Spotlight Shines on Road to Supercross as
AMSOIL Arenacross Heads to Louisville
Steve Roman Sits Atop Eastern Regional Arenacross Lites Class
AURORA, Ill. (January 13, 2014) –
As a result of the groundbreaking Ricky Carmichael Road to Supercross
program that has been implemented for the 2014 season and beyond, AMSOIL
Arenacross was privileged to host the memorable professional debut of
one of its rising stars. MyPlash/Star Racing
Yamaha’s Aaron Plessinger took advantage of lessons learned from a
podium result in his very first night of AMSOIL Arenacross, featuring
Ricky Carmichael’s Road to Supercross, competition to earn an impressive
underdog victory on the final night of action
inside Baltimore Arena during the second round of the championship.
This
weekend, Plessinger, championship points leader Zach Ames, and reigning
three-time champion Tyler Bowers will lead their competitors into the
third round of the season from Louisville, Ky., and the Freedom Hall.
The first one-night round of 2014 will commence on Saturday, January 18,
signifying AMSOIL Arenacross’ first visit to “Derby City” since the
2011 season. Racing begins at 7 p.m. ET.
The
purpose of the Road to Supercross is to not only establish a formal
development system for riders looking to compete in Monster Energy AMA
Supercross,
an FIM World Championship, but also showcase the talents of the future
stars of the sport. New pros now have the ability to hone their talents
on highly technical tracks while adding depth to the field of
competitors in AMSOIL Arenacross.
Plessinger
emerged as one of the most promising amateurs in the country late last
year and he showed quickly that his talents are enough to make
him a surefire up-and-comer. In his professional debut last Friday,
Plessinger acclimated himself to AMSOIL Arenacross by winning the
Eastern Regional Arenacross Lites Class Main Event. He carried the
momentum into the Arenacross Class, winning the opening
Main Event in his very first attempt and following it up with a
fifth-place result in the second Main Event, which ultimately landed
Plessinger third overall.
On
Saturday, Plessinger’s desire to win was obvious. He controlled his own
destiny the night prior and came up just a few points short of an
historic
feat. Plessinger asserted himself at the front of the field throughout
the night and even took himself out of contention in the Eastern
Regional Arenacross Lites Class Main Event on Saturday to focus on
claiming victory in the premier division. He started
strong by finishing fourth in the first Main Event and grabbed the
holeshot in the second Main Event, leading all 15 laps to cement his
inaugural overall victory as a professional.
Now,
Plessinger has already assumed control of ninth place in the Arenacross
Lites point standings and is arguably the hottest rider in AMSOIL
Arenacross.
As a native of Ohio, Plessinger has roots in arenacross racing so his
quick adaption to the professional ranks isn’t a complete surprise.
However, his quick ascension to the top of the experienced field of
competitors is, and he has put his new rivals on alert.
The
rider eagerly looking to end Plessinger’s wave of momentum is Ames and
his Babbitt’s Monster Energy/AMSOIL Kawasaki presented
by Maxxis squad. Ames has been the most consistent rider through the
first four nights of action and as a result carries an eight-point lead
into Louisville as the Arenacross Class points leader.
Additionally,
both Babbitt’s Monster Energy/AMSOIL Kawasaki’s Bowers and
Motosport.com/MJM Express/Spinechillers Racing Kawasaki’s
Michael McDade are hoping to bounce back from rough outings on Saturday
night in Baltimore. McDade’s ninth-place overall finish cost him the
points lead, while Bowers is still looking to get his title defense on
track, despite winning the opening night of
the 2014 season just over one week ago.
In
the Eastern Regional Arenacross Lites Class Championship, Traders
Racing Kawasaki’s Tony Archer posted solid results during
both nights of action at his hometown race in Baltimore to take over
the early points lead. While he’s still in search of his first win of
the season, Archer’s consistency has him carrying a five-point lead into
Louisville.
Louisville has always been one of AMSOIL Arenacross’ most beloved stops.
At the championship’s
previous visit to the Freedom Hall in 2011, Kentucky native Bowers
emerged victorious in front of the hometown crowd for his third win of
the season en route to his
first career AMSOIL Arenacross title.
Action from Louisville begins at 7 p.m. ET on Saturday night.
The entire AMSOIL Arenacross season will air on FOX Sports 1, including re-airs on FOX Sports 2.
