Monster Energy @ the X Games

Courtesy of Monster Energy
July 25, 2010 – Corona, CA – Expect non-stop action as Monster Energy athletes hit events across Moto, BMX, Skate and Rally at X Games 16, beginning this Thursday, July 29 through Sunday, August 1. It’s all going down center stage in the L.A. Memorial Coliseum and in and around STAPLES Center in Los Angeles, CA.
A total of eight Monster riders are competing in Moto events.  In Best Trick, Kyle Loza will be defending as the three-time Moto X Best Trick Gold medalist—after a recent wrist surgery, could we see the bike flip and the first-ever four-peat in the event? He’ll face Monster Energy Teammate Blake “Bilko” Williams, an always-exciting rider with loads of swagger.
Hitting the track as defending 2008-2009 Super X Gold Medalist will be John Hansen, who’s playing triple duty as a competitor in Super X, Speed & Style, and Best Whip—it should be a great show. Also lining up in Super X is Nick Wey, a rider with speed and perseverance that’s always a force on the track.
A methodical trick machine, Nate Adams will hit the Speed & Style course as the event returns to the X line-up. He’ll also do work in Freestyle Motocross, joined by the defending gold-medalist “Bilko” and serious threat Adam Jones, who’s already won at X Fighters this year.
Sarah Price will battle as she combines speed and rhythm on July 29 in Super X Women, a semi-new event that’s gaining more interest, fans, and excitement constantly—these girls are powerhouses!
In BMX Vert the number one threat will be Monster’s Jamie Bestwick, who’s often called the best BMX Vert rider ever and is a five-time X Games Vert gold medalist.
In BMX Park two time X Games gold medalist and four-time medalist Scotty Cranmer will be back for more hardware, but he’ll have to contend with the legendary Dave Mirra, a medal-collector who’s been practicing hard lately and contest-mainstay Ryan Guettler.  Andy Buckworth, a young buck from Australia with loads of flip variations like the double front, will battle in BMX Big Air.
Mirra and Ken Block are playing double duty behind the wheel as they both compete in Rally Racing and the all-new Super Rally, which sees four cars on the track at the same time. Mirra, known for his legendary BMX career, has become a threat as he pushed a different pedal to the metal. And Block, now a WRC driver, will be hot off the line and nimble through the turns as he seeks redemption and his first-ever Gold in the event he’s medaled in every single year.
Expect more major action as Skate Big Air and Skate Big Air Rail Jam competitors take to the MegaRamp inside the iconic Coliseum. Jake Brown will come in with big plans after the memorable gold medal last year and perhaps more-memorable slam two years ago, while his Monster teammate Pierre Luc Gagnon (PLG) will translate his vert skills and smoothness to the Big Air ramp. The Quebec tech-wizard will also compete in Skate Vert Trick (as the defending Gold medalist) and also Skate vert alongside Alex Perelson, a young force on the ramp with a proven 900. Perelson will also look to make a big impression as he competes in Skate Park.
Visit monsterenergy.com for more on all these athletes as they compete in X Games 16, plus the coverage of Monster’s activities during the four-day event.

Què viva Red Bull X-Fighters!

Courtesy of Red Bull
Què viva Red Bull X-Fighters!

Since the victory over Holland in the final of the FIFA World Cup in South Africa, the entire country of Spain has been in permanent party mode, and with the fourth stop of the Red Bull X-Fighters World Tour 2010 coming to Madrid’s Plaza de Toros de Las Ventas on July 22 and 23, the celebrations are set to continue. Among the favorites for the win at the traditional two-day event in the most beautiful bullfighting ring on the planet will be not only overall leader Andrè Villa and local hero and fans’ favorite Dany Torres, but also the international stars such as Levi Sherwood from New Zealand and Australia's Robbie Maddison.

MADRID (ESP) - The fact that the locals in Madrid know how to have a good time will come as no surprise to the Red Bull X-Fighters, for whom the Spanish capital has become somewhat of a second home as it plays host to the highlight event of the most prestigious FMX tour in the world year after year. On July 22 and 23, the finest freestyle motocross riders on the planet will return once again to the legendary Plaza de Toros de Las Ventas to show why FMX and Madrid simply belong together.

The points situation in the overall standings going into this year’s event is just as close as it was in 2009, with the three stops in Mexico City, Giza and Moscow producing three different winners. Thanks to consistent performances, reigning Red Bull X-Fighters Champion Nate Adams has managed to reduce the gap to standings leader Andrè Villa, winner of the first event of the season in Mexico City, to just 20 points, while his win on Moscow’s legendary Red Square just a few weeks ago means that Levi “Rubber Kid” Sherwood is right back in the fight for the title with 175 points. Hot on his heels are Robbie Maddison and Adam Jones, who impressed at the second stop of the season in Egypt to take the win under the gaze of the Great Sphinx of Giza. The situation is so tight that a win could see any one of the riders in the top five assume the overall lead after the event in Spain.

Yet, when it comes to the passionate Spanish fans packed into Las Ventas, there is one man who is a favorite for the win year after year – local hero Dany Torres. Pushed on by tens of thousands of Spaniards screaming their lungs out, Torres always manages to step it up a level in front of his home fans and took his first win of the 2009 season last year in Madrid. Following an operation on his broken hand, the 23-year-old is raring to go after making his comeback in Moscow just a few weeks ago and will be looking for a repeat of his incredible victory in 2009. Earlier this week, Torres took to the air in the bullfighting ring in the old Spanish town of Chinchon, south of Madrid (see attached images).

Qualifying and the Wild Card event will take place this evening, while the World Tour competition is scheduled to take place on Friday evening in front of a sell-out crowd of 25,000 fans.

The live event webcast on Friday, July 23 will be at 4:30 p.m. ET / 1:30 p.m. PT on Red Bull Web TV at www.redbullxfighters.com

2010 RED BULL X-FIGHTERS WORLD TOUR: PUNCH YOUR TICKET AT THE FIRST-EVER RED BULL X-FIGHTERS RANKING SESSION

Courtesy of Red Bull
2010 RED BULL X-FIGHTERS WORLD TOUR:
PUNCH YOUR TICKET AT THE FIRST-EVER RED BULL X-FIGHTERS RANKING SESSION
The search is on for undiscovered FMX talent to compete alongside the world’s best riders
At the Red Bull Compound

Santa Monica, Calif. (November 3, 2009) – The 2010 Red Bull X-Fighters World Tour will kick-start its fourth season in February at the Red Bull Compound, an exclusive, private training facility located deep in the mountains north of Los Angeles. For the first time in the history of Red Bull X-Fighters, riders will have to battle it out and earn their spots in the world’s most prestigious freestyle motocross series at the official Ranking Session.

Only the top four athletes from the 2009 season automatically qualified for the 2010 World Tour, leaving six spots up for grabs. The secured spots go to 2009 champion Nate Adams (USA), Robbie Maddison (AUS), Eigo Sato (JPN) and Mat Rebeaud (SUI). The Red Bull X-Fighters Ranking Session will be held at the Red Bull Compound between February 2 and February 10, where the greatest collection of the world’s best FMX athletes will battle it out for the additional six coveted spots on the World Tour.
GLOBAL TALENT MEETS (LEGIT) YOUTUBE TALENT
Only 30 riders will be selected to participate in the Ranking Session. If you have not previously competed in a Red Bull X-Fighters, Dew Tour or X Games event and think you have what it takes to hang with the best FMX athletes in the world, submit a 90-second video of your best performance to www.redbullxfighters.com by December 1, 2009.

“I'm excited about being invited to compete in the Red Bull X-Fighters championship again in 2010,” said Maddison. “X-Fighters has the best riders in the world throwing down the gnarliest runs in the most amazing locations around the world. I know the level will be higher again this year, so I'm busy learning fresh stuff for the new comp season.”

The world’s premier, most-progressive freestyle motocross series demands a high degree of skill, as indicated by the minimum requirement needed to qualify for the Ranking Session: “You’ll need to have at least one backflip combination in your portfolio,” said Tour Director Tes Sewell.

Another new milestone for the 2010 Red Bull X-Fighters World Tour will include two wildcard entries at each stop to complete the field of the tour, which will start in April and run to September at spectacular, iconic locations across the globe, which will be announced shortly.

Courage, talent and self-confidence are the key ingredients, as 17-year-old Levi Sherwood of New Zealand demonstrated last year. After defending champion Mat Rebeaud was sidelined with an injury, he discovered the talented young Kiwi rider, and Sherwood, now known as the “Rubber Kid,” paid Rebeaud back by knocking him out of the competition a few days later on his way to winning the 2009 season opener in Mexico City.

American Freestyle Motocross Association Established

Press Release from AFXMA

Athletes and Action Sports Leaders Take Proactive Role in Promoting Safety Regulations and Cultivating Overall Growth in Freestyle Motocross and Affiliated Events

Irvine, CA - The American Freestyle Motocross Association (AFMXA), a collective of Freestyle Motocross riders and action sports industry leaders, today announced its official launch as an organization established to manage, protect and develop the sport of freestyle motocross at both the professional and recreational levels. Inspired in memory of American freestyle rider, X Games gold medalist and Metal Mulisha team member, Jeremy Lusk, the AFMXA is dedicated to improving rider safety, preparation and education through programs and services that will assist athletes in improving their skills and experience in the sport. Additionally, the Association is committed to increasing awareness around medical treatment, emergency response planning and training at events worldwide.

With interest from recreational riders, corporate partners and action sports companies around the globe, the AFMXA was organized in an effort to create a unified voice at all sanctioned and non-sanctioned freestyle motocross events, parks, facilities and demonstrations; and implement a safer environment for athletes. The Association will encourage neck braces for riders; report on standards for suitable weather conditions and proper ramp landings at events; assist with providing trained on-site and on-call medical assistance; and prepare safety policies and emergency response plans. In addition to providing guidelines for safer practices, the AFMXA will host an annual awards ceremony to recognize top athletes and companies for their accomplishments and influence on the sport.

The Association's advisory board consists of prominent figures in the action sports and medical industries, including Metal Mulisha founder and most decorated Freestyle Motocross rider in X Games history, Brian Deegan; CEO of La Jolla Group, Toby Bost; ESPN's Lizz Leach; Ryan Hagy, Cameron Steele, Dr. Pete Katsyiannis, and Dr. Gus Gialamas, among others.

"With the tragic death of Jeremy Lusk, it became clear that this sport, which has grown significantly over the last few years, needed an Association to develop and oversee stricter safety guidelines," said Toby Bost. "The AFMXA works to define racing rules and evolve the sport for athletes and supporters. As corporate sponsors, it's our responsibility to do more than just put our product on riders. We need to be activists for the industry as a whole -- and that means being proactively involved in establishing processes that enable freestyle moto to keep growing."

"The AFMXA is the voice of all freestyle riders and the time has come for us to properly organize our sport -- it starts with safety," commented Brian Deegan. "It's also about time that athletes and industry leaders are recognized for their achievements and dedication. I look forward to the positive changes this Association and its members are going to make for freestyle motocross."

Earlier this year, the Lusk Legacy Foundation was established to help improve overall safety in the sport, protect the livelihoods of riders and their families, and provide them with legal, medical and financial consultation and representation. The Lusk Legacy Foundation has been named the official charitable organization for the AFMXA.

On July 30th at 5pm PST, ESPN will broadcast a special presentation on Jeremy Lusk and the AFMXA. For further information, visit www.afmxa.com.

Red Bull High Rise: Ronnie Renner Aims to go Higher, this time in Chicago

Press Release from Red Bull
CHICAGO, IL (June 30, 2009) – Chicago’s renowned skyscrapers will share the sky with motocross superstar Ronnie Renner on Saturday, July 25. The Windy City will watch as Renner attempts to break his own Guinness World Record for the highest air ever attained on a motorcycle at Red Bull High Rise. He will go sky-high at Butler Field prior to Chicago’s annual Venetian Night, adding a new spin to an old tradition.

Renner is a respected freestyle motocross veteran whose credentials include a gold medal in Step-Up at the 2007 Summer X Games and the Step-Up world record. He set his original quarterpipe big air world record by jumping an amazing 59 feet, 2 inches in July, 2008. In 2009, he will attempt to beat this record by launching sky-high onto a massive custom-built steel landing ramp measuring 64 feet wide and 30 feet tall.

Why Chicago? Why not? “While I was thrilled with being able to set the initial world record last year, I know I can push myself to achieve a better height, and Chicago is one of the best places to be in the summer,” said Renner. “Plus it added another component to my training regimen – I need to train my stomach to prepare for Chicago cuisine; especially the deep dish pizza!”

Renner has been training at the exclusive Red Bull Compound in Southern California in preparation for his big night on a modular quarterpipe built specifically for him. The Compound is a one-of-a-kind training facility that Red Bull provides its athletes to equip them with the support they need in order to achieve their wildest dreams.

WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF RED BULL
Renner’s jump completes yet another amazing chapter of world-firsts, following the record-shattering performances of fellow motocross sensation Robbie Maddison and BMX star Kevin Robinson. Maddison jumped the length of a football field in front of thousands on New Year’s Eve 2007, clearing 322 feet in Las Vegas. Nate Adams wins Red Bull X-Fighters Texas

Press Release from Red Bull

FORT WORTH, Texas (June 27, 2009) – Just as the setting sun was calming the blazing daytime heat, eleven of the world’s best freestyle motocross riders turned it right back up at Red Bull X-Fighters Texas. Nate Adams defeated defending event winner and 2008 series champion, Mat Rebeaud before a capacity crowd of more than 22,000 fans in the Historic Fort Worth Stockyards. Speaking of historic, Australian rider Cam Sinclair nailed the first-ever double backflip in a competition run, sending the fans into a frenzy. Thomas Pagès of France suffered a hip injury in an unsuccessful attempt at the first front flip in a competition run.

“Red Bull X-Fighters is the very top of FMX,” said Adams. “There is nothing like winning against such world-class athletes, and in front of my fellow Americans. I’m really happy I am healthy and riding well. It was all-around a great weekend for me.”

“There has never been a double backflip in competition before,” said Sinclair, who suffered bruised ankles from the hard landings. “I don’t really care about the fact I was eliminated in the semis – I’m just happy I’m more or less healthy.”

Japan’s Eigo Sato now leads the overall standing of the international series with 215 points, closely followed by Rebeaud (210 points) and Robbie Maddison (145 points).

The scene was authentic Texas, replete with Rodeo Queens, bull riding and even the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, who many say contributed to the heat. Supercross legend and current TORC off-road truck driver Ricky Johnson got the evening started by tearing into the purpose-built venue with a special passenger – Fort Worth Mayor Michael Moncrief, who welcomed the fans to the second-straight Red Bull X-Fighters held in his town, followed by members of the Red Bull Air Force, who made a high-speed drop-in onto the course.

The course was a genuine challenge for the riders, presenting them with more than 15 different jump combinations, thanks to the 850 truckloads of dirt that were sculpted in the three weeks leading up to the event.

Red Bull X-Fighters Texas Results:
1. Nate Adams (USA) 100 points
2. Mat Rebeaud (SUI) 80 points
3. Cameron Sinclair (AUS) 65 points
4. Eigo Sato (JPN) 55 points
5. Robbie Maddison (AUS) 45 points
6. Jeremy Stenberg (USA) 35 points
7. Dany Torres (SPA) 30 points
8. Adam Jones (USA) 25 points
9. Andre Villa (NOR) 20 points
10. Thomas Pages (FRA) 15 points
11. Jeff Kargola (USA) 10 points

The Texas stop is the third of five international Red Bull X-Fighters events in 2009, starting with the traditional kick-off at the 45,000-seat Monumental Plaza de Toros in Mexico City in March. Calgary hosted Canada’s first Red Bull X-Fighters on May 30 at the Calgary Stampede. Next up is the Las Ventas bullring in Madrid, which will enjoy its eighth-consecutive year with a stop on July 16-17. The series wraps up with a visit to London’s Battersea Power Station on August 22.

Red Bull X-Fighters was created in 2001, debuting in Valencia, Spain at the bullring where the legendary ‘Mad’ Mike Jones claimed victory. Since that historic night, Red Bull X-Fighters events have taken place in the world’s most iconic locations, including the famous bullrings in Madrid and Mexico City, Slane Castle in Ireland, the Sambodromo in Rio de Janeiro, a massive stone quarry in Wuppertal, Germany and the Stadion X-Lecia in Warsaw, Poland.

Red Bull X-Fighters Texas will be broadcast on ABC on Sunday, July 19 at 1:30 p.m. ET / 10:30 a.m., immediately following the British Open golf tournament.
