McElrath started the race off strong but almost got stuck in a deep section of mud early in the race and fell back from second to fourth. He did his best to stick to his lines, surviving the worst race the riders had seen in recent memory. With the race shortened to only eight minutes plus one lap, McElrath pushed to make sure he held onto his fourth overall.
“That might have been the toughest race I’ve faced ever,” said McElrath. “I was hoping it would have been a good equalizer race, but the track didn’t even stay (enacted) for the heat race, let alone the main event. It was tough but once I almost got stuck, I just focused on keeping steady and finishing. Let’s hope that Salt Lake City isn’t like this, but it’s been known to be unpredictable as well.”
