MORGANTOWN, W. Va. (January 21, 2013) –
MX Sports Pro Racing and all event Promoters of the Lucas Oil Pro
Motocross Championship, sanctioned by AMA Pro Racing, wish to
congratulate Kevin Windham on his decision to retire. Windham announced
his retirement during opening ceremonies of the Anaheim Supercross on
Saturday night at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, Calif. The GEICO Honda rider
made the decision to call time on his career after meeting with family,
friends and his team.
Windham, 34 years, has been racing at the highest levels of the sport
since 1994, when the mini-cycle prodigy turned pro after winning eight
titles at Loretta Lynn's AMA Amateur National Motocross Championships.
His professional career
"Without a doubt Kevin Windham will be remembered as one of the most
popular athletes the sport has ever known," said MX Sports Pro Racing
President, Davey Coombs. "He was not only an exceptional rider, but a
great role model who was always generous with his time and the fans. He
has provided countless great races and memories, as well as nearly forty
career wins. By any measure, he was one of American motocross racing's
greatest heroes. We have know Kevin since he first came to Loretta
Lynn's on a 65cc mini-cycle back in 1988, and it has been our pleasure
to see him enjoy such a long and illustrious career. We truly appreciate
his efforts, both on the race track as a competitor and off the track
as a wonderful ambassador for the sport."
Windham won his first AMA Pro Motocross National on May 12, 1996, at
Glen Helen Raceway in San Bernardino, Calif. His last win came on
September 4, 2010, at Steel City Raceway. The time between Windham's
first National win and last win marks the longest gap in Pro Motocross
history.
