Team USA: Dungey, Short and Canard

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Last Saturday, prior to the start of Round 9 of the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship from Unadilla Valley Sports Center, the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) announced three of American motocross' biggest names to complete the lineup of Team USA for the 2010 Motocross of Nations from Thunder Valley Motocross Park in Colorado. Reigning Motocross of Nations champion and current 450 Class points leader Ryan Dungey will return as the team captain in the MX1 class aboard his Rockstar/Makita Suzuki while GEICO Powersports Honda's Trey Canard (MX2) and Honda Red Bull Racing's Andrew Short (MX3) make their respective debuts at the world's biggest professional motocross event.

Team manager Roger DeCoster, who has won 16 MXoN titles as a rider and 20 as a team manager for the United States, and assistant team manager Mitch Payton selected the trio for the 62nd running of the event based on each rider's performance throughout the 2010 season up to this point. With a five-year winning streak in tact, Dungey, Canard and Short will look to make it six-in-a-row while competing on American soil at the same facility that has hosted a round of the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship since 2006.

"I believe this is one of the strongest teams the U.S. has ever fielded," said DeCoster. "Each of these riders have earned their spot on the team thanks to tremendous efforts thus far in the championship. With his win last year, Ryan (Dungey) will lead the team in MX1 while Canard and Short will serve as strong complements in MX2 and MX3."

Dungey made his 450cc motocross debut at the Motocross of Nations last season in his first selection to Team USA. He capped off the event with a win in the final moto, solidifying the United States' fifth straight win. This season, he's dominated the premier class of American motocross as a rookie, winning eight consecutive races to put himself in position to claim the world's most prestigious motocross title. He also won this season's event from Thunder Valley.

"It's always an honor to be a part of this team," said Dungey. "It was an amazing experience last year and I can't wait to be a part of it again. We have a great team with Andrew (Short) and Trey (Canard) and I think it'll give us a great chance to take the win again."

For Canard, the selection to Team USA is his first. So far in 2010, Canard has experienced a breakout season. Prior to this year, he had never won an overall event in the motocross discipline, but after capturing his first career victory last month, he's gone on to win four straight events. Now with three rounds remaining, he sits in position to claim the 250 Class title in the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship.

"Man this is just incredible," said Canard. "I was lucky enough to be a spectator at the 2007 Motocross of Nations from Budds Creek and I knew then that this is something I wanted to be a part of someday. Words can't express how proud I am to be a part of this team."

After eight years of professional motocross competition, the 2010 Motocross of Nations will serve as Short's first chance to compete for his country on a global stage. After finishing second in the 2009 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship 450 Class standings, he has been a staple at the front of the field again this year, boasting four podium finishes through nine rounds, each of them in the runner-up spot. Additionally, Short has a moto win to his credit and leads the 450 Class in holeshots with eight. As a Colorado native, Thunder Valley will serve as a home race for the current championship runner-up, making it the perfect site to make his Team USA debut.

"I'm really excited to race in Colorado," said Short. "We have a great team here with myself, Ryan (Dungey) and Trey (Canard) and I think we have a great chance at going out there and winning. I've always dreamed of being a part of Team USA and it's really special to be selected this season."

Thunder Valley Motocross Park, located in the city of Lakewood, just a short drive from downtown Denver, is the third U.S. venue to host a Motocross of Nations, joining Unadilla in 1987 and Budds Creek Motocross Park in 2007. The event commences on the weekend of September 25-26, just two weeks following the conclusion of the 2010 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship.

After 6 of 12 rounds, Rockstar/Makita Suzuki’s Ryan Dungey has established himself as the man to beat in the Rockstar Energy/Rockwell Time Fast Lap Competition. The Fast Lap Competition, new for 2010, awards one point to the rider who posts the fastest lap time in the second 450 moto at each round of the 2010 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Nationals. After grabbing the Fast Lap bonus points at Budds Creek, Thunder Valley, and RedBud, Dungey heads into Milleville this weekend with 3 -point lead over Andrew Short and Mike Alessi, both of whom have 1 point each.

Red Bud Race Report...Honda

Torrance, CA: The Honda Red Riders took on round six of the 2010 AMA Motocross Championship and Women’s Motocross Championship at RedBud in Buchanan, MI on Saturday, July 3, and Honda Red Bull Racing’s Andrew Short made a solid run up front aboard his CRF450R while teammate Ashley Fiolek clinched her first overall victory of the season aboard her CRF250R. Another Honda racer to win at RedBud was GIECO Powersports Honda’s Trey Canard, who scored his first-ever 250cc motocross race win and overall victory.

Two-time women’s champion Fiolek had her best showing of the season, going 1-1 in the women’s competition to clinch her first overall victory this season. Grabbing the holeshot in both motos, Fiolek dominated both races to take the overall win. Fellow Honda racer Troy Lee Designs’ Tara Gieger joined Fiolek on the podium going 3-3 to end the round third overall.

Short got a good start in the first 450cc moto and was among the lead group from the get-go. Rounding the opening lap in the number two spot, Short put in a solid performance to eventually take the checkers in third place. In moto two he again fired off to a fine start and went on to finish fifth, placing fourth overall for the round.

In other 450-class action, Troy Lee Designs Honda’s Ben Townley looked on target to record his first race win of the season, leading every lap in the opening moto until he fell in the closing stages on the final lap, which relegated him to fourth. Townley rebounded in moto two to grab third place and close out the round third overall. Brett Metcalfe’s 5-4 finish aboard his GEICO Powersports Honda CRF450R put him fifth overall and privateer Honda racer Kyle Regal finished seventh overall with 7-7 moto finishes.

GEICO Powersports Honda’s Trey Canard went 4-1 in the 250cc competition to successfully score his first-ever overall Lites motocross win on his CRF250R. Getting a lackluster start in moto one where he rounded the opening lap in 10th position, Canard worked his way through the pack, picking off riders one by one to eventually take the checkers in fourth place. Getting a better start in moto two and running among the lead pack, he set a blistering pace before moving into the lead on lap 11 where he remained until the race’s end. Teammates Justin Barcia and Blake Wharton were never far away with Barcia going 5-3 to finish in fourth overall and Wharton going 6-4 to get fifth overall. Eli Tomac finished 10th overall, going 12-9 aboard his GEICO Powersports Honda CRF250R.

Lakewood Race Report...Fly Racing

AMA Outdoor Motocross Series, Round 5 – Lakewood, Colorado

The AMA Lucas Oil Motocross made stop number five this past weekend at Thunder Valley MX in Lakewood, Colorado for another great round of racing. The day started out strong with Andrew Short setting the second fastest qualifying time in the 450 practice. In the 250 class, it was Martin Davalos also setting the second fastest time during practice, giving both Fly riders great gate picks to start the motos.

450 Class Highlights

Fly riders Andrew Short, Weston Peick, Ben Evans, Kyle Regal, Josh Clark, and Terren O’Dell all qualified for Motos via timed practice, with Short setting the second fastest time. In Moto one, it was Honda Red Bull Racing’s Andrew Short with the holeshot and early lead. Short began to pull a slight lead until a lap five crash moved him outside the top ten, forcing him to charge his way back to an 8th place finish. Fellow Fly rider Kyle Regal was close behind, finishing 9th. Rounding out the top twenty for Fly racing was Weston Peick in 20th.

In Moto two it was once again Andrew Short with another holeshot setting him up for another great finish with a 3rd place, which was good enough for fifth overall on the day. Merge Racing/American Honda backed rider Kyle Regal also had a good second Moto finishing 6th, with Team Rock River Powersports rider Weston Peick riding to a 16th place finish.

In the Lites class it was Fly riders Max Anstie, Broc Tickle, Martin Davalos, Alex Martin, Kyle Gills, along with privateers Hunter Clements, Preston Mull, Michael Akaydin, Johnny Moore, Bobby Fitch and Donald Vawser, all making it out of timed qualifying to put themselves into motos for the day.

In Moto one it was DNA Shred Stix/Star Racing rider Broc Tickle Leading the way finishing 5th followed by fellow DNA rider Martin Davalos in 8th. Fellow Fly rider Alex Martin finished just outside the top ten with an 11th followed by Max Anstie in 12th.

In Moto two it was more of the same and leading the way was Star Racing Yamaha/DNA Shred Stix backed riders Broc Tickle (finishing 6th) and Martin Davalos in 8th, followed closely by Alex Martin and Max Anstie finishing 16th and 19th.

Torrance, CA: The Honda Red Riders took on round four of the 2010 AMA Motocross Championship at Budds Creek in Mechanicsville, MD, on Saturday, June 19, and Honda Red Bull Racing's Andrew Short led the charge with his first moto win of the season on his CRF450R.

Short rode a faultless opening moto to clinch his first win in 2010, nabbing the holeshot and leading every lap of the race. Fast out of the start gate, Short extended a comfortable lead out front en route to victory. In moto two, Short jumped to an early lead but a few errors during the race saw him fall back and finish in fifth. Short's solid 1-5 results put him 2nd overall-equaling his best overall result this season. His Honda Red Bull teammate Davi Millsaps got a mid-pack start in moto one and was holding down eighth spot when he crashed hard, requiring trackside medical attention and a trip to the hospital. Examination ascertained that Millsaps suffered multiple injuries so he was kept at the hospital for observation. It is anticipated that he will be released shortly to return home, where he will be under the care of his regular physician.

"It's awesome to win again," said Short. "The last time I won a moto was at the Colorado motocross race in 2007 so this has been a long time coming. I owe the Honda Red Bull Racing team and our sponsors a huge shout out for all the support they've given me over the years. Everyone on the team puts in a huge effort each and every week and I'm just really happy I could repay them with a win. I got great starts in both motos, which I'm pumped about. In moto two I just didn't ride as smooth as I did in the first moto but I'm happy to get second overall for the round. I can't wait to be on home soil next week and race in front of my Colorado home crowd. I'm feeling really motivated so it should be a lot of fun."

In more 450-class action, GEICO Powersports Honda's Brett Metcalfe ran among the top contenders in both motos before going 6-6 and finishing the round sixth overall. Troy Lee Designs Honda's Ben Townley went 14-3 to finish eighth overall.

In the 250 class, Justin Barcia showed he had the skills and speed to battle up front aboard his GEICO Powersports Honda CRF250R, going 3-2 and finishing the round second overall. Troy Lee Designs Honda'sWil Hahn rode a solid first moto and was fastest out of the start gate in moto two to go 5-4 for fifth overall. GEICO Powersports Honda's Trey Canard went 7-8 for seventh overall and teammate BlakeWharton finished in ninth (11-9). Eli Tomac got the moto one holeshot aboard his GEICO Powersports Honda CRF250R but managed only a mid-pack start in the second moto and finished 10th overall (10-13).

Fly Racing’s Short Claims 450 Moto Win
AMA Outdoor Motocross Series, Round 4 – Mechanicsville, Maryland
The AMA Lucas Oil Motocross made stop number four this past weekend at Budd’s Creek MX in Mechanicsville, Maryland and it was a great weekend of racing for Fly Racing. The weather and track conditions were near perfect and Fly Racing riders had a great weekend of finishes. The highlight of the weekend though had to be Fly team rider Andrew Short’s stunning first moto victory. Shorty pulled the holeshot and checked out for his first moto win of the year!

450 Class Highlights
Fly Riders Andrew Short, Weston Peick, Ben Evans, Kyle Regal, Josh Clark, and Terren O’Dell all qualifying for Motos. In Moto one it was Honda Red Bull Racing’s Andrew Short with the holeshot and riding his way to his first Moto win of the year! Fly riders Kyle Regal and Ben Evans were close behind, finishing 11th and 15th respectively. Weston Peick and Josh Clark rounded out the top 20 in Moto one finishing 17th and 20th.

In Moto two it was more of the same with Andrew Short with another holeshot setting him up for another great finish with a 5th. Merge Racing/American Honda backed rider Kyle Regal also has a good second Moto finishing 15th with fellow Fly rider and Team Ti-Lube/Brown Racing backed rider Ben Evans close behind in 16th. Weston Peick rounded out the top twenty for Fly racing with a 19th place finish in Moto two.
