Steel City Report: American Honda

Torrance CA: Honda Red Bull Racing’s Kevin Windham came out on top at round eleven of the AMA Motocross Championship at Steel City Raceway in Delmont, PA on Saturday, September 4, aboard his CRF450R. GEICO Powersports Honda’s Trey Canard made it a double victory for Honda by clinching the 250-class victory aboard his CRF250R.

 

Despite not competing in the premier 450 Motocross class for years, Windham showed that at 32 years of age he still has what it takes to win. In moto one the 16-year racing veteran battled for the lead with GEICO Powersports Honda’s Brett Metcalfe before taking control of the race and setting the stage for a Honda podium sweep. Windham came out on top, Metcalfe nabbed second and Troy Lee Design’s Ben Townley clinched third place aboard his CRF450R. In the second moto Windham moved into an early lead but relinquished a spot on lap four. The Honda racer held off a determined charge by Metcalfe once again to take the checkers in second place, which earned him the overall victory (1-2).

 

"This win is definitely up there with some of my greatest career moments and I’m stoked to have the opportunity to be out here racing," said Windham. "I’m learning to cherish each and every one of these moments with each passing year as I’m not getting any younger and you never know when the next opportunity will come again. The Honda Red Bull Racing team was awesome this weekend and I really had to work hard to keep Metcalfe honest in both motos."

 

The battle for second place in the championship got even hotter for Windham’s teammate Andrew Short, who came into Steel City with a three-point lead over Metcalfe in the series points standings. Short continued to rip off fast starts in both motos but his 4-5 moto results versus Metcalfe’s 2-3 tally saw the pair switch spots in the overall standings. Short’s hunt to regain second in the championship chase will be played out at the final round next weekend at Pala Raceway, CA.

 

Metcalfe’s 2-3 finishes at Steel City gave him second overall at the round. Despite suffering a broken nose during the first moto, Townley still finished third, but a first-turn pile-up in moto two took him out of the competition. Still his third place finish in moto one (plus a 37^th in moto two) gave him 10th overall.

 

In 250cc competition, Canard made a perfect sweep of both motos, pulling off a pair of flawless rides to score his fifth overall victory this season aboard his CRF250R. With just seven points separating Canard from the points leader with one round to go, his campaign toward winning his first-ever Motocross Championship will be decided at the final round next weekend. Teammate Eli Tomac had a good showing, going 4-5 aboard his CRF250R to finish just shy of the overall podium in fourth place. GEICO Powersports Honda’s Justin Barcia nabbed sixth (10-6) and Blake Wharton finished seventh (9-7) aboard his CRF250R while Wil Hahn got eighth (5-11) aboard his Troy Lee Designs Honda CRF250R. Rounding out the top ten, Honda privateer Darryn Durham went 8-10 to secure 10th overall.

 

In the Women’s Motocross Championship, Ashley Fiolek showed good speed from the get-go aboard her CRF250R, going 1-2 to take second overall for the round. In the opening moto, Fiolek grabbed the holeshot and went on to lead every lap of the race en route to taking victory. In moto two, she put in a solid chase for the lead that included a spectacular charge in the closing turns of the race. Unfortunately Fiolek went down with a turn to go but still managed to take the checkers in second spot to put her second overall. Tarah Gieger went 4-7 aboard her Troy Lee Designs Honda CRF250R for sixth overall.

Cooper Webb is the AMA Youth Motocrosser of the Year

Torrance, CA: American Honda Motor Company’s Powersports Division announced today that Cooper Webb, a 14-year-old Honda rider, has been awarded the AMA Youth Motocrosser of the Year Award. Once a year, this honor is granted to the top youth competitor who not only demonstrates an ability to perform on the track, but is also judged to be a role model among his young peers. Cooper has repeatedly proven that he meets all these requirements and so he was selected to receive this prestigious award.

Keith Dowdle, Assistant Manager HRCA, said, "Cooper has been a part of the American Honda/Red Bull JAMS program for four years and during that time he has proven to be a talent both on and off the track. Cooper has appeared in several American Honda advertisements and in a number of our dealer convention videos. He is well spoken and does a great job of promoting our CRF150R product line. Manufacturers want riders who are not just fast on the track but can also communicate well regarding the product line, and Cooper is great in both roles. We are very proud of him and we are thrilled that the AMA has recognized him for his skills on and off the track."

Hailing from Newport, N.C., Webb has been racing a Honda Red Bull Racing CRF150R in 2010, and has earned more than 40 national championship plus other accolades since he began his racing career 10 years ago.

Ashley Fiolek Wins Back-To-Back X Games Gold

Torrance, CA: American Honda congratulates Honda Red Bull Racing’s Ashley Fiolek on winning the 2010 X Games Women’s Moto X Super X gold medal at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on Thursday, July 29. Fiolek topped the competition just as she did last year to win back-to-back X Games gold.

Millions of X Games viewers worldwide watched Fiolek dominate the race by getting a good jump out of the start gate and racing her CRF250R into the number one spot on the opening lap. Setting the pace out front, Fiolek led every lap en route to clinching her second consecutive X Games gold. In addition, Troy Lee Designs Honda’s Tara Gieger took the silver medal making it a one-two finish for Honda at the hugely popular annual action sports event.

Torrance, CA: The Honda Red Riders took on round eight of the 2010 AMA Motocross Championship at Washougal Motocross Park in Washougal, WA on Saturday, July 24, and Honda Red Bull Racing’s Andrew Short and Kevin Windham impressed the crowd by running up front aboard their CRF450R race machines while GEICO Powersports Honda’s Trey Canard scored the trifecta in taking his third-straight overall 250-class victory aboard his CRF250R.

In moto one, Short pulled off the holeshot and led Honda’s charge through the first turn with teammate Kevin Windham and GEICO Powersports Honda’s Brett Metcalfe hot in tow. Short kept control out front until a series of small errors on lap five shifted the Honda racer into the number two spot where he remained until the race’s end. The start of the second moto mirrored the first with Short nabbing the holeshot—his eighth holeshot this season—and racing away to an early lead before surrendering a spot at the midway point. Short’s 2-2 results put him second overall for the round. Davi Millsaps’ replacement Windham was fast out of the start gate and was up front banging bars with the frontrunners early on in both motos until the veteran racer gave up a few spots to go 9-9 and end the round seventh overall.

"The Honda Red Bull Racing team really has my race bike dialed in for getting awesome starts," said Short. "The team did an amazing job and I had a lot of speed this weekend. I get great starts in almost every race and I’m quick to pull a good lead but I need to find that extra something within me to hang on out front until the very end. I absolutely love Washougal and this is one of those tracks that I really look forward to racing every year."

In other 450-class action, Metcalfe scored his third overall podium of the season by going 3-5 to finish the day third overall. Launching to a solid first-moto effort aboard his GEICO Powersports Honda CRF450R, Metcalfe later put in a heroic effort to rally back from 25th place in moto two to take the checkers in fifth spot, earning him a spot on the overall podium the hard way. Troy Lee Designs Honda’s Ben Townley was up front in the thick of the action in moto one when he crashed hard while negotiating the whoops. The CRF450R racer bruised his shoulder in the fall and was not able to participate in the second moto but is expected to be back racing at round nine in three weeks’ time.

In the 250 class, GEICO Powersports Honda’s Trey Canard absolutely dominated the competition, grabbing both holeshots on the day and leading every lap of racing to successfully clinch his third-straight overall victory. Aboard his CRF250R, the likeable Honda racer was unstoppable out front, setting a blistering pace and putting solid gaps between himself and his nearest competitors.

"I struggled at the start of the season to get everything figured out but things have really started to come together now," said Canard. "I’m in a really good place mentally, which I think has made all the difference, and my goal with four rounds to go is to stay out front and earn as many points as I can by winning motos."

Blake Wharton put in a solid performance aboard his GEICO Powersports Honda CRF250R going 5-4 to end the round fourth overall. Teammate Eli Tomac fared well going 7-9 to finish seventh overall while Justin Barcia finished in 16th position (32-10).

Red Bud Race Report...Honda

Torrance, CA: The Honda Red Riders took on round six of the 2010 AMA Motocross Championship and Women’s Motocross Championship at RedBud in Buchanan, MI on Saturday, July 3, and Honda Red Bull Racing’s Andrew Short made a solid run up front aboard his CRF450R while teammate Ashley Fiolek clinched her first overall victory of the season aboard her CRF250R. Another Honda racer to win at RedBud was GIECO Powersports Honda’s Trey Canard, who scored his first-ever 250cc motocross race win and overall victory.

Two-time women’s champion Fiolek had her best showing of the season, going 1-1 in the women’s competition to clinch her first overall victory this season. Grabbing the holeshot in both motos, Fiolek dominated both races to take the overall win. Fellow Honda racer Troy Lee Designs’ Tara Gieger joined Fiolek on the podium going 3-3 to end the round third overall.

Short got a good start in the first 450cc moto and was among the lead group from the get-go. Rounding the opening lap in the number two spot, Short put in a solid performance to eventually take the checkers in third place. In moto two he again fired off to a fine start and went on to finish fifth, placing fourth overall for the round.

In other 450-class action, Troy Lee Designs Honda’s Ben Townley looked on target to record his first race win of the season, leading every lap in the opening moto until he fell in the closing stages on the final lap, which relegated him to fourth. Townley rebounded in moto two to grab third place and close out the round third overall. Brett Metcalfe’s 5-4 finish aboard his GEICO Powersports Honda CRF450R put him fifth overall and privateer Honda racer Kyle Regal finished seventh overall with 7-7 moto finishes.

GEICO Powersports Honda’s Trey Canard went 4-1 in the 250cc competition to successfully score his first-ever overall Lites motocross win on his CRF250R. Getting a lackluster start in moto one where he rounded the opening lap in 10th position, Canard worked his way through the pack, picking off riders one by one to eventually take the checkers in fourth place. Getting a better start in moto two and running among the lead pack, he set a blistering pace before moving into the lead on lap 11 where he remained until the race’s end. Teammates Justin Barcia and Blake Wharton were never far away with Barcia going 5-3 to finish in fourth overall and Wharton going 6-4 to get fifth overall. Eli Tomac finished 10th overall, going 12-9 aboard his GEICO Powersports Honda CRF250R.

Lakewood Race Report...Troy Lee Designs Racing

AMA Motocross - Lakewood, CO

Round six of the Lucas Oil AMA Motocross Nationals marked a milestone for the TLD race team. Ben Townley finally got the monkey off his back by finishing second at the Thunder Valley facility. His result marked the first podium for the team in the premier class and Ben's first podium on a 450 as well. His teammate Cole Seely had the best finish of his young career with a ninth overall in the 250 class. Tarah Gieger struggled with bad starts and crashes and ended her podium streak with a seventh overall.

In the first 450 moto Ben nearly had the holeshot but settled into second around turn one. Ben lost his front end in a wet turn a couple laps later and would fall back to seventh. He put on a charge to get back to the front and tipped over again in a corner. This fall would really take the kiwi out of his rhythm and he could only get back to sixth at the finish. He was less than pleased with his moto one result. Moto two started with Ben in third place off the start. This time Ben was patient and took his time in the opening laps as he followed Dungey and Short around the course. Ben eventually made a move around Short and opened a comfortable cushion over the fellow Honda rider. BT rode a steady race to the checkers for second and second overall on the day.

"This feels really good to be up here," said Townley from the Thunder Valley podium. "It's been a long time since I've been up here and I feel like it has been a long time coming for me. With the injuries I've had it has certainly been a long, difficult road and this finish takes a huge weight off my shoulders. I can't thank the whole Troy Lee Designs/ Lucas Oil/ Honda team enough for their support. We've been making progress every weekend and I think things are just going to keep getting better."

Cole Seely has yet to have the results outdoors that he is capable of. Cole got off to a terrible start in moto one but quickly worked his way into the top ten. Once he got into ninth he was all alone with nobody in front or behind him and he settled into a nice pace for ninth, the best finish of his career. He followed that moto up with another terrible start in moto two. Again, Seely put his head down and started chipping away at the deficit in front of him. He made it to tenth and then tipped over in a rutted corner, losing two spots before he could remount. He charged forward again and made a pass for eleventh only to have that rider cut under him and knock him down again. He made yet another run at his assailant but ran out of time and finished in twelfth and earning ninth overall.

"I feel like I'm definitely making progress," said Seely. "My fitness hasn't been where it needs to be but it is definitely coming around. Now I just need to put all the pieces together and get a start, ride hard and hold the pace. I'm looking forward to Red Bud to see if I can continue to improve my results."

Tarah Gieger started way back in the opening moto of the WMX race. She made a good run to the front and was in third when a crash set her back. She remounted and moved up to fourth at the finish. Moto two looked good as Tarah started in second position. Before she could make a run at the lead she flew off the track at the bottom of the downhill and went down. She made a great run forward only to be knocked down by one of the more aggressive gals in the race. She would only get back to seventh and have to settle for seventh overall.

The team will now head to Red Bud, Michigan for one of the best events of the summer at the Red Bud Track and Trail Facility over the fourth of July. Come by and get a team poster and an autograph from Ben, Tarah and Cole this weekend in Michigan.

Fly Racing’s Short Claims 450 Moto Win
AMA Outdoor Motocross Series, Round 4 – Mechanicsville, Maryland
The AMA Lucas Oil Motocross made stop number four this past weekend at Budd’s Creek MX in Mechanicsville, Maryland and it was a great weekend of racing for Fly Racing. The weather and track conditions were near perfect and Fly Racing riders had a great weekend of finishes. The highlight of the weekend though had to be Fly team rider Andrew Short’s stunning first moto victory. Shorty pulled the holeshot and checked out for his first moto win of the year!

450 Class Highlights
Fly Riders Andrew Short, Weston Peick, Ben Evans, Kyle Regal, Josh Clark, and Terren O’Dell all qualifying for Motos. In Moto one it was Honda Red Bull Racing’s Andrew Short with the holeshot and riding his way to his first Moto win of the year! Fly riders Kyle Regal and Ben Evans were close behind, finishing 11th and 15th respectively. Weston Peick and Josh Clark rounded out the top 20 in Moto one finishing 17th and 20th.

In Moto two it was more of the same with Andrew Short with another holeshot setting him up for another great finish with a 5th. Merge Racing/American Honda backed rider Kyle Regal also has a good second Moto finishing 15th with fellow Fly rider and Team Ti-Lube/Brown Racing backed rider Ben Evans close behind in 16th. Weston Peick rounded out the top twenty for Fly racing with a 19th place finish in Moto two.

In Moto one it was DNA Shred Stix/Star Racing rider Broc Tickle Leading the way finishing 6th followed by fellow DNA rider Max Anstie in 8th with fellow Fly rider Alex Martin close behind finishing 15th.

In Moto two it was more of the same, and leading the way was Broc Tickle finishing 5th with Martin Davalos finishing 10th followed closely by Tony Gallo and Kyle Gills finishing 19th and 20th.

Weekend Race Report...Eks Brand Goggles

This past weekend in Budds Creek, Maryland and Calgary, Alberta, EKS(X) Brand goggles athletes made their mark at the highest levels with some good rides. Mike Alessi of Factory KTM raced hard to a second place in the first moto and put EKS on the podium. In the second moto, Mike made contact with another rider and bent his front disc thereby forcing Alessi to salvage as many points as he could in getting a twelfth. His 2-12 finishes added up to a fifth overall on the day.

Motoconcepts Yamaha teammates Ryan Sipes and Kyle Chisholm had great days and both placed inside the top ten of the 450 class. After four rounds, Alessi is fourth in the points and Sipes and Chisholm are tied for seventh giving EKS(X) Brand three riders in the top ten which is tied for the most riders in the top ten out of every goggle company out there.

Meanwhile in Calgary, Machine Racing’s Kyle Keast used EKS(X) Brand goggles to end up fourth overall on the day in the MX1 class and after three rounds up north, is currently second in the points.

Geico Honda Race Report...Budd's Creek

MECHANICSVILLE, Md. - Rising motocross star Justin Barcia recorded a pair of podium finishes Saturday at the AMA Budds Creek Nationals to lead the five-man GEICO Powersports Honda team. Barcia took home a third and a second place trophy in the day's two 250cc motos and pocketed the second most points of the event.

"I wish I was first, but in this heat to come out of here second overall, I'll take it," Barcia said, referring to the hot and muggy conditions that sidelined several riders. "It was hot and gnarly and I'm just drained right now. I have zero energy left. I put it all out there.

"I've been working really hard on my stamina back home in Georgia and I'm staying in the best shape possible. That's my job. I've won a race and I want to win more. I just have a few more things I want to make better and it'll happen."

All five GEICO Powersports riders finished the day in the top 10. Brett Metcalfe was sixth overall in the 450cc class, while 250cc pros Trey Canard (seventh), Blake Wharton (ninth), and Eli Tomac (10th) all did their best to represent the team.

Atop the team's sole 450cc entry, Metcalfe had a pair of sixth-place finishes. The Australian stayed with the top riders in both motos and had chances to lead at various points but, like many riders, was eventually worn down by the heat. Nevertheless, his effort resulted in him holding onto the No. 3 position in the championship points.

"I kind of died in the heat again," Metcalfe said. "I just didn't have the juice to hang on towards the end. Your vision gets a bit blurry and your energy goes way down. You reach a point where you're just hanging on.

"I was pleased to have two good starts and overall I rode okay, I just never got comfortable on the bike. To have two decent finishes and stay third in the points on a day when I was a bit off is pretty good."

Canard logged seventh and eight place results on his machine, a good result considering a dubious start to the action.

"We blew a head gasket just before the first moto and the guys were thrashing to fix it," Canard said. "I missed my gate pick and ended up getting the last position, which threw my start off. I rode hard, I rode strong, but it was kind of like we were behind all day.

"The heat wasn't as bad for me. I think I'm getting more and more used to it and my body is getting stronger. Going 7-8 isn't what we wanted so we'll have to come back next weekend and do better."

Continuing his trend of showing flashes of brilliance, Wharton was as high as second place in Moto 2 but an unfortunate spill cost him valuable positions and he ended up ninth. Coupled with an earlier 11th-place result, he finished up as the day's ninth-best rider.

"The first moto didn't go so good, a had a bad start and went off the track twice, so I really wanted make it up in the second," Wharton said. "I got a good start and was third but I cased a jump and it was muddy right there and I went down. I'm not even sure how. I'm not riding as good as I can right now and I need to fix it."

Rookie sensation Tomac continues to figure out life at the top of the motocross world. He started with an 11th-place finish in Moto 1 and improved to ninth place in Moto 2.

"The guys at this level are the best in the world and Eli is figuring things out," team manager Mike LaRocco said. "The speed we saw from him when he won Hangtown, that was real. But it takes more than speed to win consistently at this level. You have to learn the strategy of dealing with the heat, of riding against other guys that are really good every weekend; these things take time. He's going to be fine. He's got the talent to be a world champion for many years."

TLD Freestone Race Report

Round two of the Lucas Oil AMA Motocross Championship was held in the sweltering heat of Wortham, Texas this weekend. Despite the weather the Troy Lee Designs / Lucas Oil / Honda team riders all had great weekends and made improvements from the opening round.

Team leader Ben Townley started the weekend off right by slashing his way into second in the opening stages of the first 450 moto. Ben would remain there the entire moto, and post the quickest lap time of the moto, until the two lap board came out and Chad Reed made his way by with a crafty line in the whoops. Townley's third place finish was his first in 450 competition as well as the team's. The second moto didn't start as well as Ben tangled with another rider and went down in turn one. He suffered some road rash and a burn from a hot exhaust system but he jumped in his bike and salvaged whatever points he could. His 3-16 moto finishes would leave him in 8th overall on the weekend.

"The first moto was a good step for me," said Ben after the race. "I made smart passes and felt like I rode like myself, at least before the heat started to get to me. Regardless, it was a good race to build on and if I can put two of those together now I'll be looking good for a solid overall finish."

The team's two 250 riders, Wil Hahn and Cole Seely, also had reason to smile in Texas. Wilbur put in two solid motos, going 9-6 for 7th overall. Cole Seely spent much of the first moto in second place. He moved to third for a couple laps and then eventually ran out of steam and finished eleventh. Cole went down in the first turn with two other riders and would spend the rest of the moto clawing his way back to 19th at the end.

"I'm pretty stoked about the way things went," said Wil. "My starts were decent and I put in good solid laps the whole time. With as hot as it was I'm just pumped I didn't completely melt down like some of the other guys. I'm looking forward to next weekend already."

Tarah Gieger backed up her podium at the series opener with another solid third place finish in Texas. The personable WMX star was happy to on the podium at the end of the day but still wants to improve.

"I really want to get up in the race for the lead," she said. "I qualified quickest here in practice so I know I can run up front I just need to put everything together. I've got a few weeks now to work on some things and hopefully I can get a win at the next round."

The team heads to Mount Morris, PA this weekend to fight for the coveted podium spots at the High Point National.

Trey Canard Race Report...Hangtown

Rancho Cordova, Calif. (May 22^nd, 2010) – GEICO Powersports Honda rider Trey Canard rode to a third place overall finish at the Rockstar Hangtown Motocross Classic, the first round of the 2010 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Series in Rancho Cordova, CA.

Canard turned in a solid morning practice, landing him in the top three in qualifying times.  He continued his strong performance in Moto 1, grabbing the holeshot, but eventually fell back a few spots, finishing the Moto in 7^th place.   Moto two turned out better for Canard, as he battled back through the entire 30 minute Moto to finish 2^nd.  Canard ended the day on the podium with a third place points finish. 

With a great deal of hype surrounding the high level of talent in the 250-class Lites field, Canard proved that he will be one of the top racers to contend with all season.  "It was an all-around pretty good weekend for me" said Canard, "My starts were great, but the first Moto definitely didn’t go the way I would have hoped.  I rebounded in the second Moto though, which means a lot for me."  

Trey Canard will head to Wortham, TX on June 9th for the Freestone National, the second round of the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross series.  He stands in third place in overall points.

Torrance, CA: The 2010 AMA Motocross Championship and Women’s Motocross Championship kicked off at the Hangtown Motocross Classic in Rancho Cordova on Saturday May 22. Honda Red Bull Racing’s Davi Millsaps, Andrew Short and Ashley Fiolek showed great speed at the opening round of the season aboard their CRF450R and CRF250R machines. GEICO Powersports Honda newcomer, 17-year-old Eli Tomac, scored his first-ever AMA Motocross overall victory in his AMA professional debut.

In the 450 class, Millsaps got away to flying starts in both motos on his CRF450R and challenged for the lead. Finishing the first moto in third and going one better in moto two with a second place finish, the Red Bull athlete kicked his Motocross season off to a great start with a third overall. Teammate Short was on target for a good result in moto one when he crashed after being hit hard in a turn, finishing in 15th place. He rebounded to nab fifth spot in race two, rounding out the weekend in 10th overall. Brett Metcalfe put in a strong showing in his 450-class debut for the GEICO Powersports Honda team, going 5-4 to finish fourth overall. Another Honda racer making his return to racing after a long bout with injuries was Troy Lee Designs Honda’s Ben Townley. He too was among the top contenders, finishing 6-7 for sixth overall on his CRF450R.

In the 250 class, Eli Tomac made an epic professional debut on his GEICO Powersports Honda CRF250R, winning a moto and scoring the overall victory. In the opening race, Tomac had a strong lead when he made an error in the closing stages of the race and finished third. With his first-race jitters behind him, he engaged in a battle for the lead in the second moto with his more experienced teammate, Trey Canard, before going on to win and clinch the overall victory.

“I am beyond happy right now,” said Tomac. “I think I am actually in shock and not sure how to feel about winning. I didn’t expect this. The first moto was purely lost due to a rookie error but I made sure I didn’t make the same mistake in the second moto. I was feeling it by about the 20-minute mark, but I held on right to the end and I’m really happy right now. The GEICO Powersports Honda team has been so supportive and helpful, and I can’t thank them and my parents enough for getting me this far.”

After getting the holeshot and finishing moto one in seventh spot, Canard rallied hard to take second in moto two and end the weekend third overall. Justin Barcia charged hard with two solid come-from-behind races after getting mid-pack starts to go 5-7 for fifth overall on his GEICO Powersports Honda CRF250R. Troy Lee Designs Honda’s Wil Hahn was fastest out of the start gate, grabbing the holeshot in moto two, and finishing eighth overall (13-6).
In the Women’s Motocross Championship, two-time champion Ashley Fiolek finished second overall on her Honda Red Bull Racing CRF250R. Challenging for the lead in both motos, Fiolek finished moto one in third and moto two in second spot. Tarah Geiger went 2-6 in her debut ride for the Troy Lee Designs Honda team to finish third overall and Elizabeth Bash—sponsored by Trey Canard Racing on a Honda CRF250R—nabbed sixth overall.

TLD Las Vegas Race Report

With Wil Hahn on the sidelines nursing an injured shoulder, Cole Seely was on his own to represent the team at the supercross series finale in Las Vegas. The Dave Coombs Sr. Memorial east/west Shootout pits the very best riders from the west coast against the top riders from the east coast in a one-race, no holds barred sprint to the checkers. Cole fought hard for fifteen laps and ended the night in eleventh place.

After posting good times in qualifying and his heat race, Seely was ready to get after it in the main event. His timing off the gate was good but he got pinched off going into the first turn and was forced to file in as the pack funneled into Sam Boyd Stadium. Cole would start the race somewhere near mid-pack and move up as far as eighth at one point.

"I felt comfortable out there but I couldn't get myself to push on this track for some reason," explained Cole. "It was kind of frustrating because I definitely think I should have done better than I did."

Cole lost a few positions at around the halfway mark and couldn't get them back. He pushed all the way to the finish and crossed the line in eleventh. He had this to say about his race and the 2010 supercross season.

"Things really didn't click for me tonight. I'm a little bummed because this is really my type of track. Overall, I'm happy with the way this season has gone. I had a second place finish in San Diego and I'm going to try to improve that by one spot next year when we get back to Anaheim."

To commemorate the race, and to honor our armed forces, Troy Lee created custom US Air Force inspired helmets, and race gear worn by Cole Seely during the Las Vegas supercross. The helmet and gear were autographed by pilots of the US Air Force as well as the TLD race team. Costella and Blose the big winners at the seventh annual GEICO Powersports MiniMotoSX

Drew Gosellelaar leads an electric bike sweep of the podium in the history-making electric versus gas-powered dirt bike battle – the Energy Crisiscross

 

Las Vegas, NV (May 7, 2010) – Derek Costella, the Monster Energy backed BBR rider won the first ever World Final that combined all of the nights expert and youth class podium finishers with nine of the world’s top international mini bike racers. The win earned him the right to be recognized as the world’s best mini bike racer, a $3,000 check and a new car entertainment system compliments of Pioneer electronics.  Red Barron backed Michael Blose defended his title in the premier 12-inch expert class along with podium finishes in the 10-inch expert and World Final races.  Costella and Blose each collected over $6,000 each for their multiple podium finishes at the world’s largest mini bike race. 

The 10-inch expert class ended up being the race of the night as Derek Costella took the holeshot but was soon passed by Michael Blose and then defending champion Ryan Abrigo also made his way past. On the final lap, Costella re-took second place and then made a last turn pass on Blose to steal the win.  Abrigo held on for third.  However, the final results of this class are pending review. 

Michael Blose got revenge in the 12-inch expert class by defending his title on his Red Barron mini over French mini phenom, Mike Valade and Derek Costella. Valade worked his way up from a bad start for the impressive finish in a stacked class that included several past MMSX champions including Kyle Engle that finished 4^th, David Pigngree 6^th and Chris Gosselaar who finished 10^th. 

Austin Politelli dominated the youth classes on his CHP backed mini by winning both the 10-inch and 12-inch classes. Logun Pickering and Killian Woder rounded out the podium in the 10-inch class while James Gardiner and Pickering shared the podium in the 12-inch class and they all earned a chance to race the top expert and international riders in the World Final race that wrapped up the evening. In the 12 years and under youth class, Robbie Wageman took the win over Carson Brown and Ryan Lazar.  

Erika Short defended her title in the women’s class over Tatum Sik and Jackie Ives.  Mike Reefman came all the way from Australia to take the win in the 35-plus vet class on his Pitster Pro mini over Matthew Skerret and Ricky Lee. 

Brandon Schreuder won the 10-inch amateur class over Devin Manahan and Kevin Popaeko.  Jimmy Peyras upheld French honor with a win in the 12-inch amateur class over Matthew Skerrett (who took two podium positions during the evening) and Austin Tessitore. 

Clint Johnson took the win in the 10-inch stock/mod class over Shea Koester and Joshua Sheffer.  Then Tiger Lacey, the long time Supercross racer made an aggressive pass to take the win in the 12-inch stock/mod class over Clint Johnson and Jay Maloney. 

In the much anticipated first ever AMA sanctioned electric versus gas powered race, dubbed the Energy Crisiscross, Drew Gosselaar led an electric bike sweep of the podium riding a Quantya ahead of Zero mounted Chris Dvoracek and fellow Zero rider and former World Motocross Champion Sebastian Tortelli. The electric bikes took the top six spots with Jay Maloney on a Kawasaki taking seventh ahead of Jimmy Lewis on a BBR Honda 150F.  The rules restrict the modifications to the gas powered bikes and require use of the stock frame, forks, cylinder, carburetor and engine cases and they proved to be outgunned by the electric bikes but it was still evidence that electric bike technology has come a long way. 

The final race of the night was the World Final, which combined the podium finishers in the youth and expert 10-inch and 12-inch classes with nine of the top international riders. Derek Costella, the winningest rider in MiniMotoSX history once again proved his skills on a mini bike by taking the win over France’s Mike Valade and Michael Blose to become the first ever World Final Champion.  Ryan Abrigo finished 4^th ahead of fifteen year old Austin Politelli the evenings dominant youth rider.

Honda Tops Seattle SX

Torrance CA: The Honda Red Riders took on round 15 of the 2010 Supercross series in Seattle, WA on Saturday, April 24, and Honda Red Bull Racing’s Davi Millsaps and Andrew Short brought the battle to the Supercross competition aboard their Honda CRF450Rs. GEICO Powersports Honda’s Kevin Windham put on an impressive show, leading every lap of the race en route to winning the Supercross event.

Earning a good start out of the gate and challenging up front from the get-go, Millsaps had the misfortune of going down in the whoops on the opening lap but rallied back with an impressive come-from-behind effort. Relegated to 18th position, the Honda racer sliced through the pack to take the checkers in a hard-fought fifth place. Short was right behind his teammate in sixth position and rounding the final turn of the race when disaster struck; he stalled nearing the finish line. Scrambling at the base of the finish-line jump, Short dropped three spots but still took the checkers in ninth place. Up front, Windham put together his best effort of the year, scoring his first Supercross win in 2010 aboard his CRF450R—his last win coming on this same track in Seattle in 2008. Overcoming extremely difficult track conditions, the veteran racer shot to the lead on the opening lap and enjoyed a healthy gap by the time the checkers fell.

“This feels amazing,” said Windham. “There’s something about Seattle and me that just works. I last won here in 2008 and to come back and be on top again in 2010 is just awesome. As I get older, things like this are much harder to come by. This race was all about keeping it up on two wheels and surviving to the end. I can’t thank the GEICO Powersports Honda team enough for all their support throughout the season and my race bike was just perfect tonight.”

In the Supercross Lites West competition, GEICO Powersports Honda’s Trey Canard was challenging teammate Blake Wharton for the lead when the pair made contact on the opening lap. Wharton came out on top and remained among the top contenders throughout the race, finishing just shy of the podium in fourth position. Canard went down and was forced to resume his campaign from the back of the pack. Making up eight spots by the race’s end, the champion racer finished in 11th place. Troy Lee Designs Honda’s Wil Hahn equaled his season best result by nabbing second spot on the podium.

“I’m really pumped to get second,” said Hahn. “I trained really hard during the break between rounds and I felt really confident coming into this round. I’m on a great team with great bikes and I’m going for the win at the final round next week.”
