WPS/Fly Racing Constructs On Site MX Test Track

In celebration of 50 years of doing business in the powersports industry, WPS and Fly Racing recently completed construction of an on site motocross test track and proving grounds at its Boise, Idaho headquarters. “We needed a more efficient way to test and develop Fly Racing products that allows us to gather instant feedback,” stated Craig Shoemaker, President and Owner of WPS and Fly Racing. “Having a motocross track right here at our Boise facility will not only enable us to develop new products easier and bring them to market quicker, it also allows us to conduct our own photo shoots on sight.”
Using a hands-on approach, Shoemaker, along with his brother Jamison (long time employee and resident photographer), logged countless hours on the company’s bulldozer and front-end loader, shaping and sculpting the track into a top-notch facility. In addition to its use as a test track, Shoemaker decided to pass along the benefits of an on sight motocross track to its employees through scheduled company ride days. “We’re a company that rides motorcycles and that’s filled with motocross enthusiasts, so we decided to give something back to our employees through scheduled track days. It’s been a huge hit and a lot of fun for our employees to ride dirt bikes together—not to mention a great way to build team spirit and morale. A special thanks to everyone who helped make this track a reality, and to Tallon Vohland at Acerbis for sending us the track markers.”

Motocross/Supercross team owner to be inducted into AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame

Courtesy of American Motorcyclist Association
The AMA is pleased to announce the first member of the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Class of 2010: accomplished race team owner Mitch Payton (below, left, in the above photo of last year's AMA Team USA). Payton, whose Pro Circuit teams have collected 26 AMA Pro Championships in Motocross and Supercross since 1991, will be among the legends of motorcycling honored at the 2010 induction ceremony at the Red Rock Resort in Las Vegas this Nov. 19.

"In AMA Pro Motocross and Supercross, one team is perhaps more synonymous with winning than any other, Pro Circuit, and the motive force behind that team is one of the industry's most driven individuals, Mitch Payton," said Jack Penton, incoming AMA director of operations and a Hall of Famer himself. "Payton is an architect of not only championship teams, but champions, having developed some of this sport's greatest racers."

Payton's parents, James and Norma Payton, introduced him and his brother, James Jr., to motorcycling at a young age. By the time he was 10, Payton was competing in family enduros and a few years later was racing competitively in AMA District 37. In 1977, at the age of 17, Payton was one of the district's top desert racers and won the 125 class in that discipline. Unfortunately, the next year Payton's racing career was cut short by injury.

Instead of allowing discouragement to turn him away from motorcycling, Payton refocused his efforts on the business side of the sport. At 18, he bought and ran a local Husqvarna shop. His skill and reputation as a tuner grew, and his parts were being used by some of the biggest motocross teams of the mid-1980s. Then, in 1991, Honda asked Payton to run its 125 team. Payton accepted, and over the next 19 years, racing other brands as well, his teams won more championships than any other.

Tom White is chairman of the Hall of Fame Motocross/Supercross committee, and the company he founded, White Brothers, was one of the first distributors of Payton's products.

"I've known Mitch from when he was racing to when he was starting his company," White said. "It is one of my proudest moments to see somebody who overcame what some might see as a major disability and not only build the best motorcycles, but to be able to pick the riders and bring them up to a level of performance that makes them better than they ever thought they could be. Mitch Payton is absolutely what the Hall of Fame is about -- recognizing the people who have made the best and most lasting contributions to motorcycling."

Payton, an AMA Life Member, said that he's honored by his induction into the Hall of Fame. But, he said, he recognizes the legends he looked up to in his youth are the true heroes of the sport.

"I look around the industry, and there are a few guys I hold in real regard," Payton said. "One is Malcolm Smith. When I was a kid, we'd go to Malcolm's shop, and I was the 10-year-old punk who would bother the guys at the counter for stickers and sit on all the bikes. Another is Roger DeCoster. Those guys are just awesome.

"So, to be in the same Hall of Fame, for that honor, I'm really proud about that," Payton continued. "It's there forever. It means that anyone looking back on history years from now will see what you've done."

Payton, and the other members of the class of 2010, will officially be inducted into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame this Nov. 19 as part of the AMA Legends & Champions Weekend. In addition to the induction ceremony, the weekend includes the 2010 AMA Concours d'Elegance on Saturday, Nov. 20, featuring some of the country's most impressive original and restored classic motorcycles. The AMA Racing Championship Banquet closes out the weekend on Sunday, Nov. 21, where AMA Racing amateur champions of all ages will be recognized for their 2010 accomplishments

The event will be held at the Las Vegas Red Rock Resort, a world-class spa, hotel and casino, featuring a range of entertainment, dining and family-friendly attractions. The facility's expansive ballrooms will provide a stunning backdrop for the AMA Legends & Champions Weekend, which is certain to be memorable for the 2010 inductees, champions, families, friends and fans. More information is available online at RedRockLasVegas.com.

Lodging reservations can be made now at AmericanMotorcyclist.com/Accommodations. An announcement regarding ticket information will be made after June 1.

Located on the park-like campus of the AMA in Pickerington, Ohio, the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame honors individuals who have made lasting contributions to protecting and promoting the motorcycle lifestyle. Its members include those who have excelled in racing, road- and off-road riding, pushed the envelope in motorcycle design, engineering and safety, and championed the rights of riders in both the halls of government and the court of public opinion.

The AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Induction Committee includes nine members in addition to the chairman. There are eight sub-committees, each representing a different aspect of motorcycling.

Kawasaki Launces Mobile Web Site

Courtesy of Kawasaki
RVINE, Calif. Kawasaki Motors Corp., U.S.A., today announced the launch of its mobile Web site, taking advantage of technologies available to reach active, on-the-go powersports products consumers.  The site, which has all the capabilities the company’s desktop Web site, is available for immediate use, and is addressable at m.kawasaki.com.

"As consumer usage of digital media has evolved over the past few years, we have also progressed our capabilities," said Chris Brull, Kawasaki’s marketing communications director. "The mobile site is a better way to serve the needs of an active online audience," said Brull.

"Our consumers are increasingly accessing the Web through mobile devices, and the mobile Web site is another way that Kawasaki is engaging them on their platform of choice," said Brull.  "We have been focusing on digital communications during the past few years, and this is another example of using the right technology to reach the right audience, " he said.

According to Brull, the site will give potential customers quick access to complete product details, including images, specifications, MSRP, and unique videos. The mobile site will provide updated, real-time information on an auto-refresh basis that’s updated in sync with the desktop site.

Brull cited the respected Pew Research Center’s 2009 Internet & American Life Project  research showing that 32 percent of Americans have used mobile phones to access the Internet, and 46 percent of those mobile users indicate that on- the-go availability of information is very important to them.

The broad application of Kawasaki’s mobile site will also allow dealership and trade show personnel to quickly access product information in the field and engage customers on a timely basis.  Customers will be able to opt-in to have the company’s ongoing promotions relayed directly to them through text alerts, via their mobile unit.

Other features of the new outreach tool include the ability for customers to receive immediate information when new products are announced. And, if they wish to follow-up with a local dealer, the site will automatically populate the dealer locator section with up to 10 dealerships in close proximity to the zip code provided by the user.

The site provides interfaces to immediately access Kawasaki’s Facebook and Twitter profiles, as well as its YouTube channel.

Kawasaki Motors Corp., U.S.A. (KMC) markets and distributes Kawasaki motorcycles, ATVs, personal watercraft, utility vehicles and recreation utility vehicles through a network of more than 1,475 independent retailers, with an additional 8,000 retailers specializing in Kawasaki power products and general purpose engines. KMC and its affiliates employ nearly 3,300 people in the United States, with 400 of them located at KMC's Irvine, California headquarters.

AMA hires Jack Penton as Director of Operations

American Motorcyclist AssociationImage via Wikipedia
Courtesy of American Motorcyclist Association
The AMA is pleased to welcome Jack Penton to the position of AMA Director of Operations. Penton, an AMA Life Member who was inducted into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 1999 in honor of his off-road racing success, will start on June 1.

As director of operations, Penton will report directly to AMA President and CEO Rob Dingman, and will assist him in managing the day-to-day functions of the Association. Penton will also have direct responsibility for the Hall of Fame.

"Jack Penton's breadth of experience in the motorcycle industry gives him a fresh perspective that I'm excited to bring to the AMA," Dingman said. "His hands-on approach will help guide our staff as we continually seek better ways to serve our members and more effectively promote and protect the motorcycling lifestyle."

Penton has more than 40 years of experience in the motorcycle industry. Early in his career he worked for Penton Imports developing Penton motorcycles, a brand founded by his father, AMA Hall of Famer John Penton. Later, he worked for Kawasaki Motors, Malcolm Smith Racing and KTM America. Most recently, Penton served with Tucker Rocky Distributing, a world leader in the distribution of motorcycle merchandise.

An AMA member for 45 years, Penton is also chairman of the American Motorcycle Heritage Foundation (AMHF) Board of Directors, the fundraising body for the Hall of Fame, a position he will relinquish prior to June 1. Having served on the AMHF board for three years, Penton has watched the AMA make major improvements at a crucial time.

"I am eager to join the AMA staff, and I look forward to helping the Association become a more powerful voice for America's motorcyclists," Penton said. "The threats to motorcycling are greater today than ever before. Now is the time to secure the rights of motorcyclists in America, but to do so the AMA membership needs to grow many times over.

"The AMA has its priorities in order and has made the commitments needed to expand the organization," Penton said. "Now is the time for motorcycle enthusiasts everywhere to join us so that we can respond with strength to the forces that want to take away our rights as motorcyclists."

Effective June 1, those wishing to contact Penton can send him an e-mail at jpenton@ama-cycle.org, or call (614) 856-1900.

Rockstar Energy Suzuki Race Report: Seattle

Courtesy of Rockstar Canide Suzuki
Seattle, WA – April 26, 2010 – Rockstar Energy Suzuki returned to the West coast in a big way at the AMA Supercross race on Saturday night in Seattle, with 450-class rider Tommy Hahn racing his way to a season-best second-place finish. “It was a great night for me,” said Hahn. “I was feeling really comfortable all day, got in some good practice laps, got a good start in the main, and fought hard all the way through to the end.”

The track conditions were muddy and soft, which lead to some deep ruts and a track surface that was different every lap. While the soft dirt gave many riders trouble, Hahn didn’t struggle on his RM-Z450. “The track was pretty tough, but I like those kinds of conditions,” commented Hahn. “I felt right at home.” The RM-Z’s sharp handling helped Tommy carefully pick the fastest lines through the difficult track, and got great drives down the straights thanks to the powerful engine.

Tommy’s ride also made an impression on Team Manager Bill Keefe, who said, “Tommy rode like he owned it. We’re really proud of his performance in Seattle, and look forward to building on this momentum in Salt Lake!”

The race in Seattle marked the return of the riders Ryan Morais and Hunter Hewitt in the Western Regional Lites class, and both raced hard on the tough track. Morais got off to a strong start in the main, and rode well despite the difficult conditions. “I felt more like I was on an Endurocross track than a Supercross track,” said Morais. “The dirt was super soft and rutted out, but my RM-Z250 had the power to give me the good drives that I needed.” Morais went on to finish just inside the top five, while Hewitt rounded out the top ten.

The next round of the AMA/FIM Supercross championship will take place on May 1 at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City, Utah. Suzuki Supercross fans should head to Suzuki of Salt Lake on Friday night where the Rockstar Energy Suzuki team will be signing autographs from 6:00 to 7:00 P.M.

Dirt Wurx Rebuilds Winchester Speedpark

Courtesy of Dirt Wurx
MONROE, N.Y. (April 24, 2010) – Dirt Wurx USA recently put the blade to Winchester Speed Park’s supercross track, knocking the old track down completely and creating a newly designed and constructed track for the 2010 season.

“This is the one place in the Northeast where riders can experience a real Dirt Wurx USA supercross track. Yes, we do some things to make it safe for amateur riders, but for the most part this is the real thing,” said Winkler. “Dave actually came up with the basic design this year, and asked me for my input on any changes. It was really good just as it was, and I just said lets build it!

“It’s definitely got the Dirt Wurx seal of approval.”

Working with Winchester Speed Park for the past decade, Winkler and track owner Dave Boisvert, a part-time Dirt Wurx operator himself, look to take the supercross track to a new level each year.

“As riders at the track progress, and learn more supercross-specific skills, we need a track that progresses as well,” explained Boisvert. “I think we were able to design a challenging course with some good choice and timing sections, and a number of larger obstacles than we’ve featured in the past – but without the penalty involved when you come up short.”

“We hit this one out of the park,” said Winkler. “The new Winchester SX is as close to a real supercross track as possible, while also being forgiving. Plus, for once, we had three straight days of dry weather, allowing us to finish everything correctly, without having to return to re-groom soft jump faces and fix mud holes. Track conditions are perfect.

Boisvert added that the riders attending opening day on the motocross track were “Watching our progress and were pumped to return to Winchester’s opening day for the new supercross track.”

Winkler pulled both from his experience building the world’s most visible supercross tracks at the premier stadiums here in the States (Monster Energy AMA Supercross) as well as in Europe, along with his experience designing and constructing tracks for both public and private use around the world. The end result at Winchester Speed Park was a track that can be used by both intermediate and expert/pro riders alike.

The state-of-the-art Winchester facility features both a motocross track and supercross track and plays host to the New England Regional MX Championships and 2010 Loretta Lynn’s qualifier

MSR St Louis Race Report

Courtesy of MSRMX
Corona, CA – At the conclusion of an incredibly eventful race in St. Louis, MSR riders Kevin Windham and Nick Wey were able to land their MSR gear inside the top five of the Supercross class results. Windham was coming off a Monster Energy AMA Supercross season best second place, while Wey was looking to improve on his 11th place showing in Houston. Both riders put in a good heat race and transferred to the main event with fifth and seventh place gate picks.

Wey took the Spike Holeshot Award and led the pack for just under two laps in his MSR Rider Inspired “NYK” gear. Nick was eventually shuffled back a few positions, where he would find himself in a battle for the fourth spot with former Supercross champion Chad Reed. Wey put on an inspiring ride, withstood the pressure and never relinquishing the spot. This fourth place would mark Wey’s best Supercross finish this season.

Windham did not get the start that he was hoping for and completed the first lap of the main event in seventh position. It took Kevin a little while to get going in the early parts of the race, but by lap six he was on the move and inside the top five. Just passed the halfway point Villopoto went down and handed over second place to the charging Windham. K-Dub then made a late race charge at Dungey, closing the gap to just over two seconds with a few laps to go. Ultimately, lappers and minor mistakes forced him to settle in to the second position, for the second week in a row.

Throughout the day’s events, Windham was sporting the 2011 MSR NXT “Scan” gear. Look for a few more sneak peaks at the 2011 line as the Supercross series dwindles down. MORGANTOWN, W.V. (April 7, 2010) - With the start of the 2010 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship season just over six weeks away, MX Sports Pro Racing announces further information surrounding the season opening event, the Rockstar Energy Hangtown Motocross Classic. Festivities will commence on May 20 with a special event and press conference on the steps of the California State Capitol Building in Sacramento.

Celebrating Hangtown's 42nd year of hosting a motocross national and its return to the season-opening round of the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship, the Dirt Diggers North Motorcycle Club will bring the excitement of the world's most prestigious motocross series to the state capital of California. The massive, awe-inspiring race rigs of American Motocross' most prominent teams will line L Street and create a surreal setting in the heart of the city. Additionally, the sport's biggest stars, including defending champion Chad Reed, Jagermeister KTM's Mike Alessi, Rockstar/Makita Suzuki's Ryan Dungey, Muscle Milk/Toyota/JGR's Josh Grant, Honda Red Bull Racing's Andrew Short and Monster Energy Kawasaki's Ryan Villopoto will be on hand to speak to the media and interact with the fans in attendance as they prepare for a new season of the best outdoor racing on the planet.

The Rockstar Energy Hangtown Motocross Classic, which will take place on Saturday, May 22, has always been a gem of the outdoor nationals and the AMA Pro Motocross schedule, producing great racing and featuring some of the most dedicated and boisterous motocross fans in the world.

"I can't wait to kick things off for the 2010 season in Hangtown," boasted Rockstar/Makita Suzuki's Ryan Dungey. "I've always enjoyed racing there and with all the history it has, I can't think of a better place to make my 450 Class debut and I can't wait to bring our sport to the steps of the state capitol."

"The Hangtown Classic is an American Motocross tradition that out-dates the AMA Pro Motocross Series itself," said Davey Coombs, Vice President of MX Sports. "And yet the Dirt Diggers North Motorcycle Club continues to evolve and improve the event each and every time. They take great pride in their racetrack and their facility with some of most enthusiastic motocross fans in the world and we look forward to working with the Dirt Diggers for years to come. This is our chance to recognize their commitment and give it the appropriate acknowledgement they deserve."

Several elected members of the California government from throughout the region will show their support of the legendary event and get an up close look of what the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship is all about.

"The Dirt Diggers North Motorcycle Club (DDNMC) is proud that their event, the 42nd Hangtown Motocross Classic, is once again the opening round of the 2010 AMA Lucas Oil AMA Pro Championship," said Race Director John Allen. "The Hangtown Classic has been a staple in the series for the last 36 years and The Dirt Diggers North organization is committed to continue the history of hosting one of the most recognized events in the series. Press Releases Demuth Wins To Capture Third AMA Arenacross Series Championship on Night One in Denver

Courtesy of Feld Motorsports

Catanzaro Wins Lites Western Regional Title for GPF Championship Sweep
DENVER, Colo. (March 26, 2010) – It was a night of champions inside the Denver Coliseum as night one of the 2010 AMA Arenacross Series finale from Denver crowned a pair of champions in both the AMA Arenacross class and the AMA Arenacross Lites Western Regional Championship. In the premier class, it was Babbitt’s Monster Energy/TiLUBE Kawasaki’s Josh Demuth, of North Richland Hills, Texas, capturing his sixth win of the season en route to claiming his third AMA Arenacross Series title. A first-time winner stood atop the podium in the Western Regional Championship, but it was GPF/Babbitt’s Kawasaki rookie A.J. Catanzaro, of Middlefield, Conn., who relied on a runner-up effort to secure his first-career championship.
As the gates dropped on the AMA Arenacross class main event, it would be a battle between Babbitt’s teammates and close friends Demuth and Chad Johnson, of Rhinelander, Wis., to determine the outcome of the 2010 title. Coming into the race, Demuth held a 22-point lead over his teammate, putting Johnson in a must-win situation in order to stay alive in the title hunt heading into Saturday night’s final race.
Tuf Honda’s Heath Voss, of Mico, Texas, took advantage of the opportunity to compete on one of the series’ best rides, grabbing the holeshot and the early lead. As the 25-lap main event approached the halfway point, Voss looked to have things in control but tipped over heading into the rhythm section. Demuth was able to take advantage of Voss’ misfortune and led the rest of the way while Triple Effect Kawasaki’s Gray Davenport, of Lehi, Utah, kept him honest with a runner-up effort. Voss recovered to rebound third.
With a healthy 20-point lead over his closest competitor, Catanzaro could take a conservative approach to the 18-lap main event. U Motors Honda’s Tanner Redimann, of Bismarck, N.D., grabbed the holeshot off the gate and went on to dominate the remainder of the race, leading every lap for his first-career arenacross victory. Catanzaro’s runner-up effort was enough to take the Western Regional Championship while Gnarbars/Colorado Powersports Honda’s Kyle Calderini, of Colorado Springs, Colo., finished third in front of his hometown crowd.
The 19th and final race of the 2010 AMA Arenacross Series kicks-off tomorrow night from the Denver Coliseum, beginning at 7 p.m. MT.
Tickets for all rounds of the 2010 season can be purchased at www.ticketmaster.com and www.arenacross.com.

Courtesy of MX Sports
MORGANTOWN, W.V. – MX Sports Pro Racing announced today the postponement of the Glen Helen round of the 2010 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship, citing contractual differences with the promoter of the San Bernardino, Calif., facility. The second-round event, which was originally scheduled for Glen Helen Raceway on May 29, 2010, is now being slated for September 11.
“This was a difficult decision, but ultimately, we simply were not able to come to contractual terms with Glen Helen Raceway,” said Davey Coombs, Vice President of MX Sports Pro Racing. “By moving the date to September 11, we will have time to find a suitable venue. Riders, teams and fans are making travel plans now and we want them to feel secure that we will have an exceptional venue ready in Southern California. New Site Set to Promote Supermoto in the U.S.

Courtesy of Build Momentum

Supermoto Nation officially launched as a new company committed to growing the motorcycle category of supermoto in America. In addition to announcing the company, Supermoto Nation’s web site and Facebook page are now live. The web site and Facebook page will serve as a central point for people interested in getting started riding or racing supermoto.

The primary focus of Supermoto Nation will be to build an entertaining, innovative and successful professional supermoto series in America. In addition, the company will help leverage all the regional efforts and focus attention on the various groups and individuals committed to supporting and growing supermoto.

The name (Supermoto Nation) was selected to capture the potential of the sport of supermoto and to create excitement about this absolutely incredible motor sport. The name represents the future of supermoto and what is possible when people who are passionate about something take on building a supermoto nation.

“Originally this all started as an effort to figure out a way to salvage the Pro Supermoto Racing Series - no small undertaking in this economy. But as I continued to work on developing the series, I realized that it was going to take more than just a professional race series to properly promote supermoto in America. While some of the pieces exist today, there are a few elements that need to be added and everything has to be pulled together into a cohesive and compelling package. A package that builds the fan base, educates future customers about supermoto-style bikes and accessories, and encourages new participants to want to get involved in riding and racing supermoto,” commented Ed Kuhlenkamp, founder and owner of Supermoto Nation.

Supermoto Nation is in the process of exploring the likelihood of being able to proceed with developing a true national race series in 2010 and determining what that series will look like. Preliminary discussions have taken place with local promoters and sponsors around the country. Supermoto Nation is confident that it is still possible to have a series this year with the right marketing partners. Companies interested in marketing opportunities associated with the series can contact Ed Kuhlenkamp, his information is available at www.supermotonation.org.

“The plan to rebuild the sport of supermoto is grounded in taking realistic steps and not overpromising what can be done in the near term. I think the hype about supermoto and promises of what could be achieved with the sport in the past are some of the things that hampered the growth of supermoto. Supermoto has all the qualities to be a highly successful motor sport. It is extremely exciting, fairly easy to locate events near major metropolitan areas and has always produced excellent ratings when televised. Even with all these qualities and more the sport lacks true infrastructure and strong support at the local level. None of that is going to happen overnight, but it will happen if someone is focused on it. Rebuilding supermoto will take a couple of years, but after the initial infrastructure is in place, sponsors and fans can expect steady growth in the category and a racing calendar they can count on,” added Kuhlenkamp.

The new Supermoto Nation web site will focus primarily on the professional racers, and teams involved in the series. In addition, it will also serve as a destination site for people interested in learning more about how to get started riding or racing supermoto. Currently, the site has only limited information posted; more details will be added in the weeks to come. The site does have sections dedicated to finding supermoto clubs and supermoto schools around the country. There are also plans to add other information about the various manufacturers of supermoto-style bikes, accessory companies and bike builders. The development of the site was a joint effort between John Sears, Drew Stoerrle and Ed Kuhlenkamp.

Motorcycle enthusiasts interested in this exciting sport and category of motorcycling should visit the new web site and become a fan of the Facebook page. The links are listed below.

DUNGEY STILL LEADS AFTER SAN FRANCISCO CRASH

Courtesy of Suzuki

DUNGEY STILL LEADS AFTER SAN FRANCISCO CRASH
Team Suzuki Press Office - January 31.

Rocktar Makita Suzuki's Ryan Dungey crashed as he led Saturday night's AMA/ FIM Supercross Championship fourth round in San Francisco, but remounted to take fourth place and keep his series lead intact.

With a shortened practice schedule due to rain that fell in San Francisco in the days leading up to the race, riders were given a total of 15 minutes of practice before the heat races. After timed practice, Dungey was in the second spot with a time of 53.337. During Heat 1, he was second for most of the eight laps, but he clipped a Tuff Block in the final laps and finished sixth.

As the gate dropped for the Main Event, Dungey came out with the holeshot. At his best, he had more than a nine-second lead on the field about half way through the race. The rhythm section he had troubles with during the heat race proved to be his nemesis and Dungey's boot caught in a rut, resulting in the racer separating from his bike. With the gap he had given himself with great line choice, Dungey was able to get back on his bike in second place. The 20-year-old rookie from Minnesota crossed the finish line in fourth spot after struggling with a bent clutch lever and a bent front brake rotor, which left him essentially without a front brake for the rest of the race.

"After practice, I felt good," Dungey said. "I think we made some good changes to the bike. I felt confident in the heat race, but I had a little tip over, so I tried to regroup. I came out and got a great holeshot in the Main and then I caught my foot and threw it away. I salvaged it for fourth, which is not too bad. I'm thankful that I'm alright and healthy." His fourth-place finish in San Francisco was enough to keep him 12 points ahead of second place.

Team Manager Roger DeCoster was feeling confident going into the race, and afterwards was happy that his racer was uninjured. "It could've been a lot worse," DeCoster said. "We're leaving here still with the points lead; we gave up a few points, but considering after his crash he had no front brake and no clutch and he still came out in fourth place, that's still pretty good. I'm sure he's going to be sore, but there's no serious injury. The bike was working well, so this week we probably have more to do with a chiropractor than a mechanic."

Austin Stroupe, Dungey's Rockstar Makita Suzuki team mate, who is filling in on the RM-Z450 in the Supercross class for Matt Moss, missed the race due to illness. He is expected to return to action in San Diego.

Main Event Results:

1. Ryan Villopoto (Kawasaki)
2. Josh Hill (Yamaha)
3. Davi Millsaps (Honda)
4. Ryan Dungey (Rockstar Makita Suzuki)
5. Andrew Short (Honda)
