LAKEWOOD, Colo. – The Red Bull KTM Factory Racing Team scored valuable 450MX championship points on Saturday with a fourth-overall from Marvin Musquin at Round 3 of the 2018 AMA Pro Motocross Championship in Lakewood, Colorado. In the 250MX class, Troy Lee Designs/Red Bull/KTM’s Alex Martin finished second overall with a solid pair of podium finishes at the Thunder Valley National.
Additionally, it was a successful day for the KTM-supported Rocky Mountain ATV/MC – WPS – KTM team as Blake Baggett put forth a consistent day with a pair of thirds to claim third-overall, while his teammate, Benny Bloss, earned a notable fifth-overall with one of his best career performances in the 450MX class.
In 450MX Moto 1, Musquin got off to a fourth-place start, where he battled for a top-five position through the first three laps before the race was red flagged due to a downed rider on the track. With a fifth-place gate pick, Musquin lined up once again for a second gate drop and made his way back to fifth with 19 minutes remaining in the re-started race. From there, Musquin moved into fourth and maintained that position through the checkers. In Moto 2, Musquin once again put himself into a top-four position off the start and battled for third early on before settling into the top-five in the first two laps. He quickly moved up to fourth on lap three and rode his own race for the remainder of the moto to close the day with a pair of fourth-place finishes to capture fourth overall.
Musquin: “It was definitely a tough day for me. I struggled, even though I felt like I rode good here last year, it’s always a unique one here with the altitude and trying to work on the bike but the team did a great job and I felt better and better every single time I was going out there, so that’s a positive. Unfortunately, I never got a great start and I found myself both motos behind the top three – and even top four – and charged through the motos but missed a little bit of speed today. Unfortunately, it was only enough for two fourth positions so definitely not what I want but that’s the way it is right now and we’ll move forward to hopefully have a better feeling on different tracks.”
250MX
In 250MX Moto 1, Martin got off to a fifth-place start where he battled his way to a third-place finish. His Troy Lee Designs/Red Bull/KTM teammate, Jordon Smith, followed suit with fourth place in the first moto. In Moto 2, Martin powered his KTM 250 SX-F off the line to capture the holeshot and early lead. Martin led the first six laps before getting passed, where he fought hard to maintain the lead battle for the remainder of the race, finishing second in Moto 2. With (3-2) moto finishes, Martin secured second-overall for the day. Smith rode to a top-five finish in the second moto, where he captured fifth-overall for the day.
