RaceTrackerMX, Finally There is an App For Fast

Intrepid Creations has released RaceTrackerMX in the iTunes App Store, a productivity tool for motocross racers that records lap times for multiple riders and bikes at the same time.  Current bike setup, track conditions and race results are then stored with the lap times. Racers can compare lap times from previous races to optimize their bike’s setup for the next race. RaceTrackerMX is now available on the Apple iTunes App Store.

“I believe this app will improve a riders race results within just a few races,” said Intrepid Creations owner Brian St. John. “This app will allow racers, mechanics and team managers to accurately monitor the on track performance of a rider or an entire race team. Race results can then be compared in lists and graphs.”

RaceTrackerMX is simple to use and requires very little setup. Enter riders, bikes and tracks into the system only once. Next time you practice or race, link the riders and their bikes to a race and your ready to capture lap times for each moto or heat race that they are in. RaceTrackerMX also has a handy checklists section where riders and mechanics can check off parts and gear as they load up for a race weekend.

Intrepid Creations is dedicated to continued development of RaceTrackerMX and will release updates as new features are added.

AMA Motocross Champion Returns To His Roots With The Iconic Gear Company

AMA Motocross Champion Returns To His Roots With The Iconic Gear Company
July 26, 2011 – Los Angeles, CA - Few companies in motocross history have made quite the impact that JT Racing has. From the ’70s to the ’90s athletes wearing the iconic JT brand were recognized as the best of the best, and within that select community, David Bailey was considered to be in a class his own. The AMA Hall of Famer was a “poster child” for the brand from his days as an amateur all the way through to his pro racing career, and now with the resurgence of JT Racing USA, Bailey is back on board!
Beginning in 1979 Bailey racked up national and world motocross victories and championships until a career-ending practice crash prior to the 1987 season left him paralyzed. Through it all, Bailey’s winning spirit and drive exemplified the essence of JT Racing. Now, as the company enters a new era in 2010 under the guidance of CEO David Dray, JT Racing USA is proud to welcome Bailey back as a part of the iconic brand. As the company’s new Creative Director, Bailey will play a key role in the look, feel and message of JT Racing USA.
“When the new CEO of JT (David Dray) first contacted me I thought one of my friends was playing a joke on me,” Bailey said. “Between his excitement and his vision for the revival of JT Racing, I really couldn’t believe it. Now I’m here and it is real! After seeing the new products they released, I knew I could help them do it even better and that’s what they want from me.”
“It was the same when ESPN called back in 1994 to see if I could help with the TV broadcast they were planning to air,” Bailey continued. “Piece of cake! But with JT, it is personal and actually emotional at times. It was the gear I wanted as a kid and won all my titles in and it was the first real job I ever had when my career ended. So in many ways, I’m right back where I belong, and where I want to be!”
The JT Racing revival is materializing under the guidance of CEO David Dray, a lifelong motocross enthusiast and clothing industry entrepreneur. “We are very thrilled and honored to have such an icon of the sport as David Bailey, back on the JT Racing USA team,” Dray commented. “Before as a legendary rider and now as our Creative Director, David is one of the key components to help continue the JT Racing Legacy!”
ABOUT JT RACING USA - Launched by John and Rita Gregory in the late 1960′s, JT Racing ruled the motocross world for decades. It was the gear of choice for racing legends like Smith, Hannah, Johnson, Lechien and Bailey. For 2011, JT Racing returns to the sport it helped build with an innovative line of motocross gear: pants, gloves, jersey and a trick new helmet not only reminiscent of the ground-breaking ALS-2 of the early 1980′s, but one that will make you rethink helmet technology entirely. With many past champions – Glover, LaPorte, Lechien and Hansen – developing, testing and promoting the new line of gear, JT Racing is poised to unleash the style and innovation that will once again become the gold standard in motocross. JT Racing USA – History. Innovation. And heart.

Beautiful Washougal, WA. turned ugly on MXHeaven Team.

Courtesy of MX Heaven
Beautiful Washougal, WA. turned ugly on MXHeaven Team.
Perris, CA – The beautiful Washougal surroundings and the Columbia river temperatures were welcomed by the team after the long haul from the sweltering mid-west temperatures.
Calle Aspegren had continued to recover from his shoulder injury and although he could not charge as  hard as he liked to, it was enough to qualify for the race in 37th place.
For the races he set a steady pace with the intent to finish without risking crashes and further injury. This strategy worked well, especially in the first race, where he finished 29th. However in the second race, he could not keep up the charge to the end and had to slow down and settle for finishing in 38th, pretty much last place of those running.
The drama belonged to Fredrik Noren and it started already during the timed practice.
While working himself methodically up to speed, he hit a rock in one of the deep ruts that were forming and it broke his chain guide and derailed the chain, which in turn became jammed and broke the engine cases so that the oil leaked out. Luckily he has already set a time good enough to qualify 26th, so after an engine change he was ready for race one.
After a midfield  start and a bar banging first lap, Fredrik settled down to a steady pace and advanced quickly to 18th. But when he set up to pass the next rider in his sights, he spun out and fell on the unpredictable track surface. He started all over again but could only get back to a disappointing 24th and no points, before the end of the race.
For the second and final race, Fredrik again started well, and advanced by picking off riders one by one until he was in 14th place, having passed several well known riders along the way, when the engine suddenly gave up and he had to coast to a stop, just a few laps from the end, resulting in a disappointing 34th place and again no points.
“ I am really disappointed, I felt like I could have scored solidly in both motos and advanced to the top 20 in overall points “ said Fredrik later. “ I really enjoyed coming to Washougal, a place I had heard about so many times. But now I am setting my sights on Unadilla, where my goal is to complete two solid motos, finishing in the low teens.”
The National tour now takes two weekends off and the team has already returned to the Perris, CA. base to prepare for the famous Unadilla, NY. race on Aug 13.

Team Ohlins USA Washougal Race Report

Courtesy of Team Ohlins
Hendersonville, North Carolina: It was the top of the world for Team Öhlins USA in Washougal, Washington, when A.J. Catanzaro rode to a top-20 finish for the first time in the Lucas Oil AMA Motocross Series, taking a sound 19th place finish.

The weekend started out well for Catanzaro with a 26th-fastest time in first practice for the faster group, and it quickly got better in Practice #2 when he laid down a lap ten-places faster, earning gate number 16 for the Moto 1 start, the highest up that Catanzaro has ever qualified for an AMA Pro MX race. In Moto 1 Catanzaro slid back to a 28th finish, the bike and him not in tune with each other. After a few changes, in Moto 2 Catanzaro rocked it, nailing his start and working the field for his historic Team Öhlins USA finish in 19th.

Also of note, Catanzaro wasn’t passed by the race winner until the last lap, finishing side-by-side with him. He considered unlapping himself as the leader slowed but didn’t want to disrupt the winner’s race, even though it allowed the 20th-placed bike to close up on him as he neared the checkered flag. For this spanking-new team with young riders, this top-20 finish is an accomplishment in which everyone at Öhlins USA shares the pride.

Team Öhlins USA’s Michael Clarke didn’t attend the Washougal event, and rider Garret Toth took part in qualifying but, due to being hampered by an injury suffered earlier in the week, for the first time he was unable to earn a gate for the mains.

Catanzaro said, “Overall it was a step in the right direction at Washougal. I’m finally starting to prove where I should be. It was a cooler weekend so my heat exhaustion issue luckily didn't come into play. In practice I was able to learn the track quickly and I put in a solid time to qualify 16th. I got a good gate pick but I didn’t make it work on the start. I struggled with the bike in Moto 1, and found myself fighting it through the race. I got pretty severe arm pump and wasn't able to push through.

“We made some changes on the bike for Moto 2 I made it work. I got off to a great start and just rode a solid race, making very few mistakes. I was able to charge the entire Moto, finishing 19th and scoring my first points. Hopefully I can keep the ball rolling and keep improving.”

Team Öhlins USA Off Road Manger and team principal, Stacey Berger, said, “This race weekend got off to a terrible start. Garret had a pretty bad practice crash on Tuesday, which injured his wrist. He was unable to ride or train for the rest of the week, throwing him out of his routine. He showed up in good spirits but physically he wasn’t close to 100%. I’m disappointed for him because I know how hard he works every week to get better and faster. He’s already been pushing through a torn ACL and a damaged MCL. He gave it his all and we’re all very proud of him for his effort.

“A.J., on the other hand, had a great weekend overall. His qualifying set up allowed him to run a very quick time in the second session. Unfortunately, this wasn’t the best race setup. We made a few changes to the bike for Moto 2 that really allowed him to push the whole race distance. I feel really bad for Trey (Canard) and we’ll be praying for him to have a speedy recovery. The restart after the red flag worked to A.J.’s advantage by getting him a couple of hot laps to get him warmed up properly. To score our first points as a team is a proud moment for all of us. I can’t say enough about how hard all of our riders and our mechanics work. This is another step in the right direction for us. Now we just need to work at continuing to move higher in the standings, rather than stopping here at being happy with a top-20 finish. Thanks to all of our sponsors for their continued support.”

Team Öhlins USA is sponsored by: Triangle Cycles of Danville, Virginia; Yamaha; GYTR; MX1 West; Acerbis; Ariete; Yoshimura; Kenda Tire; No Toil; Shoei Helmets; Gaerne; Leatt; Langston Racing Academy, which has been instrumental in providing top-level training for the riders; HIT Center (High Intensity Training) of Jacksonville. www.ohlinsusa.com

DC Announces Gymkhana FOUR

Courtesy of DC Shoes
HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA: DC and Ken Block are proud to announce that production has begun on another gymkhana video project titled, Gymkhana FOUR. Fans can expect all of the driving precision, speed, and tire smoke that Ken has become known for to be taken to a whole new level with his latest project, set to be released in late Summer 2011. To chronicle the making and upcoming release, DC is launching a Gymkhana FOUR web page today at: http://www.dcshoes.com/auto.  Fans of the DC x Ken Block Gymkhana video franchise can check the website to see exclusive photos and news leading up to the release of Gymkhana FOUR.

“The DC x Ken Block Gymkhana franchise of videos is the most successful viral video content ever produced from the action sports, footwear, and auto industry,” said Anton Nistl, DC’s President. “It’s with amazing content like this that DC extended its reach in the digital and social media realms, we’ve seen our Facebook page grow from one million followers last October, to an industry leading 5.6 million. With Ken and our in-house DC creative team working to produce the finished product, the new video will undoubtedly be the most successful video yet.”

The car that Ken used for this project is a brand new racecar that his Monster World Rally Team recently completed. A modified 2011 Ford Fiesta, the car (codenamed the H.F.H.V.) made its first debut to the public this past Saturday at the Gymkhana World Tour event at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, CA. It will be used again later this week when Ken competes at X Games 17 in two separate rally events, Rally Car Racing and RallyCross.

"I'm unbelievably stoked about how Gymkhana FOUR is going," said Ken. "I did it in a brand new racecar that we've just finished building and it's an absolute beast. Plus, the concept for this next chapter is on a completely new level. The locations we visited and action we documented are absolutely wild. Fans are going to be floored when they see the finished clip. I can say with full confidence that Gymkhana FOUR is going to be better than Gymkhana THREE.  And that is saying a lot, because I thought I would never be able to outdo GYM3."

The car used for Gymkhana FOUR, named the H.F.H.V. (Hybrid Function Hoon Vehicle), is a 100% new car for Ken. It incorporates the word hybrid into its name based on it being a multi-discipline vehicle. With quick changes, it can be set up for three distinctly different driving modes: performing gymkhana, racing in RallyCross and racing in the U.S. Rally America series. Visually, fans will be able to tell which setup the car is in based upon wheel colors and styles. The color-coding is: white for gymkhana, green for RallyCross and black for Rally America. In addition to the visual cues, the H.F.H.V. also undergoes less visible, internal changes between setups, such as the radiator moving between the front and the rear of the car depending on the cooling needs of the mode it’s in, as well as each mode having its own individual suspension setups, engine programs, turbos, restrictors and more.

To accompany the all-new build, a new livery has been created that retains the drip element from Ken’s Gymkhana THREE car, but incorporates vertical pin stripes as well as a tonal repeat pattern from Ken’s 2011 Ford Fiesta RS WRC car. Block’s newest DC footwear and apparel, inspired by the updated car livery, will be featured in Gymkhana FOUR and become available to consumers when the video launches.

Since launching the first video, Gymkhana Practice in 2008 the franchise has expanded to include two other major videos, Gymkhana TWO and Gymkhana THREE, as well as a number of supporting clips. To date, the franchise of driving performance videos has been viewed more than 110 million times globally, making it a viral phenomenon. Recognized far beyond the action sports and auto industry, the videos have won numerous creative awards and made prestigious lists. Most recently, Gymkhana THREE made YouTube’s official list of the “Top 10- Videos of 2010” and Ad Age’s list of “Top Viral Videos of 2010.”

Engine Ice Hi-Performance Coolant Names New Corporate Mascot, “Marty, The Engine Ice Polar Bear”
CycleLogic Products, Inc., the manufacturer of Engine Ice Hi-Performance Coolant is proud to announce the name of our new corporate mascot, “Marty, the Engine Ice Polar Bear.”
Engine Ice Hi-Performance Coolant held a month long contest during July to name the new company mascot, a polar bear. Eric Sherman of California came up with the winning name of “Marty,” not through creativity or by being fancy, but by honoring a long-time friend of both his and Engine Ice who passed away several years ago.

Marty “Marcad” Cadalora was a motocross lover and racer to his core. The old phrase “eat, breathe, sleep, live, love and ride motocross” must have been written about Marcad, because that described him to the letter. Marcad died the way he likely wished to, and not in some horrible riding or racing accident, but on an August afternoon, six years ago next week. After Marcad completed a practice session at a local motocross track, he sat in his chair and rested, typically napping, as he often did, only this time Marcad didn’t wake up. Marty’s last actions was a good riding session, some bench racing with friends and the last sounds in his ears was that of motocross bikes on the track, as he fell into his quiet slumber and onward to heaven.

Eric Sherman of Long Beach, California, will receive one of the first issue Engine Ice T-Shirts featuring the newly named “Marty the Polar Bear,” a case of Engine Ice Hi-Performance Coolant and $100 in cash...over a $200 value. Eric will also receive a MX vs ATV ALIVE “Swag Pack,” consisting of a T-shirt, poster and copy of the hit game, MX vs ATV ALIVE.

If you would like to see all the suggested names, you may do so through the Engine Ice Facebook page, www.facebook.com/EngineIceCoolant

Star Racing Washougal Race Report

Courtesy of Star Racing

Washougal, WA. - The AMA MX National Series rolled into the beautiful state of Washington to attend round eight at Washougal MX Park. DNA Shred Stix/Star Racing/Yamaha comprised of #25 Ryan Sipes, #35 Kyle Cunningham, #387 Gareth Swanepoel, #533 Gannon Audette, and , #76 Kyle Partridge came in with hopes of keeping their status of fixtures up front intact. Things proved to be tough, but our day at Washougal did end up having some bright moments that occurred sporadically.

Taking top honors on this weekend would go to Cunningham, who continues to bring his total package together and match it up with the raw speed he holds. After a strong 7th place start in moto one, the likeable rider pulled himself up through the field. The task was accomplished, and he successfully piloted the #35 YZ 250F up to 3rd place by the races end. Moto two was a much more trying showing, sitting 18th on lap one, Cunningham battled for every position through the races entirety. By doing so, he took a hold of 7th and made it his own with four laps until the finish due to his determination and closed this round out positively.

Bringing another positive to a tough day was Swanepoel, grabbing an 8th place start in moto one, #387 put the hammer down. After moving up one spot very quickly, Swanepoel kept the fight going. With less than four laps to go, he battled relentlessly to maintain his position. In the end Swanepoel fought off all attacks, seeing him go on to a finish score of 7th. Gareth’s moto two began well with him sitting 4th momentarily. The talented South African climbed to 3rd on lap four, riding hard and holding his position all the way until three laps to go. When the checkers were thrown, Swanepoel had slipped back into 4th, and his consistency was a building block.

The next guy in line was Audette, pushing forward all the while in moto one, the rookie started 18th only to jump four spots early on. Now sitting in 14th, Audette raced from there to take a tally of 12th. After starting poorly around 25th in moto two due to being chopped off out of the gate, Audette bounced back and netted 14th.

Having just plain horrible luck throughout the outdoor series and still on that path is Sipes, after riding up into 1st in moto one following a great start. Things unraveled mid moto when his strength frustratingly fell off, struggling to continue on Sipes finished out 15th. Prior to moto two beginning, it was decided Ryan would sit out and look into tests to determine his issues of unexplainable fatigue. More updates will follow when available.
Results:

Moto 1 Moto 2 = Overall Finish

Kyle Cunningham 3rd 7th = 4th

Gareth Swanepoel 7th 4th = 5th

Gannon Audette 12th 14th = 12th

Ryan Sipes 15th DNS =20th

Also making the big show again, was Kyle Partridge our 450F pilot who put two steady moto’s together going 18-31 for 20th overall.

Be sure to tune in to the X Games this weekend to see Jessica Patterson go after the Women’ Super X Gold Medal!

After his spectacular crash in Millville, MN just a week ago, TwoTwo Motorsports / Bel-Ray Racing’s Chad Reed came to the Pacific Northwest for the Washougal MX National. Beaten and bruised, Reed put on a valiant charge, but could only manage 7-4 moto finishes for 4th overall. Reed relinquished the red plate as the series points leader and slipped to 3rd in the standings, just 9 points out of the lead. Reed will take advantage of the break in the schedule to recover and come back charging on August 13 at the famous Unadilla racetrack in New Berlin, NY.
The Circuit de Ste-Julie in Quebec was the site of Round 6 of the CMRC National Championship this past weekend. The Kini / Red Bull / KTM / IMX / Bel-Ray Racing team of Kieran Leigh and Mason Phillips continued their consistent finishes for another weekend.  Phillips used 7-12 moto finishes to a 9th overall, while Leigh used 6-6- scores to finish 5th overall. Rockstar Makita Suzuki- Washougal Race Report

Courtesy of Rockstar Makita Suzuki

WASHOUGAL, WA – Team Rockstar Makita Suzuki absolutely dominated round eight of the 2011 AMA Pro Motocross Championship at the Washougal National in Washougal, WA, on Saturday afternoon. Not only did Ryan Dungey take the overall victory on his Yoshimura-equipped Rockstar Makita Suzuki RM-Z450, he was also joined on the podium by his teammate Brett Metcalfe, who finished third. This result was Dungey’s third victory of the season and puts him just one point shy of the lead in the overall championship points standings. Meanwhile, this result marks Metcalfe’s first AMA Pro Motocross podium of the year.

Reigning AMA Pro Motocross Champion Dungey celebrated a stellar day at Washougal. In the first moto, he got a great launch on his Rockstar Makita Suzuki RM-Z450 and slotted into second position. He dogged the leader for most of the 30-minute moto and then tried to reel him in with just three laps left. Dungey made a pass for the lead in the outside of a turn but lost the rear and went down. He quickly remounted and finished up in second place. In the second moto, Dungey again got a good start but a crash resulted in a red flag early on. When the moto was re-started, Dungey got the holeshot and rode a flawless race to take the moto win and the overall victory.

"The weekend was good,” said Dungey. “Practice went well, though we made some changes to the Rockstar Makita Suzuki RM-Z450 going into the first moto that worked out. We got off to a good start and settled in pretty good, then I was trying to make a pass for the lead and made a mistake and had to settle for second. In the second moto, I got off to a good start and was able to put down some good laps and open up a bit of a gap. With that, we took the moto win and the overall for the day. The track was tough, slippery and challenging, so you had to be really patient with throttle control. But the RM-Z450 was working awesome – a lot of traction, handled well and the Rockstar Makita Suzuki team did a great job as well. Now we’ve got a little bit of a break, we’re going to take some time off this week and get ready to get at it for Unadilla. I like that track, it takes a lot of finesse and throttle control, it gets really rough and choppy, and I always look forward to going back there.”

Teammate Metcalfe also left Washougal in a celebratory mood. In the first moto, he got a good start, put his head down and rode his Rockstar Makita Suzuki RM-Z450 from sixth place into fourth. At that point, he kept it consistent and smooth, and finished fourth. In the second moto, Metcalfe got a good launch after the re-start and was running in fifth. But he rode his Suzuki aggressively, and slowly but surely charged through to third place in the moto. These two solid moto results handed Metcalfe third place overall for the day.

"This first podium feels awesome,” said Metcalfe. “In moto one, I got a pretty good start on the Rockstar Makita Suzuki RM-Z450 and I was up in the top five, and I went into the second corner and took a bad line and got pushed wide and slipped back to eighth. But I was able to make some moves and get up there and I finished in fourth. In the second moto, I was able to get a much better start and I made a few moves and got in fourth. I had to close the gap up on third and I made a move, and finished that moto in third and that was good enough for third overall. I want to thank everyone at Rockstar Makita Suzuki and especially Yoshimura, the RM-Z450 was really fast out there. Now, I’m really looking forward to Unadilla. I love racing there, it’s a really good track and I’ve done well there. We’ve got the Suzuki figured out, I’m comfortable and I can start to attack and be aggressive and try and push and battle for some wins now.”

The Rockstar Makita Suzuki team’s next event is the ninth round of the 2011 AMA Pro Motocross Championship on Saturday, August 13th, at the Rockstar Energy Unadilla National in New Berlin, NY.

FMX Star Mike Metzger Injured

Courtesy of
Temecula, CA – Official Press Release - On Saturday July 16th while riding at his home training facility, Freestyle Motocross professional Mike Metzger known worldwide as the “Godfather of Freestyle Motocross” suffered a crash.  Mike was transferred to a trauma care facility and in now in excellent care. The family and Mike are very gracious for everyone’s support and curiosity, but there have been a ton of rumors and false stories circulating the internet.  “I was feeling good so I wanted to get a few jumps in to get ready for X Games.  I missed a seat grab is all.  Just a little mistake.  Thanks to everyone for the positive thoughts” Mike Metzger.  At the family’s request and the requirements of the hospital there are no visitors permitted, repetitive phone calls to the hospital are an aggravation to the staff as well.
The facts of Mike’s current condition are that he remains in stable condition is fully aware and coherent and is making improvements daily.  There are no signs of paralysis and he has movement of all his extremities.  There are currently no surgeries on schedule and Mike’s body is working hard to repair itself.  Dr. Chao and Dr. Nelson from Oasis Sports Medical Group are also looking in after him as they have done work on Mike in the past.
The Athlete Recovery Fund (ARF) is on location with Mike and his family and is making arrangements to assist with the financial burden of this injury and the upcoming rehabilitation.  While ARF is not the end all solution to insurance and definitely not a replacement for insurance the experience of our nonprofit has earned us an education of how to work with hospitals, doctors and physical therapists.  Bottom line ARF will help Mike so he can return to his bike stronger than before.  Donations can be made to support this 501(c)3 Charity at www.athleterecoveryfund.com.
Mission Statement:
To provide professional athletes in BMX, FMX and Skateboarding with financial support after a severe injury and granting funds for rehabilitation, equipment, long-term disability and educational scholarships

MX Heaven Millville Race Report

Courtesy of MX Heaven

Fredrik Noren improves while Calle Aspegren is forced to sit this one out.

In another first for the Swedish riders on the MX Heaven Team, the heat and humidity of the Millville afternoon was like nothing they had ever experienced before. The previous days rains had also made the track muddy and slippery, especially in practice, but that did not give the Swedes any concern.

Calle Aspegren who is struggling with a shoulder injury, actually felt pretty good during early practice, but qualifying on the tough track got the better of him and he did not have the strength and speed to make it into the race.

Fredrik Noren on the other hand had no problems with the slippery mud and qualified easily in 23 rd place.

For this event, Fredrik realized that he needed to put together two solid motos without silly crashes or tip-overs and he did just that.

In the first race, he started in the middle of the pack, but set a quick and steady pace, making it up to 14th at the end, with lap times not far from riders around 10th place.

For the second race, conditions were tougher than in the first race because the track had dried out and the heat and humidity was much higher.

The same scenario played out, a decent mid pack start and steady advance. But in the end, Fredrik had spent too much energy early on and he wisely backed off, ending up in 17th place, for an overall 15th for the day, his best up to this point.

“I am pretty happy with an overall 15th under these difficult conditions. Two solid motos was exactly what I wanted to do and I can build on this now and do better in the next few races”, said Fredrik after the race.

” It looks like the week at home at MXHeaven in Perris paid off pretty well” said Team manager and riding coach Stefan Elvin. “We worked on starts and consistency and that is exactly what Fredrik showed today.”

Both Calle and Fredrik will stay with the team motor home for the spectacularly scenic drive from Minnesota, through the Dakotas, Montana, Idaho and Oregon to Washington state for next weeks race at the spectacular Washougal track near Vancouver, WA..

Star Racing Millville Race Report

Courtesy of Star Racing

Millville, MN. - After a one weekend break the DNA Shred Stix/Star Racing/Yamaha team was set to get back into the swing of things at the top level. Made up of #25 Ryan Sipes, #35 Kyle Cunningham, #387 Gareth Swanepoel, #533 Gannon Audette, and #1 Jessica Patterson, as well as, #76 Kyle Partridge. All six riders returned to action for the seventh round of the AMA MX National Series at the Spring Creek Motocross Park.

First up was Cunningham, who had another strong performance which was much needed. Cunningham set himself up in moto one by grabbing the holeshot, leaving him with a great opportunity ahead of him. From there, he rode aggressively in the early laps mixing it up with the leaders while holding 3rd. Cunningham stayed strong well into the race, keeping close to the top riders, but he came up a little short of the podium which lead to his eventual finishing spot of 4th. Another holeshot in moto two, Cunningham stayed persistent leading the first lap. Once he was passed, Cunningham stayed gritty and rode right on the leaders wheels and stayed a factor. Relegated back to 3rd, Cunningham held there much of the race but late in the going he slipped to 4th. Giving the FMF backed rider a stellar overall score of 4th.

Next in line, Swanepoel had really strong rides going in both moto’s. In moto one, Swanepoel had a super impressive go of things when he started 6th. Sliding back to 8th mid moto, Swanepoel got going and charged until the end where came away in 5th. Moto two saw him hold down 15h on lap one, only to fall back further to 20th. Swanepoel regrouped like he did in previous races and forged his way back up to 12th.

Also having one good moto, one bad moto on the weekend was Audette. Audette made his presence known by showing flashes of real speed, and held down 15th for most of moto one before settling for 15th. Audette started his second moto with a 12th out of the gate; from there he had one of his best showings seeing him compete around the top ten through the duration and eventually took 10th.

Feeling good Sipes started moto one in 4th, pushing hard and sitting inside the top five by mid moto. Unfortunately, heat and fatigue for Sipes would follow, and lead to him finishing in 13th. Moto two started pretty solid for Sipes, upfront and securing 6th, the Kentuckian hung tough and stayed upfront briefly. As the moto progressed, Sipes could not come to terms with his body and the track, which led to him slipping very far back and eventually he pulled off.

Results:

Moto 1 Moto 2 = Overall Finish

Kyle Cunningham 4th 4th = 4th

Gareth Swanepoel 5th 12th = 8th

Gannon Audette 15th 10th = 9th

Ryan Sipes 13th 35th =19th

Also adding to the great race results, was Jessica Patterson our WMX pilot who put two steady moto’s together going 2-1 for 1st overall.

A less than stellar day for Partridge was truly unfortunate, after three crashes in moto one, he’d gut out a long battle only to get 31st. Partridge tried to race through adversity, as he suffered from some sort of a complicated fatigue issue that many struggled with, and though he finished moto two, a hard fought 33rd would be all he could muster.

Bel-Ray Racing-Weekend Wrap-Up

Courtesy of Bel-Ray
FARMINGDALE, NJ – July 18th, 2011 – Bel-Ray Company, Inc.  – Bel-Ray Racing-Weekend Wrap-Up
This past weekend proved to quite exciting for Bel-Ray’s professional racing teams.
Coming into the AMA National at Spring Creek MX Park National in Millville, Minnesota TwoTwo Motorsports / Bel-Ray Racing’s Chad Reed held a 16 point lead over series rival Ryan Villopoto. Reed convincingly won the first moto and was set to do the same in moto #2, when disaster struck. In what has been described as the crash of the season, Reed was ejected from his bike nearly 30 feet in the air. He got to his feet and although beaten and bruised, Reed showed the heart of a champion and soldiered back from dead last to take 14th by the end of the moto, salvaging valuable championship points. Reed’s determination allowed him to maintain the points lead going into next weekend in Washougal, WA.
Tech3 Moto2 team racer Bradley Smith came into Germany with the momentum of 3 consecutive podium finishes. Smith would start the race from the third row and while making his move on the pack, Smith was forced off the racing line and into the gravel trap when he was going into the first turn. Smith was quick to rejoin the racing action, but had to do battle from the back of the field. Using all of his skills, Smith was able to put on a charge through the field and up into 17th place by lap 16. While diving into Turn 3, Smith lost the front end and went down. He was unable to get his bike running again and was forced out of the race. It was his first DNF of the season. Smith’s misfortune pushed him back to 5th in the overall points standings. Teammate Mike DiMeglio also had a difficult weekend and was only able to manage a 16th by the end of the race. The series returns to action in the Czech Republic on August 14th.
TM Factory Racing rider Tanel Leok recovered from a rough weekend in Germany the week before and rebounded with 12-7 moto finishes for 10th overall in Latvia. Leok’s fine race moved him up to 12th overall season’s point’s standings. Teammate Petr Smitka made his return to racing after time off due to injury. Smitka used 24-17 moto finishes on his way to 20th overall. The series will enjoy a 2 week break before racing resumes in Belgium July 31.
Round 5 of the CMRC National Championship series came to Gopher Dunes in Tillsonburg, Ontario this past weekend. The Kini / Red Bull / KTM / IMX / Bel-Ray Racing team of Kieran Leigh and Mason Phillips were both in action. Phillips used 19-12 moto finishes to an 11th overall, while Leigh used 7-8 moto scores to finish 7th overall. Phillips is currently in 9th and Leigh is in 7th in the overall standings as the series head to the Circuit de Ste-Julie in Quebec this upcoming weekend.
FMX Star Blake “Bilko” Williams had a great performance at this weekend's Red Bull X-Fighters Event in Madrid, Spain. The newly signed member of Bel-Ray’s professional support program was second overall in this prestigious event.

Spring Creek MX: Midterm Results for Team Öhlins USA Riders

Hendersonville, North Carolina: Team Öhlins USA rider, Michael Clarke, nearly, nearly made the Spring Creek MX Mains of the Lucas Oil AMA Motocross series, knocking on the gates a mere point-nine from earning entry, qualifying 44th in a field of 67 riders hoping to make the Motos. He’s ready.

About his day in Millville, Minnesota, Clarke said, “I’m getting closer and closer at every race, from qualifying 68 at High Point to qualifying 44 at Millville. The day started out with a lot of overcast and dark clouds rolling in. With all the rain from the Friday before the track was going to be very soft and muddy. I went out, first one on the track and never letting up. I was able to hit every jump, except the big uphill double. I worked the track in good and qualified 7th in my heat.

“I was comfortable with that but I knew the track was going to dry up and be faster for the second practice. I went out in the second practice trying to be one of the front runners. With only a 10-minute qualifying session, I rode hard on every single lap. I never let up but was always making little mistakes that cost me those little tenths of a second. I ended up coming 7th in that practice too.

“I thought I’d made it. I was feeling good and the bike was feeling really strong and was handling well. Unfortunately, I qualified 44th and even though having to go to the gate as an alternate it still wasn't enough. I was .9 seconds off from earning a start. I have a month off before Unadilla and I'm going to work as hard as possible. Next time I get on the track I’ll be lining up on the gate.”

Teammates Garret Toth and A.J. Catanzaro made the mains with a 28th and 32nd qualifying spot, respectively, improving their gates with each event this season. And learning the value of rewarding an improved gate with a good start.

Toth told it like this: “First practice it was a little muddy from all of the rain the day before, but I was feeling good on the bike. I was in the A practice so I was riding with the fastest guys. The practice was pretty messed up and we had to stop half way through so the track crew could fix a section of the track. For Practice 2 we recouped and went out to qualify even further up.

“In Moto 1 I got a terrible start. Throughout the race I got tired, it was very hot and the track was crazy rough but I managed to get a 23rd place. In Moto 2 I had another bad start and then had some brake problems about half way through the first lap, setting me back from the pack about half a lap. I felt really good the whole race and was catching back up to the pack pretty well. I managed to get all the way back up to 28th, which was really good from how far back I was.”

Catanzaro put it his way, “We got a ton of rain the days before the race, which made for a rough and rutted track. Practice was muddy and made it challenging to get in a good time. But I was able to squeeze into the race.

“In the Moto 1 I got a mid-pack start and slowly started passing riders. I made my way up to 23rd before falling. I lost about a lap trying to start my bike. I finally got it going and finished the Moto in 28th, coming from way back. In Moto 2 I got a good jump and came around the first corner in about 13th. I maintained a top 20 position until about 3/4 of the way through the race when I was struck with heat exhaustion. I’ve been talking with everyone, and trying to get as much info as possible on preventing myself from getting so tired. I've been training like crazy and I'll be able to find the solution soon, so I can improve my results.”

Stacey Berger, Team Öhlins USA Manager, said, “This was a tough race weekend for the whole team. We started out with a bike issue, unable to get oil to the sight glass of the engine. With a bit of direction from the Valli Motorsports team, Nick Burns and Tim Wilkie went to work. Although the suggested problem wasn’t it, it did get Nick and Tim far enough into the engine to find the actual problem. I just want to say thanks again to Valli for showing such sportsmanship and the use of tools. With only an hour before tech inspection the engine was lying in pieces on the work bench. I can’t say enough about how well our mechanics perform under pressure. I’m very proud and thankful to have them on our team.

“I’d like to thank Paul at Leatt for setting the guys up with the Leatt hydration pack. I know A.J. and Garret both put it to good use in both Motos. Every week our highs become higher and our lows are almost nonexistent. It’s a shame that Garret had something get caught in his brake pedal, causing the rear tire to lock up. Once he was back on track his lap times matched those of the top 10-15 riders. But he never gives up and to come back from half a lap behind the next closest rider for a 28th place finish was quite an accomplishment. A.J. had another strong race weekend as well. He had a good start in Moto 2 and showed he can run up front. This is where he wants to be and I know he’ll be there week in and week out before the season is over. Thanks again to all of our sponsors for their support and thanks again to MX1 West for the new gear. The guys really stood out this weekend.”
