Those that have followed our show over the years know just how much DMXS respects motocross history and the men that forged the way from the genesis.  We stand on the shoulders of those men today and we’re are honored to welcome some of them on tonight as we dedicate the entire show to the 1980 USGP at Carlsbad, where in “One Day of Magic,” the local kid Marty Moates rode his privateer LOP Yamaha into infamy while beating the best the world had to offer and becoming the first American to win the Carlsbad 500cc USGP.

Todd Huffman has become the sport’s curator with his epic Motocross Files series and other project films that helped bridge the past to an entire new generation of fans and the heroes we idolized growing up.  He has done it yet again with “The Carlsbad USGP: 1980 - One Day of Magic” movie set to premiere June 22 at the Spreckles Theater in downtown San Diego.  Check out www.CarlsbadUSGPMovie.com for more information and to view the trailer. 

This would be Roger Decoster’s last race at Carlsbad and it proved to be yet another challenging day for “The Man” as his Carlsbad curse continued.  He never won at the legendary Southern California track and will give us his take on the race and more tonight.

Brad Lackey was the odds-on favorite American to win and battled hard with Moates in the second moto for the overall.  The Kawasaki rider was still searching for his first title and needed every championship point he could get.  A costly error and a chain link fence decided his fate for the day, but he was pumped for the local kid and American fans.

Danny LaPorte ended up with a second overall for the day and felt Marty’s unrelenting pressure throughout the day. He was the second American to lead the first moto and electrify the crowd as the tide seemed to turn in GP racing.

Rick Johnson was the last winner of the Carlsbad USGP in 1986, but was one of the thousands of fans lining the fence that day cheering on our country’s best riders and will give us his perspective at the unbelievable upset he witnessed.

Bob Hannah was not racing that day, but his stellar career overlapped the transition from the European domination to that fateful day in 1980 where the sport was changed forever.

Marty Tripes may be best known for winning the Super Bowl of Motocross at the LA Coliseum in 1972, just a few weeks after turning 16, but the local San Diego native had his own victory at the 250cc GP race at Unadilla in 1978, and knows the importance of those early successes for American motocross.  He was also on the fence watching that day and will give us a sense of seeing a San Diego kid shock the sport.

Laurens Offner was the founder of LOP Yamaha, the team Marty rode for, and also one of his closest friends.  He will be able to give us some insight on how that day changed Marty and the pressure to live up to the magic of that win.

Gavin Trippe was one of the most influential promoters and publishers in the 70’s and 80’s and was recognized for his achievements with an induction into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame.  He was the race promoter in 1980, but was responsible for the first USGP at Carlsbad in 1973 that was considered the Woodstock of motocross.

SALT LAKE CITY, UT (June 8, 2010) The top Rockwell Time Team rider this past weekend at Freestone was the #20 of Broc Tickle. Broc fought the intense Texas heat and ended the day 4th overall in the Lites class with 8-2 moto scores. Fellow Rockwell riders Jake Weimer and Justin Barcia also cracked the top ten in the super competitive Lites class. Weimer followed up his impressive 5th place finish in the first moto with a 12th in the second moto, giving him 8th for the day. Barcia grabbed 10th overall with 10-8 moto scores. Going into Mt. Morris, Tickle, Weimer, and Barcia sit 5th, 7th, and 8th in series points, respectively. Jumping up to the 450 class, Rockwell rider Mike Alessi came back from a disappointing 12th in the first moto to leading the second moto. Unfortunately Mike would be regulated back to the 5th position by motos end and would walk away from Freestone with a 7th overall. Rockwell rider Davi Millsaps would also have a weekend he would rather forget as his 10-19 moto scores gave him 16th for the day. Watch for Millsaps and Alessi to bounce back at Mt. Morris and regain their positions at the front of the pack.

TLD Freestone Race Report

Round two of the Lucas Oil AMA Motocross Championship was held in the sweltering heat of Wortham, Texas this weekend. Despite the weather the Troy Lee Designs / Lucas Oil / Honda team riders all had great weekends and made improvements from the opening round.

Team leader Ben Townley started the weekend off right by slashing his way into second in the opening stages of the first 450 moto. Ben would remain there the entire moto, and post the quickest lap time of the moto, until the two lap board came out and Chad Reed made his way by with a crafty line in the whoops. Townley's third place finish was his first in 450 competition as well as the team's. The second moto didn't start as well as Ben tangled with another rider and went down in turn one. He suffered some road rash and a burn from a hot exhaust system but he jumped in his bike and salvaged whatever points he could. His 3-16 moto finishes would leave him in 8th overall on the weekend.

"The first moto was a good step for me," said Ben after the race. "I made smart passes and felt like I rode like myself, at least before the heat started to get to me. Regardless, it was a good race to build on and if I can put two of those together now I'll be looking good for a solid overall finish."

The team's two 250 riders, Wil Hahn and Cole Seely, also had reason to smile in Texas. Wilbur put in two solid motos, going 9-6 for 7th overall. Cole Seely spent much of the first moto in second place. He moved to third for a couple laps and then eventually ran out of steam and finished eleventh. Cole went down in the first turn with two other riders and would spend the rest of the moto clawing his way back to 19th at the end.

"I'm pretty stoked about the way things went," said Wil. "My starts were decent and I put in good solid laps the whole time. With as hot as it was I'm just pumped I didn't completely melt down like some of the other guys. I'm looking forward to next weekend already."

Tarah Gieger backed up her podium at the series opener with another solid third place finish in Texas. The personable WMX star was happy to on the podium at the end of the day but still wants to improve.

"I really want to get up in the race for the lead," she said. "I qualified quickest here in practice so I know I can run up front I just need to put everything together. I've got a few weeks now to work on some things and hopefully I can get a win at the next round."

The team heads to Mount Morris, PA this weekend to fight for the coveted podium spots at the High Point National.

Reed and Pourcel Remain In Control of Early Season Points Leads

MORGANTOWN, W.V. (June 7, 2010) - With two rounds of the 2010 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship in the books, four different faces have stood atop the overall podium in both the 450 and 250 classes. While Monster Energy Kawasaki's Chad Reed and French import Christophe Pourcel lead the way in the standings, respectively, the competition throughout the field is heating up as the series heads east for the first time this season with the Rockstar Energy High Point National this Saturday, June 12, for one of the most popular and important rounds of the entire championship.
Last weekend's Flagstar Bank Freestone National from Texas was a test of endurance and the will to survive as high temperatures pushed riders to their limit. The 450 Class was dominated by Rockstar/Makita Suzuki's Ryan Dungey, who overcame a rough start at Hangtown to post perfect 1-1 moto scores in dominating fashion. As a result, the rookie moved into second place in the standings and asserted himself as a contender for the premier class championship. The reigning series champion Reed followed with second overall while Merge Racing Honda's Kyle Regal, a true privateer, captured his first career podium in front of his hometown fans in third.
The 250 Class was a showcase of young talent as Pourcel, his Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki teammates Dean Wilson and Tyla Rattray, as well as GEICO Powersports Honda's Eli Tomac, all found their way to the front of the highly-competitive field. When all was said and done, it was Pourcel whose survival tactics and smart racing paid off in the end with his first win of the young 2010 season. Following him onto the podium was a Pro Circuit sweep with Rattray in the runner-up spot and Wilson rounding out the overall podium for the first time in his career in third. For Wilson, the success was somewhat bittersweet as the overall win would have been his had he not made an error in judgment while leading on the last lap of the final moto.
High Point Raceway is an historic part of the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship schedule. Since hosting its first race in 1976, the facility has become a staple of American motocross and has produced some of the most memorable races throughout the illustrious history of the outdoor nationals. Last season, the current points leaders in each of the respective classes-Reed and Pourcel-were virtually untouchable en route to claiming victory, both claiming flawless 1-1 moto performances. For Reed, it was his first career 450 Class victory and sparked his run to the 2009 premier class title. Pourcel's nearly perfect day served as a coming out party for the Frenchman, who gave notice to his competitors and the fans in the U.S. that he would become a regular at the front of the field.
MX Sports is once again pulling out all the stops in the development of the layout for 2010 and the thousands of East Coast enthusiasts can count on seeing the intense air time and ever-changing track conditions that have helped High Point Raceway become a favorite amongst riders and fans alike. With track architect Marc Peters of Petersbuilt Motocross Tracks leading the grounds crew, fans will see more spectacular racing than ever before on one of the sport's most popular circuits.

DUNGEY DOMINATES FREESTONE AMA MOTOCROSS

World Supercross Champion Ryan Dungey dominated both motos at the weekend's second round of the AMA Motocross Championship at Freestone Raceway in Wortham, Texas in scorching conditions - and moved to second place in the series.

The Rockstar Makita Suzuki rider took victory in both races as team mate Matt Moss - his wrist still sore from being landed on in the opening round at Hangtown - had a tough day, managing a 34-20 finish for 24th overall.

Anxious to improve on his Hangtown results, Dungey secured a good first moto start near the front. He then quickly made his way to the front, taking the lead on lap seven. As the heat and humidity intensified, however, Dungey and the Rockstar Makita Suzuki RM-Z450 held strong at the front, crossing the finish line well ahead of second place and taking his first moto win in the 450 class.

"We put in our work the last couple of weeks; actually, it goes all the way back to after the Vegas Supercross, really," Dungey said after the race. "I admit we didn't have a good race at Hangtown, but we kept after it as a team and pulled through in some pretty tough conditions in Texas. We know each other very well after four-plus years together and you could say we drew on our experience to win this overall. This was a team win."

The second moto saw considerably more treacherous conditions: The Freestone track had become much rougher and the 100-degree heat had yet to back off. For Dungey, however, it was just another race to win. Dungey started near the front and once again moved into the lead early on and never looked back. Dungey made it look easy aboard his Rockstar Makita Suzuki RM-Z450, stretching out another sizable lead on his way to his first 1-1 overall finish. For Moss, the second moto was an improvement, as he was able to finish 20th on the tough track with an injured wrist. His efforts were good enough for 24th overall.

"I had bad luck in the first race with a crash, but in the second moto I got a great start and my bike was working great," Moss said. "I just struggled with the heat and my wrist, but I do feel like I'm getting better. Next weekend will be good. I have seen the track and it's the sort of track that I like, so I can't wait to get there and get a good result."

Added Dungey: "My bike was a big advantage today. The power delivery is very controllable and on a rough track like this and it made it easier to be smooth and find good lines. My team really worked hard to get the setup right, and I can't say enough about them and the bike."

With the win, Dungey moves up to second place in the Championship. The next stop of the series is June 12th at Mt. Morris, Pennsylvania, for the Rockstar Energy High Point National.

Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship Notes and Stats: Flagstar Bank Freestone National

MORGANTOWN, W.V. (June 2, 2010) - The 2010 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship made its season premiere just two weeks ago with the Rockstar Energy Hangtown Classic. After a combined two hours-plus of on-track action in the premier 450 Class and highly-competitive 250 Class, it was Monster Energy Kawasaki's Chad Reed and GEICO Powersports Honda's Eli Tomac who stood atop the podium and claimed the early-season points lead. After a week break, the world's best riders head to the Lone Star State for round two of the 12-race season with the Flagstar Bank Freestone National from Freestone Raceway in Wortham, Texas.

After a 2009 season in which he sat atop the point standings for the majority of the summer en route to the premier class title, defending series champion Chad Reed will once again sport the red background number one plate, not only as the reigning title holder, but also as current points leader after taking the overall victory at the season opener at Hangtown.
"We got the championship started off on the right foot," said Reed. "Now we need to keep getting good results. It is going to be hot in Texas, but I'm ready for it. Living in Florida gives me a chance to ride and train in brutal heat and humidity. We need to keep working hard and keep the red number ones on for a while."
Reed's teammate Nick Wey is looking to improve his results from Hangtown and has been working hard since the season opener to find some speed.
"Hangtown was a bit of a wake up call to me," said Wey. "I know we have a great bike and I just need to start pushing my limits a little bit more. I've been training and riding hard during the break and I'm ready to get back to the front."

Mike Alessi gave the KTM 350 SX-F a stellar debut in Hangtown, finishing second overall to Reed, including a dominating second moto victory. Alessi showed that despite the smaller engine, the 350 is fast enough to compete with the larger 450's and left little doubt that he will be a factor in the 2010 title chase. He heads to Texas this weekend as the defending race champion.
"I can't say enough about how great my KTM 350 SX-F is running and to get that second moto win at Hangtown was great," said Alessi. "I rode well in Texas last year and I like the tough conditions that Freestone has produced in the past. I am looking forward to a great result at Freestone."
Honda Red Bull Racing
Davi Millsaps kicked-off the 2010 season with one of the best performances of his career. His 3-2 moto scores led the way for Honda and have given him a lot of confidence heading into Texas. After missing the early part of the season last year due to injury, Millsaps is excited about what lies ahead.
"The Freestone National is known as one of the hottest rounds on the Motocross calendar each year and it's looking no different this year," said Millsaps. "Staying hydrated and resting up between races will be the key to making it through the weekend. I missed this race last year because I was injured so I'm looking forward to racing at Freestone Raceway again on my Honda Red Bull Racing CRF450R."
Andrew Short was forced to work harder than he had hoped in Hangtown. A rough start in the first moto meant Short had to work diligently through the field to salvage points. He recovered well in moto two, finishing fifth to break into the top 10 overall by the day's end. He heads to his hometown race this weekend where he finished second overall last season.
"Last year I put the Honda Red Bull Racing team second overall at the Texas round, which I was really happy with," said Short. "The heat will again play a huge factor in the racing outcome this weekend, and as this is a hometown race for me, I'm very aware of how the hot conditions can play out. I'm looking forward to racing on familiar soil, in a familiar environment with friends and family watching on."
GEICO Powersports Honda
Brett Metcalfe was arguably the biggest surprise of the 450 Class at Hangtown. His premier class debut went exceptionally well, posting a fourth place result and giving him considerable confidence heading into the second round of the season.
"I'm really happy I got the opportunity to move up to the big bike class this season," said Metcalfe. "I felt good on my GEICO Powersports Honda CRF450R at Hangtown and can't wait to race it again this week in Texas."
Muscle Milk/Toyota/JGR
Josh Grant posted the fastest time in practice and qualifying prior to the start of the Hangtown Classic, serving notice to the field he would be a force to be reckoned with come race time. In moto one, the Joe Gibbs rider was arguably the fastest on the track, making a pair of stellar passes to finish in the runner-up spot. In the final moto, a bad start forced him to work his way through the field, but the deep talent level left him in 10^th and fifth overall.
Troy Lee Designs/Lucas Oil Honda
After two years away from American motocross, Ben Townley's return to action was impressive. The New Zealand native was in the mix at the front of the field throughout each moto and while he missed out on the podium, his sixth and seventh place moto results resulted in sixth place overall.
Rockstar/Makita Suzuki
Ryan Dungey didn't start off the 2010 season the way he would have hoped. The defending 250 Class champion and 450 Class rookie was a victim of a pair of tough starts in each moto at Hangtown and with one of the most talented fields in history lining up on the gate this season, working his way through the field proved to be a difficult task. He'll look to rebound in Texas where he claimed the 250 Class victory last season.
Rockstar Energy Suzuki
The Hangtown Classic was a tough day for the Rockstar Energy Suzuki team. After winning the final race of the 2009 season, Tommy Hahn had high hopes for the season-opener. A pair of rough starts relegated the Texas native to outside the top ten in each moto and while he moved up to ninth in moto one, he posted a 17^th place effort in moto two to finish 12^th overall. His 450 Class teammate Jake Moss experienced even more adversity, finishing outside the top 20 in each moto. However, his relentless efforts resulted in the RC Hard Charger Award for the first week.

250 Class
GEICO Powersports Honda
Eli Tomac's win in his professional debut garnered the majority of the headlines following Hangtown. The rookie's stellar debut quickly made him a star in the series and now he has put himself in the thick of the 2010 title fight by virtue of the victory. All eyes will be on him to see how he moves forward the rest of the season.
"Winning the Hangtown race in my professional racing debut is more than I could have ever imagined," said Tomac. "The GEICO Powersports Honda team and I plan to take every week as it comes, gaining as much experience as I can in my rookie season."
Trey Canard gave the GEICO Powersports Honda team two riders on the overall podium at Hangtown. The senior member of the team is still in search of that elusive first motocross victory and after watching a pair of rookie teammates capture their first wins dating back to last season, he is hungrier than ever to break into the win column.
"I finished on both Freestone National podiums and took third overall last year so I'm hoping to do even better there this season," said Canard. "I'm just like every other racer out there; I want nothing less than to win. My plan is to get good starts on my GEICO Powersports Honda CRF250R in both motos."
Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki
Christophe Pourcel is in a familiar position atop the 250 Class standings as he sits tied for the points lead after the first round. While he missed out on capturing the overall victory, his runner-up effort put him in prime position for the championship chase. Pourcel knows it is a long season and he knows the best way to win the title.
"I focused on getting moto wins and scoring as many points as I can," said Pourcel. "You have to be patient and sometimes the win isn't there. That is when you need to get as much as you can."
Pourcel's teammate Jake Weimer just missed out on the overall podium at Hangtown, and he is looking to make his move up this weekend. Despite the solid effort, he knows there are areas for improvement and has worked diligently to make the adjustments.
"I've been working on my starts," said Weimer. "There are a lot of fast guys, so you want to get through the first turn up front. We worked hard this week to get better starts and I hope the results show it on Saturday."
Rookie rider Dean Wilson was also strong at Hangtown, finishing sixth overall in his Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship debut, highlighted by a fourth place effort in the final moto in which he battled with Pourcel throughout the race.

Tommy Searle kicked off the Hangtown event with an incredible battle for the win with Pourcel. His runner-up effort in moto one looked to be a sign of more to come from the British rider, but misfortune struck in moto two, relegating Searle to a ninth place result.
"I am resting up this week and preparing myself for the next round in Texas," said Searle. "I am very happy with my bike and know that I am capable of running up front and should be on the podium at Texas."
DNA Shred Stix/Star Yamaha
Broc Tickle helped give the Star Racing Yamaha team a strong start to the 2010 season. The longtime Yamaha rider continued what has been a breakout season by finishing seventh overall at Hangtown. Teammates Max Anstie and Martin Davalos finished just outside the top 10 in 11^th and 12^th, respectively and will look to move up this weekend at Freestone.
Troy Lee Designs/Lucas Oil Honda
Wil Hahn's first moto of 2010 didn't go like he had hoped with a 13^th place result, but after grabbing the holeshot in moto two and leading early on, he showed his impressive start to the season in supercross wasn't a fluke. After a sixth place effort in the final moto, Hahn brought home eighth overall.
