Webb, Carmichael to Lead Rockstar Makita Suzuki

Off-road racing legend Mike Webb will be leading Rockstar Makita Suzuki's 2011 Championship efforts as Team Manager for both the AMA Supercross and AMA Pro Motocross series with support from Ricky Carmichael.

Webb has been a staple in off-road racing for nearly three decades and is currently at the helm of the 2010 GNCC off-road team as they take the Suzuki fuel-injected RM-Z450 towards the Championship title. In his storied history, Webb has helped Suzuki earn countless Championships in off-road racing and has been the Team Manager for the GNCC bike efforts since 1992.

"I'm really excited for this opportunity to help defend the AMA Supercross and Motocross titles that Ryan Dungey so masterfully won this year," Webb said. "I'm thrilled to be working with the team and Yoshimura, as we're all fully committed to keeping that Number One plate on the RM-Z450. I think 2011 is going to be a great season for us, for Suzuki, and for the RM-Z450."

To help spur the Rockstar Makita Suzuki team to another Championship-winning year in 2011, Webb has also secured the efforts of Ricky Carmichael as team adviser. Carmichael has a long history with Suzuki, as well, and is considered one of the greatest racers of all time in Supercross and Motocross. Carmichael will be helping the current Rockstar Makita Suzuki racers to fully-prepare for competition and advising them on bike set-up, race strategy and overall training approaches.

Said Webb: "Ricky is an undisputable Champion. I can't think of a better guy to help the Rockstar Makita Suzuki team to another winning season and I know the racers will all benefit from having him on our side."

With Webb and Carmichael at the helm of the Rockstar Makita Suzuki Supercross and Motocross team, Suzuki is looking forward to another phenomenal year at the races with their winning RM-Z450 in 2011.

Brea, Calif. – August 30, 2010 – History has been made. Ryan Dungey is the 2010 AMA Pro Motocross Champion, securing his second title of the year this weekend at Southwick MX in Massachusetts. The 20-year-old rookie has gained enough points in the series with his complete domination of the 450 motocross class to take home the trophy with two races still left on the schedule. Dungey claimed the 2010 AMA Supercross title in May, making him the youngest rookie racer ever to do so, and now has added the Pro Motocross championship to his list of accomplishments, making him the only rookie ever to clinch both titles. Dungey has been unstoppable on his Suzuki fuel-injected RM-Z450 and has taken home the win in the past nine races in a row and won 16 out of 20 motos

"What Ryan has done, no one has ever done before including McGrath, Stewart, Carmichael," Team Manager Roger DeCoster said. "No one has ever won both the Supercross and a National Championship back to back as a rookie. It's pretty impressive. Sometimes, because Ryan is such a subdued nice guy, you don’t really realize what a big thing that he has done. I expect more and more perfection, but you look back and see that he is doing things that no one has ever done before – it's pretty impressive."

Dungey went into Southwick focused on racing his best race, like always. He lined up at the gate determined to give his best performance on the sandy, technical track in Massachusetts, and at the start of moto 1, Dungey started near the front of the pack. He moved into second place and stayed there most of the race. During the last lap, Dungey was battling for the lead when the opportunity to move up presented itself. Dungey and his RM-Z450 took the lead with less than a lap to go and took the win.

With the championship in view, Dungey lined up for moto 2 focused on finishing strong again. Dungey moved into the lead early in the race and by the time the checkered flag flew, he was more than 24 seconds ahead of second place. Dungey clinched the title by ending the day 151 points ahead of second place with only two races left on the schedule.

"This feels great," Dungey said after the race. "It’s a lot of hard work and a lot of long weeks in the off season to prepare for this, but its all the better when you pull it off and win the championship. It's not all me, everyone on the Rockstar Makita Suzuki team put in 110 percent into everything they do and that’s all I could ever ask. We work well together and enjoy working together at the same time. It makes it fun."

"The Suzuki family is ecstatic to add this championship to our trophy case," Rod Lopusnak, Suzuki’s National Sales Manager for the Motorcycle Division, said. "Looking back at the last year, it is hard to find one word other than ‘Champion’ to express what Ryan, the RM-Z450, and Team Rockstar Makita Suzuki have accomplished in their rookie season!"

Dungey has made history winning a total of four national titles in the past two years. Ryan won two titles in 2009, the AMA Supercross Western Regional Lites and the 250 Motocross championships, both on the RM-Z250, as well as being the hero of Team USA at the Motocross of Nations in Italy. Now with the 2010 Supercross and the Motocross title in his possession, Dungey was named the captain of Team USA and hopes to keep the Motocross of Nations championship in the U.S.

The next AMA Pro Motocross race takes place at Steel City in Delmont, PA, on September 4th. Dungey, despite having clinched the title, will be focused on battling for the lead there.

Red Bud Race Report...Rockstar/Makita Suzuki

-Ryan Dungey went 1-1 and claimed his fifth victory in a row aboard his Suzuki fuel-injected RM-Z450 on Saturday at the legendary Red Bud MX track.
-Dungey is now 64 points ahead in the series with six races left on the schedule.
-The RM-Z450 pulled Dungey to the holeshot in moto 2 and gave him the power to gain an 11-second lead by the end of the race.

Brea, Calif. – Rockstar Makita Suzuki’s Ryan Dungey kept the moment rolling at the sixth round of the AMA Pro Motocross series at the notoriously tough Red Bud MX track in Buchanan, Michigan, on Saturday. Dungey and his Suzuki fuel-injected RM-Z450 fought hard in the first moto to take the win, and the second moto they went from holeshot to finish line in true championship fashion.

In moto 1, Dungey took the win after a three-racer battle that was easily one of the most thrilling races in recent history. Dungey came off the gate and was in third as he settled in to study the racers ahead of him. As he took note of the fastest lines on the track, Dungey prepared to make his move. With 10 minutes left in the moto, Dungey used the renowned power of the RM-Z450 to make a pass into second place. He diced with the leader until the last lap of the race when his dedication to physical training and his mental agility let Dungey capitalize on a mistake made by the leader. With the championship-winning power of the RM-Z, Dungey crossed the finish line first.

As the racers lined up for moto 2, Dungey was ready to take on the competition again. His RM-Z450 shot him off the starting line and took him to the holeshot. While Dungey had some competition in the first lap, he started to pull away from the pack soon after. By the end of the race, Dungey had put an 11-second gap between himself and the rest of the field.

Dungey’s 1-1 victory gave him his fifth overall win in a row, and he now controls the championship chase by 64 points.

Dungey’s teammate Matt Moss put together his most consistent and solid performance to date at Red Bud. The Australian rookie finished 15th in both motos, earning 14th overall, which is his best finish so far in 2010.

Round 7 of the AMA Pro Motocross Series takes place after a break in the schedule. The racing continues on July 17th at Spring Creek in Millville, Minnesota, which is considered Dungey’s home track. Look for the Rockstar Makita Suzuki team to put together another awesome race performance there.

Hangtown Race Report...Rockstar Makita Suzuki

-The Motocross season opener at Hangtown provided a tough track, and Ryan Dungey finished eighth overall for the day and earned 26 points toward the championship.
-Matt Moss made his U.S. racing debut, but was unable to finish the second moto when another racer landed on Moss’ wrist in the eighth lap.
-The Rockstar Makita Suzuki team is now preparing for Round 2, which takes place at the Freestone National in Texas.

Brea, Calif. – Rockstar Makita Suzuki battled its way through the Hangtown AMA Motocross opener on Saturday. With a tough track and hungry competition, Ryan Dungey and Matt Moss fought their way to the finish. Dungey finished eighth overall after going 10-6 in the motos, and Moss had a tough day, finishing 27th in the first moto and was unable to complete the second moto after another racer landed on him.

In the first moto, Dungey was near tenth place coming out of the holeshot. After stalling his bike on the second lap, he fell back in the pack. “Ryan didn’t have the best start off the gate and in the second lap he stalled the bike,” Team Manager Roger DeCoster explained. “That dropped him back to 20 or 21st place, and it took him some time to get back to his rhythm.” Dungey worked his way from the middle of the pack, made up a lot of ground, and was able to finish 10th. Moss, in his first U.S. race, battled with a past wrist injury that limits his range of motion. After getting his bearings, Moss came across the finish line in 27th place.

Moto 2 had a better result for Dungey. Though he wasn’t the first off the line, Dungey pushed his way through the pack with his fuel-injected RM-Z450 and made it to sixth place by the time the checkered flag waved over Hangtown. “I don’t think we got the best setting, suspension and chassis-wise, but we made some adjustments for the second moto that seemed to work better,” DeCoster said. “We need to go back and check our bikes, because I feel like that wasn’t a normal result. We should’ve been much closer to the front than we were, but Ryan finished both motos strong. We’ll go back to work and sort it out and hopefully do better at the next race.” Moss, unfortunately, was not able to finish the second moto after another racer clipped him coming off a jump in the eighth lap, hitting Moss’ previously inured wrist.

Overall, Dungey finished the day in eighth place, earning 26 points toward the championship. Dungey, Moss, and the rest of the Rockstar Makita Suzuki team will take the bye week to work on settings and prepare for Round 2 of the AMA Motocross series at Freestone in Texas.

Newly-crowned AMA/ FIM World Supercross Champion Ryan Dungey finished the 17-round season with overall victory at Saturday's night's final round in Las Vegas.

"I wanted to end the season with a bang," said the Rockstar Makita Suzuki rider after leading every one of the 20 laps at Sam Boyd Stadium and taking his sixth win of the season. Dungey was crowned Champion in Seattle, but after two tough mud races, the Rookie was ready to prove that he earned his Championship the old fashioned way - by being the fastest guy on the track.

"Coming off the last two weekends it was a little rough," Dungey said, "so I wanted to come out and win in Las Vegas. The whole Rockstar Makita Suzuki team was great, and I was able to lead consistent laps and then win. I'm really pumped on that!"

Dungey set the fastest time in practice, and proceeded to go even faster once the gate dropped for the Main Event: He grabbed the holeshot and never looked back, leading every lap to a decisive victory in front of a packed stadium. Dungey capped his 2010 AMA/FIM Supercross Championship with a phenomenal night of racing, and he's now focusing on getting himself and his fuel-injected RM-Z450 ready for the Outdoor National series that starts in two weeks.

"It was nice to win, and the way he won it was good," said Team Manager Roger DeCoster. "Ryan was fast in practice, won his heat race, got the holeshot, and he won like a Champ. It was a good way to end the season for us and now we'll focus on getting ready for the Outdoors and hopefully pick up there where we left off here."

Dungey came up through the Suzuki Amateur program and won the 2009 Lites Motocross title and Western Regional Lites Supercross title, as well as winning the Motocross des Nations. With his 2010 AMA/ FIM Supercross Championship, 20-year-old Dungey is the youngest champion ever and also only the second rookie ever to claim the title; the first being Jeremy McGrath.

The Outdoor National Series begins on May 22 at Hangtown and Dungey and his RM-Z450 plan to continue racing and winning.

Ryan Dungey has clinched the 2010 Monster Energy AMA/ FIM World Supercross Championship after racing to fourth place at Saturday night's 15th round in Seattle.

The Rockstar Makita Suzuki Rookie - in his first season in the Supercross Class after moving up from the 250cc Lites class - gave the 2010 RM-Z450 its first major Championship success of 2010 in front of a packed-out audience at the Qwest Field Stadium.

Dungey is now untouchable in the points standings with two rounds remaining, leading on 320 points, compared to nearest rival Ryan Villopoto on 266; and with only 50 points available.

"It's been an amazing season to sit here after 15 rounds and be the Champion," Dungey said after the race. "It was a lot of hard work and effort put in by everybody on the Rockstar Makita Suzuki team. As a little kid, I would dream as I watched races and say, 'One day, I want to be that guy.' This really is a dream come true, and all the hard work has paid off. The whole team gives 110 per cent every week, and when we're all on the same page, this is what can happen. I have to thank the Man Above for making all this happen."

Team Manager Roger DeCoster said: "It was a great season and we're thankful and happy and we proved that the equipment is good and Suzuki has a good base bike to work with. The Rockstar Makita Suzuki team did a good job setting it up."

The race at Qwest Field in Seattle was the roughest and toughest track of the season. DeCoster said: "The track was really tough and some of the ruts were so deep and so long that they went from one end of the stadium to the other on the straights. When you see guys this good sitting down while riding, it made everyone look humble. They didn't look like Super Champions out there; until you saw the three-foot-deep ruts close up."

Despite the rough track and intense racing, Dungey pulled through and earned enough points to secure the Supercross Championship; and with it has now entered an elite club with only one other member: Supercross racers who've won the title in their Rookie year. The other rider who managed that is Jeremy McGrath.

"Ryan is now a Rookie Champion, which is pretty amazing," DeCoster said after the race. "Only Jeremy McGrath has done that before, but Dungey is a World Champion because this is an AMA and FIM Championship. I don't believe that was the case with McGrath's first Championship, so this is an amazing feat."

Dungey started off the season just the way Team Manager DeCoster and ace Technician Mike "Goose" Gosselaar had planned: At Anaheim 1, Dungey shot out of the starting gate and made it known that he wasn't racing for just a podium spot; he was gunning for the top spot. After leading lap after lap, defending Supercross champion James Stewart caught up to him. Most racers may have conceded to Stewart and his reputation for fast and aggressive racing, but not Dungey: He battled every second of the race until the chequered flag flew, and then he was only a very short distance behind Stewart. The tone for 2010 was set. Dungey was out to race hard and win. That night, Dungey took the second spot on the podium and "Goose" took the MMI award for outstanding technician. The match-up of Dungey, DeCoster, Goose and the RM-Z450 was already making people take notice.

The fuel-injected RM-Z450 was well suited to Dungey's racing style, and it propelled him to great starts and fast getaways at the beginning of the season. At Round 2, he got his first Supercross victory and the Holeshot. His RM-Z450's immediate throttle response, impressive power output and race-minded gearing gave Dungey the winning-edge he needed.

He continued to collect points, and became the series points-leader after Round 2 in Phoenix. Amazingly, the talented riddder never gave up that lead. While he didn't always win - and a few races he didn't find the podium - no other racer on the track was as consistent and no other machine was as mechanically-sound as the Rockstar Makita Suzuki RM-Z450.

Dungey won a total of five races: Phoenix was the spot for the first Supercross win of his career, and he followed that up with wins in Anaheim 2, Atlanta, Dallas and St. Louis and has finished on the podium in 10 of the 15 races so far.

He got three of the first four holeshots of the season, including Anaheim 1, Phoenix, and San Francisco. The holeshot at Round 3 in Anaheim 2 went to Dungey's team-mate Austin Stroupe, who was also riding the fuel-injected RM-Z450.

Dungey's appeal has stretched further than the reach of Supercross. With a slew of impressive sponsors, including Rockstar, Makita, Yoshimura, and Fox Racing, he's even got the attention of retail giant Target and the extremely selective Nike 6.0: Dungey helped design Nike's Air MX boot and was the only racer who rode the entire season with them. He also has two very important racing legends standing by him who believe he is the future of the sport of motocross racing: five-time World Champion Roger DeCoster and Supercross "Greatest of All Time" Ricky Carmichael. "It's nice to win it with someone like Ryan because we picked him up from the Suzuki amateur support program and we started off with somebody who a lot of people weren't paying attention to," DeCoster said. "He came and talked to us a few times and he gave off a good impression and we had a feeling he would be good. We tried it out and he got better and better, and after this season, now he's a Rookie Champion."

He also credits his family and their unwavering support for his success, as well as the Rockstar Makita Suzuki team that has put together one of the most impressive race bikes ever to hit the Supercross track: the 2010 fuel-injected RM-Z450.

Suzuki Announces 2010 Racing Plans

Brea, Calif. - American Suzuki announced at the International Motorcycle Show in Long Beach, California on Friday, its significant racing agenda for 2010. The Rockstar Makita Suzuki racing efforts won an unprecedented six championships in 2009, dominating the Supercross, Motocross, Road Racing and ATV championship series, and Suzuki has committed to putting the competition-crushing GSX-Rs, RM-Zs, and QuadRacer on top of the podium in 2010.

"Suzuki products are truly industry leading and we stand behind them 100 percent," Senior Advertising Manager Steve Bortolamedi explained. "We proved that last year with our six titles. For 2010, what better way to demonstrate this again than by putting our reputation on the line?"

Suzuki will commit to a larger racing effort along with returning sponsors Rockstar Energy Drink and Makita tools, which will be managed by long-time partner Yoshimura R&D of America. Yoshimura will house all of the Rockstar Makita Suzuki racing teams under one roof.

"Yoshimura will be managing Suzuki racing efforts in Supercross, Motocross, Road Racing, and ATV Racing," Yoshimura R&D Senior Vice President Don Sakakura said. "We hope to be able to showcase the performance of the Suzuki line of high-performance motorcycles and ATVs. Suzuki is proud of their products and is ready for the upcoming racing season. We at Yoshimura are equally looking forward to 2010."

Suzuki revealed its impressive roster of racers for the 2010 season.

Road Racing: Tommy Hayden and Blake Young are both returning to take the championship-winning GSX-R 1000 to the top of the AMA Pro Superbike class.

Supercross/Motocross: Racing phenom Ryan Dungey is returning to the team for 2010 aboard the unstoppable RM-Z450. Australian Matt Moss, who won the 2009 Australian National Pro Lites Championship as well as the Australasian Supercross Pro Lites Championship, will join Dungey in the 450 class. Rounding out the team will be Austin Stroupe, who's set to compete in the Pro Lites East series aboard the RM-Z250.

ATV: Back-to-back AMA ATV Motocross champion Dustin Wimmer will defend his number 1 plate aboard the QuadRacer R450, and he will be joined by racing up-and-comer Josh Creamer.

GNCC: Josh Strang will return to the XC1 class to win with the RM-Z450.

When asked about Suzuki's chances for the 2010 season, Sakakura was optimistic, "With great sponsors like Rockstar, Makita and the Suzuki family of program partners, it really frees us up to go out and win races. With team managers like Roger DeCoster in MX, Pete Doyle in Road Racing, and Kory Ellis and Kevin Mummah in ATV, I'd say we are looking pretty good."

Suzuki's "Champions Choose Suzuki Tour" is traveling to all the IMS motorcycle events, allowing the public to get a close-up view of Suzuki's numerous championship-winning machines. The tour includes Mat Mladin's 2009 GSX-R 1000 superbike, which helped the legendary racer capture his seventh AMA Superbike title.

Along with securing its championship race pedigree for the upcoming 2010 season, Suzuki also solidified its reputation for industry-leading technology with the launch of the new 2010 RMX450Z and RM-Z250 motorcycles, as well as the updated RM-Z450. Suzuki unveiled these highly anticipated machines at the show.

American Suzuki Motor Corporation celebrated an outstanding six 2009 championships in style this week at its corporate headquarters in Brea. On hand for the event was seven-time AMA Superbike champion Mat Mladin, West Coast Supercross Lites and 250cc Motocross champion Ryan Dungey, 450cc Motocross champion Chad Reed, ATV Pro Motocross champion Dustin Wimmer and WERA champions Team Vesrah were on hand to be congratulated by Suzuki employees and sponsors.

The event kicked off with an award ceremony where the champions were given custom engraved awards presented by the President and Executive Vice President of American Suzuki Motor Corporation. Following the presentation, attendees were treated to a catered lunch provided by Chronic Tacos and Rockstar energy drinks.
 

Suzuki celebrates six championship titles by offering their employees free meals, free stuff and a chance to meet the athletes that made it all happen.

Afterwards Suzuki employees were given a chance to get their favorite Suzuki riders autograph and photos taken. In addition, the team road race and motocross transporters were on hand for tours and to display championship winning equipment. Mat Mladin’s GSX-R1000, Ryan Dungey’s RM-Z250, Chad Reed’s RM-Z450 and Dustin Wimmer’s QuadRacer R450 were on display to check out along with a product display from Makita power tools.

Rockstar Makita Suzuki Factory Racing's Chad Reed battled the elevation as well as his competitors at Colorado's Thunder Valley MX Park and came away with his overall championship points lead in tact.

The two-time AMA Supercross champion finished in fourth place overall, thanks to third and seventh-placed moto finishes. Rockstar Makita Suzuki team mate Michael Byrne was right there with Reed, finishing in fifth place overall. The Australian rode two impressive motos, bringing home sixth and fourth finishes.

Finally, a very injured Mike Alessi attempted to race the first moto but crashed early and was unable to finish. Alessi recently had successful surgery on his broken kneecap and hopes to resume racing full-time as soon as possible.

In the 250 class, Rockstar Makita Suzuki's Ryan Dungey finished with identical results to his 450 class team mate Byrne. In the first moto, Dungey overcame a bad start to go from 21st to sixth place on his Rockstar Makita Suzuki RM-Z250. In the second moto, the Minnesotan fared better on the start and brought home a fourth-place finish. Dungey is currently second overall in the championship points standings.

Chad Reed:

"I got a good start, actually a great start, in the first moto, then I went out and rode like crap out there. It's pretty disappointing. I've been struggling all day long. In the second moto, I was still struggling. I'm dealing with some personal issues that I just have no control over and it's tough. But I've got to say thanks to all the guys at the Rockstar Makita Suzuki team."

Michael Byrne:

"It was a pretty good weekend for us. I had a good practice again this week, which was good for me. I was a little bummed in the first moto because I was in third at one point and then some guys got by me. But I'm still making progress, so I can't be too disappointed. I have to look at where I'm coming from. In the second moto, I rode strong. I just need to work on a little more speed so I can run with the guys at the front."

Mike Alessi:

"I wanted to get back in the championship because there's still a lot of races to go and motos to be raced and the championship isn't out of reach. So I just wanted to try and get some points this weekend. In the first moto, I got a great start - I think I was second or third right off the gate, but a few guys got past and they were running a fast pace. I was trying to stay with them but I went down and my first thought was my knee. I thought about trying to make the second moto, because that's just my mentality - even after I crashed I tried to do a few laps -- but it just hurt too much."

Ryan Dungey:

"It was a tough race and the altitude definitely played a part, but everybody had to deal with it - no excuses. Where I really threw it away was on the starts. I just couldn't get off the line like I wanted to and that set me back. But overall, I came out of this race healthy and I finished both motos, even though I've struggled here in the past. Now I'm just looking toward Red Bud."
