San Bernardino, CA (May 26, 2018) –The hills of Glen Helen Raceway offered many ups and downs, but the GEICO Honda team delivered more consistent finishes in Lucas Oil Pro Motocross, with all three team riders finishing in the top ten for the day in the 250MX class. Jeremy Martin scored a podium finish again, taking third overall with 5-2 scores. His back-to-back podiums to start the season leave him third in points. RJ Hampshire went 8-9 for seventh and Chase Sexton was 10-8 for ninth.
Martin won a moto at Glen Helen last year, but he did it by scoring a holeshot. He didn’t gate quite as well this time, and this year’s Glen Helen layout and soil conditions—softened by a surprise rain early in the morning—made passing tougher than usual. He even ended up hooked in a second-moto battle with his brother, Alex. Jeremy won their second-moto fight, but Alex edged him for second overall on the day
“Thoughts are good,” said Martin. “Second last weekend, third this weekend. We’ve still got a lot of racing left. We got the bike better from last weekend. We did some testing. I tried something a little different in the first moto and wasn’t kind of jiving. I had a massive battle for 30 plus two. Just got annihilated from, Justin Cooper. Man, we were battling. Then moto 2 got off to a better start. Aaron [Plessinger] was a little bit faster right there in the middle part and got Alex [Martin] and I. Then I battled with the brother forever. I was like, “Dude, get out of the way!” I was able to send it in deep and get him on the outside. It was a good battle. He went off the track a couple times. Reminds me of racing back a couple years ago when we’d battle during the week.”
Hampshire spent the week in California testing and was happy with some improvements with the bike.
“Another pretty quiet weekend,” he said. “Struggled to get a good start and it’s hard to get that pace if you’re not up with the top guys from the beginning. I’m pretty sure these past two weekends were my best finishes ever at the opening rounds, so happy to get these out of the way and start heading east! Bike handled much better than last weekend so we made improvements. 7th on the day, looking forward to Colorado.”
With passing at a premium, Sexton had his work cut out for him. He didn’t have the start he wanted in moto one, coming around the first lap of moto 1 in 19th. He finished 10th. He started 10th in moto two, climbed to eight, and stayed there for the rest of the way.
The team heads to Thunder Valley Raceway in Lakewood, Colorado for round three of the championship this weekend.
