AMA Arenbacross Heads to Fresno

Courtesy of Feld Motorsports
AURORA, Ill. – The 2010 AMA Arenacross Series heads west this weekend for the first of two rounds on the West Coast. Fresno’s Save Mart Center plays host to the eighth round of the season while the AMA Arenacross class championship battle continues to tighten up between Babbitt’s Monster Energy/Ti Lube Kawasaki teammates Tyler Bowers and Josh Demuth.

Last weekend in San Antonio, Demuth grabbed his third victory of the season, chasing down Bowers in the closing stages of the race and making the winning pass to close to within 12 points of the lead in the standings. Bowers, who has six victories so far in 2010, looks to reclaim his early-season control on the class and end his longest drought between wins this season.

Lurking in third place is fellow Babbitt’s Kawasaki rider Chad Johnson. The 2008 AMA Arenacross class champion grabbed the third and final spot on the podium at the Alamo dome, giving the squad its third sweep this year. With the move to the left coast, the world’s best arenacross riders will be presented with a unique test of dryer, slicker and more hard-packed soil, adding another element to the challenges presented from the intimate, technical confines of the discipline.

The on-track competition this season has been some of the most memorable in AMA Arenacross Series history. Even with twice as many wins as the rest of his peers, Bowers has had to work hard each and every weekend to sit in such an enviable spot. The battles have been fierce and the talent is deeper than ever, making Bowers’ success that much more impressive.

While the premier class continues to excite the thousands of fans in attendance and veteran front-runners like reigning champion Jeff Gibson and Nathan Skaggs look to break into the win column for the first time this season, the AMA Arenacross Lites Western Regional Championship prepares for its fourth round of seven. Reynard Mods Kawasaki’s Cory Green seized control of the title fight last weekend, breaking a tie atop the standings with GPF Babbit’s Kawasaki’s A.J. Catanzaro. The gap sits at a miniscule two points and each rider has been at the top of his game each weekend. With a full one-race advantage over third place competitor Jim Neese, the fight for the Western Regional crown will come down to this pair of young up-and-comers.

Saturday night’s race will serve as the final round of competition before the 2010 AMA Arenacross Series enters its final month of competition in March.

Tickets for the Fresno Arenacross are available at the Save Mart Center box office, Ticketmaster, ticketmaster.com and arenacross.com. Action begins Saturday night with opening ceremonies at 7:00 p.m. PST.

MotoConcepts Racings’ Ryan Sipes Fourth at Indy

MotoConcepts Racings’ Ryan Sipes Fourth at Indy

Spokane, Wash. (February 22, 2010) – The first round of the Monster Energy AMA 250 East Supercross Series and the seventh round of the 450 Supercross class was this past weekend in Indianapolis, IN. A new level of excitement was injected into the series as a solid group of returning veterans was mixed with an exciting new batch of rookies. One of those veterans, Ryan Sipes, made the statement that he is here to contend for the title.

After qualifying third in practice, Sipes went out and posted a solid second place finish in heat number two, just three seconds behind defending East Champion Christophe Pourcel. MotoConcepts racing again placed both of their 250 riders in the main as teammate Vince Friese finished eighth in heat race one.

In the 250 main, both Sipes and Friese came around the slippery first corner clean with Sipes in fifth and Friese in tenth. Friese went on to tangle with another rider and after picking himself back up he managed to finish 17th overall for the night. The Missouri native will head to Atlanta next week looking to get back into the top ten.

The Kentucky native Sipes began his charge toward the front and moved into third place for the second half of the main. Everything looked positive for Sipes to grab a podium spot until the last couple turns of the final lap, were lapped riders dramatically slowed his progress and allowed the rookie Justin Barcia to pass. It was a frustrating conclusion to the main, but overall a positive start to the season for Sipes.

“It was great to see all four of our riders again advance to their respective main events and there was a lot of excitement in our pits after Ryan finished second in his heat,” commented Team Manager Michael Young. “Having the podium spot swiped out with literally fifty yards to go stung, but we know Ryan will be back and is determined to get on the box.”

In the 450 class, both Dan Reardon and Kyle Chisholm advanced to the main, with Chisholm fifth and Reardon eighth, in heat race two. Reardon hit the deck halfway through the main and called it a night to finish 19th. Chisholm battled with a difficult one-line track and managed to finish 14th overall. After seven rounds, Chisholm sits in 11th for the series and is only nine points away from ninth overall, held by an injured Andrew Short. Both riders will be back for round eight next Saturday night in Atlanta, looking to get back into the top ten.

ROCZEN WINS AT VALENCE INTERNATIONAL

Courtesy of Suzuki
ROCZEN WINS AT VALENCE INTERNATIONAL

Team Suzuki Press Office - February 22.

The second major International event of the European motocross calendar occurred under bright but cloudy conditions at the hard-pack and slippery Valence circuit in France, south of Lyon and Teka Suzuki Europe World MX2’s Ken Roczen won the MX2 class with 3rd and 1st positions in the two motos, before scoring 10th in the Superfinal that saw a mix of 450 and 250 machinery.

Roczen took his works RM-Z250 to the top of the podium for his first attempt at the Valence meeting and for the first time in 2010 as Teka Suzuki World MX1’s Steve Ramon was third overall on his RM-Z450 in the MX1 division.

Still using the pre-season meetings as chances for testing and training, Roczen, and team-mate Arnaud Tonus, ran plenty of laps in the practice sessions and steadily worked on their speed at a chilly Valence. The teenage German, the sensation of the 2009 FIM MX2 World Championship, was consistently one of the top three fastest on race day. He rode to 3rd in the first race before carefully picking his lines and beating World Champion Marvin Musquin in the second. He was the third highest-ranked MX2 rider in the Superfinal.

“I am happy because I did not come here expecting to win and had also felt sick last week which meant that I could not ride much; the weather hadn’t helped us either,” the 15 year old said. “Both the bike and I are on a good level, not the level we want for Bulgaria and the first Grand Prix but we are on the way. We used this meeting for further mileage and training and it went well. It is good to see we are pretty competitive already.”

Steve Ramon rode to 12th, 2nd and 2nd in the sprints and led for a section of the last moto. The Belgian weathered some difficult moments with arm-pump in the formative stages but emerged with a podium finish for his efforts. “I am quite pleased with the result because I suffered a bit with arm-pump again during the Timed Practice and also the first moto,” said Ramon. “My start was not great for the first race and I found I could not really push, so I rode my own speed. We made a change to the bike for the second moto and I was riding a bit more relaxed and could find a better rhythm. The last race was the best for me. I started in the top five and was leading for a while until Cairoli came through. I could stay on his wheel until the finish, so I was happy with that at this stage in the year.”

Team-mate on the factory RM-Z450, Clement Desalle, had an eventful day. The Belgian champion, in his second appearance in Teka colours, was 7th overall with a best finish of 3rd in Moto1. A poor opening phase of the next race meant he had to recover from the lower top ten to claim 5th and his event was prematurely ended in the Superfinal with two crashes. The second of which caused his retirement with a painful arm. “The first moto was the best, I took third. Then I was fifth in the next one after a start that was not so good,” commented Desalle. “In the last race I had the holeshot and was leading for two or three laps until I lost the front wheel in one of the corners. I recovered to the top five after five laps but the slippery track caught me again and I hurt my left arm. At the moment it seems to be nothing more than muscular pain. Hawkstone Park is next for me after some days testing in France.”

Tonus was pushing hard for positions in the second MX2 race after taking 10th at the first time of asking. The young Swiss rider made a mistake and lost two places and then was lucky to emerge relatively unscathed from a frightening looking accident only a few corners later.

The Teka Suzuki teams will remain in southern France for testing this week before attempting the Hawkstone Park International in England on March 7th.

Valence International results:
MX1: 1. Antonio Cairoli, 2. David Philippaerts, 3. Steve Ramon (Suzuki), 4. Anthony Boissiere, 5. Seb Pourcel. 7. Clement Desalle (Suzuki).

MX2: 1. Ken Roczen (Suzuki), 2. Marvin Musquin, 3. Steven Frossard, 4. Gautier Paulin, 5. Valentine Teillet. 16. Arnaud Tonus (Suzuki).

ANAHEIM TOUGH FOR ROCKSTAR ENERGY SUZUKI

Courtesy of Rockstar Suzuki

Team Suzuki Press Office - February 16.

Rockstar Energy Suzuki hit Angel Stadium once again for the third Anaheim round of the AMA/FIM Supercross Series, hopeful of being back to racing at full strength with Ryan Morais rejoining team mate Hunter Hewitt in the Lites class and Tommy Hahn taking on the competition in the Supercross class.

But fate seemed to have other plans as Hahn fell ill the night before the race with a bad case of the flu, and Morais found himself still in great pain on Saturday from the injuries he sustained during his heat race at Anaheim 2.

With two of his team mates out for the night, the spotlight fell on Hewitt (pictured) in the Lites class: He was running a respectable sixth in the Main Event until another rider collided with him while turning onto the starting straight and knocked him over. “You have to watch your back when you’re running up front and that’s something I just wasn’t doing,” said Hewitt. “I was pretty mad about it, but that’s just part of racing and I did my best to keep going.”

The collision and resulting crash left Hewitt towards the back of the pack with his clutch lever bent out of position, but he continued to press on despite the damage and even without the use of his clutch, he managed to retake a few positions by the end of the race, placing 13th overall.

With the final Anaheim round finished, the series moves east for the first time to Indianapolis. Indy also marks the beginning of the Eastern Regional Lites Championship, which will bring in a whole new crop of Lites riders including Rockstar Energy Suzuki’s Blake Baggett and Jake Moss. “Things are going to be very competitive in the East,”

Team Manager Bill Keefe said. “There are a lot of fast riders out there, but Blake and Jake have put in a lot of hard work and we expect great things from them.”

RiderDown Foundation is teaming with the BlueRibbon Coalition at the Dealer Expo in Indy.

Courtesy of Rider Down Foundation

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (February 11, 2009) - This weekend, the RiderDown Foundation is teaming with the BlueRibbon Coalition at the Dealer Expo in Indy.

The RiderDown Foundation (RDF) has procured two vintage, metal signs which were inspired by Bruce Brown and the classic movie, “On Any Sunday”. The signs are framed in a white mat and will be displayed at the BlueRibbon Coalition (BRC) Booth on Saturday to gather autographs from a number of moto-heros. Saturday night, the pictures will travel to the Trail Rider Magazine/Wicked Motorsports party with Gonzo rider, Charlie Williams, for more signatures. Sunday it’s back to the show for more autographs. RDF hopes that Malcolm and others from On Any Sunday will be there to sign the actual metal signs, while other luminaries will autograph the outside mat border; creating what will truly become a collector’s piece. Every person who autographs the artwork will be carefully recorded (these champions know all about going fast, but signatures are often hard to read).

“We will have trouble parting with these,” stated Bruce Vermeulen of the RDF “but for the good of our causes we will forgo the temptation to sneak them onto our office wall. We are planning to auction both pieces off later to benefit both RiderDown.org and the BlueRibbon Coalition. So if you are approached at the dealer show to sign some metal signs with Bruce Brown’s name on them, be proud you made the cut and sign for the good of the sport!”

RDF would like to thank BRC for stepping up and helping with this, as well as Josh Williams, Director of Pandemonium at Old Bob’s (visit www.OldBobs.com) for coming up with this fantastic idea and handling all the details.

About RiderDown Foundation: With a nationwide network of volunteers ready to lend support and assistance to injured riders, RiderDown is actively giving back to the off road community. MORAIS SET FOR ANAHEIM SUPERCROSS RETURN

MORAIS SET FOR ANAHEIM SUPERCROSS RETURN
Team Suzuki Press Office - February 12.

Rockstar Energy Suzuki rider Ryan Morais is preparing for his return to racing in the Western Regional Lites class at this Saturday’s AMA/ FIM Supercross sixth round at Anaheim, California.

Morais had to take some time away from racing after a crash in his heat race at Anaheim 2 resulted in several injuries, including some deep bruising to his kidneys, lungs and the surrounding muscle fibres. After participating in an aggressive rehab program for the past two weeks, he is fit enough to train with the team again and remounted his RM-Z250 this week to get in some solid laps on the practice track.

“Ryan’s times were very good, and he looked comfortable on the bike; like he’d never taken any time off,” said Team Manager Bill Keefe. “We are excited that he is up to speed and ready to race at Anaheim 3.”

Morais missed three races in the series, but finished on the podium every time he lined up at the starting gate. He’s looking forward to getting back on track at Anaheim and is feeling prepared for the race. Was this post helpful? Add yours to our service or subscribe to our feed above.

Arenacross Notebook: Youngstown Ohio

Courtesy of Feld Motorsports
AURORA, Ill. – Through five rounds and eight races of the 2010 AMA Arenacross Series season, Babbitt’s Monster Energy/Ti Lube Kawasaki’s Tyler Bowers has been the rider to beat in the premier AMA Arenacross class, posting six victories – including a five-race winning streak. This weekend, the series heads to Youngstown, Ohio and the Covelli Centre for the first time since 2008.

In recent years, Ohio has served as a hotbed for the sport of arenacross. In a state known as the birthplace of aviation pioneers, it is no wonder that so many high-flying riders in the AMA Arenacross Series hail from the Buckeye State. With hard winters and sparse riding opportunities during most of the year, dirt-bike riders in Ohio go indoors for competition and learn a heightened sense of bike control that translates into every discipline in motocross.

This season, five of the series’ top riders call Ohio home but many more possess Ohio roots. The Ohio army is led by reigning series champion Jeff Gibson, who hails from Thornville. A veteran motocross competitor for many years, Gibson joined the AMA Arenacross Series for the first time last season and he quickly acclimated himself to the intimate, technical competition, recalling the many indoor events he competed in when he was younger.

Another veteran rider who grew up in Ohio is Gibson’s Tuf Honda teammate Brock Sellards, from Sherrodsville. A perennial front-runner and championship candidate, Sellards is a name synonymous with the sport. His ability to make a late-season push is uncanny and now that the season is reaching its halfway point, eyes will be on Sellards as he prepares for his annual charge in the second half.

Another well-known face and past champion Josh Demuth may call Texas home these days, but his blood is in Ohio, born and raised in Dover. Demuth is one of the most successful riders in the history of the AMA Arenacross Series and a significant contributor to his success is that, like so many of his peers, he grew up competing indoors during the winter months, honing his craft on small, technical tracks.

Perhaps the biggest commonality between all three of these competitors is that each possessed the dream and the passion to become successful at the supercross level, competing for a number of years at the pinnacle of the sport but only achieving moderate success. Now, each rider is writing their own legacy in the discipline that kicked-off their careers, capturing numerous race wins and accolades along the way. For each rider, the AMA Arenacross Series has served as somewhat of a homecoming and each has found a place in the heart of the sport and a genuine appreciation for the high level of competition the series provides.

In addition to the veterans, the Ohio youth movement in the AMA Arenacross Series is led by the up-and-coming Spinechillers/Storm Lake Honda trio of Nathan Skaggs, of Chillicothe, Willy Browning, of Pleasantville, and Zach Ames, of Prospect. Each rider is a representative of not only the youth movement within Ohio, but the surge in the AMA Arenacross Series as well. Each rider holds the potential to be future stars in the sport with both Skaggs and Browning achieving early success while Ames is on the verge of breaking through into a consistent challenger.

The Covelli Centre is the state-of-the-art home of the USHL’s Youngstown Phantom’s and is a short drive from Pittsburgh. The arena opened in 2005 and has played host to several entertainment acts since, including the AMA Arenacross Series back in 2008.

The arena has an occupancy of 5,700 and is seen as the center point of the rejuvenation of the Youngstown area.

The first gates drop on the Youngstown Arenacross Friday, February 12 beginning at 7:30 p.m. followed by another night of action on Saturday the 13th at 7:30 p.m. The action concludes with Amateur Day on Sunday, beginning at 10 a.m.

Advance tickets are available for this weekend’s Youngstown Arenacross at the Covelli Centre Box Office, Ticketmaster charge by phone and ticketmaster.com. Tickets cost $2 more the day of the race.

Fans in attendance also can take part in the Track Party on Saturday from 5:00-6:00 p.m. for the chance to meet the riders and get autographs. Simply recycle any MONSTER ENERGY can at the gate entrance for FREE admission. Must have valid Saturday event ticket to enter.

Tickets for all rounds of the 2010 season can be purchased at www.ticketmaster.com and www.arenacross.com.

For more information on the AMA Arenacross Series log on to www.arenacross.com.

"I am thrilled to work with Troy Lee Designs in the launch of McQueen Racing, and proud to support Troy Lee Designs racing team" said Chad McQueen, CEO of McQueen Racing. "Troy is a phenomenal artist, and completely gets the essence of McQueen Racing - the pursuit of pure performance, with an authentic yet stylish spirit. My dad taught me early on to work only with the best of the best - and Troy is the best artist I know."

"It is an honor to work with Chad on the launch of his company, and likewise to have McQueen Racing contribute to the success of our team," said Troy Lee, owner of Troy Lee Designs. "It's been great to witness Chad and his kids carry on the McQueen legacy of racing. I am looking forward to working with the next generation of the McQueen family, helping to develop products that celebrate their passion for racing."

McQueen Racing develops motorsport and motorcycle projects and products that bring to a new generation the pure joy of racing. Founded by Chad McQueen, the only son of the legendary racer and actor Steve McQueen, Chad inherited his dad's passion for racing while growing up on the set of legendary films like "Le Mans" and "Bullitt." Chad began racing dirt bikes at age 6 and by age 12, won his class at the World Mini Grand Prix. He went on to compete professionally in motorsports. His recovery after a crash during practice for the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona lead him to focus on developing custom car and motorcycle projects and resulting in the launch of McQueen Racing. Was this post helpful? SPIKE TV SEES SUCCESS IN STRATEGIC MARKETING PARTNERSHIP WITH MONSTER ENERGY SUPERCROSS

AURORA, Ill. (February 9, 2010) – Spike TV has begun to reap benefits from its multi-faceted, distinctive marketing partnership with Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship. The multi-year deal that began this January enables Spike to strategically target the male 18-34 demographic, which constitutes the core of the network’s audience.
Even though the partnership just launched, Spike has already seen solid results from its partnership with Monster Energy Supercross.
o Spike’s new original series, “Blue Mountain State,” was heavily promoted in the first two supercross events of 2010. Aided by that marketing push, the series premiere drew 105% more men 18-49 than in the same timeslot a year ago.
o Spike’s Facebook® “friend list” has increased steadily in January to over 68,000 with the help of the marketing efforts at supercross events.
o Spike has used its presence at Supercross to help develop its databases through email capture and driving sign up to SMS alerts for fans of the network.
“By immersing Spike brand messaging in supercross, we are able to speak to our audience who craves high-action entertainment,” said Todd Ames, Vice President, Consumer Marketing, Spike TV.
“Feld Motor Sports is proud to welcome Spike TV into our family of sponsors of Monster Energy Supercross”, said Charlie Mancuso, President of Feld Motor Sports, “This is a ground breaking marketing partnership and we look forward to working with Spike TV in the months and years to come.”
SPIKE’s Monster Energy Supercross marketing package includes the following:
Event Signage:
o Spike becomes the name-in-title sponsor for “Holeshot,” a highly visible track feature highlighted in each main event race of the evening. The Spike “Holeshot” will be strategically placed at the first turn on the race course.
o Spike receives a variety of branded trackside banners, branded pit banners, and signage on the awards podium. Spike “Holeshot” winners will also receive a Spike-branded check that will be awarded during the podium presentations. There are 15 events held in venues all across the country and one international event with an estimated attendance between 750,000-1 million spectators.
Television:
o Spike will receive multiple commercial spots during CBS and SPEED Channel’s nationally televised broadcasts. CBS is scheduled to telecast nine events and SPEED will air 16 events this year.
Digital:
o Exclusive content for the Spike.com webpage with the riders of Monster Energy Supercross.
o Spike will have audio mentions on webcasts of supercross events.

A season-long subscription to the official webcast of Monster Energy Supercross, Supercross LIVE®, is available for $39.99: http://www.supercrossonline.com/supercrosslive. MIC Launches Multi-media Campaign at Indy to Permanently Stop the Ban on Youth Motorcycles and ATVs

MIC Launches Multi-media Campaign at Indy to Permanently
Stop the Ban on Youth Motorcycles and ATVs

Members, exhibitors and dealers can text, e-mail, Skype, send letters, and make videos to
voice their support at the 2010 Dealernews International Powersports Dealer Expo

IRVINE, Calif., Feb. 9, 2010 –The Motorcycle Industry Council says now is the time to push for a Congressional solution to permanently end the ban on youth motorcycles and ATVs in a video call-to-action, http://bit.ly/aXpkyu. At this year’s Dealernews International Powersports Dealer Expo, the MIC is hosting a variety of multi-media communication tools and activities so that dealers, MIC members, and Expo exhibitors can voice their concerns, show their support, and urge Congress to take action to permanently end the ban on youth vehicles. “There is tremendous momentum for Congress to amend the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act’s lead content provisions to exclude youth vehicles,” said MIC general counsel Paul Vitrano. “We need our voices to be heard now, and by making all these different multi-media tools available here at Indy, every MIC member, every exhibitor, and every Expo attendee can be part of this massive grassroots effort to finally Stop the Ban.”
The MIC’s multi-media communication offerings at Indy include:
Text – Signage will be posted throughout the Expo encouraging attendees to show their support for the effort to Stop the Ban on youth ATVs and motorcycles with their cell phone by sending the text message “StoptheBan” or “STB” to 30101. A feature on www.stopthebannow.com allows the public to join the campaign directly from the website by entering their cell phone number. Each person will receive a text response after entering their number and upon replying with “yes” will be placed in the campaign.
Letter – Attendees will be asked to add their signatures to letters urging Congress to amend the CPSIA to exclude youth vehicles. Last year’s campaign generated over 5,000 hand-signed letters at the show.
E-mail – Computers will be available in the MIC Business Center (Booth # 4508) so members, exhibitors and dealers can quickly and easily send an e-mail to their U.S. Representatives and Senators and to the Congressional oversight committees to urge them to Stop the Ban on youth ATVs and motorcycles. Last year, over 1 million electronic messages were sent to Congress, and they got the attention of Capitol Hill.
Call – A special computer station will be set up in the MIC Business Center (Booth # 4508) with a link to identify appropriate Members of Congress, and a Skype account that will enable Expo attendees to call their U.S. Representative and Senators directly from the computer to leave a message.
Video – The MIC is encouraging members, exhibitors and dealers to "Send a Video Message to Congress." A camera and filming booth will be set up in the MIC Business Center (Booth # 4508) so that Stop the Ban messages can be created, posted online, and forwarded to Congress.
Each of these tools also is available on www.stopthebannow.com.
Enthusiasts and other stakeholders should reinforce three key reasons why youth ATVs and motorcycles should be excluded from the CPSIA’s lead content provisions:
1.    The lead content poses no risk to kids. Experts estimate that the lead intake from kids’ interaction with metal parts is less than the lead intake from drinking a glass of water.
2.    The key to keeping youth safe is having them ride the right size vehicle. Kids are now at risk because the availability of youth ATVs and motorcycles is limited due to the lead ban.
3.    The lead ban hurts the economy for no good reason when everyone is trying to grow the economy and create jobs. MIC estimates that a complete ban on youth model vehicles would result in about $1 billion in lost economic value in the retail marketplace every year.
The MIC supports the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s request to Congress to give the agency more flexibility to grant exclusions from the lead content limit to address ATVS and motorcycles. The CPSC requested this flexibility in its January 15 report to Congress containing recommendations to improve the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA).
“MIC calls on Congress to draft legislation as soon as possible to either grant a categorical exemption for these products, as would be provided by H.R. 1587, a pending bill with 56 bipartisan co-sponsors, or to give the CPSC the flexibility to do so,” Vitrano said.
Visit www.stopthebannow.com for background information, FAQs, and public outreach tools for the Stop The Ban campaign.
The Motorcycle Industry Council exists to preserve, protect and promote motorcycling through government relations, communications and media relations, statistics and research, aftermarket programs, development of data communications standards, and activities surrounding technical and regulatory issues. GEICO Powersports MiniMotoSX gets new dirt for the upcoming Vegas/Orleans race!
The new red, er, brown-dirt carpet – 1,200 cubic yards worth of fresh clay
will be rolled out for the world’s top mini bike racers this May 7th

ANAHEIM, Calif. (Feb. 9, 2010)Great news for mini bike racers today as officials for the upcoming GEICO MiniMotoSX, presented by Monster Energy, announced that this year’s track at Las Vegas’ Orleans Arena will be constructed with entirely new dirt.

“Twelve hundred cubic yards of fresh soil with just the right amount of clay content so that the jumps stay peaked and the corners don’t rut up too badly,” said Mike Karsting, VP of Events for Source Interlink Media. “Thanks to GEICO and Monster Energy stepping up as sponsors, we’re confident that this new dirt will result in – by far – the greatest mini bike track ever constructed.”

The task to backing Karsting’s claim goes again this year to Schaefer Tracks. “For six years the same pile of dirt has been used to create the GEICO MiniMotoSX, we are thrilled to get a new supply of dirt for the greatest mini bike race on the planet” commented Shane Schaefer.

Also … New for 2010 will be the MMSX World Final race intended to crown the fastest mini bike racer on the planet. The top three Youth and Expert 10” and 12” riders will be joined by the top ten international racers for one insane main event with $5,000 in podium prize money at stake for the Experts!

“The new World Final will be the war to settle the score as to a year’s worth of bragging rights to the coveted King of MMSX,” said Source Interlink Media’s Mike Karsting. “United States’ best versus the top international riders. You couldn’t ask for a more thrilling gate to cap off the night’s show!”

Also, for the first time ever, MMSX at the Orleans will feature electric bikes competing head-to-head with the combustion bikes in the 16” class. After years of being an exhibition class, electric bikes will finally get the chance to see if they can hold it down against the gasoline-powered bikes. Will they be able to keep up? Could they dominate? Are they gonna get waxed? You’ll have to be in Vegas on May 7th to find out!

US Supercross Lites West Series: 5th round San Diego, CA
The fifth round of the AMA Supercross West Lites Series marked the first round for FMF/KTM rider PJ Larsen after earning a replacement ride on the Factory KTM Team just days prior to the race. Larsen's eventual 8th place finish at Qualcomm Stadium satisfied his new team and presents a mark to improve from going into the next week's race.

With only a few days to prepare for the Supercross round, (Larsen has been focusing on motocross for his ride with the JDR Motorsports/Moterex/KTM Team in Australia) Larsen came to San Diego excited for his new challenge and ready to place his KTM bike in the top of the pack. "Despite the fact that I didn't have much time to practice for Supercross, I felt confident going into this round," remarked Larsen. "My KTM motor and suspension are great, and when you have confidence in your bike, everything else comes naturally."

The early morning rain storm caused the track officials to delay practice until 5:30pm that evening, allowing only one timed practice session for each group. Larsen was in the first practice group and put in a good run earning the fastest lap time in his practice session and the tenth fastest qualifying lap time overall. After practice, he and fellow KTM rider, Phil Nicoletti, began to prep for heat #1.

When the gate dropped for the first Lites heat, Nicoletti got off to a great start putting his St. Lawrence Radiology/Alessi Racing/KTM in 2nd position around the first turn. Larsen didn't have as great of a jump and came around mid-pack. Halfway around the first lap Nicoletti was able to pass the current leader, Max Anstie, to take over 1st place. Meanwhile, Larsen had started his climb through the pack and sat in 5th as they crossed over the finish line on lap number one. Nicoletti continued to hold the front position for the next three laps, successfully holding off a hard charging Wil Hahn, followed by Max Anstie, Travis Baker and PJ Larsen. On the fourth lap, in an aggressive pass, Hahn snatched the lead from Nicoletti. With two laps to go, Nicoletti remained close and finished 2nd in the heat, Larsen crossed the line in 6th overall.

In the Last Chance Qualifier, the KTM Factory Service/One Industry rider Sean Borkenhagen, KTM privateer rider Hugo Dagod and Jake Canada battled for the final qualifying position in the quick four lap sprint. On the last lap and final turn, Dagod came on strong and put a block pass on Canada for the final transfer position.

With the rain still holding off, the main event was set to start right on schedule. The riders lined the gate ready to put in a solid fifteen laps. As the riders rounded the first turn, Nicoletti squeezed his KTM up into a top five position with Larsen a few spots back around 9th. With one lap down, Nicoletti held 4th position with Larsen back in 9th. On lap two, Nicoletti slipped to 5th position when Cole Seely was able to get by while Larsen moved up one spot passing Antonio Balbi for 8th. The two riders remained consistent and held their positions for the majority of the race. Larsen climbed as high as 7th position and held that place from lap 4 to lap 13 until he was passed by Trey Canard with two laps to go. Larsen eventually crossed the finish line in 8th place with Nicoletti a few seconds ahead in 7th.

"Overall I am happy with my result tonight," remarked Larsen. "I tightened up around lap ten because I haven't been riding Supercross lately. But I feel good. I am happy with a top ten finish in my first race this season and I hope to improve upon that finish at Anaheim 3 next week."

Larsen will race the Anaheim 3 Supercross for the FMF/KTM Team at Anaheim 3 and hopes to be joined by Tommy Searle who has been on the sidelines since Anaheim 2, recovering from a shoulder injury.
