Bel-Ray Racers Conclude National Motocross Series at Lake Elsinore

Courtesy of Bel-Ray

FARMINGDALE, N.J. (August 26, 2013) ― The 2013 AMA Pro Motocross Championship series came to a close on Saturday afternoon at Lake Elsinore in Southern California. Temperatures in the triple digits and a rough challenging course combined to make for a difficult day for Bel-Ray’s racers and teams competing there.
Leading the Bel-Ray charge for the weekend was Rockstar Energy Racing’s Ryan Sipes. A crash and subsequent injury suffered at the Millville, MN round has hampered Sipes’ charge toward the front. His 13-14 moto finishes were not indicative of the way he rode but in a class with great talent, a good start is necessary to challenge. Sipes’ starts on Saturday were less than ideal, and the Kentucky native had to come from back in the field to earn his result. 13th overall was not what Sipes had hoped for but going into the off season, he can look back on 2013 positively. “It wasn’t a bad weekend aside from my starts. That part was bad. I feel good though. I’m safe; my lap times were good, even coming from 76th place. Last race of the year; it was a good day, and I’m happy.” Sipes finished 16th in the overall series standings.
Also competing in the 450MX class were Bel-Ray racers Nick Wey and Derek Anderson. Both privateer riders experienced ups and downs throughout the series. Wey was forced to miss two rounds due to an injury but achieved positive results during the summer. He finished in 17th place in each moto, and came in 17th overall. Wey was just outside the top 20 in the series standings, in 22nd place overall. Colorado privateer Anderson has been travelling the series with his girlfriend and recording the riders’ trials and tribulations all summer long on the popular YouTube series Man Vs Moto. Anderson scored points at six rounds this summer and earned 30th place overall in this highly competitive class.

In 250MX racing, Rockstar Energy Racing Bel-Ray-backed Jason Anderson experienced his breakout season. He experienced the first outdoor podium win of his career in Millville, MN and has shown flashes of brilliance all season long. He is expected to be a top championship contender in 2014. His 17th place first moto was hampered by a second moto 32nd place finish. In the second moto, Anderson was in a top three position and riding well, until a handlebar to his ribs caused his demise. Anderson recorded 20th overall for the event and a top 10 overall season finish in 8th place. Anderson’s teammate for the last two rounds of the season, Michael Leib, suffered a hand injury at the previous round in Utah but he came to the final round and attempted to tough it out. Unfortunately, the pain was too much, and he was forced to retire.

With the motocross series concluded, the racers will take a short vacation before resuming preparations for the 2014 racing season.

The 2013 Northeast Shootout at Winchester Speedpark in Winchester, NH

The 2013 Northeast Shootout at Winchester Speedpark in Winchester, NH

All the best racers in New England will be headed to Winchester Speedpark this Labor Day weekend (Aug 31-Sept 2) for the Northeast Shootout presented by Alias MX gear and SK Energy. It's three days of motocross, music, ice cream, fireworks and fun.

Track owners Dave and Suzanne Boisvert had this to say, "For 6 years running we hosted the New England Regional Championship which attracted 800-1400 entries, lots of Industry support and great competition.  That event attracted riders
from further than New England and many of the rules and classes did not match up to National standards and frustration was felt.  During this time off we thought about how to re-invent the race so that we could address the flaws and align it to other large event structures so that it could flow more seamlessly during the event, especially when it is time to crown champions. We know we can put on a good and large event here, we know the riders miss an event of this caliber in the Northeast, It's Time....She is back, better than ever!

The winner of each class will receive $500 from Alias and SK in addition to a BIG trophy and a gift bag with products from Loctite, Tucker Rocky and more. Riders in the second through fifth spots will get goodie bags and custom Northeast Shootout plaques.

Saturday will be the practice and qualifier day then the racing will start on Sunday with two motos for each class on that day and the final (long) motos will be run on Monday.

Leticia Cline will be on hand to present the awards on Monday.

Red Bull AMA Amateur National Motocross ChampionshipAchieves Unprecedented Media Exposure in 2013

Loretta Lynn's Logs 23 Total Hours of Live Racing Coverage

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (August 20, 2013)- It was a breakthrough year for the 2013 Red Bull AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship presented by AMSOIL, as the most prestigious amateur motocross national in the country was accessible to millions of viewers around the world. For the first time in the event's 32-year history, live race coverage of each of the 36 classes was available to viewers across multiple platforms, including a live webcast on RacerTV.com, Live Timing & Scoring on MXSports.com and first-time live coverage on network television as part of the Red Bull Signature Series on NBC.
Held at the Loretta Lynn Ranch in Hurricane Mills, Tenn., a total of 21 hours of racing were broadcast live on RacerTV.com from Tuesday, July 30 - Saturday, Aug. 3. Over the course of five days, viewers from 145 different countries tuned into RacerTV.com to follow the racing action at Loretta Lynn's, resulting in nearly 348,000 page views on the website.
"The unprecedented live coverage on network television and the world wide web proved to be monumental for American Motocross as a whole, but we were especially thrilled to see how many committed amateur motocross fans tuned in to all platforms to follow the racing action throughout the week," said MX Sports Event Director Tim Cotter.
The culmination of the week's exceptional media exposure came on Saturday with the Red Bull Signature Series broadcast of the Loretta Lynn's amateur motocross championship. The two-hour live show on NBC featured the final moto in both the 250 B and 250 A classes, along with multiple in-show features of past, present and future champions to enhance the storytelling in the broadcast.
"Perhaps one of the most exciting aspects is to see viewership numbers of an amateur motocross event not only rival some of the country's most popular professional sports but to actually outperform Saturday's broadcast of other major televised motorsports events is just outstanding. MX Sports is proud to be involved with such great partners and of course to reward the athletes and families that worked so hard to get to Loretta Lynn's," Cotter added.
Furthermore, MXSports.com experienced record-breaking traffic as Live Timing & Scoring garnered nearly 58 million page views with a total of 1,347,711 visitors throughout the week. Full results from the 2013 National as well as a list of all 36 National Champions are available online.
The 2014 Red Bull AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship presented by AMSOIL will take place the first week in August at the Loretta Lynn Ranch in Hurricane Mills, Tenn. For more information, visit the series website atwww.mxsports.com.
About the Red Bull AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship
The Red Bull AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship is the world's largest and most prestigious amateur motocross racing program. The national qualifying program consists of 50 Area Qualifiers (February through May) and 12 Regional Championships (June), hosted at select motocross facilities across the country. The qualifying system culminates in the National Final (first week of August) hosted annually since 1982 at the home of country music star Loretta Lynn in Hurricane Mills, Tenn. Nearly 20,000 racers attempt to qualify in 36 classes for the 1,446 available positions at the National. Christened "The World's Greatest Motocross Vacation", the National event serves as a launch pad for some of the biggest names in professional motocross and supercross, including Ricky Carmichael, James Stewart, Ryan Villopoto, and Ryan Dungey. The national program is produced by MX Sports, Inc., a West Virginia-based race production company and sanctioned by AMA. For more information, please visit www.mxsports.com.

Southwick Gets a New Promoter

Courtesy of MX 338

We have some great news! The legendary sand motocross track at the Southwick American Legion Post 338 is not closing. After months of working overtime, the Legion has finally selected a new partner to help bring our historic facility to a whole new level of performance. After considering 6-7 very qualified potential offers, one offer clearly stood above the rest. The Legion’s board has unanimously selected the offer from Michael Grondahl. Mr. Grondahl has many ties throughout the business world and most importantly he has direct ties to the motocross industry both as an avid past motocross racer and a current partner of the Geico Honda race team. In addition, Mr Grondahl has brought Gary Yellin along as a consultant to his team. Gary is the son of Southwick legend Bernie Yellin, the original founder and successful operator of MX338 for many decades. Our expectations for MX338 are sky high!
Michael Grondahl is the co-founder and former CEO of Planet Fitness, a fitness club chain which he grew from one gym in New Hampshire to the largest fitness chain in the world. Planet Fitness currently has over 675 locations and serves 4.6 million members. This business experience will prove invaluable to support his plans for MX338. But we believe the key to Mike’s future success with MX338 lies in his passion for the sport of motocross. Mike raced his first NESC moto at Southwick in 1979 and earned his AMA professional motocross license in 1981. His grass roots knowledge of motocross and love for the sport made our decision an easy one.
Luckily for MX338, Mr. Grondahl became a better businessman than rider, and over the last 5 years he has proudly been a partner in the Geico Honda race team which boasts numerous AMA 250 championships. This year the Geico team will take a big jump by filling departing 450 rider Kevin Windham’s boots with Eli Tomac, who will race both SX and MX in the 2014 season. In addition to the Geico partnership, Mike recently started the Alias clothing line with longtime industry veteran Jeff Surwall, Jeff Makrzak, and the legendary Factory Connection suspension guru Rick Zielfelder.
Mike Grondahl is obviously a very busy guy and when we asked him what drew him to want to get directly involved in the success of MX338, Mike responded, “The thought of Southwick closing was just not an option that I could sit back and do nothing about. I remember when I was only 15 standing at the fence at the old finish line jump screaming for my hero JoJo Keller. So many motocross legends like Bob Hannah, Doug Henry and John Dowd have graced the sand whoops at Southwick. For me, getting involved was an obvious step for the luckiest guy alive!”
Mike continued, “Very soon we will negotiate Southwick’s 2014 schedule and there are some new ideas that we need to agree upon with the Legion. I want to express my sincere thanks to the Southwick American Legion Post 338 for choosing me and for being absolutely fair and very open-minded to all of the various issues that have surfaced. At the recent Amateur Nationals held at Loretta Lynn’s ranch in Tennessee, Carrie Coombs told me in no uncertain terms there will be no 2014 National held at Southwick and there probably will never be one in the future. American Legion Southwick Post 338 has saved Southwick and it is now my job to bring some BIG races to this legendary sand track!”

Rockstar Energy Racing Moves to KTM

Courtesy of Rockstar Energy Racing

Corona, CA - Bobby Hewitt’s Rockstar Energy Racing (RER) Team, is pleased to announce it has signed a three-year contract with KTM Motorsports for its team to race aboard KTM motorcycles in both the AMA Supercross and Pro Motocross Championship Series. The team will make its KTM debut on October 19, 2013 at the Monster Energy Cup
President and Team Owner, Bobby Hewitt, expressed his enthusiasm for the announcement, stating, “As a satellite team, we will always be the little engine that could, but having the support of KTM is a huge advantage. We are delighted and grateful to race KTM motorcycles and eagerly excited for the opportunity to utilize KTM’s new Factory Services program. This will be a very exciting venture for our team.”
The KTM brand has had great success over the past two seasons capturing both 450 and 250 Motocross and Supercross class wins. Both KTM and RER strive to continue to improve the overall race results and exposure gained in professional racing. Through KTM’s Factory Service Program, which allows racers and support teams the opportunity to purchase the same engine and suspension components as the factory team, the RER Team will have the platform it needs to deliver the results that the team, it’s riders and it’s sponsors are looking to achieve.
For 2014, RER will continue to support Davi Millsaps as its premier 450 Supercross and Motocross class rider. It will also field a two-man lites team with returning rider Jason Anderson as well as the 2013 Rookie of the Year, Joey Savatgy. The title sponsor will remain with Rockstar Energy Drink and the remainder of the 2013 season sponsors will return to support the team for the 2014 season.
Team rider, Millsaps, commented, “I believe with my team’s support and my dedication to training that I can win on the KTM. I am excited for this new opportunity and am expecting another great season as I contend for the championship.” His teammate, Anderson, added to his statement, explaining, “I raced KTM’s for my last few years as an amateur and really loved the motorcycles. I am happy with the team’s decision to switch to KTM’s and I feel the bikes will be a good fit for me this season. I hope to put the KTM on the box at the opening round in Anaheim.”

MotoConcepts Racing: UNADILLA MX Report

Courtesy of Moto Concepts

SPOKANE, WA (August 10, 2013) – After taking a week off, the tenth round of the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship headed to Upstate New York at Unadilla Valley Sports Center. An abnormal overcast and chilly day bestowed upon the Unadilla Valley race track. Known for its natural terrain and deep valleys, Unadilla presented some new and modern track designs this year. As they prepared the track for a historic MX National, Smartop by MotoConcepts rider Mike Alessi (#800/450) geared up for another day of racing.
During practice Alessi finished 3rd in the 450 class which granted him a decent gate pick for the first Moto of the day. Alessi didn’t get the greatest jump off the start and held 20th place as he came around the first corner. Dissatisfied by the position he was in, Alessi attacked the pack in front of him and slowly started picking away at his competitors. An ongoing battle between Alessi and J. Weimer emerged as the two fought for the 9th position. Eventually, Alessi conquered and passed #12 but shortly after, on the final lap, he crashed before the deep valley, “Gravity Cavity”. Fortunately, he was able to get up quickly and finish the lap and Moto and secure 12th place.
Alessi lined up for the second Moto of the day preparing and hoping for a better start he knew he was capable of achieving. Lined up near the left outside of the gate, Alessi took off but quickly got tangled up with T. Canard before they reached the first turn. As they both flew over their bars and off the side of the track, a carnage of several bikes piled up behind them. Alessi went down hard with his shoulder taking most of the impact. As a result, he was unable to finish the rest of the Moto and rode back to the pits with frustration in his eyes. A 12th and 39th finish gave him 18th overall for the day. Without those precious points from the second Moto, Alessi lost several positions in the points standings and now sits in 10th.

6D Helmets, Tomac Top Podium at Unadilla

Courtesy of 6D Helmets

Brea, Calif. – Eli Tomac once again had another stellar performance at round 10 of the AMA Lucas Oil Pro Motocross series with a convincing win at Unadilla in New Berlin, NY. In an interview after the race Eli stated, “I love my 6D! It’s a big part of my program and my confidence on the bike. Not only does it have great safety benefits; it’s light, comfortable and cooler than anything I’ve ridden in before. For the speed we’re racing at in this day and age, it’s the only helmet I have full faith in!” Tomac’s lead now stands at thirty-nine points over second place with two rounds remaining.
6D Helmets would like to congratulate Wil Hahn on capturing the Motorcycle Superstore Holeshot Award for the season, netting Wil a cool $15,000 pay day!

BTO Sports Unadilla Race Report

Courtesy of BTO Sports

EVENT RECAP:
Andrew Short looked good during practice as he would put down the 9th fastest time of the day. In moto 1, Short continued his string of great starts, as his KTM Factory Services motor launched him out of the gate to round the first turn in third.  From there Short would be entrenched in battles throughout the moto and would finish 6th.  In moto two, another great start would provide the base for another great finish, as he would finish 7th.  Short moves up to 6th in points with two rounds left in the series.
Matt Goerke is looking more comfortable with every moto as evident with his ride this past weekend at Unadilla.  In moto 1, Matt would ride strong, battling through the field to finish 14th.  Moto 2 Matt used his Pirelli Scorpion MX tires to dig deep for traction as he would get a good jump out of the gate.  Matt would again stay strong to score another 14th, taking 12th overall for the day.
Michael Byrne day did not go as planned, as his return to Unadilla was not as expected.  After a good start in moto 1, Byrne would once again get bit by the Unadilla track as he would tweak his knee. A sprained knee and pulled muscles prevented Byrne from lining up for moto 2.

Cobra Jett! Cobra Moto’s Jett Reynolds dominates Loretta’s

Courtesy of Cobra

The pride of Bakersfield, Calif. sweeps the 51cc & 65cc 7-9 divisions, going 6-0 in motos … Tennessee’s Casey Cochran adds the 51cc 4-6 title for Cobra Moto

HILLSDALE, Mich., (Aug. 6, 2013) – The American-made Cobra Moto competition dirt bikes enjoyed a 1st place-sweeping performance this past weekend at the Red Bull Amateur National Motocross Championship, presented by AMSOIL at famed country singer Loretta Lynn’s Ranch.

Leading the charge on the Cobra Moto bikes was California’s Jett Reynolds, an eight-year-old in the 7-8 age 51cc and 7-9 65cc divisions. So dominant was Reynolds – going six-for-six in 1st place moto victories - that Reynolds’ effort was rewarded by the AMA, which bestowed upon him the coveted “Youth Rider of the Year” … an award never before given to an eight-year-old.

“Absolutely amazing,” said Cobra Moto President Sean Hilbert of Reynolds’ effort this past week/weekend at Loretta’s. “You saw history being made with Jett every time he took off out of the gate.”

Reynolds was most convincing in the second moto of the 65cc 7-9 class, coming out of the start sideways and in 39th (out of 41) place, only to pass back up to the front a mere three laps (of seven) later. Reynolds then crashed while passing into first place, got back up and was in the lead by the end of the same lap he crashed on! And this was against the best 65cc racers in the world, including Cobra Moto’s former 51cc Loretta’s champ Gage Linville (Georgia).

Joining Reynolds on the 51cc 7-8 podium was New York’s Reed Cooper in 3rd place, while Missouri’s Brock Lassiter (3rd) made history for Cobra Moto in the third 7-9 65cc moto when he joined moto winner Reynolds on the box – giving the American-made Cobra CX65 its first-ever double 65cc class moto podium Loretta’s!

The intensity didn’t fade one bit in the 51cc 4-6 class with Hilbert calling it the “The deepest 4-6 field I’ve seen at Loretta’s in the past decade.” Cobra Moto’s little guys on the 50JRs were led by Tennessee’s Casey Cochran, who ho raced a very consistent and fast 2nd/2nd/1st three motos. Joining Cochran on the 4-6cc Cobra Moto podium sweep at Loretta’s were Arizona’s Noah Gordon in 2nd and California’s Haiden Deegan – son of MX/FMX great Brian Deegan – in 3rd place.

“Casey was just flat out fast – and got faster as the week progressed,” said Hilbert. “Noah had two strong motos to help him to 2nd overall and Haiden, after a tough first moto in the mud – which is doubly hard on anyone from California – came back strong for 3rd. Again, there were ten kids in this class that really stood out, where in past years there were maybe three to four.”

Scoring Cobra Moto’s final overall podium at Loretta’s – aboard a six-year-old oil injected Cobra 50JR – was Pennsylvania’s Levi Leatherman, who placed 3rd overall in the 51cc 4-6 Special Limited class.

Feld Motor Sports announces 2014 AMSOIL Arenacross schedule

Courtesy of Feld Motorsports

AURORA, Ill. (July 29, 2013) – Feld Motor Sports® announced the schedule for the 2014 AMSOIL Arenacross, featuring Ricky Carmichael’s Road to Supercross. The 2014 AMSOIL Arenacross season kicks off on Friday, January 3, with two nights of racing from Worcester, Mass., and the DCU Center. From there, the championship travels throughout the country, across 11 additional states before crowning a 2014 champion. Tickets will be available to the general public on Friday, August 9. Cross Club® Members, Inside Dirt Subscribers and past AMSOIL Arenacross ticket purchasers will be able to capitalize on an exclusive opportunity to purchase tickets starting Tuesday, July 30. For more information and to become a Cross Club member for free, visit http://www.arenacross.com/CrossClub/.

The 2014 AMSOIL Arenacross season is highlighted by visits to every time zone in the U.S., from the shores of Massachusetts to the golden state of California. In addition to familiar stops like Baltimore and Tulsa, Okla., the championship will also make its first visits to cities like Nampa, Idaho, and Hidalgo, Texas, as well as some of the country’s most popular tourist destinations like Reno, Nev., Albuquerque, N.M., and Salt Lake City.

On the heels of a groundbreaking season in 2013, AMSOIL Arenacross is set to once again leave its mark on 2014 with a championship battle that is sure to last all the way to the final lap in Salt Lake City. With one of the most intense race formats in all of motorsports, AMSOIL Arenacross will bring its competition to fans across the country with two main events during each night of action, head-to-head bracket racing, and the dramatic Race to the Championship, a playoff-inspired showdown to crown the champion.

“The 2014 AMSOIL Arenacross season is set to host the most competitive racing action in the history of the sport,” said Feld Motor Sports Vice President of Two-Wheel Operations Todd Jendro. “With the enhanced race format and highly talented field of athletes participating in Ricky Carmichael’s Road to Supercross advancement program, the competition will be better than it has ever been before and we are excited to put on a great show for the fans.”

Reigning three-time AMSOIL Arenacross Champion Tyler Bowers will return in 2014 to defend his Arenacross Class crown, with his sights set on becoming just the third rider in history to win four consecutive titles. Bowers enjoyed a dream season in 2013, overcoming a potentially heartbreaking injury late in the season to not only capture the AMSOIL Arenacross Championship, but then make history by becoming the first rider to win a Main Event in both AMSOIL Arenacross and Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, in a single season.

“I have to say that 2013 was both the toughest season of my career and the most rewarding,” said Bowers. “The AMSOIL Arenacross season was a tough battle all the way until the end and I was fortunate that a broken collarbone didn’t end my chances at winning that third title. Once the season was over, I had the chance of a lifetime to ride in Monster Energy Supercross and managed to one-up myself by winning the last race of the season in Las Vegas.

“I have no idea if the 2014 season will be filled with as much drama and excitement as last year, but I am definitely eager to find out. I’m looking forward to the opportunity to defend my Arenacross Class title and putting on a show for all the fans who will be cheering us on.”

The 2014 AMSOIL Arenacross season will also feature a pair of regional championships in the Arenacross Lites Class. Riders committed to competing for the title in either the West or East region will battle it out for a chance at winning a coveted AMA National title and use it as a stepping-stone to more success in AMSOIL Arenacross.

Five-time Monster Energy Supercross Champion Ricky Carmichael will once again be an integral part of AMSOIL Arenacross and the Road to Supercross. The Road to Supercross program requires all amateur riders to hone their skills at AMSOIL Arenacross before making their transition to Monster Energy Supercross.

“The competition in AMSOIL Arenacross is already at an all-time high as everyone is laying it on the line each week for a shot at the title, but now with the Road to Supercross I bet we reach even higher levels with the nation’s fastest up-and-coming riders making their way through the championship” said Carmichael. “I’m really excited to see some of these rising stars go head-to-head against Tyler Bowers and the rest of the Arenacross veterans. The mix of raw speed from the young riders and experience from the veterans will result in incredible racing.
“I’m definitely not going to miss a chance at being a part of the 2014 season,” Carmichael continued. “The Greensboro and Tulsa rounds are already on my calendar, and I’m looking forward to attending additional races to meet the fans and sign some autographs.”
