round
of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross Series. Be sure to stop by the
MotoSport.com/TiLUBE/Foremost Insurance team truck to show your support
and to have your picture taken with Nick Wey, Chris Blose, and Justin
Sipes from 12:30 pm – 5:30 pm. See you there!
