KTM Names Tye Hames Winner of the Rider for a Day Competition

Michael Sleeter and his KTM Factory Services/One Industries Team are proud to announce Tye Hames as the winner of the Rider for a Day contest at the opening round of the MX Sports AMA Motocross Series at Prairie City Raceway.

With over 70 entries to the competition, Tye Hames came out the winner. "We are excited to add Tye Hames as a member to our KTM Factory Services/One Industries Team for the opening round at Hangtown," remarked Mike Sleeter. "We were looking for a rider who was capable of qualifying for an outdoor national and with our help could finish above his expectations." In Hames case, his goal is to finish inside the top 20 in order to score national points at the first round of the season.

Hames received notice this morning of his new ride. "I am really excited to ride the KTM 450 SX-F. I was stoked when I found out about this competition because it gives a privateer like me a chance to ride on equipment that is far better than I can afford. I hope that my results at Hangtown will impress the crowd and hopefully help me to gain more exposure and potential sponsors."

Hames, a Palmdale, Ca native, has been racing professionally for four years. He competed in the west coast Outdoor Motocross Nationals in 2009 and plans to race the entire circuit for 2010. "I think this is a great opportunity that KTM is giving to the privateer riders. I feel more than fortunate to have been selected for such an amazing opportunity," remarked Hames.

As the winner of the contest, Hames gets to race a fully prepped KTM Factory Services 450 SX-F, his own mechanic and will be provided One Industries gear from head to toe, Von Zipper Goggles, Alpinestars boots and DVS shoes. His expenses for the weekend will be paid for by the team. He will truly be treated as a Factory rider for the weekend.

Fans can look for the orange #732 bike of Hames as the third member of the KTM Factory Services/One Industries Team. He will be joined by his teammates Sean Borkenhagen competing in the Lites class and Mike Sleeter competing in the 450 class aboard his KTM 250SX two-stroke race machine.

Amateur National Arenacross Championship This Weekend

AURORA, Ill. (May 6, 2010) – Since the 2010 AMA Arenacross Series wrapped up over one month ago, hundreds of the world’s fastest amateur arenacross competitors have been anxiously awaiting and training for their opportunity to compete for a national championship at the Amateur National Arenacross Championship (ANAC). This weekend, the ANAC will commence with its inaugural event from Las Vegas’ Sam Boyd Stadium, sharing the spotlight with the season finale of Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship.

Qualifications for the 2010 ANAC took place throughout the AMA Arenacross Series season from January through March across five regions: North, South, East, West and Central. The highly competitive and highly popular amateur days produced stellar racing and has culminated with one of the most talented fields in the history of the ANAC.

On Saturday and Sunday, 23 classes will line up on the gate in an all out battle for a coveted national championship. The action kicks-off on Saturday afternoon, before the night show of the Monster Energy Supercross finale as 20 of the nation’s fastest riders in the 65cc (7-11) and 85cc (9-15) will put on a show for the capacity crowd inside Sam Boyd Stadium in what is sure to be a memorable pair of main events.

The remaining 21 classes will take to the track on Sunday for an action-packed day of the best amateur arenacross racing in the country. Doors open at 8 a.m. PST while the first gates drop at 10 a.m. PST. TLD Lucas Oil Racing Race Report

On what was undoubtedly one of the most brutally demanding supercross tracks ever built, Troy Lee Designs / Lucas Oil / Honda rider Wil Hahn gritted out a second place finish and moved himself to second in the series standings. His teammate, Cole Seely, toughed out a seventh place finish despite a poor start.

Lining up for the main event it was clear that Hahn meant business. His lap times were good and he knew he was prepared to ride at 100% for the entire fifteen laps. The Young rider from Texas was third coming around the first turn but ran into the back of Trey Canard when he fell in turn two. The mishap dropped him to fifth where he would begin an impressive charge towards the front. By the time he moved into second the leader was already several seconds ahead and the margin was too much for Wil to close. Although he wants a win baldly, Hahn rode well and he was proud of that.

"Man, I really felt like tonight was my night to win," He said after the race. Adding, "I know it's coming... I've been working way too hard not to win one of these. I can't take anything away from (Broc) Tickle though; he rode great tonight. He was flying out there. Next week we'll just get back to work and see if we can get a win in Salt Lake City."

Seely was mired in the pack and lost all of his tear-offs early, forcing him to remove his goggles. The race became about survival for him after that point. Cole would soldier on to a seventh but he was visibly disappointed with the way his night went.

"That definitely wasn't how I wanted the night to go," Cole explained. "All night I just felt tight and like I was fighting the bike. When I reached up on the second lap of the main to pull a tear off and I grabbed all of them, I knew I was in trouble. I tried wiping them as long as I could but I couldn't see a thing. I had to throw them and it made it tough to get close to anyone after that. I need to have a good race next weekend to bounce back from this."

The team will now head to Utah for the final round of the west region series. Wil has a five point lead over Canard and he is nineteen points down on Jake Weimer. It is a long shot to win the title but crazier things have happened.

Phil Nicoletti to Fill in for Tommy Searle

Murrieta, CA – Top performing West Lites Supercross privateer Phil Nicoletti will temporarily fill in for FMF/KTM Factory rider Tommy Searle at the remaining three Supercross rounds

After injuring his shoulder at the beginning of the year, Searle has sat out most of the Supercross season. Once healed during the break in the Lites Series, he began training for the outdoor nationals. “Now that Tommy is on the outdoor bike and after nearly two months training outdoors we decided it would be best to let him make a clean return at the outdoors and give Phil a chance to ride a Factory bike,” reported FMF/KTM Team Manager Casey Lytle. “Phil’s results on his own KTM bike have been quite impressive this season and we would really like to see if we can help him break into the top five.”

If this story sounds familiar, you would be right. The FMF/KTM Factory Team also gave the same opportunity to PJ Larsen at the beginning of the SX season when Searle was originally hurt. Larsen performed well and ended up with a 5th place performance on the bike after only two weeks before heading down under to contest the Australian Motocross National Championship.

Like Larsen, Nicoletti was left without a ride at the beginning of the year and is grateful for the opportunity to ride the remainder of the season on the FMF/KTM Factory bike. “It is amazing to get recognized by a factory team and be given a chance to ride and perform on the best equipment out there. I am looking forward to the last three rounds and will do my best to represent the FMF/KTM team,” commented Nicoletti. “I would love to give a shot out to my sponsors that have helped me get to where I am now, St. Lawrence Radiology, Alessi Racing, Moose, Scott, Twin Air, Renthal, Belray, Varner Motorsports, Dr. Maresca, FMF, MGX Unlimited, Dunlop and Hot Hedz Design.”

HOT Houston Race Recap

There was a great turnout of fans at this weeks venue, Reliant Stadium, and the track conditions and layout would inevitably lead to some great racing.

Heat 1:
When the gate dropped for Heat #1, Honda of Troy was at the front of the pack racing for positions. Sean Lipanovich pulled one of his patented great starts (2nd) and settled into 4th at the end of lap one, while Levi Kilbarger followed suit and was battling for a top 6 position himself. On lap 2, Kilbarger had a miscue in the long table top rhythm section that sent the #412 tumbling. This put him out of the race and into the LCQ. #505 Lipanovich put together a great ride constantly under pressure which netted him some great television coverage and made his transfer directly into the main with a 7th.

Heat 2:
The Houston dirt provided great traction and this allowed the Eleven 10 Mods horsepower to shine. When Willard looked to his left he found Pourcel and when he looked to his right he found Sipes- two of the quickest qualifiers of the timed practice- and when the gate dropped the #92 rocketed out to the front of the pack. Willard nabbed the holeshot and established the lead. Willard put up a great fight with Poucel but gave up the lead on lap 2. Michael was under heavy fire for the entire heat but put in a valiant effort and qualified a solid 5th.

The LCQ start was no different - #412 Kilbarger took the lead from the pack and began to pull away just a bit. Levi held on to the #1 spot for 3 ¾ laps when a slight mistake and a wide line left the door open for Kyle Cunningham. On the next turn, 30 yards from the finish line, Tevin Tapia tried a kamikaze maneuver that would claim himself and Kilbarger, taking them both out of the race and allowing Troy Adams a spot in the Main.

Main Event:
The Guys starts in the main left a little to be desired and they were going to have their work cut out for them. Lipanovich was about midpack, 12th or so and Willard was bringing up the rear in 20th. The main wore on and the competition was fierce. Willard was able to work his way forward trying the entire moto to catch Troy Adams, who is a few points in front of him in the overall points. Lipanovich encountered a few minor issues that stifled his progress. Willard finished an eventual 12th and Lipanovich held on to the 18th spot in the main.

Overall for the season Willard sits 6 points outside of the top 10 in 11th. That is his goal in St Louis, to secure a top 10 overall for the season. Kilbarger has made every main event this season until this weekend and no doubt he will come to do battle in St Louis. He consistently learns from him track encounters and this one will be not different. Lipanovich brings more to the table each and every week and he picks up speed with every second on the race track. #36 of Durham is still on the mend with a slight shoulder injury and the team is unsure he will be racing the St. Louis or sitting it out to continue healing for the upcoming outdoors.

AMA AX Notebook: Dayton

AURORA, Ill. – As the penultimate round of the 2010 AMA Arenacross Series looms just a couple days away from Dayton, Ohio’s Nutter Center, the world’s best arenacross competitors prepare for the 11th round of bar-banging action before one of the most devoted crowds in the U.S.

The 2010 season has been a true test of resiliency as all 12 rounds of the season are being run consecutively without a single weekend off. While some riders have succumbed to the challenge of such an action-packed season and the intense nature of arenacross competition, one team has stood above the rest, putting together what is likely the most dominating season in the history of the AMA Arenacross Series.

Babbitt’s Monster Energy/TiLUBE Kawasaki, featuring Tyler Bowers, Josh Demuth and Chad Johnson have put together a remarkable season both as a team and individually. Bowers is the AMA Arenacross class points leader, boasting a series-leading nine victories. Demuth follows him from the runner-up spot in the standings, showcasing five wins of his own. Johnson rounds out the top three in the championship, holding a single win to his credit in 2010. As a team, at least one member of the Babbitt’s team has captured a spot on the podium in every race this season and a Babbitt’s rider has stood atop the podium at all but one race, giving them a winning percentage of 93% with two rounds and three races remaining. It is often said that consistency wins championships and they have proved that better than ever in 2010, effectively solidifying the top three positions in the championship with a 44-point advantage over fourth place.

Luck plays a significant factor throughout the course of an AMA Arenacross Series season where bad luck appears to find every rider in the field at some point. While the Babbitt’s squad has managed to stay relatively unscathed, the 2010 season will come to an unfortunate close for Bowers as an injury suffered in training has sidelined him for the rest of the year. Control of the championship now sits in the hands of Demuth, 19 points behind Bowers. Despite the inopportune injury to him, Bowers has still established an incredible points margin and will finish no worse than third in the championship, further strengthening just how dominant the Babbitt’s team has been this season.

While a bit of a let-down will loom over the final three races of the season thanks to Bowers’ absence, the Babbitt’s AMA Arenacross class team has risen to the occasion each and every week and the success the program has achieved doesn’t stop at the premier class. The Babbitt’s-backed GPF Kawasaki team in the AMA Arenacross Lites class has also set the standard throughout the season. While the challenge presented to the pair of GPF riders A.J. Catanzaro and Daniel Aulsaybrook throughout 2010 has been stronger, two of the youngest riders on the circuit, each of whom are racing the entire season for the first time, have answered the call and each sits in position to claim the respective AMA Arenacross Lites Regional Championships.

The AMA Arenacross Lites Eastern Regional Championship concludes on Saturday night and fresh off his first career victory last weekend, Aulsaybrook sits just four points out of the lead. With the amount of momentum he garnered from his latest outing, it would be hard to doubt his ability and determination to overcome that deficit.

In the AMA Arenacross Lites Western Regional Championship, Catanzaro has four overall wins to his credit in 2010 and leads the standings by 20 points with just one round and two races to go next weekend from Denver. Over the last few weeks, Catanzaro has been the hottest rider in the series and at just 16 years of age, the rookie is amassing one of the most impressive inaugural seasons ever.

With at least one member from the Babbitt’s Monster Energy/TiLUBE Kawasaki team guaranteed to win the premier class championship and a great opportunity for each GPF/Babbitt’s Kawasaki rider to take home the Lites Regional titles, Babbitt’s-backed Kawasaki’s are in prime position to make 2010 a clean sweep of arenacross prestige, a feat that has never been accomplished.

This weekend, the intimate and exciting action of the AMA Arenacross Series will be showcased at the Ervin J. Nutter Center on the campus of Wright State University. Serving as southwest Ohio’s premier sports and entertainment complex, the Nutter Center is home to NCAA Division I Wright State Raiders athletics and the ECHL’s Dayton Bombers hockey team.

Opened in 1990 and named for famous Ohioan Ervin J. Nutter, the main arena of the center seats a maximum of 12,000, but the facility also houses four basketball courts, a recreation running track, a fitness center, classrooms, and 60,000 square feet of exhibit space.

The action commences for the Dayton Arenacross Saturday at 7:00 p.m. Amateur Day concludes an exciting weekend of action on Sunday, beginning at 10 a.m.

New Site Set to Promote Supermoto in the U.S.

Supermoto Nation officially launched as a new company committed to growing the motorcycle category of supermoto in America. In addition to announcing the company, Supermoto Nation’s web site and Facebook page are now live. The web site and Facebook page will serve as a central point for people interested in getting started riding or racing supermoto.

The primary focus of Supermoto Nation will be to build an entertaining, innovative and successful professional supermoto series in America. In addition, the company will help leverage all the regional efforts and focus attention on the various groups and individuals committed to supporting and growing supermoto.

The name (Supermoto Nation) was selected to capture the potential of the sport of supermoto and to create excitement about this absolutely incredible motor sport. The name represents the future of supermoto and what is possible when people who are passionate about something take on building a supermoto nation.

“Originally this all started as an effort to figure out a way to salvage the Pro Supermoto Racing Series - no small undertaking in this economy. But as I continued to work on developing the series, I realized that it was going to take more than just a professional race series to properly promote supermoto in America. While some of the pieces exist today, there are a few elements that need to be added and everything has to be pulled together into a cohesive and compelling package. A package that builds the fan base, educates future customers about supermoto-style bikes and accessories, and encourages new participants to want to get involved in riding and racing supermoto,” commented Ed Kuhlenkamp, founder and owner of Supermoto Nation.

Supermoto Nation is in the process of exploring the likelihood of being able to proceed with developing a true national race series in 2010 and determining what that series will look like. The new Supermoto Nation web site will focus primarily on the professional racers, and teams involved in the series. In addition, it will also serve as a destination site for people interested in learning more about how to get started riding or racing supermoto. Currently, the site has only limited information posted; more details will be added in the weeks to come. The site does have sections dedicated to finding supermoto clubs and supermoto schools around the country. There are also plans to add other information about the various manufacturers of supermoto-style bikes, accessory companies and bike builders. The development of the site was a joint effort between John Sears, Drew Stoerrle and Ed Kuhlenkamp.

Arenacross Notebook: Youngstown Ohio

AURORA, Ill. – Through five rounds and eight races of the 2010 AMA Arenacross Series season, Babbitt’s Monster Energy/Ti Lube Kawasaki’s Tyler Bowers has been the rider to beat in the premier AMA Arenacross class, posting six victories – including a five-race winning streak. This weekend, the series heads to Youngstown, Ohio and the Covelli Centre for the first time since 2008.

In recent years, Ohio has served as a hotbed for the sport of arenacross. In a state known as the birthplace of aviation pioneers, it is no wonder that so many high-flying riders in the AMA Arenacross Series hail from the Buckeye State. With hard winters and sparse riding opportunities during most of the year, dirt-bike riders in Ohio go indoors for competition and learn a heightened sense of bike control that translates into every discipline in motocross.

This season, five of the series’ top riders call Ohio home but many more possess Ohio roots. The Ohio army is led by reigning series champion Jeff Gibson, who hails from Thornville. A veteran motocross competitor for many years, Gibson joined the AMA Arenacross Series for the first time last season and he quickly acclimated himself to the intimate, technical competition, recalling the many indoor events he competed in when he was younger.

Another veteran rider who grew up in Ohio is Gibson’s Tuf Honda teammate Brock Sellards, from Sherrodsville. A perennial front-runner and championship candidate, Sellards is a name synonymous with the sport. His ability to make a late-season push is uncanny and now that the season is reaching its halfway point, eyes will be on Sellards as he prepares for his annual charge in the second half.

Another well-known face and past champion Josh Demuth may call Texas home these days, but his blood is in Ohio, born and raised in Dover. Demuth is one of the most successful riders in the history of the AMA Arenacross Series and a significant contributor to his success is that, like so many of his peers, he grew up competing indoors during the winter months, honing his craft on small, technical tracks.

Perhaps the biggest commonality between all three of these competitors is that each possessed the dream and the passion to become successful at the supercross level, competing for a number of years at the pinnacle of the sport but only achieving moderate success. Now, each rider is writing their own legacy in the discipline that kicked-off their careers, capturing numerous race wins and accolades along the way. For each rider, the AMA Arenacross Series has served as somewhat of a homecoming and each has found a place in the heart of the sport and a genuine appreciation for the high level of competition the series provides.

In addition to the veterans, the Ohio youth movement in the AMA Arenacross Series is led by the up-and-coming Spinechillers/Storm Lake Honda trio of Nathan Skaggs, of Chillicothe, Willy Browning, of Pleasantville, and Zach Ames, of Prospect. Each rider is a representative of not only the youth movement within Ohio, but the surge in the AMA Arenacross Series as well. Each rider holds the potential to be future stars in the sport with both Skaggs and Browning achieving early success while Ames is on the verge of breaking through into a consistent challenger.

The Covelli Centre is the state-of-the-art home of the USHL’s Youngstown Phantom’s and is a short drive from Pittsburgh. The arena opened in 2005 and has played host to several entertainment acts since, including the AMA Arenacross Series back in 2008.

The arena has an occupancy of 5,700 and is seen as the center point of the rejuvenation of the Youngstown area.

The first gates drop on the Youngstown Arenacross Friday, February 12 beginning at 7:30 p.m. followed by another night of action on Saturday the 13th at 7:30 p.m. The action concludes with Amateur Day on Sunday, beginning at 10 a.m.

Advance tickets are available for this weekend’s Youngstown Arenacross at the Covelli Centre Box Office, Ticketmaster charge by phone and ticketmaster.com. Tickets cost $2 more the day of the race.

Fans in attendance also can take part in the Track Party on Saturday from 5:00-6:00 p.m. for the chance to meet the riders and get autographs. Simply recycle any MONSTER ENERGY can at the gate entrance for FREE admission. Must have valid Saturday event ticket to enter.

32nd Annual Motorama Arenacross

Hanover PA. The Harrisburg Farm Show Complex will host the 32nd annual Motorama Races & Shows on February 20th & 21st. Spectator doors will open on this mid winter extravaganza Saturday from 9AM to 10PM and Sunday from 9AM to 5 PM. This is the time for all motorheads to get a jump on the Spring racing season. Motorama combines 2 huge indoor shows with the excitement of live racing, all in the heated 24 - acre complex.

The main hall at the south end of the complex is home to the Speed Show. Stroll down the isles to see over 350 race and show vehicle related vendors,collectables and simulators. Vote for your favorite vehicle by supporting our charity, the Spina BiFida Association. With the support of Motorama fans and the voting public, over $220,000 has been raised for families in Central Pennsylvania. On the show stage will be a charity auction, musical entertainment and the ever-popular Ms Motorama Pageant. Ms Motorama 2009, _Jessica Jordan from Boonsboro, Md. will hand over her crown Sunday between 11AM and 1:30 PM.

The new Expo Hall at the North end has expanded to include the new Rod & Custom car show along with the Tunerwar Sport Compact and Bike Show. This will be the largest two-day show of its kind on the East Coast, with over 300 vehicles on display. There will be "live" entertainment on stage both days along with stunts by the Free Cycle Action Sports Team.

As always, the indoor racing provides the adrenaline for the 30,000 Motorama fans. The must see spectacle is the two days of high flying arenacross action in the 8000 seat Large Arena. Some of the best motorcross and ATV riders in the northeast will battle, handle bar to handle bar, while trying to tame the dirt jumps. New to the Arenacross track this year will be Remote Control 1/5 scale Baja trucks & buggies brought to you by Hostile Hobby.
Remote control competition will be a big part of Motorama 2010. Don't let their size fool you, these nitro burning 1/8 scale buggies, truggies, and monster trucks, run like the big boys without the driver. They are radio controlled from a 10-foot driver's stand and refueled during the race by a one-man pit crew. All the action takes place in the 1200 seat Equine Arena and sponsored by TQ Fuels.

The West hall will be home to the newest forms of Electric Remote Control Racing. There will be two tracks, one for 1/10 scale Remote Control racing on the short course brought to you by Harrisburg's own Hidden Hanger and a Rockcrawling competition on a purpose built layout of rock & dirt for three rockcrawling divisions run by Western Pennsylvania Rockcrawlers Association and is an Official qualifying event for the Nationals.

Destruction is the attraction in the Small Arena. This is Robot Conflict territory and run by the Northeast Robotics Club. All the robots are entered in a bracket according to their weight. Two bots enter a Plexiglas enclosed arena and battle for 3 minutes. The winner goes to the next round.

If it's oval racing you like, you have two options. In the Northeast Building there will be over 200 go karts competing on the 1/10th mile concrete oval. Racing is intense with 6-second lap times. The kids are the main attraction in the Quarter Midget Races in the Northwest Building. See boys and girls from ages 5 to 14 years of age test their skills on the concrete oval. These kids are serious about their racing and are the future stars of the sport. There are over 230 midgets registered.

The 2010 edition of Motorama is the largest event of it's kind in the northeast and is a sure cure for cabin fever. KTM Expands 2010 Contingency Program

Murrieta, CA – KTM North America, Inc. is excited to announce its 2010 Amateur Contingency Program posting over $475,000 in awards money.

KTM offers contingency in multiple off-road and motocross series throughout the United States. The 2010 program has been expanded to include more motocross series and increased payouts to the existing off-road series that are on the schedule.

“KTM understands that economic times are tough and riders can use every bit of help to keep their bikes properly maintained for race day,” remarked FMF/KTM Team Manager Antti Kallonen. “That is why KTM has decided to increase the contingency payouts in the off-road series while also expanding the amount of motocross events on the schedule. Unadilla Race Racap

The Unadilla National is both a classic and quite unique. It has been around the motocross championship circuit since basically the beginning of the championship, and the layout, dirt and location of the event are all mostly throwbacks to the beginning of motocross in America, which is probably why it was chosen as the “Retro” race of the 2009 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship.

Historically, Rockstar/Makita Suzuki’s Chad Reed hasn’t gotten along very well with the Unadilla circuit, but he hoped to change it going into this year’s event.

MCRMX’s Jeff Alessi got the first-moto holeshot, and like his older brother Mike is accustomed to doing, he actually began to pull away from second-placed Davi Millsaps of the Honda Red Bull Racing team. On lap three, though, Alessi crashed out of the lead, handing the spot to Millsaps as Reed was working his way toward the leaders.

After five total laps, Reed had not only caught Millsaps, but passed him, and quickly began to pull away. Over the next half of the race, Millsaps lost touch with Reed and then fell into the clutches of Canidae/Motosport Kawasaki’s Tommy Hahn, who moved into second with four laps to go. Then Millsaps had to fight off Reed’s teammate Michael Byrne, and he was able to do so successfully.

Reed took the win over Hahn, Millsaps, Byrne, Andrew Short, Ivan Tedesco and visiting GP rider Gareth Swanepoel (from the Monster Kawasaki squad for the weekend).

Short got the start in moto two and looked like a new man (or the old Andrew Short we’re used to). However, Reed started close to the front and it wasn’t long before he was working on Short for the lead, and he passed Short on lap five, again immediately checking out.

Short hung on for second over Byrne, Jagermeister KTM’s Justin Brayton, Valli Yamaha’s Kyle Regal, Swanepoel, Ferry and Tedesco.

Reed took his fifth moto win in a row, and the second two-moto sweep in a row, on his way to the overall. Short was second and Byrne was third.

With three rounds left, Reed leads by 82 points over Short.

Muscle Milk KTM’s Martin Davalos got the holeshot to start the opening 250cc moto but was quickly overtaken by Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Christophe Pourcel. The slick, rutted Unadilla surface obviously agreed with Pourcel, and he quickly pulled out to a massive lead as championship rival Ryan Dungey worked his way through from outside the top five.

Pourcel’s teammate Jake Weimer chased him in second early on, only to lose a spot to Dungey when the Suzuki rider finally made his way up to that position.

Pourcel took the easy win over Dungey, Weimer, and GEICO Powersports Honda’s Brett Metcalfe and Blake Wharton.

Sure not to give anyone a chance, Pourcel actually got the holeshot in the second moto and split. He led his teammate Weimer, Wharton, Austin Stroupe, Justin Barcia and Dungey early on. However, by the end of the moto, the second moto looked much like the first, with the top four repeating from moto one.

Although Pourcel and Dungey came into the event tied in points, they left with Pourcel leading Dungey by six points with three rounds left to run.

The “other” rider in the class, GEICO Powersports Honda’s Kevin Windham, qualified third and raced his way to a decent finish in the first moto, but he missed the staging call for moto two and was forced to take the last gate pick on the far outside. His horrible start led to a un-Windham-like finish.

MORGANTOWN, W.V. (July 23, 2009) - The second half of the 2009 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship season kicked-off what will surely be a memorable final six races as Rockstar/Makita/Suzuki set the tone for the year's final push. This weekend, the series heads to the beautiful Pacific Northwest for the Motosport.com Motocross National Presented by Yamaha and Scott USA from Washougal MX Park in lush Washougal, Wash. Live coverage of round eight can been seen on SPEED, beginning at 9 p.m. ET.

For the second time in 2009, the factory Suzuki stable swept the overall victories in the 450 and 250 classes at Spring Creek. Premier class points leader Chad Reed raced to season win number two, which also served as his second career victory on the big bikes. The win helped Reed extend his points lead and in control of the series' home stretch. Teammate Ryan Dungey made it two in a row at his home track in Minnesota and vaulted to just three points out of the 250 Class points lead by garnering his third win of the season.

450 Class

Rockstar/Makita/Suzuki

Reed's cushion now sits at a comfortable 37 points and according to the Australian, last weekend was the first time all season that he felt as though he rode his best. The two-time supercross champion has held the red leader plate since his first win at High Point and if his words are true, his rivals are going to need to be at the top of their game down the homestretch. For Michael Byrne, Spring Creek marked the fellow Australian's return to the overall podium. He rode his best race of the season, overcoming adversity en route to an impressive third place effort. From here on out, Byrne will be looking to keep up the momentum.

"Going into the weekend, I want to try and keep some momentum going," stated Reed. "I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this past weekend was the last of my stomach problems. Washougal is a tough track - it's hard and it's slick. Even though I've always done well there, it's a track I've had to work hard at."

"Washougal is a good track for me, I enjoy racing there," said Byrne. "It can be a little bit slick but everybody will have to deal with that. The track layout is really fun and the Rockstar/Makita/Suzuki RM-Z450 worked good there last year so hopefully this weekend we'll be able to keep the ball rolling."

Honda Red Bull Racing

Honda returned to full strength last weekend in Millville. The arrival of Davi Millsaps was a welcome sight throughout the pits as the Georgia rider competed in his first race since injuring his neck at the series' second round. Prior to the event, Millsaps stated that his goal was to finish on the podium at the remaining races. If not for some hard luck, he would have achieved his goal, looking rejuvenated at the front of the pack. For his teammates Ivan Tedesco and Andrew Short, it was a quiet Saturday. Tedesco captured second overall, but did so methodically and without flair. He closed the gap on Short who sits second in the standings and had a frustrating day in Minnesota by his standards finishing fifth overall. With a runner-up finish at Washougal one year ago to build off of, Short will look to close the gap on Reed while his teammates push to keep Honda at the forefront of the class.

JGRMX/Toyota/Yamaha

Coming off his first career win at RedBud, Josh Grant had high hopes at reasserting himself in the championship fight at Spring Creek. A strong performance in moto one gave the Southern California rookie the win and a upper hand in claiming his second straight victory but a crash out of the gate relegated Grant to the back of the field where he was able to recover admirably and capture fourth overall. Washougal has been a good track for Grant, who finished third in the 250 Class one year ago and he hopes it translates to another trip atop the podium. For teammate Cody Cooper, 2009 continues to be a battle of consistency. While he is a regular top-10 performer, Cooper expects to run at the front of the pack each week. While his ninth place run last weekend helped solidify his sixth place in the standings, he hopes to gain ground on the top five. If a fourth place finish at Washougal in 2008 is any indication, the New Zealander could find himself on the podium on Saturday.

Jagermeister KTM

A pair of seventh place finishes in Millville helped give Justin Brayton his best career finish of sixth since joining the 450 Class in 2009. Prior to last weekend, Brayton's best finish in a moto was seventh, coming at High Point. Thanks to strong starts, he ran up front early and got a taste of the pace necessary to have a shot at the top five. The race proved to be a valuable lesson in his continued growth as a big bike rider and should result in another strong outing in Washington.

Brayton added, "I have been working hard this season and progressing each round and hope to break the top five this weekend and land on the podium before the season is over."

250 Class

Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki

With two straight victories to his credit, Jake Weimer entered Spring Creek as the rider to beat in the 250 Class. However, the depth of talent in arguably the toughest field in history resulted in a sixth place finish for the Idaho rider after mid-pack starts out of the gate. Despite missing out on a third overall win, Weimer still made up ground in the standings, moving into sixth. For teammate Christophe Pourcel, Millville proved to be an important race in the championship. The points leader captured his seventh straight overall podium result and has yet to finish worse than second this season. Rival Ryan Dungey swept the day's motos, but thanks to his stellar consistency, the Frenchman still holds a three point advantage. The championship battle is shaping up to be a dogfight over the final five rounds but Pourcel's calmness throughout the 2009 campaign will surely help him remained focus.

"Washougal should be a good race for me," said Weimer. "We have been running pretty well and I like the track. We're going to just keep working hard and we're going to try and get the results we know we can achieve."

I want to start winning again," explained Pourcel. "My goal is the championship and the easiest way to get that is to win motos. I overcame some things last week so I know I can still race for the win."

Rockstar/Makita/Suzuki

After several motos of small misfortune where valuable championship points may have slipped away, Ryan Dungey put together his best performance of the season at his hometown race by going 1-1 on the day. It was a huge boost in confidence for Dungey who has felt as though he let a couple opportunities slip away earlier in the season. One year ago, the Minnesota native garnered one of the biggest wins of his career at Washougal, outlasting Ryan Villopoto to claim his first career professional motocross victory. Since this race in 2008, Dungey has been a different rider and with such a strong performance one week ago to set the stage on Saturday, he is ready to take the title fight to the wire.

"Washougal is always a track I enjoy going to," added Dungey. "It's one of my favorite stops on the racing circuit. I got my first Outdoors win there last year, so that makes it special for me. Hopefully I can get another win there this weekend."

GEICO Powersports Honda

Over the last couple rounds, rookie Justin Barcia and veteran Brett Metcalfe have put on a show for the fans while leading the way for the GEICO Honda team. The duo ran at the front of the pack again in Millville and appear to be settling into a groove as the season reaches the final stretch. Barcia captured his first career overall podium finish with Metcalfe following closely in fourth. The performances have vaulted each rider up the standings where Metcalfe has moved into the top three while Barcia sits fifth, inching his way towards the top four. Blake Wharton suffered from a hard-luck outing last Saturday, scoring just two points. Despite the tough finish, Wharton's resiliency and ability to run up front should translate into a big turnaround in Washington. Metcalfe is the only member of the team with previous experience at Washougal, finishing just off the podium last season in fourth.

Muscle Milk/MDK/KTM

After a string of outstanding runs leading into Spring Creek, Tommy Searle surprised many onlookers with his 10th-place finish last Saturday. The British rookie did not appear to be the same rider that posted three consecutive podium results and in turn, dropped from third to fourth in the standings. He will be looking to bounce back this weekend. For teammates Wil Hahn and Martin Davalos, Minnesota was a race to forget as each rider suffered injuries and will miss the action this weekend.

"I had an off weekend at Millville and just never got comfortable," explained Searle. "I worked with my trainer and my team this week to improve in some areas where I was lacking last week and plan to return to the podium this weekend."

WMX Class

After a two-race break, the Women's Motocross Class of the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship returns to action at Washougal. Honda Red Bull Racing's Ashley Fiolek is a perfect 5-0 this season for overall victories, but five-time champion and arch rival Jessica Patterson is the only woman to ever win at Washougal since the class began racing there in 2004. With some time off, all the girls will be fresh and while the battle up front between Fiolek and Patterson will be tight, expect Cernic's Suzuki's Sherri Cruse to make her presence felt as she looks to steal a win of her own.

Round 7 Series Statistical Report

* Chad Reed became just the second rider to repeat in the 450 Class. Both riders have come from the Rockstar/Makita/Suzuki team with Reed and Mike Alessi.
* The win was Reed's 41st career AMA victory but just his third in AMA Motocross. The remaining 38 have come in AMA Supercross.
* As a whole, Roger DeCoster's riders have won 50% of the overall victories across both classes (7 of 14).
* Reed started a new streak for the 450 Class, becoming the second straight winner to take the overall with 2-1 moto finishes.

National Enduro Series - 8th round Blain, PA

Shock Doctor/KTM Factory rider Mike Lafferty continued his come back win streak at the eighth round of the National Enduro Series when he took the win over his teammate Russell Bobbitt.

The two KTM riders have battled closely all year and after Lafferty's win this past weekend only 1 point separates them in the championship race. Both riders have each won 4 rounds of the series which bodes will for the KTM team - as only KTM riders have won every race of the series.

"Rocky, slippery and hard," commented Lafferty on the challenging Pennsylvania course. "I knew it would be tough, but I wasn't expecting it to be as difficult as it was. You had to be on your game today. Many riders went down hard in the first section as some rocks were planted and others just moved right out from under you."

In an impressive ride, Lafferty managed to win each special test. "It definitely wasn't easy today and Russell (Bobbitt) certainly gave me a run for my money. This win is special to me because I consider this round a hometown race for me and I had many family members come out and support me today." Not only did Lafferty have family members to support him during the race. But his brothers, Jack and Rich along with his father all suited up and raced as well.

The riders will now enjoy a three week break before the series returns for the ninth round to be held in Marquette, MI.

Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship: Honda Motocross National Team Previews and Series Statistics for Spring Creek

MORGANTOWN, W.V. (July 16, 2009) - As the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross series reaches the half way point, the championship fights are far from being decided as parity rules amongst both the 450 and 250 classes. The second half of the season kicks-off this Saturday with the Honda Motocross National from Spring Creek MX in Millville, Minn. Same-day coverage of the race can be seen on SPEED at 11 p.m. ET.

At the last round of the championship, the world's best riders celebrated the 4th of July at RedBud with yet another new face standing atop the podium at the end of the day.

JGRMX/Toyota/Yamaha's Josh Grant captured his first career 450 Class victory after an impressive 2-1 performance where he showcased his stellar speed to become the fifth different winner in the class in 2009. Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki's Jake Weimer made it two in a row in the 250 Class by relying on consistency when his rivals found misfortune, taking unlikely 2-4 results to the overall win.

450 Class
Rockstar/Makita/Suzuki
Chad Reed is still in control of the premier class standings after a second overall at RedBud. His 21 point lead puts him in a comfortable position heading into the final six races, but with the way the season has gone, it is still anybody's race. At his last visit to Spring Creek in 2007, Reed brought home 10th overall and he will look to improve heavily on that result on Saturday. For teammate Michael Byrne, the season continues to be one of consistency. A pair of seventh place results solidified seventh overall for the Australian the last time out, but third last year in Millville gives Byrne the confidence he needs to make a return to the box for the first time in 2009.
"Millville is another track that is kind of like Red Bud for me in that I love it," exclaimed Reed. "It's one of my top-three favorite tracks that we race on. Having this last weekend off before Millville was great. I worked really hard on my stomach with the hope of being able to be strong and at my very best for the last half of the year. I'm really just working hard on my health so I can put my best foot forward and continue to gain points on second place overall so I can win this championship."

"Millville is a great track," said Byrne. "It's got a little bit of everything - elevation, sand and even clay. It's definitely a fun track and hopefully we'll get the ball rolling this weekend, get in a good ride and on the Rockstar Makita Suzuki RM-Z450 and get some championship points."

JGRMX/Toyota/Yamaha
Grant has been on the cusp of taking that first victory on numerous occasions this season, but bad starts and bouts of misfortune forced him to wait until Michigan where he put together arguably one of the most impressive performances of his career. The premier class rookie was the fastest rider all weekend and came just a bike-length short of sweeping the day's motos. The win rejuvenated his season and has him back in the title fight, just two points out of the top three. His teammate Cody Cooper was also solid at RedBud, capping off a stellar weekend for the JGR team. The New Zealander was resilient en route to fifth overall and it is only a matter of time before he is fighting for his spot on the podium

Honda Red Bull Racing
The red riders continue to be the most consistent team in the 450 pits. Riders Andrew Short and Ivan Tedesco hold down second and third in the standings and are consistently fighting with Reed for their chance at the top. Tedesco has already broken through for his first career victory and if Short continues to ride at such a high level, it will only be a matter of time before he does the same. At the previous round, Tedesco out-dueled his teammate for the final spot on the podium, relegating Short to a strong fourth place finish. Short hopes his second overall in Millville last season translates into that elusive first win.

"I'm thoroughly enjoying myself this season and the good team dynamics have really helped shape my results," explained Tedesco.

"It was great to have a weekend off and just chill out," explained Short. "I spent a week at motocross church camp spending time with kids, helping and teaching them, using the skills and knowledge that I'm fortunate enough to have been blessed with. It's great motivation heading into Millville this weekend - I'm excited! I've been fairly successful there in the past and I expect to be faster this time around. The Spring Creek track itself is prepped really well and always has good dirt. It should be fun."

Monster Energy Kawasaki
For the green machines, super sub Ricky Dietrich continues to be the heart-warming story of the 2009 season. The Washington rider's worst finish through four races with the team is seventh, and he produced a solid sixth place effort at RedBud to move firmly into the top 10 in the standings. Veteran Timmy Ferry's recovery from a broken heel is still taking some time to get back to 100% and last season's championship runner-up has yet to return to top form so far. With a fifth place result to learn from last year, maybe Spring Creek is the site to turn everything around.

"I'm starting to get some confidence in my starts," said Dietrich. "That is what I worked on most these last two weeks and I know I can run up front if I can get a good jump out of the gate."

Jagermeister KTM
After a tough outing in Colorado, Justin Brayton returned to top-10 form at RedBud, bringing home 10th overall on the day. The rookie 450 competitor has experienced some ups and downs so far this season, but his high level of talent and stellar fitness should translate into positive results over the final six events.

250 Class
Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki
Through the first four races of 2009, Jake Weimer didn't have too many high points regarding his results. However, all that changed at Thunder Valley when win number one finally happened after a long and trying wait. The momentum and confidence the Idaho rider received from his first victory has apparently revitalized his season and now with two wins in the bag, he can focus on a steady climb through the point standings where he currently sits seventh, quickly closing in on the top 5. Teammate Christophe Pourcel continues to ride smart, smooth, and methodical and despite the high-paced speed of the class, it is working to his advantage. The Frenchman sits atop the standings with a nine-point advantage and at RedBud continued his streak of winning at least one moto at every round this season. Each week Pourcel is seeing the tracks for the first time, but it has not appeared to hinder him.
"I'm going to keep my program going," explained Weimer. "I just want to stay relaxed because that is when I ride at my best. I've taken some time to work on my radio controlled car and things are going well. It should be a fun weekend."

"It was good to get some time off," added Pourcel. "It is going to be a tough second half of the season and I am ready for it. We have a good team and I know we will be ready for anything."

Rockstar/Makita/Suzuki
After a dominating first moto win at RedBud, the 4th of July looked to be Dungey's for the taking and his chance to re-assert himself atop the standings after Pourcel found early trouble. Moto two looked to have more of the same from the Minnesota rider but a spectacular crash effectively ended any shot at the overall win. Showcasing his admirable resiliency, Dungey brought home a damaged bike to fifth overall and salvaged points to stay right with Pourcel in the title fight. Last season, he took the win at his home track and there isn't a better place to get this season back on track for Dungey than Spring Creek.

"Coming into Millville this weekend, I'm just really pumped to be going into my home track race this year," explained Dungey. "It's a really enjoyable track, and we're just coming off a two-week break so it'll be new and fresh for me. Also, I'll have a lot of friends and family there, so that'll be pretty special. At the same time, I'll do my best to take it like any other race weekend."

GEICO Powersports Honda
Brett Metcalfe led the way for the GEICO riders in Michigan, putting in his best ride of the season to finish fourth overall in a four-way tie for the runner-up spot. The Australian rider appears to get better each and every week and is on the cusp of his first podium in 2009. If a third at Millville last season is any indication, it could be as early as Saturday. Rookie phenom Justin Barcia has scaled back his all-out mentality the past few rounds and it is paying off. After a pair of crashes and tough finishes, he has rebounded nicely and is a consistent podium threat each time the gate drops. While Blake Wharton did not run as strong as he would have hoped at RedBud, the young rider returns to the site of his pro debut in which he turned heads by leading a significant portion of the day. The Texas rider hopes to replicate that result and rebound from his tough outing. Making a one-race appearance for GEICO Honda will be hometown rider Alex Martin. The son of the Spring Creek track owners has more laps than anyone at the renowned facility and with the power of a factory bike beneath him, it could be a weekend to remember in Millville.

"My goal for Millville is to win a race," stated Barcia. "The icing on the cake would be to finish on the overall round podium, that would be great, but I'm hungry for a win right now."

Muscle Milk/MDK/KTM
Tommy Searle has been one of the hottest riders in the 250 Class over the past three rounds, posting third overall at each race. The British rider is adapting to the pace of American Motocross each and every week and came close to capturing his first moto victory in Michigan. The podium finish moved him into third in the standings and as his confidence grows each time out on the track, he will be one to keep an eye on at the front of the field. Teammates Martin Davalos and Wil Hahn both posted top-10 results at RedBud, with Davalos running up front early in the second moto. While Davalos works on getting back into race shape after considerable time off for injury, Hahn hopes to build on an impressive eighth place run at Millville last season.

Round 6 Series Statistical Report

• With a total of seven first-time winners across both classes, this is the most parity the series has seen since 1999.
• Mike Alessi is the only repeat winner in the 450 Class in 2009. That is five different winners in six races.
• With moto results of 2-1, Josh Grant became the first overall winner in the 450 Class to not sweep the day's motos.
• Over the past nine seasons, there have been a total of five first-time winners in the 450 Class. Each overall winner in 2009 (5) raced to victory for the first time.
