Steel City Report: American Honda

Torrance CA: Honda Red Bull Racing’s Kevin Windham came out on top at round eleven of the AMA Motocross Championship at Steel City Raceway in Delmont, PA on Saturday, September 4, aboard his CRF450R. GEICO Powersports Honda’s Trey Canard made it a double victory for Honda by clinching the 250-class victory aboard his CRF250R.

 

Despite not competing in the premier 450 Motocross class for years, Windham showed that at 32 years of age he still has what it takes to win. In moto one the 16-year racing veteran battled for the lead with GEICO Powersports Honda’s Brett Metcalfe before taking control of the race and setting the stage for a Honda podium sweep. Windham came out on top, Metcalfe nabbed second and Troy Lee Design’s Ben Townley clinched third place aboard his CRF450R. In the second moto Windham moved into an early lead but relinquished a spot on lap four. The Honda racer held off a determined charge by Metcalfe once again to take the checkers in second place, which earned him the overall victory (1-2).

 

"This win is definitely up there with some of my greatest career moments and I’m stoked to have the opportunity to be out here racing," said Windham. "I’m learning to cherish each and every one of these moments with each passing year as I’m not getting any younger and you never know when the next opportunity will come again. The Honda Red Bull Racing team was awesome this weekend and I really had to work hard to keep Metcalfe honest in both motos."

 

The battle for second place in the championship got even hotter for Windham’s teammate Andrew Short, who came into Steel City with a three-point lead over Metcalfe in the series points standings. Short continued to rip off fast starts in both motos but his 4-5 moto results versus Metcalfe’s 2-3 tally saw the pair switch spots in the overall standings. Short’s hunt to regain second in the championship chase will be played out at the final round next weekend at Pala Raceway, CA.

 

Metcalfe’s 2-3 finishes at Steel City gave him second overall at the round. Despite suffering a broken nose during the first moto, Townley still finished third, but a first-turn pile-up in moto two took him out of the competition. Still his third place finish in moto one (plus a 37^th in moto two) gave him 10th overall.

 

In 250cc competition, Canard made a perfect sweep of both motos, pulling off a pair of flawless rides to score his fifth overall victory this season aboard his CRF250R. With just seven points separating Canard from the points leader with one round to go, his campaign toward winning his first-ever Motocross Championship will be decided at the final round next weekend. Teammate Eli Tomac had a good showing, going 4-5 aboard his CRF250R to finish just shy of the overall podium in fourth place. GEICO Powersports Honda’s Justin Barcia nabbed sixth (10-6) and Blake Wharton finished seventh (9-7) aboard his CRF250R while Wil Hahn got eighth (5-11) aboard his Troy Lee Designs Honda CRF250R. Rounding out the top ten, Honda privateer Darryn Durham went 8-10 to secure 10th overall.

 

In the Women’s Motocross Championship, Ashley Fiolek showed good speed from the get-go aboard her CRF250R, going 1-2 to take second overall for the round. In the opening moto, Fiolek grabbed the holeshot and went on to lead every lap of the race en route to taking victory. In moto two, she put in a solid chase for the lead that included a spectacular charge in the closing turns of the race. Unfortunately Fiolek went down with a turn to go but still managed to take the checkers in second spot to put her second overall. Tarah Gieger went 4-7 aboard her Troy Lee Designs Honda CRF250R for sixth overall.

Unadilla Race Report...Troy Lee Designs Racing

AMA Motocross - New Berlin, NY
After a few weeks off the entire team returned to New Berlin, New York healthy and ready to race. Ben Townley was coming off an injury he suffered at Washougal and Wil Hahn was back after shoulder surgery nearly two months ago. Cole Seely even spent some time on the sidelines with a broken nose and he was back at Unadilla as well.
The 450 motos did not go the way Ben Townley planned.

After climbing as high as third in the championship standings two rounds prior, Ben was looking to make up some ground on his competitors at a venue that he is quite fond of. BT fought with Andrew Short for the first part of moto one as he tried to make his way into the top five. By the mid-way point in the race Ben seemed to lose his drive and slipped several spots to seventh by the end of the moto. His second moto would prove to be more frustrating and Townley would cross the stripe in ninth position for sixth overall on the day.

"This definitely wasn't the result I was looking for today," said a disappointed Townley. "I put on a bit of a charge right at the beginning but then I just couldn't find a way around Short and it stalled me out a bit. The second moto wasn't much better. I was really hoping to do well here because I do like this track. All I can do is look forward and prepare for next weekend. I love that facility as well and I need to get back up to the front."

Wil Hahn and Cole Seely were both returning from injury as well. Seely posted one of his better motos all year in the first go-round with a ninth. Hahn could only get to fourteenth by the end of the race. The second moto Cole didn't get the start he needed to capitalize on his first moto finish and he would spend the entire race making passes towards the front. Wilbur would do likewise and get to eleventh at the checkers while Cole could only get to eighteenth at the finish. Wil Hahn just cracked the top ten with 14-11 motos for tenth. Cole Seely posted 9-18 moto scores to get a twelfth overall on the day.

As the series moves to New England and the infamous MX338 in Southwick there is much to be hopeful for. All of the TLD riders, including Florida resident Tarah Gieger, love the sandy conditions. Look for great things out of the team next weekend.

Washougal Race Report...American Honda

Torrance, CA: The Honda Red Riders took on round eight of the 2010 AMA Motocross Championship at Washougal Motocross Park in Washougal, WA on Saturday, July 24, and Honda Red Bull Racing’s Andrew Short and Kevin Windham impressed the crowd by running up front aboard their CRF450R race machines while GEICO Powersports Honda’s Trey Canard scored the trifecta in taking his third-straight overall 250-class victory aboard his CRF250R.

In moto one, Short pulled off the holeshot and led Honda’s charge through the first turn with teammate Kevin Windham and GEICO Powersports Honda’s Brett Metcalfe hot in tow. Short kept control out front until a series of small errors on lap five shifted the Honda racer into the number two spot where he remained until the race’s end. The start of the second moto mirrored the first with Short nabbing the holeshot—his eighth holeshot this season—and racing away to an early lead before surrendering a spot at the midway point. Short’s 2-2 results put him second overall for the round. Davi Millsaps’ replacement Windham was fast out of the start gate and was up front banging bars with the frontrunners early on in both motos until the veteran racer gave up a few spots to go 9-9 and end the round seventh overall.

"The Honda Red Bull Racing team really has my race bike dialed in for getting awesome starts," said Short. "The team did an amazing job and I had a lot of speed this weekend. I get great starts in almost every race and I’m quick to pull a good lead but I need to find that extra something within me to hang on out front until the very end. I absolutely love Washougal and this is one of those tracks that I really look forward to racing every year."

In other 450-class action, Metcalfe scored his third overall podium of the season by going 3-5 to finish the day third overall. Launching to a solid first-moto effort aboard his GEICO Powersports Honda CRF450R, Metcalfe later put in a heroic effort to rally back from 25th place in moto two to take the checkers in fifth spot, earning him a spot on the overall podium the hard way. Troy Lee Designs Honda’s Ben Townley was up front in the thick of the action in moto one when he crashed hard while negotiating the whoops. The CRF450R racer bruised his shoulder in the fall and was not able to participate in the second moto but is expected to be back racing at round nine in three weeks’ time.

In the 250 class, GEICO Powersports Honda’s Trey Canard absolutely dominated the competition, grabbing both holeshots on the day and leading every lap of racing to successfully clinch his third-straight overall victory. Aboard his CRF250R, the likeable Honda racer was unstoppable out front, setting a blistering pace and putting solid gaps between himself and his nearest competitors.

"I struggled at the start of the season to get everything figured out but things have really started to come together now," said Canard. "I’m in a really good place mentally, which I think has made all the difference, and my goal with four rounds to go is to stay out front and earn as many points as I can by winning motos."

Blake Wharton put in a solid performance aboard his GEICO Powersports Honda CRF250R going 5-4 to end the round fourth overall. Teammate Eli Tomac fared well going 7-9 to finish seventh overall while Justin Barcia finished in 16th position (32-10).

Torrance, CA: The Honda Red Riders took on round seven of the 2010 AMA Motocross Championship and Women’s Motocross Championship at Spring Creek MX Park in Millville, MN on Saturday, July 17, and Honda Red Bull Racing’s Andrew Short, Kevin Windham and Ashley Fiolek led the way aboard their CRF450R and CRF250R race machines while GEICO Powersports Honda’s Trey Canard captured his second-straight overall 250-class victory aboard his CRF250R.

With Honda Red Bull Racing’s Davi Millsaps out with an injury, veteran Honda racer Windham joined Short on the team to contest the 450 class aboard the CRF450R. In moto one, Windham got away to a flying start, grabbing the holeshot and racing to an early lead which he held for seven laps. Windham surrendered a few spots before the race’s end, including a spot to Short, to finish moto one in a solid fifth position. Once by Windham, Short continued to press hard among the leaders and eventually finished third. In moto two it was Short who was fastest out of the starting gate, grabbing the holeshot before fellow Honda racer Ben Townley got by aboard his Troy Lee Designs CRF450R to take the lead. Short retaliated with a series of aggressive maneuvers to regain control of the lead on lap two. A lap later, Short surrendered the lead and ultimately finished moto two in third place—putting him second overall for the round. Windham was never far away, taking the checkers in fourth spot for fourth overall.

"It feels so good to be back racing motocross," said Windham. "I was pumped to get such a good start and holeshot the first moto. I came into the first round not knowing where I stood in terms of race speed as I haven’t raced motocross in the 450-class since 2007. I personally was hoping for a top-ten finish, so to get fourth overall is awesome. It was definitely a lot of fun and I’m really looking forward to seeing what I can do at the next round."
In more 450-class action, privateer Honda racer Kyle Regal scored another solid result aboard his CRF450R, going 8-2 to finish the round third overall. Townley placed fifth overall with 4-5 moto finishes and GEICO Powersports Honda’s Brett Metcalfe went 16-6 to get ninth overall.

GEICO Powersports Honda’s Trey Canard made it two wins in a row in the 250 class, going 2-1 aboard his CRF250R to clinch his second consecutive overall victory. From start to finish, Canard battled back and forth for the lead in moto one before settling for the number two spot. Come moto two, the Honda Red Rider got away to a good start and quickly moved into the top spot, where he soon extended a lengthy lead he would never relinquish, clinching the overall victory. Teammate Justin Barcia joined Canard on the moto two podium and his 16-3 moto finishes put him eighth overall. Blake Wharton raced his GEICO Powersports Honda CRF250R to sixth overall (5-7) and teammate Eli Tomac went 13-11 to end the round 11th overall.

"I’m so happy right now," said Canard. "It was tough work in the heat and humidity but I got the job done and I’m really happy about that. It’s nice to be able to make it two in a row for the GEICO Powersports Honda team."
Ashley Fiolek finished moto one in third position but retaliated in moto two to dominate the competition and clinch her third moto win of the season and finish second overall for the round. Fastest out of the start gate in both races, Fiolek held off the competition to claim both holeshots. Troy Lee Designs Honda’s Tara Gieger joined Fiolek on the podium, going 2-4 to end the round third overall.

Team TLD Race Report...Millville MN

MA Motocross - Spring Creek

Spring Creek Motocross Park was the site of round seven of the Lucas Oil AMA Motocross Nationals in Millville, Minnesota. The Troy Lee Designs/ Lucas Oil/ Honda team posted solid finishes and surged forward in the point standings in two of the three classes they competed in.

Ben Townley turned a mediocre start around quickly in moto one by racing forward to fourth in the opening laps of the race. Ben struggled to find a rhythm but still ended the moto in fourth, setting him up for a good overall finish. In moto two Townley shot to the lead on the opening lap and looked to be on his way to a moto win. Then, just before the end of the second lap, Ben lost his front end in a turn and went down. The fall cost him multiple spots and he would spend the rest of the moto picking riders off. Ben was well outside the top ten after his crash and finished the moto in fifth, leaving him fifth overall on the day.

"Yeah, it was a little frustrating today," said Townley. "The first moto I couldn't seem to get it going. That was tough but my finish was still good enough that I could end up on the podium if I had a good second moto. In the second moto I got right to then front and I was feeling pretty good about the track. I made a stupid mistake and fell over and that was it. I did the best I could to make up spots but I really wasn't happy with getting fifth."

Townley's determination would move him forward in the point standings to third overall. Ben now sits just a handful of points out of second.

Tarah Gieger raced to a second and a fourth in Millville for yet another third overall finish. The podium finish locks Tarah into a solid third in the point’s race.

Cole Seely had a rough day in Minnesota. The young rider started moto one in sixth but a crash on the second lap would cost him a significant amount of time and he would enter the race again a lap down. Moto two started badly as Cole rounded the first turn mid-pack. Seely put his head down and charged, coming up to 14th by the motos end, which included a nasty rain storm that turned the track into a slimy mess. Despite the great ride in moto two Cole would only finish nineteenth on the day.

The team heads to Washington State next week seeking wins and podium finishes at the infamous Washougal Motocross Park.

After 6 of 12 rounds, Rockstar/Makita Suzuki’s Ryan Dungey has established himself as the man to beat in the Rockstar Energy/Rockwell Time Fast Lap Competition. The Fast Lap Competition, new for 2010, awards one point to the rider who posts the fastest lap time in the second 450 moto at each round of the 2010 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Nationals. Red Bud Race Report...Honda

Torrance, CA: The Honda Red Riders took on round six of the 2010 AMA Motocross Championship and Women’s Motocross Championship at RedBud in Buchanan, MI on Saturday, July 3, and Honda Red Bull Racing’s Andrew Short made a solid run up front aboard his CRF450R while teammate Ashley Fiolek clinched her first overall victory of the season aboard her CRF250R. Another Honda racer to win at RedBud was GIECO Powersports Honda’s Trey Canard, who scored his first-ever 250cc motocross race win and overall victory.

Two-time women’s champion Fiolek had her best showing of the season, going 1-1 in the women’s competition to clinch her first overall victory this season. Grabbing the holeshot in both motos, Fiolek dominated both races to take the overall win. Fellow Honda racer Troy Lee Designs’ Tara Gieger joined Fiolek on the podium going 3-3 to end the round third overall.

Short got a good start in the first 450cc moto and was among the lead group from the get-go. Rounding the opening lap in the number two spot, Short put in a solid performance to eventually take the checkers in third place. In moto two he again fired off to a fine start and went on to finish fifth, placing fourth overall for the round.

In other 450-class action, Troy Lee Designs Honda’s Ben Townley looked on target to record his first race win of the season, leading every lap in the opening moto until he fell in the closing stages on the final lap, which relegated him to fourth. Townley rebounded in moto two to grab third place and close out the round third overall. Brett Metcalfe’s 5-4 finish aboard his GEICO Powersports Honda CRF450R put him fifth overall and privateer Honda racer Kyle Regal finished seventh overall with 7-7 moto finishes.

GEICO Powersports Honda’s Trey Canard went 4-1 in the 250cc competition to successfully score his first-ever overall Lites motocross win on his CRF250R. Getting a lackluster start in moto one where he rounded the opening lap in 10th position, Canard worked his way through the pack, picking off riders one by one to eventually take the checkers in fourth place. Getting a better start in moto two and running among the lead pack, he set a blistering pace before moving into the lead on lap 11 where he remained until the race’s end. Teammates Justin Barcia and Blake Wharton were never far away with Barcia going 5-3 to finish in fourth overall and Wharton going 6-4 to get fifth overall. Eli Tomac finished 10th overall, going 12-9 aboard his GEICO Powersports Honda CRF250R.

AMA Motocross - Lakewood, CO

Round six of the Lucas Oil AMA Motocross Nationals marked a milestone for the TLD race team. Ben Townley finally got the monkey off his back by finishing second at the Thunder Valley facility. His result marked the first podium for the team in the premier class and Ben's first podium on a 450 as well. His teammate Cole Seely had the best finish of his young career with a ninth overall in the 250 class. Tarah Gieger struggled with bad starts and crashes and ended her podium streak with a seventh overall.

In the first 450 moto Ben nearly had the holeshot but settled into second around turn one. Ben lost his front end in a wet turn a couple laps later and would fall back to seventh. He put on a charge to get back to the front and tipped over again in a corner. This fall would really take the kiwi out of his rhythm and he could only get back to sixth at the finish. He was less than pleased with his moto one result. Moto two started with Ben in third place off the start. This time Ben was patient and took his time in the opening laps as he followed Dungey and Short around the course. Ben eventually made a move around Short and opened a comfortable cushion over the fellow Honda rider. BT rode a steady race to the checkers for second and second overall on the day.

"This feels really good to be up here," said Townley from the Thunder Valley podium. "It's been a long time since I've been up here and I feel like it has been a long time coming for me. With the injuries I've had it has certainly been a long, difficult road and this finish takes a huge weight off my shoulders. I can't thank the whole Troy Lee Designs/ Lucas Oil/ Honda team enough for their support. We've been making progress every weekend and I think things are just going to keep getting better."

Cole Seely has yet to have the results outdoors that he is capable of. Cole got off to a terrible start in moto one but quickly worked his way into the top ten. Once he got into ninth he was all alone with nobody in front or behind him and he settled into a nice pace for ninth, the best finish of his career. He followed that moto up with another terrible start in moto two. Again, Seely put his head down and started chipping away at the deficit in front of him. He made it to tenth and then tipped over in a rutted corner, losing two spots before he could remount. He charged forward again and made a pass for eleventh only to have that rider cut under him and knock him down again. He made yet another run at his assailant but ran out of time and finished in twelfth and earning ninth overall.

"I feel like I'm definitely making progress," said Seely. "My fitness hasn't been where it needs to be but it is definitely coming around. Now I just need to put all the pieces together and get a start, ride hard and hold the pace. I'm looking forward to Red Bud to see if I can continue to improve my results."

Tarah Gieger started way back in the opening moto of the WMX race. She made a good run to the front and was in third when a crash set her back. She remounted and moved up to fourth at the finish. Moto two looked good as Tarah started in second position. Before she could make a run at the lead she flew off the track at the bottom of the downhill and went down. She made a great run forward only to be knocked down by one of the more aggressive gals in the race. She would only get back to seventh and have to settle for seventh overall.

The team will now head to Red Bud, Michigan for one of the best events of the summer at the Red Bud Track and Trail Facility over the fourth of July. Come by and get a team poster and an autograph from Ben, Tarah and Cole this weekend in Michigan.

Lucas Oil – Troy Lee Designs – Honda racer, Ben Townley has successfully scored his first overall podium of the season at round 5 of the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross championship held in Denver Colorado. The gutsy New Zealander posted a 6-2 score for second overall and now has his sights set on his first AMA Motocross victory.

Townley had one of his best starts of the season in moto 1 and was positioned in 2nd behind fellow Honda rider Andrew Short. BT hit a wet patch of circuit going into a turn and lost his front, sending him to the ground. He quickly remounted around 10th and gave chase and quickly moved up the ladder again. After securing 4th position BT hunted down Brett Metcalf in 3rd spot and was about to make his move on the Australian when he went down again. Remounting for the second time, he salvaged 6th position but ran out of time to make a move on Kyle Cunningham and Metcalf as he closed them down on the final lap.

Determined not to make the same mistakes again, Townley was motivated going into moto 2 and once again grabbed a good start. He quickly moved from 4th to 3rd and then set up Andrew Short to move into second behind series leader Ryan Dungey. From there he rode a strong, steady race which earned him a well deserved podium and second overall for the day.

"I felt really good in the first moto but then washed out on the first lap. I came back really strong and was looking for a podium spot when I went down again behind Brett and that pretty much took the wind out my sails. I’m over these small crashes and mistakes but guess when you are pushing that hard these things can happen, but in the second moto I sort of backed it down a little and it paid off with a podium which is great for my confidence and for the team." explained Townley.

Townley still occupies 7th spot in the overall standings however the Kiwi is only a mere 16 points off second place Brett Metcalfe with Ryan Dungey sporting a 51 point over the Australian as the series hits the halfway mark next weekend in Red Bud – Buchanan, Michigan.

Torrance, CA: The Honda Red Riders took on round four of the 2010 AMA Motocross Championship at Budds Creek in Mechanicsville, MD, on Saturday, June 19, and Honda Red Bull Racing's Andrew Short led the charge with his first moto win of the season on his CRF450R.

Short rode a faultless opening moto to clinch his first win in 2010, nabbing the holeshot and leading every lap of the race. Fast out of the start gate, Short extended a comfortable lead out front en route to victory. In moto two, Short jumped to an early lead but a few errors during the race saw him fall back and finish in fifth. Short's solid 1-5 results put him 2nd overall-equaling his best overall result this season. His Honda Red Bull teammate Davi Millsaps got a mid-pack start in moto one and was holding down eighth spot when he crashed hard, requiring trackside medical attention and a trip to the hospital. Examination ascertained that Millsaps suffered multiple injuries so he was kept at the hospital for observation. It is anticipated that he will be released shortly to return home, where he will be under the care of his regular physician.

"It's awesome to win again," said Short. "The last time I won a moto was at the Colorado motocross race in 2007 so this has been a long time coming. I owe the Honda Red Bull Racing team and our sponsors a huge shout out for all the support they've given me over the years. Everyone on the team puts in a huge effort each and every week and I'm just really happy I could repay them with a win. I got great starts in both motos, which I'm pumped about. In moto two I just didn't ride as smooth as I did in the first moto but I'm happy to get second overall for the round. I can't wait to be on home soil next week and race in front of my Colorado home crowd. I'm feeling really motivated so it should be a lot of fun."

In more 450-class action, GEICO Powersports Honda's Brett Metcalfe ran among the top contenders in both motos before going 6-6 and finishing the round sixth overall. Troy Lee Designs Honda's Ben Townley went 14-3 to finish eighth overall.

In the 250 class, Justin Barcia showed he had the skills and speed to battle up front aboard his GEICO Powersports Honda CRF250R, going 3-2 and finishing the round second overall. Troy Lee Designs Honda'sWil Hahn rode a solid first moto and was fastest out of the start gate in moto two to go 5-4 for fifth overall. GEICO Powersports Honda's Trey Canard went 7-8 for seventh overall and teammate BlakeWharton finished in ninth (11-9). Eli Tomac got the moto one holeshot aboard his GEICO Powersports Honda CRF250R but managed only a mid-pack start in the second moto and finished 10th overall (10-13).

Rockstar Makita Suzuki's Ryan Dungey won his third overall in a row at round four of the AMA Motocross Championship at Budds Creek at the weekend and opened up his Championship lead to 36 points.

"It was a good weekend for us," Dungey said. "I felt strong in both motos and the whole Rockstar Makita Suzuki team has really put together a great race bike. We just need to focus on the next race and keep plugging away."

In Moto 1, Dungey fought his way into second after a sixth-place start and was making some good moves to secure the lead when he found himself off his bike. With the RM-Z450 still running and Dungey feeling strong, he remounted and focused on working his way towards the front. He realised his goggles were filled with dirt and he was forced to remove them mid race, but he soldiered on.

In Moto 2, Dungey got a great start and rode the first three laps in second. He kept looking for his chance to move into first, and with the unrelenting power of his RM-Z450, he soon found his way to the front of the pack. Dungey stayed in first place for the remainder of the moto, eventually taking the win. His 3-1 finishes gave him the best overall results of the day, putting him on top of the podium with his third overall win in a row.

Dungey's team mate Matt Moss was hoping that he'd be able to deliver solid results at Budds Creek and in Moto 1 he proved that he has been putting in a lot of practice track hours aboard his RM-Z450. With 2010 being his first year on the 450, and suffering an injury that sidelined his entire Supercross season, Moss has been steadily working his way up the rankings. He had a very strong showing in Moto 1 when he nearly broke the top 10, finishing 13th and fighting the entire moto. In the second moto, Moss battled his way to an 18th-place finish, which was good enough to put him in 16th place overall and his best finish of the season so far.

"Budds Creek was OK for me, though I wasn't very satisfied with my starts and position overall," Moss said. "Next weekend in Colorado, I'm going in there focused on getting in the top 10. I know I can do it."

Round 5 of the AMA Pro Motocross series takes place on June 26 at the Thunder Valley National in Lakewood, Colorado.

The hot and humid weather at Budds Creek Raceway didn't stop Ben Townley and Wil Hahn from having impressive rides at round four of the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship. Even team rookie, Cole Seely, logged his best overall finish outdoors with an eleventh place.

Ben Townley opened the day with a solid ride in moto one of the 450 class. After working his way up to fourth position, Townley looked to have a firm grasp of the position. Then, with only a few laps to go, something went wrong. Townley began to slow and would lose time and positions due to a malfunctioning fuel pump. The fluke incident dropped Ben from fourth to fourteenth by the time the race was over. He came out firing in moto two and again charged towards the front, this time settling into the third spot. Josh Grant would challenge for the position late in the race but Ben held on to put his TLD/ Lucas Oil/ Honda ride up on the podium and earn the Muscle Milk Recovery Ride of the Day award.

"It feels good to end the day on the podium," said Townley. "I've not been able to put two solid motos together yet, riding the way I know how to ride and that is frustrating. Today was just one of those things that happens sometimes in racing. I feel like I was in good position to be on the podium overall but it will have to wait. Colorado will be tough but if we can have a good week I think we can accomplish our goal there."

Wil Hahn continues his hot streak off the gate by running near the front in the first 250 moto. He proved that he is fit enough and fast enough to run at the front by holding fifth position down in the first moto. The second moto was even more impressive as Wibur pulled a big holeshot and led the first several laps of the race. He would drop to fourth by hold off Christophe Pourcel for fourth in the moto, an impressive ride for the Texan. Wil's 5-4 motos landed him fifth overall on the day.

Cole Seely struggled with his endurance in the heat but still went 13-11 for eleventh overall on the day. The talented rider is still learning what it takes to compete at the absolute highest level of motocross racing.

KTM Race Report...Budd's Creek

Mechanicsville, MD – Jagermeister/KTM rider Mike Alessi finished 5th overall at the fourth round of the Lucas Oil AMA Motocross Championship Series.

Alessi had a decent start in the first moto coming around the first turn in 4th position. He quickly moved up to 2nd place and was able to maintain a quick pace behind leader Andrew Short. After a strong ride he was able to finish the moto in 2nd place, holding off a hard-charging Ryan Dungey who finished 3rd.

In the second 450 moto, Alessi had another good jump but went a little wide and came out of the first turn in about 5th position. Near the end of the first lap Alessi made contact with another rider while going for a pass which heavily damaged the front brake causing complete loss of his front brake system. Unfortunately, having no front brake caused Alessi to take wide lines to handle the track which caused his lap times to fall. He eventually salvaged a 12th place position. His 2-12 moto scores earned him 5th overall.

In the 250 class, FMF/KTM rider Tommy Searle had a mid-pack start in moto one and had to try and work his way up. He struggled to make up some time due to a nagging shoulder injury and eventually finished 12th.

At the start of the second 250 moto, Searle got a good jump out of the gate but was hit from behind which sent him sailing across the track into the repeater banner and dropped him to the tail end of the pack. As he picked up his pace and began to make some passes he came to the triple step-up and took a middle line between two riders. The rider on the outside squared up the next turn cutting into Searle’s line sending his handlebar into Searle’s already injured shoulder. The pain was too much to finish the race and Searle didn’t finish the moto. He will return to his home in Murrieta, CA for another MRI. It is undetermined if he will race the next round.

Mt Morris National...KTM Race Report

Morris, PA – Jagermeister/KTM rider Mike Alessi and FMF/KTM rider Tommy Searle didn’t have the results they wanted to see after each made a few mistakes at the third round of the series held at High Point Raceway but both riders put in two impressive charges in the final stages of their second moto to build confidence heading to the fourth round next week.

Alessi qualified second fastest in the timed practice earlier in the day. In the first moto he took a 4th place start and maintained that pace for the first part of the race. In the second half he made a few mistakes as the rain lightened up and eventually fell to 7th where he finished the moto.

"I rode a little tight in the first moto and felt tired. Between the motos I tried to rest as much as I could and better prepare myself for the second moto," commented Alessi.

His second moto was much stronger. This time around he earned a 3rd place start and quickly moved into 2nd. He battled with Ryan Dungey and Josh Grant early in the race. Alessi continued to battle with the top riders throughout the moto making impressive passes in the process. At the end of the race he finished 5th. His 7-5 scores earned him 5th overall.

In the 250 class Tommy Searle earned a 4th place start in the first moto. At one point he ran as high up as 3rd place which was a remarkable feat considering the continuous troubles he has been having with his shoulder. He pushed through the pain and finished a respectable 6th overall.

In the second moto Searle got a mid-pack start and charged hard to come up through the pack. At one point he was as high up as 6th place. It looked like he would continue to move forward until a big mistake over a corner double sent him to the ground hard. "The crash was so big that the wheels on the ground flag came out and I had to sprint over to the area to check him out," remarked FMF/KTM Team Manager Casey Lytle. Searle collected himself and decided to get back in the race.

Now on the fifth lap of the race, Searle returned to the track over one minute down from 20th position. "We were hoping he could catch 20th so he could get at least one point for the moto," commented Lytle.

Searle did more than that. He caught up to 20th with just three laps to go with no sign of settling. Over the next three laps he caught and passed five more riders and eventually put himself in 15th position. "The passes he was making were insane. The entire team is proud of him. I believe that once he watches the playback his charge through the pack will inspire a deeper confidence heading into the next round," said Lytle.



Searle’s 6-15 scores earned him 12th overall and the confidence to fight for a podium position at the next round.

TLD Freestone Race Report

AMA Motocross - Freestone

Round two of the Lucas Oil AMA Motocross Championship was held in the sweltering heat of Wortham, Texas this weekend. Despite the weather the Troy Lee Designs / Lucas Oil / Honda team riders all had great weekends and made improvements from the opening round.

Team leader Ben Townley started the weekend off right by slashing his way into second in the opening stages of the first 450 moto. Ben would remain there the entire moto, and post the quickest lap time of the moto, until the two lap board came out and Chad Reed made his way by with a crafty line in the whoops. Townley's third place finish was his first in 450 competition as well as the team's. The second moto didn't start as well as Ben tangled with another rider and went down in turn one. He suffered some road rash and a burn from a hot exhaust system but he jumped in his bike and salvaged whatever points he could. His 3-16 moto finishes would leave him in 8th overall on the weekend.

"The first moto was a good step for me," said Ben after the race. "I made smart passes and felt like I rode like myself, at least before the heat started to get to me. Regardless, it was a good race to build on and if I can put two of those together now I'll be looking good for a solid overall finish."

The team's two 250 riders, Wil Hahn and Cole Seely, also had reason to smile in Texas. Wilbur put in two solid motos, going 9-6 for 7th overall. Cole Seely spent much of the first moto in second place. He moved to third for a couple laps and then eventually ran out of steam and finished eleventh. Cole went down in the first turn with two other riders and would spend the rest of the moto clawing his way back to 19th at the end.

"I'm pretty stoked about the way things went," said Wil. "My starts were decent and I put in good solid laps the whole time. With as hot as it was I'm just pumped I didn't completely melt down like some of the other guys. I'm looking forward to next weekend already."

Tarah Gieger backed up her podium at the series opener with another solid third place finish in Texas. The personable WMX star was happy to on the podium at the end of the day but still wants to improve.

"I really want to get up in the race for the lead," she said. "I qualified quickest here in practice so I know I can run up front I just need to put everything together. I've got a few weeks now to work on some things and hopefully I can get a win at the next round."

The team heads to Mount Morris, PA this weekend to fight for the coveted podium spots at the High Point National.
