AURORA, Ill. – As the penultimate round of the 2010 AMA Arenacross Series looms just a couple days away from Dayton, Ohio’s Nutter Center, the world’s best arenacross competitors prepare for the 11th round of bar-banging action before one of the most devoted crowds in the U.S.

The 2010 season has been a true test of resiliency as all 12 rounds of the season are being run consecutively without a single weekend off. While some riders have succumbed to the challenge of such an action-packed season and the intense nature of arenacross competition, one team has stood above the rest, putting together what is likely the most dominating season in the history of the AMA Arenacross Series.

Babbitt’s Monster Energy/TiLUBE Kawasaki, featuring Tyler Bowers, Josh Demuth and Chad Johnson have put together a remarkable season both as a team and individually. Bowers is the AMA Arenacross class points leader, boasting a series-leading nine victories. Demuth follows him from the runner-up spot in the standings, showcasing five wins of his own. Johnson rounds out the top three in the championship, holding a single win to his credit in 2010. As a team, at least one member of the Babbitt’s team has captured a spot on the podium in every race this season and a Babbitt’s rider has stood atop the podium at all but one race, giving them a winning percentage of 93% with two rounds and three races remaining. It is often said that consistency wins championships and they have proved that better than ever in 2010, effectively solidifying the top three positions in the championship with a 44-point advantage over fourth place.

Luck plays a significant factor throughout the course of an AMA Arenacross Series season where bad luck appears to find every rider in the field at some point. While the Babbitt’s squad has managed to stay relatively unscathed, the 2010 season will come to an unfortunate close for Bowers as an injury suffered in training has sidelined him for the rest of the year. Control of the championship now sits in the hands of Demuth, 19 points behind Bowers. Despite the inopportune injury to him, Bowers has still established an incredible points margin and will finish no worse than third in the championship, further strengthening just how dominant the Babbitt’s team has been this season.

While a bit of a let-down will loom over the final three races of the season thanks to Bowers’ absence, the Babbitt’s AMA Arenacross class team has risen to the occasion each and every week and the success the program has achieved doesn’t stop at the premier class. The Babbitt’s-backed GPF Kawasaki team in the AMA Arenacross Lites class has also set the standard throughout the season. While the challenge presented to the pair of GPF riders A.J. Catanzaro and Daniel Aulsaybrook throughout 2010 has been stronger, two of the youngest riders on the circuit, each of whom are racing the entire season for the first time, have answered the call and each sits in position to claim the respective AMA Arenacross Lites Regional Championships.

The AMA Arenacross Lites Eastern Regional Championship concludes on Saturday night and fresh off his first career victory last weekend, Aulsaybrook sits just four points out of the lead. With the amount of momentum he garnered from his latest outing, it would be hard to doubt his ability and determination to overcome that deficit.

In the AMA Arenacross Lites Western Regional Championship, Catanzaro has four overall wins to his credit in 2010 and leads the standings by 20 points with just one round and two races to go next weekend from Denver. Over the last few weeks, Catanzaro has been the hottest rider in the series and at just 16 years of age, the rookie is amassing one of the most impressive inaugural seasons ever.

With at least one member from the Babbitt’s Monster Energy/TiLUBE Kawasaki team guaranteed to win the premier class championship and a great opportunity for each GPF/Babbitt’s Kawasaki rider to take home the Lites Regional titles, Babbitt’s-backed Kawasaki’s are in prime position to make 2010 a clean sweep of arenacross prestige, a feat that has never been accomplished.

This weekend, the intimate and exciting action of the AMA Arenacross Series will be showcased at the Ervin J. Nutter Center on the campus of Wright State University. Serving as southwest Ohio’s premier sports and entertainment complex, the Nutter Center is home to NCAA Division I Wright State Raiders athletics and the ECHL’s Dayton Bombers hockey team.

Opened in 1990 and named for famous Ohioan Ervin J. Nutter, the main arena of the center seats a maximum of 12,000, but the facility also houses four basketball courts, a recreation running track, a fitness center, classrooms, and 60,000 square feet of exhibit space.

The action commences for the Dayton Arenacross Saturday at 7:00 p.m. Amateur Day concludes an exciting weekend of action on Sunday, beginning at 10 a.m.

Arenacross Notebook: Youngstown Ohio

AURORA, Ill. – Through five rounds and eight races of the 2010 AMA Arenacross Series season, Babbitt’s Monster Energy/Ti Lube Kawasaki’s Tyler Bowers has been the rider to beat in the premier AMA Arenacross class, posting six victories – including a five-race winning streak. This weekend, the series heads to Youngstown, Ohio and the Covelli Centre for the first time since 2008.

In recent years, Ohio has served as a hotbed for the sport of arenacross. In a state known as the birthplace of aviation pioneers, it is no wonder that so many high-flying riders in the AMA Arenacross Series hail from the Buckeye State. With hard winters and sparse riding opportunities during most of the year, dirt-bike riders in Ohio go indoors for competition and learn a heightened sense of bike control that translates into every discipline in motocross.

This season, five of the series’ top riders call Ohio home but many more possess Ohio roots. The Ohio army is led by reigning series champion Jeff Gibson, who hails from Thornville. A veteran motocross competitor for many years, Gibson joined the AMA Arenacross Series for the first time last season and he quickly acclimated himself to the intimate, technical competition, recalling the many indoor events he competed in when he was younger.

Another veteran rider who grew up in Ohio is Gibson’s Tuf Honda teammate Brock Sellards, from Sherrodsville. A perennial front-runner and championship candidate, Sellards is a name synonymous with the sport. His ability to make a late-season push is uncanny and now that the season is reaching its halfway point, eyes will be on Sellards as he prepares for his annual charge in the second half.

Another well-known face and past champion Josh Demuth may call Texas home these days, but his blood is in Ohio, born and raised in Dover. Demuth is one of the most successful riders in the history of the AMA Arenacross Series and a significant contributor to his success is that, like so many of his peers, he grew up competing indoors during the winter months, honing his craft on small, technical tracks.

Perhaps the biggest commonality between all three of these competitors is that each possessed the dream and the passion to become successful at the supercross level, competing for a number of years at the pinnacle of the sport but only achieving moderate success. Now, each rider is writing their own legacy in the discipline that kicked-off their careers, capturing numerous race wins and accolades along the way. For each rider, the AMA Arenacross Series has served as somewhat of a homecoming and each has found a place in the heart of the sport and a genuine appreciation for the high level of competition the series provides.

In addition to the veterans, the Ohio youth movement in the AMA Arenacross Series is led by the up-and-coming Spinechillers/Storm Lake Honda trio of Nathan Skaggs, of Chillicothe, Willy Browning, of Pleasantville, and Zach Ames, of Prospect. Each rider is a representative of not only the youth movement within Ohio, but the surge in the AMA Arenacross Series as well. Each rider holds the potential to be future stars in the sport with both Skaggs and Browning achieving early success while Ames is on the verge of breaking through into a consistent challenger.

The Covelli Centre is the state-of-the-art home of the USHL’s Youngstown Phantom’s and is a short drive from Pittsburgh. The arena opened in 2005 and has played host to several entertainment acts since, including the AMA Arenacross Series back in 2008.

The arena has an occupancy of 5,700 and is seen as the center point of the rejuvenation of the Youngstown area.

The first gates drop on the Youngstown Arenacross Friday, February 12 beginning at 7:30 p.m. followed by another night of action on Saturday the 13th at 7:30 p.m. The action concludes with Amateur Day on Sunday, beginning at 10 a.m.

San Francisco SX Notes

AURORA, Ill. – AMA Supercross class points leader Ryan Dungey, of Belle Plaine, Minn., brings a 15-point lead into tomorrow night’s Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, at San Francisco’s AT&T Park and a two-race win streak.

Since 1974, the first rider to win two AMA Supercross class main events in a season has gone on to win the championship 17 times. Dungey, who is riding in his first full season as a rookie in the AMA Supercross class will compete for his third consecutive win this season.

"To get our second win was unbelievable and I can’t thank the guys on the team enough,” said Dungey, who rides for the Rockstar/Makita Suzuki team. “Now, I'm just going to try to carry the momentum and remember its one race at a time. I also want to have fun, enjoy it, and let the rest come. I enjoy San Francisco, and last year they did a great job on the track with preparation, so I’m looking forward to the race on Saturday."

Rockstar/Makita/Suzuki’s Team Manager was confident that Dungey could content for the podium positions coming into the season and is impressed with his early success in the AMA Supercross class.

"I knew going into the season that Ryan was a podium guy. I was confident in him, and he’s doing even better than just getting on the podium, said DeCoster. “He’s the most consistent and he’s winning. At the same time, the team needs to keep its feet on the ground and do one race at a time. We’re doing well, but the championship is a long ways off. We cannot get carried away and think this is it. It’s only the third race out of 17."

Defending AMA Supercross class champion James Stewart, who rides for the San Manuel Yamaha team is no stranger to winning in San Francisco as he is the only rider in history to win in San Francisco in the AMA Supercross and AMA Supercross Lites classes. Last weekend in Anaheim marked only the sixth time in his career that he’s finished third in AMA Supercross class racing.

Monster Energy Kawasaki heads to San Francisco hoping to get back on the podium with Ryan Villopoto, of Poulsbo, Wash. After avoiding a mud race in Anaheim, Villopoto hopes the weather cooperates again in San Francisco.

“I hope it isn’t a mud race,” said Villopoto. “We had a great track at Anaheim and anytime we can avoid mud is best. I’ve been working on a few things this week and I’m ready to challenge for the win.”

In the AMA Supercross Lites class, Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Jake Weimer, of Rupert, Idaho, is looking to stay perfect after he has won the first three races of the season.

“I’m just staying in my routine,” said Weimer. “I want to keep doing the same things and stay successful. There really is no secret to winning, you just have to work hard and be ready to take advantage when you can. So I’m just going to keep putting in the laps during the week to stay on top of the box.”

Weimer’s teammate Josh Hansen had his best finish of the season at Anaheim and he is looking to parlay that into a trip to the podium this week.

“I’m right there and I know I can win,” said Hansen. “It is time for me to get on the podium and put together a complete race. I’ve been fastest in practice. I’ve grabbed a couple of holeshots and I’ve won a couple of my heats but I need to put all that together in the main event.”

Honda Red Bull Racing’s Andrew Short equaled his best showing of the season last week, coming from behind to finish in fourth place aboard his CRF450R, elevating him to a tie for third in the AMA Supercross class points chase.

“I’m really happy with the way I rode at Anaheim and I definitely feel like the overall result didn’t reflect my effort put in,” said Short. “I didn’t get a great start and had to work really hard to come from behind. Considering all the rain and lack of track time in the lead-up to the event, I’m definitely proud of the way I rode and my result. I share third place in the series points, which is a great place to be heading into in San Francisco, and again they’re predicting a wet race—we’ll see.”

GEICO Powersports Honda’s Kevin Windham finished the first lap in 13th place and put in a gutsy effort to take fifth place. Millsaps got a mid-pack start and battled hard to reach as high as sixth place but then dropped two spots to finish eighth.

Last week, Troy Lee Designs Honda’s Wil Hahn put in the best race of his season, finishing in second position. GEICO Powersports Honda’s Trey Canard rallied aboard his CRF250R to overcome his slow—outside the top ten—start, taking the checkers a close third.

“I put myself in a tough spot by not getting a good start,” said Canard. “I knew I had to ride a smart race if I was going to catch the riders in front and just kept chipping away to eventually get third. I’m happy to be second in the series points after three rounds an looking forward to San Francisco this weekend.”

Cole Seely scored his best finish of the 2010 season on his Troy Lee Designs Honda CRF250R, by grabbing fifth spot while GEICO Powersports Honda’s Blake made the best of his mid-pack start to take eighth place.

Supercross made its début at AT&T Park back on January 23, 2003 when Ricky Carmichael won the AMA Supercross class and Stewart won the AMA Supercross Lites class. Carmichael holds the record for the most wins at AT&T Park with three. In the AMA Supercross Lites class, Nathan Ramsey is the only rider to earn two wins in San Francisco.

CBS Sports will air the AMA Supercross class race on Sunday, January 31 at Noon EST and SPEED will air the AMA Supercross Lites class on Sunday, January 31 at 10:00 p.m. EST.

2010 AMA Arenacross Notes: Kansas City

AURORA, Ill. – As the 2010 AMA Arenacross Series enters its fourth round of the season this weekend and makes its return to Kansas City’s Kemper Arena, the headlining story a quarter of the way through remains Babbitt’s Monster Energy/TiLube Kawasaki’s Tyler Bowers. After a total of six races, Bowers has grabbed the win all but one, including the last five in a row.

Currently, the Kentucky native holds a 24-point lead over his teammate Chad Johnson, who coincidentally is the only other race winner in 2010, and appears to be in no hurry to slow down the momentum. Johnson has without a doubt been the second-best rider in the series, working his way through the field on more than one occasion en route to a solid podium result. If the two-time champion can garner some consistency on his starts, he could give Bowers a run for his money.

Despite the nearly full-race advantage over the field, Bowers still has a full nine rounds and 13 races before the season comes to an end, meaning there are 325 main event laps in which he needs to avoid trouble. In a discipline where the racing is so tightly contested and on-track space is at a premium, trouble tends to find a rider at some point. However, if Bowers continues to capitalize on his strong starts, it will be hard to catch him.

Saturday night’s showdown also marks the opening round of the 2010 AMA Arenacross Lites Western Regional Championship. After six exciting races of Eastern Regional competition that produced a parity-heavy five different winners, the youth movement from the West Coast takes center stage in what is sure to be an equally unpredictable title fight.

The AMA Arenacross Series’ last visit to Kemper Arena was in 2008. After a year hiatus, the world’s most intimate form of dirt-bike racing returns with one of the most talented fields in history and the resurgence of the 450cc motorcycle in the premier AMA Arenacross class.

Located in the heart of the country, Kemper Arena has been a staple of the AMA Arenacross Series for many years. As one of the most well-known venues in the country, it is also one of the largest in terms of capacity on the series schedule, capable of holding 19,500 fans.

The arena rose to fame thanks to its illustrious résumé of college basketball competitions. The nearby University of Kansas Jayhawks call Kemper Arena their second home while the NCAA has hosted the Final Four at the arena as well.

Since opening in 1974, Kemper Arena has become one of the landmark venues in the middle portion of the United States. In addition to numerous sporting events, it has also played host to several of the world’s most famous musical artists like Elvis, Kiss, AC/DC, Michael Jackson and Garth Brooks. On Saturday night, it will transform into a man-made dirt battleground, showcasing some of the most exciting racing on the planet.

“Nuclear Cowboyz: Behind the Scenes” to Premiere February 1st on FUEL TV

AURORA, Ill. – Feld Motor Sports announced today that FUEL TV will air “Nuclear Cowboyz: Behind the Scenes,” a look at the making of the world’s greatest freestyle motocross production, on Monday, February 1 at 8:00 p.m. EST. This 30-minute show captures everything from the Nuclear Cowgirlz™ dance tryouts in Los Angeles, to the vigorous two-week rehearsals at the LA Sports Arena, where the first-ever North American choreographed freestyle motocross tour was assembled.

Before the tour kicked off at Pittsburgh’s Mellon Arena on January 2, FUEL TV captured the long days and hard nights as the action-packed production began to crystallize. The world’s top riders, led by Nate Adams and Jeremy “Twitch” Stenberg, paved the way for the new era of freestyle motocross with never before-seen sequences. AX Heads to Baltimore AMA Supercross Great Ezra Lusk Headed to AMA Arenacross Series

AURORA, Ill. (January 12, 2010) – After a memorable opening weekend in Grand Rapids, Mich., the AMA Arenacross Series continues its nationwide trek throughout the 2010 season this weekend at Baltimore’s 1st Mariner Arena and round two of the 12-race season. Former AMA supercross star and racing veteran Ezra Lusk is prepared to come out of retirement and make a full-time return to the sport he loves on a more intimate and in-your-face style of racing when he joins the AMA Arenacross Series.

Achieving success in the big stadiums of AMA Supercross throughout the ‘90s, Lusk is returning to competition in the action-packed, technical confines of the AMA Arenacross Series for 2010. As a member of the dominant Tuf Honda team that has won the last three AMA Arenacross class titles, Lusk will join teammates Brock Sellards and reigning AMA Arenacross Series champion Jeff Gibson for his official series debut at the legendary Kemper Arena in Kansas City, Mo., January 30-31 for the fourth of 12 rounds this season.

An injury suffered while preparing for the 2010 AMA Arenacross Series forced Lusk to sit on the sidelines as the series got underway, but now the Georgia native affectionately known as Yogi is back and ready to make his first foray into the bar-banging, high-energy competition of the world’s most exciting and intimate form of motorcycle racing.

After a stellar 2010 debut at their team’s hometown race, respective Friday and Saturday night race winners Chad Johnson and Tyler Bowers lead their competitors, sitting atop the standings for Babbitt’s Monster Energy/TiLube Kawasaki.

Behind them, a potent lineup of challengers await their opportunity to climb atop the podium, including the series’ latest all-star team from reigning three-time series champion Tuf Racing. The 2010 Tuf Honda effort is led by defending series champion Jeff Gibson, who posted a runner-up finish on the opening night of action but suffered his worst performance since racing the AMA Arenacross Series full time last season on Saturday, failing to make the main event. Joining Gibson is perennial championship bridesmaid Brock Sellards along with former supercross star Ezra Lusk who returns from retirement to make his AMA Arenacross Series debut.

Gibson and Sellards were the top two finishers in the AMA Arenacross Series last season and Sellards brings a familiarity with Tuf Honda, racing for the team in 2007. With success and experience in the hands of the riders wearing the number one and two plates, Lusk’s adjustment to the series should be smooth when he joins the 2010 season at the third round in Hampton, Va. Lusk is recovering from a testing injury, forcing him to miss the first two rounds of the year.

Last year in Baltimore, Gibson established himself as a title favorite, extending his early season points lead with a Friday night win while Spinechillers/Storm Lake Honda’s Nathan Skaggs continued what would be a breakout season in 2009 by capturing the victory on Saturday.

In the always unpredictable AMA Arenacross Lites class, a pair of premier AMA Arenacross class competitors took advantage of making the adjustment to a new season as Josh Demuth and Gray Davenport took the wins on Friday and Saturday night, respectively.

This weekend marks the second round of the Lites Eastern Regional championship, currently led by Grand Rapids’ Friday night winner and defending Central Regional champion Kurt McCabe.

CBS to Air Season Preview of 2010 Monster Energy Supercross Championship

AURORA, Ill. – Feld Motor Sports announced today that CBS Sports will air a one-hour season preview of the 2010 Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, Saturday, December 26 at 2:30 p.m. EST.

“This is a great way to showcase the 2010 Monster Energy Supercross championship to a network audience,” said Todd Jendro, senior director of operations, Feld Motor Sports. “Last year’s racing was epic and with the emergence of guys like Ryan Villopoto, Josh Grant and Ryan Dungey, we have an amazing season in store and CBS Sports will capture it all December 26 at 2:30 EST.”

CBS Sports will take an in-depth look at the defending AMA Supercross champion James Stewart’s quest to earn his third career championship while holding off rival Chad Reed and a host of up-and-coming riders that are eager to steal Stewart’s thunder. After an 11-win season in 2010, Stewart returns to the San Manuel Yamaha team in pursuit of excellence.

Former two-time AMA Supercross class champion Reed will switch from the Factory Suzuki team to the Monster Energy Kawasaki team. A three-time race winner in 2009, Reed chased Stewart down to the final stop of the season at Las Vegas’ Sam Boyd Stadium in what is considered the greatest season in the sport’s history. Within the one-hour show, Reed gives fans a unique perspective on his 2010 campaign.

Reed joins AMA Supercross class sophomore Ryan Villopoto under the Monster Energy Kawasaki tent. Villopoto earned two victories in 2009 and is the only rider in history to beat Stewart in a race that he did not crash.

After winning the Anaheim 1 race last year, Josh Grant earned valuable experience in the premier class and will be prepared for battle when the gate drops on the 2010 season January 9. Moving up from the AMA Supercross Lites class is Ryan Dungey who successfully captured the Western Regional title last year. Dungey raced in select AMA Supercross class races in 2008, finishing as high as second at the Minneapolis stop.
