Red Bud Race Report...Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki
orona, Calif. – It seems at every event the Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki team is threatening to sweep the podium and Red Bud was no exception as Dean Wilson and Christophe Pourcel finished second and third overall respectively. Tyla Rattray was also in position for a podium before a crash sent him back to sixth overall. Jake Weimer rode strong before a crash finishing eighth overall.
There was a new name on the top of the qualifying sheets this weekend, but his livery was still the same black and lime-green of Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki. Rattray became the first rider to eclipse Pourcel in qualifying this year, posting the fastest lap less than three-tenths of a second quicker than the Frenchman. Pourcel was second, with Wilson sixth and Weimer eighth.
"I thought I was riding well today," said Rattray. "I had some bad lines early, but I was behind Pourcel and followed him to find some good lines. In the second moto I was making a charge at Dean (Wilson) on the off-camber turn. I didn’t see the bump until the last minute. I tried to wheelie over it, but I couldn’t and I went over the handlebars."
In the first moto, the start looked like an advertisement for Pro Circuit power as Pourcel, Rattray and Weimer pulled the field through the first turn. Wilson didn’t get the jump out of the gate crossing the line at the end of the first lap in seventh. Pourcel and Rattray began to pull away from the field and the teammates would ride in lock-step throughout the 15-lap moto to finish 1-2. Weimer was right there running fourth until the 12th lap when he lost his rear brake and crashed coming down a downhill dropping back to 11th. At the same time, Wilson was charging through the field, and the young rookie made it up to third by the checkered flag.
"I was up front and riding well and then my rear brake was just gone," said Weimer. "I’m not sure what happened, it was probably a rock or something, but the brake didn’t fade it just didn’t work. Coming down the hill, I had nowhere to go and I hit someone and went down."
The start of the second moto was great for Wilson and Rattray as they came out 1-2, but Pourcel and Weimer had a battle on their hands coming out seventh and ninth respectively. Wilson led the first ten laps but an aggressive pass by Trey Canard sent him off track and he fell back to second. Right on his rear fender was his teammate Rattray, who also had a go at him, but a breaking bump sent the Rattray over the bars and dropped him to 11th in the order. Both Pourcel and Weimer tried to make their way through the pack on the tight track and the French rider made it up to fifth, while Weimer ended up seventh.
"I tried to pace myself out there," said Wilson. "I knew it would be a long moto, and the track was rough, so I rode steady and didn’t push too hard. It felt good to lead the second moto early. (Trey) Canard made a pretty aggressive pass to get by me, but it was clean. I went off the track, but I stayed on the throttle and didn’t lose too much ground. It was a good weekend, I finished second and stayed safe."
The team will now enjoy the weekend off before heading to Minnesota for the Spring Creek National at Millville.

Lakewood Race Report...Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki
Corona, Calif. – Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s domination of the AMA Motocross Series 250 class continued at Thunder Valley Raceway in Lakewood, Colo. Christophe Pourcel gave the team its fourth straight overall win and Dean Wilson’s third place result also gave the team its fourth straight double podium. Tyla Rattray just missed the podium finishing fourth overall while Jake Weimer was 17th.
Pourcel was once again the class of the field in qualifying, posting a lap nearly two seconds quicker than his nearest competitor. Weimer was third fastest and looked to turn his luck around with a good gate pick in the motos. Rattray qualified eighth and Wilson qualified 11th.
In the first moto Pourcel launched out to the holeshot on the long uphill start and never looked back as he led wire-to-wire to earn his fifth moto win of the year. Right behind him was his teammate Wilson who kept the pressure on while running in second for the entire moto. Rattray was sixth after the first lap and slowly made his way into fourth. While there wasn’t a lot of passing going on up front, Weimer was putting on a clinic as he moved up through the field. After trouble on the first lap, Weimer was 36th and looking to salvage a good finish. By the end of the fourth lap he had made 16 passes and was sitting in 20th. He wasn’t done though as he continued to move up through the pack ending up 10th.
"Being on the podium is awesome," said Wilson. "That is where I want to be every week. Getting second in the first moto was what I needed to run a relaxed second moto."
When the gate dropped for the second moto, there was a familiar cast of lime green Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s near the front with all four riders in the top seven positions at the end of the first lap. Wilson led the way in third with Rattray fourth, and Pourcel fifth. On the second lap, Weimer again found trouble and dropped all the way back to last in 39th. Pourcel made his way through his teammates by lap five and began stalking the leader. He would take the lead on lap 10 with Wilson running third and Rattray fourth. Weimer again put in a charge moving up through the back of the pack again to finish 24th. During the two motos, Weimer passed an amazing 41 riders.
"I got a good start in both motos," said Pourcel. "I always want to feel good on the track and when I do, I can make it happen and get the win. It was rough for the races, I think I liked the night race here better because the track was very smooth and easy."
The team now heads to Red Bud for the traditional Fourth of July event with Pourcel, Wilson and Rattray still holding the top three spots in the standings. Was this post helpful? Add yours to our service or subscribe to our feed above.

Budd's Creek Race Report...Monster Energy / Pro Circuit Kawasaki
Corona, Calif. – Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Dean Wilson earned his first career AMA overall win as well as his first moto win at Budds Creek in Maryland. The 18-year-old rookie went 4-1 to claim his first victory just two weeks after nearly earning the win at Freestone. Tyla Rattray continued his string of podium finishes going 2-3 to finish third overall. The 250-class points leader Christophe Pourcel was fourth overall going 1-6. Jake Weimer went 21-7 to finish 12th overall.
Pourcel once again dominated qualifying as he earned the first gate pick for the fourth straight event. Wilson was fifth fastest, Rattray was ninth quick and Weimer was 11th in qualifying.
"I felt really good in the first moto," said Pourcel. "I didn't get a good start in the second moto and I ended up crashing really big. I am happy that I still have the points lead and just need to put together two good motos."
In the first moto, Pourcel got a good start and led wire-to-wire to claim his fourth moto win of the season. Behind him, Rattray again got a good start crossing the line in fifth with Weimer just back in seventh. Weimer was running well until lap eight when he dropped back to 33rd in the order. He spent the last half of the moto clawing his way back up to 21st. Also moving up was Wilson who moved from 11th to sixth in 10 laps. Rattray rode a steady race slowly working his way into second.
"In the second moto, I thought I had the pass, but I just barely went off the track and that pushed me back a few seconds so I settled in for third," said Rattray. "It was a pretty tough race with the humidity. I am definitely happy to be on the podium, just wish I could have made that pass."
In the second moto it was Wilson who got the jump out of the gate, running second for two laps before making a pass for the lead. Wilson went on to lead the last 14 circuits to claim his first moto win, but he wasn’t sure if it was enough to clinch the overall. Pourcel, Rattray and Weimer were all running together fifth through seventh early in the race and the trio kept picking off spots. Rattray held the best lines as he worked his way up to third while Pourcel would finish sixth and Weimer seventh.
"The feeling of winning my first race was incredible, but I think it would be that much better if I would have known it at the checkered flag," said Wilson. "It's been a long time coming so it's nice to finally get the monkey off my back and hopefully I can put some more wins together."
Pourcel, Rattray and Wilson continue to hold down the top three spots in the championship standings, as the team now must prepare for the challenges of Thunder Valley, just outside of Denver. Was this post helpful? Add yours to our service or subscribe to our feed above.

Mt Morris National...KTM Race Report
Mt. Morris, PA – Jagermeister/KTM rider Mike Alessi and FMF/KTM rider Tommy Searle didn’t have the results they wanted to see after each made a few mistakes at the third round of the series held at High Point Raceway but both riders put in two impressive charges in the final stages of their second moto to build confidence heading to the fourth round next week.
Alessi qualified second fastest in the timed practice earlier in the day. In the first moto he took a 4th place start and maintained that pace for the first part of the race. In the second half he made a few mistakes as the rain lightened up and eventually fell to 7th where he finished the moto.
"I rode a little tight in the first moto and felt tired. Between the motos I tried to rest as much as I could and better prepare myself for the second moto," commented Alessi.
His second moto was much stronger. This time around he earned a 3rd place start and quickly moved into 2nd. He battled with Ryan Dungey and Josh Grant early in the race. Alessi continued to battle with the top riders throughout the moto making impressive passes in the process. At the end of the race he finished 5th. His 7-5 scores earned him 5th overall.
In the 250 class Tommy Searle earned a 4th place start in the first moto. At one point he ran as high up as 3rd place which was a remarkable feat considering the continuous troubles he has been having with his shoulder. He pushed through the pain and finished a respectable 6th overall.
In the second moto Searle got a mid-pack start and charged hard to come up through the pack. At one point he was as high up as 6th place. It looked like he would continue to move forward until a big mistake over a corner double sent him to the ground hard. "The crash was so big that the wheels on the ground flag came out and I had to sprint over to the area to check him out," remarked FMF/KTM Team Manager Casey Lytle. Searle collected himself and decided to get back in the race.
Now on the fifth lap of the race, Searle returned to the track over one minute down from 20th position. "We were hoping he could catch 20th so he could get at least one point for the moto," commented Lytle.
Searle did more than that. He caught up to 20th with just three laps to go with no sign of settling. Over the next three laps he caught and passed five more riders and eventually put himself in 15th position. "The passes he was making were insane. The entire team is proud of him. I believe that once he watches the playback his charge through the pack will inspire a deeper confidence heading into the next round," said Lytle.
Searle’s 6-15 scores earned him 12th overall and the confidence to fight for a podium position at the next round.

Rockwell Time Race Report: Freestone
Rockwell Time Race Report: Freestone
SALT LAKE CITY, UT (June 8, 2010) The top Rockwell Time Team rider this past weekend at Freestone was the #20 of Broc Tickle. Broc fought the intense Texas heat and ended the day 4th overall in the Lites class with 8-2 moto scores. Fellow Rockwell riders Jake Weimer and Justin Barcia also cracked the top ten in the super competitive Lites class. Weimer followed up his impressive 5th place finish in the first moto with a 12th in the second moto, giving him 8th for the day. Barcia grabbed 10th overall with 10-8 moto scores. Going into Mt. Morris, Tickle, Weimer, and Barcia sit 5th, 7th, and 8th in series points, respectively. Jumping up to the 450 class, Rockwell rider Mike Alessi came back from a disappointing 12th in the first moto to leading the second moto. Unfortunately Mike would be regulated back to the 5th position by motos end and would walk away from Freestone with a 7th overall. Rockwell rider Davi Millsaps would also have a weekend he would rather forget as his 10-19 moto scores gave him 16th for the day. Watch for Millsaps and Alessi to bounce back at Mt. Morris and regain their positions at the front of the pack.

Rockwell Time Race Report...Hangtown
SALT LAKE CITY, UT (May 25, 2010) Rockwell Time Team riders had a great showing at the first round of the 2010 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship Series this past weekend at the Hangtown Motocross Classic. Crowds packed in to witness the start of another great season of rubbin’ and racing. Mike Alessi proved that his new 350 SX-F has the ponies to run with the 450’s and used his new ride to grab the win in the second 450 moto. The win coupled with his third place finish in the first moto gave Alessi second overall for the day; putting Alessi one spot behind 2009 Champ Chad Reed. Fellow Rockwell Team rider Davi Millsaps also proved that he will be a serious threat this season and ran up front in both 450 motos. Davi’s 3-2 moto scores earned him third overall.
Rockwell Time Lites riders Jake Weimer, Justin Barcia, and Broc Tickle all put in some great rides at Hangtown. Although Weimer planned to be on the box, his 4-8 moto scores were impressive against the stacked 250 field and he finished the day with a fourth overall. Dunlop Congratulates 2010 SX Champions
Buffalo, NY: Dunlop Motorcycle Tires proudly extends its congratulations to the Supercross and Supercross Lites champions for 2010: Supercross Champion Ryan Dungey (Rockstar Makita Suzuki), Supercross Lites West Champion Jake Weimer (Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki), and Supercross Lites East Champion Christophe Pourcel (Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki). The 2010 season began with plenty of fanfare and excitement—as expected. But the men who would make their mark on the season began their run early on and never let up.
All three riders accomplished these feats and more on their way to earning a championship while riding on Dunlop tires—this in a year that saw Dunlop step up its commitment to Supercross racing to support the paddock like no other company. Although there have been five brands of tires in the SX paddock, if you measure performance by trips to the podium, Dunlop has far and away outperformed all other tires in 2010.
• When combining all 34 main events at the 17 rounds of Supercross and Lites races, Dunlop riders comprised an astounding 95.8 percent of the field.
• Dunlop fitment reached 100 percent in 14 main events this year.
• Dunlop riders filled all three spots on every Supercross and Lites podium all season long.
• Dunlop riders filled all top-ten spots in every main event except three Lites races where Dunlop riders finished in nine out of the top 10 positions.
“Dunlop really had to step up to accommodate our broad-reaching fitment in Supercross racing this year,” said Broc Glover, Dunlop Senior Manager, Motorcycle Off-Road. “We are committed to supporting our sport despite some really challenging market conditions and it certainly showed in our results this season. I want to thank all of our engineers, tire fitters and support staff, and all the teams, for their hard work as we now gear up for the 2010 Motocross season.”

FMF/KTM Race Report – Las Vegas Supercross
Nicoletti started the day well with three solid practices. He qualified 8th overall out of the West Lites riders after all practices were through and returned to the pits to gear up for the heat.
Nicoletti was in heat number two. He got a great jump coming around the first turn in 2nd position and was in 4th by the time they came inside the stadium from the outside start gate. He remained in 4th for the first few laps before he missed a jump and was passed by a train of three riders that were close behind him. Now in 7th, he maintained his pace and finished the heat only losing one more position to qualify 8th.
Nicoletti powerfully launched off the line at the start of the Lites main event but was pinched off in the first corner due to his outside start position. When they came inside the stadium he had fallen to the tail end of the pack and was sitting in 17th. After a rough start, Nicoletti began to pick up his lap times and began making passes. He quickly moved to 15th and then a lap later moved up to 14th. He was handed 13th after Canard crashed and remained there to the finish.
“My lap times were consistent tonight but I just struggled in some areas. I am glad to finish the season safely and look forward to outdoors starting. I definitely want to extend my gratitude to all my sponsors who have been there for me this season,” remarked Nicoletti
Overall Results –
1) Jake Weimer
2) Josh Hansen
3) Christophe Pourcel
4) Dean Wilson
5) Justin Barcia
6) Broc Tickle
7) Martin Davalos
8) Travis Baker
9) Ryan Morais

Rockwell Time Race Report...SLC
Rockwell Time Race Report: Salt Lake
SALT LAKE CITY, UT (May 3, 2010) Rockwell’s hometown race in Salt Lake this past weekend was a huge success. Even though the weather conditions were not ideal, Rockwell Time rider Jake Weimer wrapped up the 2010 West Coast Lites Championship. After winning the first Lites heat, Weimer charged into the main and finished fifth, giving him enough points to snatch the title. Fellow Rockwell Lites riders Broc Tickle and Cole Seely also put in solid rides at Rice-Eccles stadium. Broc finished the night with a 6th giving him 4th in the series points and Seely finished 11th giving him 7th in the series. Unfortunately, Rockwell rider Jason Potter suffered a pelvis injury during practice after casing the huge triple after the whoops and was not able to race. On a better note, Rockwell wants to recognize Landon Powell for making his first main of the season. Big props go out to Landon as he has been working his tail off the entire series.
As for the 450’s, Rockwell Time rider Davi Millsaps grabbed a heat win and finished second behind Windham in the main. With one race left to run, Millsaps sits 4th in overall points, just 13 points behind the injured Villopoto. Chris Blose battled the muddy conditions and raced his way to a 10th place finish and sits 13th in overall points. Rockwell Time riders Kyle Partridge and Gray Davenport finished 13th and 18th respectively.
Will Weimer take the East-West Shootout? Will Millsaps grab his second win of the season? We’ll find out as the series wraps up next weekend in Las Vegas. Until then, keep rockin’ Rockwell.

SALT LAKE CITY, UT (April 27, 2010) Rockwell Time wants to offer a big congrats to Broc Tickle for taking his first Supercross Lites win this past weekend at Qwest Field in Seattle. Broc battled the adverse track conditions, kept it rubber side down, and finished on the top of the podium. It was a well deserved win and all of us here at Rockwell are very pumped for Broc. Fellow Rockwell Lites riders Jake Weimer and Cole Seely also put in good rides. Weimer, despite going down early in the race, managed to slice his way through the pack and finish a solid third while Seely finished in the 7th spot. Jake Weimer heads into Salt Lake City with a comforting 19 point lead and looks to grab the West Coast Lites title this coming Saturday. Rockwell Team rider Davi Millsaps took the checkers in the second Supercross class heat race and finished 5th in the main. Davi heads into the penultimate round of the Supercross series just 17 points behind Kevin Windham who sits in third overall. If you’re going to make it the next round in Salt Lake City, don’t forget to stop by the Rockwell pits. Being that it’s our hometown race, it’s sure to be a good time.

Tonight on DMXS Radio
Factory Rockstar Makita Suzuki’s Ryan Dungey made the most of his eventful night in San Francisco and maintains a comfortable cushion in the championship battle. With the top two contenders out, the potent rookie finds himself as the unlikely target for the field after four rounds are now in the books. It has been a while since a rookie has so fully prepared for the step up to the big bikes and Ryan made it clear at the season opener that he’s ready for the fight.
Geico Powersports Honda’s Trey Canard won his first race of the year and is looking to build on that momentum in hopes of making a legitimate run at Jake Weimer in the second half of the AMA Supercross West Lites series. Trey has always been a popular guest with the listeners on our show for his quirky sense of humor and honesty so we hope he brings his good stuff tonight.
There have been some true characters in our sport over the years and few as infamous in the South as Matt “Stalker” Walker. The fiery competitor was never lacking in controversy or heart throughout his career and made a few headlines in his day. Even though he is no longer stalking the competition, Matt is still heavily involved in our sport as a coach and trainer. We will catch up with our southern neighbor tonight and hear the latest on his riders and his take on the season so far.
Monster Energy Supercross is going pink for Anaheim 3 and is teaming up with the Susan G. Komen For The Cure to help raise awareness and funds for the fight against breast cancer. Our good friend Shasta Johnson is spearheading this and will be on tonight to give us all the details. She will also be joining thousands of dedicated men and women for the San Diego Breast Cancer 3-Day walk to further the effort. Please make plans to wear pink at Anaheim 3 and check out www.komen.org to find ways to get involved!

Things Get Topsy-Turvy in Southwick
As the saying goes, there’s a reason why they run the races. Both classes proved that today at Southwick, round 11 of the 12-round Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship.
Coming into the event, Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Christophe Pourcel led the 250cc class by a full 13 points over Rockstar/Makita Suzuki’s Ryan Dungey, and Dungey needed help to win the title, because even if he won every moto from Southwick on to the end of the year, Pourcel would only have to finish second each time to secure the championship.
However, ask and ye shall receive. At Southwick, things went pear-shaped on Pourcel something fierce.
In moto one, Pourcel got a horrible start on the wet, sandy, rutted circuit and moved slowly forward until he sat fifth, while Dungey sat second. The points gap between the positions was six points, and if things stayed that way, the two would’ve gone into moto two only seven points apart.
However, with less than two laps to go, Pourcel’s bike gave up the ghost. He ended the moto with a DNF and no points scored. Dungey did all he could do in second, but he had to settle for the spot, as rookie sensation Justin Barcia, from the GEICO Powersports Honda team, took his first-ever moto victory after passing Dungey around the halfway point.
Barcia’s teammates Blake Wharton and Brett Metcalfe were third and fourth, and Pourcel’s teammates Austin Stroupe and Tyla Rattray were fifth and sixth.
Moto two was all Tyla Rattray out front, though. He got the holeshot and led every lap. However, Pourcel was the last one up in a first-turn pileup and rejoined the race in last while his title rival Dungey rounded lap one in 14th. Barcia was 17th. Metcalfe was second.
As Barcia chased Dungey through the pack, Pourcel worked his way forward, but his advance stalled at 10th place, and then he lost that spot to teammate Jake Weimer, who fell early in the race and took a long time starting his bike. Weimer eventually caught up to ninth.
Barcia worked on Dungey until they sat third and fourth at about the halfway point, and then Barcia took over the third position with two laps to go, solidifying his first-ever AMA National victory. Rattray won the moto over Metcalfe. Dungey was fourth, Ryan Sipes fifth, Tommy Searle sixth.
Pourcel finished well off the pace in 11th and leaves Southwick with a 17-point deficit to make up at the final next weekend at Steel City. It’s a daunting task, to be sure, but at the same time, Dungey made up 30 points in one day at Southwick, so anything’s possible.
In the 450cc class, it was all Rockstar/Makita Suzuki’s Chad Reed in moto one. He got the holeshot and led every lap, running away with a wire-to-wire victory over fellow Aussies Jake Moss (Monster Energy Kawasaki) and Michael Byrne. Rookie Kyle Regal was fourth in the first moto, in yet another strong ride, and local boy Robby Marshall was fifth, just in front of Valli Yamaha’s Matt Goerke, Honda Red Bull Racing’s Andrew Short, Jagermeister KTM’s Justin Brayton, Canidae/Motosport Kawasaki’s Tommy Hahn, local legend John Dowd and Floridian Ricky Renner (riding a 2007 Honda CRF450R practice bike).
In the second moto, Short got the holeshot but was quickly passed by Reed, then by Goerke for second, then by Dowd for third, Byrne for fourth, Hahn and Tedesco for fifth and sixth, etc. Reed led until just after the finish line on lap 9 of 16, when he cross-rutted and went down hard on the downside of the finish-line jump, handing the lead to Goerke.
Goerke led the rest of the race and, in his third race as a replacement rider at Team Yamaha, won his first-ever AMA National overall. He had never been on the podium at a national previous to this one.
Byrne finished second overall with a 3-3 and Dowd was a very popular third with a 10-2.
However, the championship was decided last week, so even if Reed sits out the finale as he recovers from his bruises and bumps, the championship is over.

Jagermeister & Muscle Milk/MDK/KTM Race Report - Budds Creek
Mechanicsville, MD - The 10th round of the Lucas Oil AMA Motocross Championship Series held at Budds Creek Motocross Park was up and down as was the weather for the KTM Factory Team riders.
Jagermeister/MDK/KTM rider Justin Brayton, who came to Budds Creek looking for his first podium, fell shy of that accomplishment after a bad start and mid-moto crash put him in 21st overall after the first moto. "I was one of the unfortunate riders who got caught up on the start after Reardon crashed. I fought my way up to around 20th from a poor start and then crashed setting myself back all the positions I had gained. In the end I was only able to climb back up to 21st," commented Brayton.
The second moto proved to be much stronger for Brayton. "I got a 6th place start and just focused on maintaining that position." Brayton was closing in on Andrew Short when Matt Goerke pulled out in front of him from pit row one lap down. Goerke got between to the two riders and Brayton lost some time and eventually lost a position to Michael Byrne. Near the end of the moto, Short had some problems and Brayton was able to move ahead. Brayton finished in 7th position. His 21-7 positions awarded him 11th overall for the day. "It's not where I wanted to finish, but it could have been a lot worse," remarked Brayton.
In the 250 Motocross class, Muscle Milk/MDK/KTM rider Ryan Sipes proved he is ready to return to racing. In only his second race back this season, Sipes was able to put together two decent scores. His 11th place finish in the first moto coupled with an impressive 9th place finish in the mud fest of a second moto put him in 8th overall for the day. "I would obviously like to be finishing in the top five, but after sitting the entire season out with an injury, I am very happy to be back and to place within the top ten," reported Sipes.
Sipes teammates were not as fortunate at Budds Creek, as both Wil Hahn and Tommy Searle encountered problems. In the first moto Searle had a great 3rd place start and managed to hang onto 7th position. However, his second moto was a completely new story. Searle started 27th on the first lap, charged hard to work his way up to 19th on the second lap and then got stuck in a deep mud rut on the third lap to end up back in 29th. With only 9 laps, (the second moto was cut short due to large amounts of rain fall) Searle was only able to climb to 21st. His moto scores earned him 13th overall for the day. Hahn also suffered from a bad start due to horrible gate pick in the second moto. Still recovering from shoulder surgery, the rough and muddy track was very demanding on Hahn as he still has some pain from his shoulder injury. His 21-18 moto scores were notable coming from the back of the pack but were not strong enough to put him inside the top twenty overall.

THOR/PARTS UNLIMITED WEEK IN REVIEW: UNADILLA!
On a day that American Motocross saluted its past, the Thor/Parts Unlimited team celebrated the present by dominating the winner's circle in both classes of the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship at New Berlin, N.Y.
Team leader Chad Reed moved closer to his first 450 Class outdoor title by conquering a Unadilla Valley Sports Center course that always had given him problems. The Rockstar/Makita/Suzuki star extended his streak of moto wins to five, captured his third straight overall title and took a stranglehold on the top spot in the point standings with three races to go.
Meanwhile, in the 250 Class, French rookie Christophe Pourcel turned in a performance that mirrored Reed's, winning both motos and the overall to regain a slim lead in the standings, whil his Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki teammate, Jake Weimer, had a pair of strong third-place finishes to round out the overall podium.
A 40th Birthday Party
Round nine of the championship had been dubbed the Unadilla Retro Motocross National to commemorate the 40th year of racing at the upstate New York facility. The track has been the site of numerous memorable moments for the sport, among them the first U.S. round of the Motocross des Nations, and several riders and teams paid their respects by donning retro plastics and gear. Reed was one of those, showcasing a Mark Barnett tribute Thor Force helmet throughout his dominating day.
In Control with Three to Go
Reed's third straight overall victory put him in position to clinch his first AMA Pro Motocross championship at round 10 of the series on Saturday. Reed, a two-time AMA Supercross champion, has an 82-point lead over Honda's Andrew Short and can wrap up the title by leaving Budds Creek with a 100-point lead. There are a maximum of 50 points available at each round, and if Reed and Short finished in a tie the Australian would be declared the champion by virtue of his race victories.
Reed also can hoist his first championship trophy by finishing seventh or better in each of the six remaining motos.
Déjà vu All Over Again
There was a similar pattern to Reed's wins in both of the 16-lap motos.
Jeff Alessi got the holeshot in the first moto, then crashed out of the moto and turned the lead over to Davi Millsaps, but Reed overtook Millsaps on lap five and began pulling away to a 3.6-second victory over Kawasaki-mounted Tommy Hahn. In moto two, Short got the holeshot and the early lead, but got passed on lap 5 by Reed, who won by 4.9 seconds.
The overall victory was the Florida resident's fourth of the season.
Consistently Excellent
The consistency that has been a benchmark for Reed's success in the AMA Supercross Series is being manifest on the outdoor circuit now. He also appears to be fully healthy again after being plagued by a stomach problem for the first half of the season. It all couldn't have come together at a more opportune time.
"I'm really excited to get the overall win at Unadilla," Reed said. "There's so much history here, and this is a challenging track. It can bite you if you look away for just a second. I've always struggled here. It was great to go 1-1. I can't complain. I had a goal and I stuck to it.
"Thanks so much to the Rockstar/Makita/Suzuki team because we've had our ups and downs, like everyone else, but things are going good right now."
Frenchman Looks Familiar on Foreign Tracks
Christophe Pourcel, the international rookie star of the Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki team, obviously found the rough and rutted Unadilla layout to his liking, and his 1-1 overall gave him another advantage over Rockstar/Makita/Suzuki's Ryan Dungey in one of the most exciting 250 title fights in history.
Pourcel and Dungey went into the weekend tied in the standings. But after beating Dungey by 10 seconds in the first moto and 17.5 seconds in the second, Pourcel holds a 6-point lead with three races remaining. It was the third overall victory and ninth and 10th moto wins of the season for Pourcel.
Intestinal Fortitude
Pourcel, who has almost constant stomach problems as a result of a life-threatening accident two years ago, had his perfect day on the track on his worst day of the season physically. He vomited on the starting gate before the opening moto, but as usual was able to overcome the health problems during the races.
Weimer, Stroupe Aid Strong Showing for Pro Circuit Team
Pro Circuit Kawasaki's Jake Weimer joined teammate Christophe Pourcel on the podium after a pair of solid third-place finishes and a third overall. Weimer, who has two wins, solidified his fifth place in the standings and could move to third in the final three weeks. Weimer, of Rupert, Idaho, trails KTM rider Tommy Searle by just 13 points.
The Pro Circuit team also got a boost from the return of Austin Stroupe, who had been sidelined since suffering a hip injury in round two of the series at Hangtown. The North Carolinian experienced misfortune in the opening moto, finishing 34th, but rebounded and took sixth in the second moto. That was good for 12th overall.
A Solid Debut for a National Champion
Justin Weeks, who won the 450A title and was fifth in the 250A class at the Loretta Lynn Amateur National Championship, made his professional debut at Unadilla. Weeks, riding as a privateer, finished the day in a four-way tie for 17th after placing 15th in the opening moto and 18th in the second. That second moto finish left the Suzuki rider 19th overall, however.
Next week, the series heads to Budds Creek MX Park in Mechanicsville, Md. for the Monster Energy Motocross National on Saturday, August 22.

Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship: Honda Motocross National Team Previews and Series Statistics for Spring Creek
MORGANTOWN, W.V. (July 16, 2009) - As the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross series reaches the half way point, the championship fights are far from being decided as parity rules amongst both the 450 and 250 classes. The second half of the season kicks-off this Saturday with the Honda Motocross National from Spring Creek MX in Millville, Minn. Same-day coverage of the race can be seen on SPEED at 11 p.m. ET.
At the last round of the championship, the world's best riders celebrated the 4th of July at RedBud with yet another new face standing atop the podium at the end of the day.
JGRMX/Toyota/Yamaha's Josh Grant captured his first career 450 Class victory after an impressive 2-1 performance where he showcased his stellar speed to become the fifth different winner in the class in 2009. Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki's Jake Weimer made it two in a row in the 250 Class by relying on consistency when his rivals found misfortune, taking unlikely 2-4 results to the overall win.
450 Class
Rockstar/Makita/Suzuki
Chad Reed is still in control of the premier class standings after a second overall at RedBud. His 21 point lead puts him in a comfortable position heading into the final six races, but with the way the season has gone, it is still anybody's race. At his last visit to Spring Creek in 2007, Reed brought home 10th overall and he will look to improve heavily on that result on Saturday. For teammate Michael Byrne, the season continues to be one of consistency. A pair of seventh place results solidified seventh overall for the Australian the last time out, but third last year in Millville gives Byrne the confidence he needs to make a return to the box for the first time in 2009.
"Millville is another track that is kind of like Red Bud for me in that I love it," exclaimed Reed. "It's one of my top-three favorite tracks that we race on. Having this last weekend off before Millville was great. I worked really hard on my stomach with the hope of being able to be strong and at my very best for the last half of the year. I'm really just working hard on my health so I can put my best foot forward and continue to gain points on second place overall so I can win this championship."
"Millville is a great track," said Byrne. "It's got a little bit of everything - elevation, sand and even clay. It's definitely a fun track and hopefully we'll get the ball rolling this weekend, get in a good ride and on the Rockstar Makita Suzuki RM-Z450 and get some championship points."
JGRMX/Toyota/Yamaha
Grant has been on the cusp of taking that first victory on numerous occasions this season, but bad starts and bouts of misfortune forced him to wait until Michigan where he put together arguably one of the most impressive performances of his career. The premier class rookie was the fastest rider all weekend and came just a bike-length short of sweeping the day's motos. The win rejuvenated his season and has him back in the title fight, just two points out of the top three. His teammate Cody Cooper was also solid at RedBud, capping off a stellar weekend for the JGR team. The New Zealander was resilient en route to fifth overall and it is only a matter of time before he is fighting for his spot on the podium
Honda Red Bull Racing
The red riders continue to be the most consistent team in the 450 pits. Riders Andrew Short and Ivan Tedesco hold down second and third in the standings and are consistently fighting with Reed for their chance at the top. Tedesco has already broken through for his first career victory and if Short continues to ride at such a high level, it will only be a matter of time before he does the same. At the previous round, Tedesco out-dueled his teammate for the final spot on the podium, relegating Short to a strong fourth place finish. Short hopes his second overall in Millville last season translates into that elusive first win.
"I'm thoroughly enjoying myself this season and the good team dynamics have really helped shape my results," explained Tedesco.
"It was great to have a weekend off and just chill out," explained Short. "I spent a week at motocross church camp spending time with kids, helping and teaching them, using the skills and knowledge that I'm fortunate enough to have been blessed with. It's great motivation heading into Millville this weekend - I'm excited! I've been fairly successful there in the past and I expect to be faster this time around. The Spring Creek track itself is prepped really well and always has good dirt. It should be fun."
Monster Energy Kawasaki
For the green machines, super sub Ricky Dietrich continues to be the heart-warming story of the 2009 season. The Washington rider's worst finish through four races with the team is seventh, and he produced a solid sixth place effort at RedBud to move firmly into the top 10 in the standings. Veteran Timmy Ferry's recovery from a broken heel is still taking some time to get back to 100% and last season's championship runner-up has yet to return to top form so far. With a fifth place result to learn from last year, maybe Spring Creek is the site to turn everything around.
"I'm starting to get some confidence in my starts," said Dietrich. "That is what I worked on most these last two weeks and I know I can run up front if I can get a good jump out of the gate."
Jagermeister KTM
After a tough outing in Colorado, Justin Brayton returned to top-10 form at RedBud, bringing home 10th overall on the day. The rookie 450 competitor has experienced some ups and downs so far this season, but his high level of talent and stellar fitness should translate into positive results over the final six events.
250 Class
Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki
Through the first four races of 2009, Jake Weimer didn't have too many high points regarding his results. However, all that changed at Thunder Valley when win number one finally happened after a long and trying wait. The momentum and confidence the Idaho rider received from his first victory has apparently revitalized his season and now with two wins in the bag, he can focus on a steady climb through the point standings where he currently sits seventh, quickly closing in on the top 5. Teammate Christophe Pourcel continues to ride smart, smooth, and methodical and despite the high-paced speed of the class, it is working to his advantage. The Frenchman sits atop the standings with a nine-point advantage and at RedBud continued his streak of winning at least one moto at every round this season. Each week Pourcel is seeing the tracks for the first time, but it has not appeared to hinder him.
"I'm going to keep my program going," explained Weimer. "I just want to stay relaxed because that is when I ride at my best. I've taken some time to work on my radio controlled car and things are going well. It should be a fun weekend."
"It was good to get some time off," added Pourcel. "It is going to be a tough second half of the season and I am ready for it. We have a good team and I know we will be ready for anything."
Rockstar/Makita/Suzuki
After a dominating first moto win at RedBud, the 4th of July looked to be Dungey's for the taking and his chance to re-assert himself atop the standings after Pourcel found early trouble. Moto two looked to have more of the same from the Minnesota rider but a spectacular crash effectively ended any shot at the overall win. Showcasing his admirable resiliency, Dungey brought home a damaged bike to fifth overall and salvaged points to stay right with Pourcel in the title fight. Last season, he took the win at his home track and there isn't a better place to get this season back on track for Dungey than Spring Creek.
"Coming into Millville this weekend, I'm just really pumped to be going into my home track race this year," explained Dungey. "It's a really enjoyable track, and we're just coming off a two-week break so it'll be new and fresh for me. Also, I'll have a lot of friends and family there, so that'll be pretty special. At the same time, I'll do my best to take it like any other race weekend."
GEICO Powersports Honda
Brett Metcalfe led the way for the GEICO riders in Michigan, putting in his best ride of the season to finish fourth overall in a four-way tie for the runner-up spot. The Australian rider appears to get better each and every week and is on the cusp of his first podium in 2009. If a third at Millville last season is any indication, it could be as early as Saturday. Rookie phenom Justin Barcia has scaled back his all-out mentality the past few rounds and it is paying off. After a pair of crashes and tough finishes, he has rebounded nicely and is a consistent podium threat each time the gate drops. While Blake Wharton did not run as strong as he would have hoped at RedBud, the young rider returns to the site of his pro debut in which he turned heads by leading a significant portion of the day. The Texas rider hopes to replicate that result and rebound from his tough outing. Making a one-race appearance for GEICO Honda will be hometown rider Alex Martin. The son of the Spring Creek track owners has more laps than anyone at the renowned facility and with the power of a factory bike beneath him, it could be a weekend to remember in Millville.
"My goal for Millville is to win a race," stated Barcia. "The icing on the cake would be to finish on the overall round podium, that would be great, but I'm hungry for a win right now."
"I really want to thank GEICO Powersports Honda for giving me this opportunity, and my other sponsors who were willing to help me out by letting me ride for the GEICO Powersports Honda team for this one-off race," said Martin. "It's something you never want to pass up, for sure."
Muscle Milk/MDK/KTM
Tommy Searle has been one of the hottest riders in the 250 Class over the past three rounds, posting third overall at each race. The British rider is adapting to the pace of American Motocross each and every week and came close to capturing his first moto victory in Michigan. The podium finish moved him into third in the standings and as his confidence grows each time out on the track, he will be one to keep an eye on at the front of the field. Teammates Martin Davalos and Wil Hahn both posted top-10 results at RedBud, with Davalos running up front early in the second moto. While Davalos works on getting back into race shape after considerable time off for injury, Hahn hopes to build on an impressive eighth place run at Millville last season.
Round 6 Series Statistical Report
- With a total of seven first-time winners across both classes, this is the most parity the series has seen since 1999.
- Mike Alessi is the only repeat winner in the 450 Class in 2009. That is five different winners in six races.
- With moto results of 2-1, Josh Grant became the first overall winner in the 450 Class to not sweep the day's motos.
- Over the past nine seasons, there have been a total of five first-time winners in the 450 Class. Each overall winner in 2009 (5) raced to victory for the first time.
- All three winners in the 250 Class have won two races apiece. Jake Weimer is the first to go back-to-back.
- While his streak of winning the first moto at each round was broken, Christophe Pourcel remains the only rider in the series to win a moto at each event. He also remains the only rider in the series to finish on the overall podium at all six races.
450 Class Stats:
- The first race held at Spring Creek was August 28, 1983. Bob Hannah would win on a Honda.
