Reigning GNCC ATV Champion Chris Borich clinched the opening round of the Parts Unlimited River Ranch GNCC in Florida at the weekend.
Borich and his Suzuki QuadRacer R450 were the favourites going into the race, and after coming form behind to take the win, he showed the XC1 class that he’s ready to dominate again in 2010.
Borich started the race in fifth place. His smart, calculated moves put him in second place, and at the end of the race he passed for first place and took the win more than a second ahead of second place.
“It feels good to get the first one out of the way,” said Borich. “I knew it was going to be a rough track and I just paced myself and then made my move. I just let the track come to me and everyone made little mistakes and I was able to take advantage of it. I pretty much made my moves around the mud holes and anywhere else I could find.”
Borich and his QuadRacer R450 will be at round 2 of the series, which takes place on March 6 and 7 in Washington, Georgia.

"The 2009 season marked the first year as a sponsor of the GNCC series," said Ken Hutchison, vice president of MotorcycleUSA.com. "We discovered the market to be a perfect fit for our brand. The racers, their families and the spectators bring a lot of energy to these events and provided us with the spark necessary to come back even stronger for 2010."
"We jumped in with both feet last year as the Title Sponsor of the Snowshoe event," continued Hutchison. "The location was fantastic as was the racing, not to mention the exposure MotorcycleUSA received. If you are a fan of off-road racing, I cannot think of a better race to participate in or to spectate. The Snowshoe Resort and the people were very accommodating. The rooms, the restaurants and the nightlife all add up to make this a spectacular experience."
MotorcycleUSA.com will also be the Holeshot Award sponsor for both the XC1 and XC2 motorcycle and ATV classes. Last year, MotorcycleUSA.com paid $250 to each XC1 motorcycle and ATV Holeshot winner. That total remains for 2010, with an additional $100 to each XC2 motorcycle and ATV holeshot winner at all 13 rounds.
"Sponsoring the Holeshot Award for both the XC1 Bike and ATV classes worked well for us last year," explained Tim Clark, Director of marketing for MotorcycleUSA. "So well, in fact, we will be sponsoring both the XC1 and XC2 classes for 2010."
"The Snowshoe GNCC was also very successful for us," continued Clark. "It opened enough doors that we decided to up our game to include the Title Sponsorship of both the Yadkin Valley and The Titan events. Helping the riders is one of our main goals and sponsoring the Holeshot Awards and posting large purses like we did with the Snowshoe last year serves a great way to benefit the racers."
The 2010 Can-Am Grand National Cross Country Series kicks off on February 27- March 2 as part of Daytona Bike Week at the Westgate River Ranch Resort in River Ranch, Florida, with the Parts Unlimited River Ranch GNCC. ATVs race on Sunday, February 28, and bikes race on Tuesday, March 2.

Series Marked at Ironman

Several manufacturers use the race to unveil their newest models and this year Can-Am, Yamaha, Polaris and KTM will be on hand offering demo rides. The track itself is also one of the toughest of the series. The land in the area is totally flat, but the course runs near riverbanks with varied elevation changes, so the track boasts some of the steepest hill climbs on the circuit. The tough course and added festivity of the end of the season race makes the Ironman one of the favorite rounds of the 13-stop series. The Ironman event is named after the late GNCC ATV Champion Bob "Ironman" Sloan, who hailed from Indiana and helped make the event happen.
Newly crowned ATV Champion Chris Borich will try to end the season with an eight-win streak to finish the season with 10 wins, but now that the season is over, several riders will be vying for a win at the unique track. Others will try to prove they deserve another chance at a factory ride in 2010.
FRE KTM's Adam McGill still has yet to win a race this season, despite sitting solidly in third place the majority of the season behind Yamaha's Taylor Kiser who hasn't won a race since round one in Florida. Nine-time GNCC Champion Bill Ballance, who sits in fourth, hasn't yet said whether he will return for the entire series next year. He might be swayed by an Ironman win.
Other contenders include Yamaha pilots Brandon Sommers, Donnie Ockerman and Johnny Gallagher, and popular privateer Bryan Cook on his Houser Racing Honda. The XC2 Pro-Am Championship is still up for grabs, as well, with FRE KTM's Josh Kirkland holding the points lead over Yamaha rider Brian Wolf.
