Cooper Webb is the AMA Youth Motocrosser of the Year

Torrance, CA: American Honda Motor Company’s Powersports Division announced today that Cooper Webb, a 14-year-old Honda rider, has been awarded the AMA Youth Motocrosser of the Year Award. Once a year, this honor is granted to the top youth competitor who not only demonstrates an ability to perform on the track, but is also judged to be a role model among his young peers. Cooper has repeatedly proven that he meets all these requirements and so he was selected to receive this prestigious award.

Keith Dowdle, Assistant Manager HRCA, said, "Cooper has been a part of the American Honda/Red Bull JAMS program for four years and during that time he has proven to be a talent both on and off the track. Cooper has appeared in several American Honda advertisements and in a number of our dealer convention videos. He is well spoken and does a great job of promoting our CRF150R product line. Manufacturers want riders who are not just fast on the track but can also communicate well regarding the product line, and Cooper is great in both roles. We are very proud of him and we are thrilled that the AMA has recognized him for his skills on and off the track."

Hailing from Newport, N.C., Webb has been racing a Honda Red Bull Racing CRF150R in 2010, and has earned more than 40 national championship plus other accolades since he began his racing career 10 years ago.

Ashley Fiolek Wins Back-To-Back X Games Gold

Torrance, CA: American Honda congratulates Honda Red Bull Racing’s Ashley Fiolek on winning the 2010 X Games Women’s Moto X Super X gold medal at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on Thursday, July 29. Fiolek topped the competition just as she did last year to win back-to-back X Games gold.

Millions of X Games viewers worldwide watched Fiolek dominate the race by getting a good jump out of the start gate and racing her CRF250R into the number one spot on the opening lap. Setting the pace out front, Fiolek led every lap en route to clinching her second consecutive X Games gold. In addition, Troy Lee Designs Honda’s Tara Gieger took the silver medal making it a one-two finish for Honda at the hugely popular annual action sports event.

Red Bud Race Report...Honda

Torrance, CA: The Honda Red Riders took on round six of the 2010 AMA Motocross Championship and Women’s Motocross Championship at RedBud in Buchanan, MI on Saturday, July 3, and Honda Red Bull Racing’s Andrew Short made a solid run up front aboard his CRF450R while teammate Ashley Fiolek clinched her first overall victory of the season aboard her CRF250R. Another Honda racer to win at RedBud was GIECO Powersports Honda’s Trey Canard, who scored his first-ever 250cc motocross race win and overall victory.

Two-time women’s champion Fiolek had her best showing of the season, going 1-1 in the women’s competition to clinch her first overall victory this season. Grabbing the holeshot in both motos, Fiolek dominated both races to take the overall win. Fellow Honda racer Troy Lee Designs’ Tara Gieger joined Fiolek on the podium going 3-3 to end the round third overall.

Short got a good start in the first 450cc moto and was among the lead group from the get-go. Rounding the opening lap in the number two spot, Short put in a solid performance to eventually take the checkers in third place. In moto two he again fired off to a fine start and went on to finish fifth, placing fourth overall for the round.

In other 450-class action, Troy Lee Designs Honda’s Ben Townley looked on target to record his first race win of the season, leading every lap in the opening moto until he fell in the closing stages on the final lap, which relegated him to fourth. Townley rebounded in moto two to grab third place and close out the round third overall. Brett Metcalfe’s 5-4 finish aboard his GEICO Powersports Honda CRF450R put him fifth overall and privateer Honda racer Kyle Regal finished seventh overall with 7-7 moto finishes.

GEICO Powersports Honda’s Trey Canard went 4-1 in the 250cc competition to successfully score his first-ever overall Lites motocross win on his CRF250R. Getting a lackluster start in moto one where he rounded the opening lap in 10th position, Canard worked his way through the pack, picking off riders one by one to eventually take the checkers in fourth place. Getting a better start in moto two and running among the lead pack, he set a blistering pace before moving into the lead on lap 11 where he remained until the race’s end. Teammates Justin Barcia and Blake Wharton were never far away with Barcia going 5-3 to finish in fourth overall and Wharton going 6-4 to get fifth overall. Eli Tomac finished 10th overall, going 12-9 aboard his GEICO Powersports Honda CRF250R.

Torrance, CA: The Honda Red Riders took on round four of the 2010 AMA Motocross Championship at Budds Creek in Mechanicsville, MD, on Saturday, June 19, and Honda Red Bull Racing's Andrew Short led the charge with his first moto win of the season on his CRF450R.

Short rode a faultless opening moto to clinch his first win in 2010, nabbing the holeshot and leading every lap of the race. Fast out of the start gate, Short extended a comfortable lead out front en route to victory. In moto two, Short jumped to an early lead but a few errors during the race saw him fall back and finish in fifth. Short's solid 1-5 results put him 2nd overall-equaling his best overall result this season. His Honda Red Bull teammate Davi Millsaps got a mid-pack start in moto one and was holding down eighth spot when he crashed hard, requiring trackside medical attention and a trip to the hospital. Examination ascertained that Millsaps suffered multiple injuries so he was kept at the hospital for observation. It is anticipated that he will be released shortly to return home, where he will be under the care of his regular physician.

"It's awesome to win again," said Short. "The last time I won a moto was at the Colorado motocross race in 2007 so this has been a long time coming. I owe the Honda Red Bull Racing team and our sponsors a huge shout out for all the support they've given me over the years. Everyone on the team puts in a huge effort each and every week and I'm just really happy I could repay them with a win. I got great starts in both motos, which I'm pumped about. In moto two I just didn't ride as smooth as I did in the first moto but I'm happy to get second overall for the round. I can't wait to be on home soil next week and race in front of my Colorado home crowd. I'm feeling really motivated so it should be a lot of fun."

In more 450-class action, GEICO Powersports Honda's Brett Metcalfe ran among the top contenders in both motos before going 6-6 and finishing the round sixth overall. Troy Lee Designs Honda's Ben Townley went 14-3 to finish eighth overall.

In the 250 class, Justin Barcia showed he had the skills and speed to battle up front aboard his GEICO Powersports Honda CRF250R, going 3-2 and finishing the round second overall. Troy Lee Designs Honda'sWil Hahn rode a solid first moto and was fastest out of the start gate in moto two to go 5-4 for fifth overall. GEICO Powersports Honda's Trey Canard went 7-8 for seventh overall and teammate BlakeWharton finished in ninth (11-9). Eli Tomac got the moto one holeshot aboard his GEICO Powersports Honda CRF250R but managed only a mid-pack start in the second moto and finished 10th overall (10-13).

2010 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship Kicks Off This Weekend

MORGANTOWN, W.V. (May 19, 2010) - The long-awaited 2010 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship is quickly descending on the dirt-bike racing world. Just two weeks following the conclusion of an exciting season of AMA Supercross competition, the world's best riders return to the track for their annual summer-long test of endurance and physical challenges. This Saturday, May 22, the Rockstar Energy Hangtown Classic makes its return as the season-opening round of the 12-race championship.

450 Class

Monster Energy Kawasaki?Defending premier 450 Class champion Chad Reed enters the 2010 season with a new team, Monster Energy Kawasaki, the new role of father, and a fresh outlook on the rest of the year after sitting out the majority of the supercross season due to injury. One year ago, the Aussie was undoubtedly the busiest rider in the entire industry, competing throughout the majority of the entire 2009 calendar year. While his injury during supercross was a disappointment for Reed, his team and the fans, it served as a blessing in disguise and now the most successful international competitor in the sport's history will attack the outdoors unlike ever before in a quest to defend his crown. Veteran Nick Wey will join Reed this season under the Kawasaki tent, taking the vacant spot left by Ryan Villopoto. For Wey, this opportunity is the chance of a lifetime and he's excited about the upcoming season.

"My supercross season didn't go as planned," said Reed. "But now I'm healthy and focused on defending this title. We had some good tests this past month and I'm ready to get back on the top step of the podium."

"Being a part of the Monster Energy Kawasaki team is great," said Wey. "Ryan is a good friend of mine and this isn't how I wanted to get this ride, but I'm going to go out there and ride as best as I can. I think we have the speed to be competitive this year."

Rockstar/Makita Suzuki?Over at Reed's former team, Rockstar/Makita Suzuki, the smiles continue from where they left off in 2009. After sweeping both the 450 and 250 class championships one year ago, the Roger DeCoster-led team kept up the momentum by capturing the 2010 AMA Supercross title with its newest rider Ryan Dungey. The Minnesota native's move into the premier division of the sport has been smoother than many anticipated and he appears to be naturally suited for the more powerful 450cc machine. In his first ever competition aboard the big bike outdoors, Dungey led Team USA to a Motocross of Nations victory this past October, grabbing the MX1 individual overall title in the process. He hopes that success translates over to this summer and after claiming the 250 Class title last season, in addition to being just the second rookie in history to grab the premier supercross championship, there is little reason to think he doesn't have a chance to become the first rookie in history to sweep the year's championships.

"I've been doing a lot of testing for outdoors, and I feel good," said Dungey. "The team has been working really hard to get the bike dialed in, and I'm excited to get out there and race. It's a whole new series and injured riders are returning, and I'm really looking forward to racing everyone."

Also making his long-awaited debut for the Rockstar/Makita Suzuki team is Australian rookie Matt Moss. An impressive Australasian Supercross Lites championship resulted in a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the young rider in America, but injuries have left him on the outside looking in so far. He will line up on the gate this Saturday for his U.S. debut and could be one of the many surprises this summer.

Honda Red Bull Racing?Honda Red Bull Racing will attack the 450 Class championship with a two-rider lineup. Perennial front-runner Andrew Short is still in search of that elusive first career victory, but after an injury allowed the busiest rider in the sport a chance at some time away from competition during supercross, he enters the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship fresh and rejuvenated and hungrier than ever to not only capture that inaugural win, but make a run towards the championship as well.

"I really want to take my outdoor racing to the next level and win in 2010," said Short. "I'm known for always being right there in the mix, vying for the top spot, but I'm determined to step it up and see Honda Red Bull Racing on the top step of the podium more often this year."

An up and down supercross season left Davi Millsaps yearning for more. Despite capturing a victory this winter, Millsaps couldn't find the consistency he was hoping for, but still was able to finish on the championship podium in third by season's end. While motocross and Millsaps haven't had the best relationship in past years, the Georgia native looks at the 2010 season as his opportunity to break through and become the regular challenger many hope he can be.

"I'm feeling really good heading into the outdoor series this weekend at Hangtown," said Millsaps. "There's not much of a break between the supercross series and start of the motocross championship, but I'm confident I can do well this season. Last year I struggled with injuries but still managed to grab a win on my Honda Red Bull Racing CRF450R."

Jagermeister KTM?Mike Alessi's anticipated return to Jagermeister KTM this season will be one of the most followed storylines in 2010. The two-time winner from 2009 will debut the innovative 350cc machine at Hangtown this Saturday and many are curious as to how the bike will stand up against the larger 450cc bikes. After emerging as one of the fastest riders in the series over the last two seasons, there is no doubt Alessi has the talent to make the bike succeed. However, after season-ending injuries have put him on the sidelines early over the last couple years, he is determined to stay healthy and claim a championship he feels could be his to lose.

"We have the bike pretty much dialed in and are very excited about racing it for the first time in the U.S.," said Alessi. "The 350 SX-F has been working really well for me in practice and I can't wait to show everyone how it performs at the track."

Muscle Milk/Toyota/JGR?Muscle Milk/Toyota/Joe Gibbs Racing enter the outdoor nationals with two of the youngest and most talented riders in the field. Josh Grant was able to break through with his first career victory last season, but suffered a year-ending injury as the championship headed to the home stretch. After sitting out the entire supercross series, he is back and better than ever and looks to add to the championship mix. For teammate Justin Brayton, 2009 ended on a high note when he claimed his first career moto win. His transition to JGR has been smooth and he has more confidence than ever coming into the nationals.

250 Class

Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki?The 250 Class will welcome a new champion for the 2010 season as reigning champion Dungey has moved on into the premier class. Headlining the list of championship favorites are a pair of Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki riders in Christophe Pourcel and Jake Weimer. Pourcel was the antagonist to Dungey's championship run last season and turned a lot of heads in his first full season on American soil. Add to the fact that the Frenchman is fresh off a AMA Supercross Lites Eastern Regional title and you have a target for all riders to go for this summer. For Weimer, 2009 was a breakout year in which he captured his first three motocross victories. He carried over the increased confidence to supercross where he was almost flawless en route to a Western Regional title and Las Vegas Shootout win.

"Last year I won some races and this year my goal is the title," said Weimer. "There are a lot of good riders out there and even the competition under our tent is going to be tough. I'm just going to go out and relax and try and get as many points as I can each moto."

In addition to Pourcel and Weimer, Tyla Rattray looks to continue his adjustment to American motocross. The former MX2 World Champion showed he has what it takes to run at the front last season, but he took time to adjust to the different tracks and different format of the nationals. With the experience in tow, he feels ready to take his riding to the next level. After a stellar close to his amateur career in 2009, reigning Horizon Award winner Dean Wilson makes his professional debut outdoors. The Scottish-born Canadian was fun to watch during supercross and gained considerable experience at the front of the pack. Now he transitions to an environment he is much more comfortable with and could turn some heads.

Rockstar/Makita Suzuki?After winning the title last season, Rockstar/Makita Suzuki returns with a new face to continue the tradition. After spending some time at the rival Pro Circuit stable, Austin Stroupe has done his best to take advantage of a golden opportunity at Suzuki. The program is a proven winner and Stroupe has shown stellar speed on the bike. After sitting out the final rounds of supercross with injury, he is 100% and ready to reclaim the magic that brought him his first career motocross victory in 2008 and keep the number one plate at Suzuki.

"Hopefully we can start off in motocross where we left off in supercross," said Team Manager Roger DeCoster. "If Ryan can be consistent as he was in supercross and can get good starts and be aggressive enough on the track, we'll have a good outdoors season. It will be good to get out there and see how Ryan does, and also Matt since we haven't gotten to watch him in a race in the U.S. yet. And hopefully Stroupe will come back as strong as he was in the supercross series, because he was very consistent and getting good finishes."

GEICO Powersports Honda?Like last year, the GEICO Powersports Honda team is loaded with young talent. While veteran Brett Metcalfe moves on to the 450 Class, a fast foursome of riders are prepared to attack the track this summer. Trey Canard leads the way as the most experienced rider on the team. He was a regular at the front of the field last season before bowing out with an injury and many feel it is only a matter of time before he breaks through. Justin Barcia was the surprise of the outdoor nationals in 2009, grabbing an impressive victory and Rookie of the Year honors along the way. So far he has lived up to expectation and is primed to take the next step to championship contender. Blake Wharton continues to develop at the pro level. The Texas native is undeniably quick, but he has had trouble finding the consistency needed to be there each and every week. With a full year under his belt, he should be ready to move forward. The newest member of the squad is amateur sensation Eli Tomac. The GEICO Powersports team has groomed Tomac to be its next big star and now the time has come for him to prove what he's capable of. In a story that plays out strikingly similar to Barcia's, it will be intriguing to see how he performs.

"Motocross racing is a very different beast compared to supercross racing," said Canard. "Motocross is all about endurance and stamina. It's a long season of back-to-back racing so you need to be consistent and stay healthy if you want to be up there in points going for the title. The GEICO Powersports Honda team does an awesome job preparing my race bike and I'm confident we'll have a great motocross season."

"I love racing outdoors so I'm ready to get this season started," said Barcia. "For the first time since turning pro last year, I will know the tracks I'm racing on. It's been a year of going to new places each and very week so being familiar with the tracks is definitely a big help. I finished on the podium nine times last year and won at Southwick, which was great for my rookie season. My goal for this season is to keep winning."

"I spent the last week in California testing with the team and I'm feeling on top of the world going into Hangtown this weekend," said Wharton. "My goal this season is to be in the top three every weekend, ultimately winning races. I want to improve on my eighth overall in the championship last year. With Tomac joining Barcia, Canard and I on the GEICO Powersports Honda team in the 250 class, it's like we're back racing in the amateur days only the competition is a lot tougher!"

"I'm really excited to make my professional debut with the GEICO Powersports Honda team at Hangtown this weekend," said Tomac. "I've worked really hard and tested with the team a lot in the lead-up to the first race. I've had a lot of success riding the CRF250R in the amateur ranks, so it definitely helps my confidence to ride the bike I know I can win on. I've grown up around and at times raced against some of my teammates in the amateur ranks -Justin Barcia, Blake Wharton and Trey Canard-so it's good to be on a team with familiar faces."

FMF/KTM?Team FMF/KTM rider Tommy Searle also performed well during his first season on American soil. The British rider was a podium finisher on a few occasions and appeared to get more comfortable as the season moved forward. Like his international counterparts, the familiarity he has with the tracks will play into his favor this season and will surely lead to a regular appearance at the front of the field.

"I have been working really hard after my injury at the beginning of the supercross series," said Searle. "My goal is to finish on the podium at each race and I feel I am ready to do so at Hangtown."

DNA Shred Stix/Star Yamaha?The DNA Shred Sitx/Star Yamaha team brings four riders into the mix for 2010 - Nico Izzi, Martin Davalos, Broc Tickle and Max Anstie. For Izzi, Davalos and Tickle, their experience will be key to running up front on a consistent basis. Each rider has taken their spots in the lead pack on several occasions and will look to use that to their advantage throughout the season. Tickle's first career professional victory in supercross is a surefire confidence booster and he will look to carry the momentum into the nationals. For Anstie, his rookie season was a mixed bag. He showed signs of speed, but didn't possess the all important consistency. As one of the youngest riders in the field, his results are impressive and he hopes to turn some heads throughout the 12 rounds.

(April 7, 2010) - With the start of the 2010 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship season just over six weeks away, MX Sports Pro Racing announces further information surrounding the season opening event, the Rockstar Energy Hangtown Motocross Classic. Festivities will commence on May 20 with a special event and press conference on the steps of the California State Capitol Building in Sacramento.

Celebrating Hangtown's 42nd year of hosting a motocross national and its return to the season-opening round of the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship, the Dirt Diggers North Motorcycle Club will bring the excitement of the world's most prestigious motocross series to the state capital of California. The massive, awe-inspiring race rigs of American Motocross' most prominent teams will line L Street and create a surreal setting in the heart of the city. Additionally, the sport's biggest stars, including defending champion Chad Reed, Jagermeister KTM's Mike Alessi, Rockstar/Makita Suzuki's Ryan Dungey, Muscle Milk/Toyota/JGR's Josh Grant, Honda Red Bull Racing's Andrew Short and Monster Energy Kawasaki's Ryan Villopoto will be on hand to speak to the media and interact with the fans in attendance as they prepare for a new season of the best outdoor racing on the planet.

The Rockstar Energy Hangtown Motocross Classic, which will take place on Saturday, May 22, has always been a gem of the outdoor nationals and the AMA Pro Motocross schedule, producing great racing and featuring some of the most dedicated and boisterous motocross fans in the world.

Honda Red Bull Racing's Ashley Fiolek To Appear On NBC's Last Call With Carson Daly

November 4, 2009 (Los Angeles, CA) - Ashley Fiolek, the 2009 X Games Women's Moto-X Gold Medalist and two-time AMA Women's Motocross Champion is the featured guest on Thursday night's edition of Last Call with Carson Daly on NBC. The show will air on NBC stations at 1:36 AM Eastern and Pacific and at 12:36 AM Mountain and Central time the night of November 5th (early morning on the 6th).

The show was taped on the back lot of NBC Studios in Burbank, CA in September when Ashley was in Los Angeles to be honored at City Hall by the L.A. City Council for her achievements and inspiration to the deaf community. The following day Ashley attended L.A.'s DEAFestival along with sponsors American Honda and T-Mobile.

Things Get Topsy-Turvy in Southwick

As the saying goes, there’s a reason why they run the races. Both classes proved that today at Southwick, round 11 of the 12-round Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship.

Coming into the event, Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Christophe Pourcel led the 250cc class by a full 13 points over Rockstar/Makita Suzuki’s Ryan Dungey, and Dungey needed help to win the title, because even if he won every moto from Southwick on to the end of the year, Pourcel would only have to finish second each time to secure the championship.

However, ask and ye shall receive. At Southwick, things went pear-shaped on Pourcel something fierce.

In moto one, Pourcel got a horrible start on the wet, sandy, rutted circuit and moved slowly forward until he sat fifth, while Dungey sat second. The points gap between the positions was six points, and if things stayed that way, the two would’ve gone into moto two only seven points apart.

However, with less than two laps to go, Pourcel’s bike gave up the ghost. He ended the moto with a DNF and no points scored. Dungey did all he could do in second, but he had to settle for the spot, as rookie sensation Justin Barcia, from the GEICO Powersports Honda team, took his first-ever moto victory after passing Dungey around the halfway point.

Barcia’s teammates Blake Wharton and Brett Metcalfe were third and fourth, and Pourcel’s teammates Austin Stroupe and Tyla Rattray were fifth and sixth.

Moto two was all Tyla Rattray out front, though. He got the holeshot and led every lap. However, Pourcel was the last one up in a first-turn pileup and rejoined the race in last while his title rival Dungey rounded lap one in 14th. Barcia was 17th. Metcalfe was second.

As Barcia chased Dungey through the pack, Pourcel worked his way forward, but his advance stalled at 10th place, and then he lost that spot to teammate Jake Weimer, who fell early in the race and took a long time starting his bike. Weimer eventually caught up to ninth.

Barcia worked on Dungey until they sat third and fourth at about the halfway point, and then Barcia took over the third position with two laps to go, solidifying his first-ever AMA National victory. Rattray won the moto over Metcalfe. Dungey was fourth, Ryan Sipes fifth, Tommy Searle sixth.

Pourcel finished well off the pace in 11th and leaves Southwick with a 17-point deficit to make up at the final next weekend at Steel City. It’s a daunting task, to be sure, but at the same time, Dungey made up 30 points in one day at Southwick, so anything’s possible.

In the 450cc class, it was all Rockstar/Makita Suzuki’s Chad Reed in moto one. He got the holeshot and led every lap, running away with a wire-to-wire victory over fellow Aussies Jake Moss (Monster Energy Kawasaki) and Michael Byrne. Rookie Kyle Regal was fourth in the first moto, in yet another strong ride, and local boy Robby Marshall was fifth, just in front of Valli Yamaha’s Matt Goerke, Honda Red Bull Racing’s Andrew Short, Jagermeister KTM’s Justin Brayton, Canidae/Motosport Kawasaki’s Tommy Hahn, local legend John Dowd and Floridian Ricky Renner (riding a 2007 Honda CRF450R practice bike).

In the second moto, Short got the holeshot but was quickly passed by Reed, then by Goerke for second, then by Dowd for third, Byrne for fourth, Hahn and Tedesco for fifth and sixth, etc. Reed led until just after the finish line on lap 9 of 16, when he cross-rutted and went down hard on the downside of the finish-line jump, handing the lead to Goerke.

Goerke led the rest of the race and, in his third race as a replacement rider at Team Yamaha, won his first-ever AMA National overall. He had never been on the podium at a national previous to this one.

Byrne finished second overall with a 3-3 and Dowd was a very popular third with a 10-2.

However, the championship was decided last week, so even if Reed sits out the finale as he recovers from his bruises and bumps, the championship is over.

Moto-X 338 Motocross National Team Previews and Series Statistics

MORGANTOWN, W.V. (August 27, 2009) - Last weekend at Budds Creek MX Park in Mechanicsville, Md., Rockstar/Makita/Suzuki's Chad Reed stood atop the podium for the fifth time this season and was able to add the number one plate to his resume after clinching the 2009 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship 450 Class title. It is the first outdoor championship for the Australian rider and the third AMA title of his career. As the battle for second heats up between Honda Red Bull teammates Andrew Short and Ivan Tedesco, the focus shifts this weekend to the tight 250 Class title hunt.
During the Budds Creek race, Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki's Christophe Pourcel extended his small advantage over Rockstar/Makita/Suzuki's Ryan Dungey to 13 points with two rounds remaining. The advantage puts Pourcel in a comfortable position for the final four motos in which he needs to finish at least second in order to guarantee the championship no matter what Dungey does. While experience will play into Dungey's hand, Pourcel has not appeared to suffer from unfamiliarity, landing on the overall podium at all 10 rounds this season. The duo will surely engage in a fight to the finish, providing stellar on-track action for the fans.
This weekend, professional Motocross makes its only stop in New England, home of some of the most dedicated fans in the country. Historic Moto-X 338, in Southwick, Mass., serves as host of the Moto-X 338 Motocross National and will challenge riders with the only sand track on the schedule. As the site of many memorable battles throughout the years, Moto-X 338 always provides some great racing. Same-day coverage of the race will feature each class for the first time in 2009. SPEED will present the 250 Class beginning at 9 p.m. ET immediately followed by the 450 Class at 10 p.m.


450 Class
Rockstar/Makita/Suzuki
With the championship in his hands, Reed can simply focus on winning from here on out. He has repeatedly stated how much he has enjoyed 2009 and now that the pressure is off, its time for the Aussie to have a little more fun and perhaps let it hang out. At his last appearance in Southwick back in 2006, he finished runner-up behind Ricky Carmichael and hopes to take the next step this weekend. His teammate Michael Byrne kept his solid season going last Saturday with a sixth overall. Last year in Massachusetts, he did not perform as well as he had hoped, finishing eighth overall. With the momentum he has built this season, he is confident that result will improve.
"I'm so happy to have gotten the championship wrapped up last weekend," stated Reed. "The Rockstar/Makita/Suzuki team was really patient with me while I tried to get my health issues under control this year, and they worked really hard to give me a bike I felt comfortable on. This is what that hard work is all about. I wanted to race AMA Motocross again this year because I wanted to support the series and have fun, and that's what I've been able to do. I'm looking forward to Southwick this weekend because now that the championship is settled, we can just go out and race and have a good time."
"Southwick has been somewhat up and down for me and hopefully this will be an up year," said Byrne. "I've been in Florida all week practicing in the sand so I can get a feel for it. I think the Rockstar/Makita/Suzuki RM-Z450 will be better this year in the sandy conditions because the team has been working hard on that. Hopefully, I can get some good starts and a good result."


Honda Red Bull Racing
Honda grabbed two of the three podium positions last weekend and added another name to the moto winner list with Davi Millsaps. The Georgia native held off a hard charging Reed in the first moto to take the win and backed it up with a sixth place finish in moto two to give him a career-best second overall. Since returning from injury, he has shown considerable speed, but has yet to put together a pair of equally strong motos. For Ivan Tedesco, Budds Creek was about gaining ground on his second place teammate Andrew Short, which he did. A third overall gave Tedesco a return to the podium and just an eight point deficit to his teammate. Short didn't appear to find his rhythm throughout the last round, posting seventh and 10th place finishes for eighth overall. However, he finished fourth at Moto-X 338 one year ago and could be looking at a nice rebound on Saturday.


JGRMX/Toyota/Yamaha
As quickly as the excitement in the Joe Gibbs pit rose with the return of Josh Grant at Budds Creek, it diminished equally as fast when Grant decided to sit out the rest of the season after a rough first moto. Despite the unfortunate news, Cody Cooper gave with a strong overall performance. While his result of 13th overall did not reflect how well he rode, the New Zealander showed strength and returns to the site of his best career finish on Saturday. Last season, Cooper broke through as a privateer with second overall and is undoubtedly looking forward to coming back to Southwick this weekend.


Monster Energy Kawasaki
After an up and down season, Timmy Ferry was able to capture his best result of 2009 with seventh overall. After a ninth place result in moto one, he bettered his finish in moto two in eighth and received a much needed boost of confidence. Last year, he took third overall at Southwick to solidify his runner-up finish in the standings and hopes to break into the top five and maybe even steal a podium on Saturday. Kawasaki's newest rider Jake Moss showed the speed the team knew he had in the first moto. However, misfortune bit the Australian rider late in the first moto and put a damper on an otherwise solid debut. He rebounded for ninth in the final moto for 16th overall. Saturday will mark his inaugural appearance in the 450 Class at Southwick, where he 15th last season in the 250 Class.
"Southwick is a good track for me," said Ferry. "Because there is a lot of sand, it reminds me of my place in Florida. I do a lot of riding in the sand so I think I can get a good finish. I just need to get better starts."
"I think I can get a win in the last two races," explained Moss. "I just need to work on my fitness a little bit and ride within my limits. The Kawasaki is awesome and I know I can get some good finishes this weekend."


Jagermeister KTM
With his confidence running high going into the last round, Justin Brayton was disappointed with his 11th overall at Budds Creek after a pair of fourth place finishes at the previous two races. Despite the result, Brayton ran as strong as ever but suffered a setback in the first moto that hurt his chances for the day. The California rider bounced back in moto two for seventh and hopes to get back to top form this weekend.
"Each week I was steadily getting closer to the podium and then I just had some bad luck at Budds Creek and it pushed me outside of the top ten," stated Brayton. "I am focused and ready to get inside the top three this weekend. I have been training hard, riding as much as I can and feel confident I can place in the top three."


250 Class
Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki
While Pourcel is leading the way with his chase for a championship, Jake Weimer is putting together a breakout season and it hasn't gone unnoticed as shown by his selection to the Motocross of Nations team. The Idaho rider captured his third win of the season last weekend in arguably the strongest ride he has ever had outdoors. Despite coming up just short of the moto one win, Weimer kept his teammate in his sights and the determination carried over into moto two where he took the lead late in a torrential downpour. After sitting in 10th after four rounds, he now sits fourth in the standings, on the cusp of taking third. For Pourcel, a smart ride in the rain showed his championship mentality. Knowing the pressure is somewhat relieved, it could be more of the same from the Frenchman. However, never one to back down, if a win is in his grasp don't be surprised if he makes a charge. For Austin Stroupe and Tyla Rattray, each rider continues to get back into top form after lengthy injuries. Each rider finished in the top 10 last weekend with Stroupe in fifth and Rattray in 10th. Neither rider competed at Southwick last season so it will be interesting to see how they fare in the sand.
"Southwick should be a good race for me," said Pourcel. "I race well on sandy tracks so hopefully I can win both motos and build a bigger cushion heading to the final race. I'm going to just concentrate on getting the best finishes I can."
"I need to get two good starts again," explained Weimer, who claimed both holeshots last weekend. "The second half of the season has been really good and I want to keep getting good finishes and try and finish third in the standings."
"It is good to be back on track," stated Rattray. "I'm glad I got a race in before coming to Southwick. Since it is a sand track, I think I can do well, but it helps having raced last weekend. I really want to get back on the podium and I think I have a good chance this weekend."
"I'm making good progress," added Stroupe. "I just want to finish out the season as strong as I can and hopefully get a couple of podiums."


Rockstar/Makita/Suzuki
Even though he has lost ground in the title hunt, Dungey has been at the top of his game. Top-five starts have forced him to work his way through the field a bit more than his rival, but the speed is there and so is the confidence. His runner-up finish last season at Southwick was surrounded by wins in three of the final four events. If any rider has what it takes to make a late season run, its Dungey and with every point on the line from here on out, its go time for the Minnesota native.
"I'm excited about racing Southwick this weekend," boasted Dungey. "It's a good track - it's a lot of fun and I feel pretty comfortable in the sand. We only have two rounds left in the season and everything is coming down to the wire. I've been focusing on doing my regular program this week and will just try to ride my own race this weekend and gain some more points in the championship."


GEICO Powersports Honda
Australian Brett Metcalfe was on the verge of claiming an elusive first moto win at Budds Creek, but as the rain came down harder, the track became increasingly difficult and a slight bobble relegated him to second. However, Metcalfe's never surrender mentality has brought him to third place in the standings and it is only a matter of time before that win occurs. Last year at Moto-X 338, he put together one of his best performances of the season, finished second and third in the motos for third overall and will look to improve on that on Saturday. Rookie Justin Barcia quietly took home fourth overall last weekend with moto results of fourth and seventh. The Georgia rider has become consistent late in the season, honing in on his endurance and using his stellar speed when necessary. For third member Blake Wharton, the final month of 2009 has been rough. After scoring no points two rounds ago, he suffered the same fate last weekend and can't seem to rid himself of bad luck. He hopes his 10th place result in Southwick last season will mean that things turn around for the final two races.


Muscle Milk/MDK/KTM
In just his second race back, Ryan Sipes led the way for the KTM team at Budds Creek. He finished eighth overall and rode at the front of the pack for the majority of the muddy second moto. British rookie Tommy Searle was one of the many riders who suffered from misfortune in the final moto, posting finishes of seventh and 21st for 13th overall. In his first race back from shoulder surgery, Wil Hahn brought home 25th.
"I have always heard stories about Southwick and I am very excited to see what this sand track is all about," said Searle. "Every track on the circuit is new to me and it is a thrill each weekend the first time I pull onto the track."


WMX Class
The talented competitors of the Women's Motocross (WMX) Class of the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship return to action this weekend after a break that began at the conclusion of Washougal on July 25th. Honda Red Bull Racing's Ashley Fiolek holds a 49-point lead over rival Jessica Patterson and needs to gain just one point on Saturday in order to claim her second consecutive women's championship. Patterson grabbed the overall victory at Southwick last season and will look to maintain the momentum she captured at Washougal with her first overall victory of the season and keep her title hopes alive.


Round 10 Series Statistical Report
Chad Reed became the winningest rider in the series by taking his fifth overall victory last weekend.
Reed's 44th career AMA victory (sixth in AMA Motocross) led to his first career motocross title ever and made him the 11th rider in AMA history to earn championships in both Supercross and Motocross.
As a whole, Roger DeCoster's riders have won 55% of the overall victories across both classes (11 of 20).
Reed has won seven of the last nine motos.
Christophe Pourcel remains the only rider in the series to finish on the overall podium at all 10 races. His worst finish of the season came at Washougal with third overall. It is the only time he didn't finish in the top two.
With a 13-point lead, Pourcel will win the 250 Class title regardless of what Ryan Dungey does if he finishes at least second in each of the final four motos.
Massachusetts native and motocross legend John Dowd will compete at Southwick at 44 years of age, more than 20 years older than of the majority of the competitors in the series. Last season, he finished sixth overall.
The WMX Class makes its return to action for the first time since Washougal. Ashley Fiolek needs to gain just one point to capture her second straight women's title.
450 Class Stats:
The first race held at Southwick was June 6, 1976. Pierre Karsmakers would win on a Honda. It was his final AMA Motocross victory.
This will be the 31st time the gate will drop for a 450 Class race at Southwick.

Ricky Carmichael won eight consecutive races at Southwick from 2000 to 2007.
Southwick has hosted a Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship event for all but three years since 1976 (break from1983-1985).
Honda has swept Southwick in both the 450 and 250 classes four times, while Yamaha has done it twice. Kawasaki did it for the first time last season.

Same-Day Southwick MX Coverage on SPEED

As the season draws to a close, the demand for coverage of the 2009 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship has reached a pinnacle and SPEED has responded, presenting three hours of exclusive coverage this Saturday, August 29.

Ryan Dungey is racing for the series championship against racers like Christophe Pourcel and Jake Weimer.

Beginning at 8 p.m. ET, the super competitive 250 Class race from Budds Creek will kick-off an evening of the world's premier motocross racing. Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki's Christophe Pourcel and Rockstar/Makita/Suzuki's Ryan Dungey are in the midst of a major battle for the series championship, but a determined Jake Weimer had plans of his own.

Immediately following the Budds Creek 250 race at 9 p.m. ET, SPEED will present the first of two same-day coverage broadcasts from Saturday's Moto-X 338 Motocross National in Southwick, Mass. The 250 Class and its aforementioned title fight take center stage for the first time in 2009.

At 10 p.m. ET, newly-crowned 450 Class Champion Chad Reed looks for his sixth overall victory of the season and a continued dominance of the premier class aboard his Rockstar/Makita/Suzuki. However, Honda Red Bull Racing teammates Andrew Short and Ivan Tedesco are in the midst of a tight battle for the runner-up position in the standings and know a win would help solidify their efforts. Throw in Southwick legend John Dowd as a special guest competitor and the stage is set for a possible upset victory.

Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship Invades New England for Penultimate Round

MORGANTOWN, W.V. - This weekend, the top riders of the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship will head to New England for the historic Moto-X 338 Motocross National, which also serves as the penultimate round of the 12-race series.

With Rockstar/Makita/Suzuki's Chad Reed clinching his first 450 Class championship last weekend at Budds Creek, the focus of the series turns to the hotly-contested 250 Class battle for the title between current points leader Christophe Pourcel and Ryan Dungey. Additionally, the talented women of the WMX Class make their return to action for round seven of eight. Honda Red Bull Racing's Ashley Fiolek leads the way in search of her second straight championship.

Affectionately known as the "sandbox," Moto-X 338 has been a home to motocross events since 1973. The Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship made its first appearance at the facility three years later and ever since, Southwick has been a favorite amongst fans and riders alike. The track is unique when compared to other tracks that host the series as it is the only one that is comprised primarily of soft and loose sand, held under the cover of the New England scrub pine trees.

Last weekend at Budds Creek MX Park, the chase for the 450 Class title came to a dramatic conclusion as Reed, a two-time AMA Supercross champion, finished second in moto one to Honda Red Bull Racing's Davi Millsaps. In the second moto, Reed came out swinging and won under persistent rainfall, claiming the championship with two rounds remaining. Millsaps captured second overall while his teammate Ivan Tedesco finished third.

Joining the fray on Saturday is local Massachusetts legend John Dowd, who lives in nearby Ludlow. Dowd, a two-time Southwick winner, won back-to-back races in 1997 and 1998, grabbing wins in both the 250 and 450 Classes (formerly known as 125 and 250). At the ripe young age of 44, he also holds AMA records as the oldest rider to win an overall event, earn a moto victory, stand on the podium and claim an AMA Championship. The beloved New England rider finished sixth overall at this event one year ago and will look to improve on that performance by using his experience at the track to overcome his much younger opponents in addition to scoring AMA championship points, which will allow him to keep his national number of 16.

Pourcel, a Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki rider, leads the 250 Class by 13 points over Dungey, who rides for Rockstar/Makita/Suzuki. To date, Dungey has four overall victories to Pourcel's three, but with the advantage, the French rider has placed his rival in a virtual must win situation for the remaining four motos. Last weekend, Pourcel's teammate Jake Weimer landed his third overall win of the season despite treacherous conditions thanks to torrential rain. Playing it smart, Pourcel cruised to second overall as Dungey settled for third.

As the WMX Class returns for its first race in over a month, the championship chase is taking shape as Fiolek carries the momentum of five wins in six rounds. Rival Jessica Patterson brought a halt to Fiolek's dominance at the previous race in Washougal, but with just two events remaining it may be too late as the reigning women's champion holds a 49-point lead. However, a win at Moto-X 338 last season will play into Patterson's favor. In order to claim the 2009 crown, Fiolek needs to gain just one more point over the field on Saturday. However, Patterson along with current third place rider Sherri Cruse are eager to keep their hopes alive and will pull out all the stops as the gates drop. Additionally, local Southwick competitors look to use familiarity to their advantage and pull off the upset.

Last season, James Stewart captured his 11th consecutive overall win en route to a perfect 2008 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship season and his first-ever 450 Class championship. 250 Class champion Ryan Villopoto nailed his 20th and final class victory in bringing one of the most dominant 250 careers to an exciting conclusion.

This weekend, the Southwick staff is preparing for what is sure to be yet another memorable event by providing a trio fundraising opportunities supporting local hero Doug Henry, the Southwick Recreation Center and School Department, as well as American Legion 338. Additionally, the track will host an open practice for all riders on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The excitement kicks-off on Friday at 3 p.m. as gates open for the Monster Energy Fan Fest that will feature live music, autograph sessions, pro team truck tours and a pit bike national.
