Lafferty Wins Alligator Enduro

Michael Lafferty gave Husaberg their first-ever national Enduro win with a come-from-behind victory at the 60^th running of the Alligator Enduro in Daytona Beach, Florida – round three of the Rekluse/AMA National Enduro Series.

The Alligator Enduro has the reputation of being one of the toughest events on the national schedule and this year’s edition carried on that tradition. Flooding in the low-lying areas due to a very wet February forced some sections of the course to be thrown out, and organizers eventually shortened the event to 57 miles and five sections.  Of course, the wet nature of the trail made for some spectacular mud holes, and added to the difficulty of the event for the 500 participants on hand. Ultimately, the demanding course played right into Lafferty’s hand.

“I like it when the events are tough,” said Lafferty. “When the trail is real hard and demanding, and it doesn’t flow, and it kind of beats you up a little bit – I kind of like that.”

Lafferty was particularly fast in the fourth section, which is where the nastiest bogs were found. It was here that the New Jersey native gained most of his time, making up about 30 seconds on defending series champ Russell Bobbitt, who at the time was leading the event on his Shock Doctor KTM

The leader in the initial part of the race, however, was former GNCC and World Enduro Champ David Knight, who is in Florida training for the upcoming FIM season. Knighter held a five-second lead over Bobbitt after the opening section and extended that to a nine-second advantage after the second section. However, it all came undone for the Brit at the midway point of the race when his KTM suffered engine problems.

With Knight’s departure from the event, Bobbitt and Lafferty were elevated to first and second, with Bobbitt holding a 29-second advantage over Lafferty after three tests. The fourth section was a game changer for Lafferty, however.

“Up until the fourth section I was thinking a lot. And they told me there was going to be a lot of water in the fourth section, so I just decided to stop thinking and ride the thing,” said Lafferty. “A lot of guys were trying to sneak around the outside of the mud holes and I just went for it and hit the middle lines. Instead of shifting the thing a lot, I just left it in one gear and went straight through it all. It was a big gamble, but it paid off.”

At the finish, Lafferty edged Bobbitt by nine seconds to take the win. Nick Fahringer made it two Husabergs on the podium with a third place finish, matching his best-ever national placing.

Factory KTM rider Brad Bakken finished fourth ahead of 2008 Alligator Enduro winner Wally Palmer, riding the same Kawasaki that he won the ’08 race on. Meanhile, Husqvarna’s Glenn Kearney and GEICO/Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Jimmy Jarrett rounded out the top seven.

Obermeyer/Am-Pro Yamaha’s Charile Mullins’ day was done just a mile into the race when he suffered clutch problems after taking a hard fall on the sandy trail. Meanwhile, KTM’s Cory Buttrick, who held the points lead going into the event, elected not to race because of blisters he developed at Tuesday’s GNCC round in Lake Wales, Florida.

With three rounds in the book, Bobbitt now holds the series points lead with 71 points, followed by Lafferty with 69 and Buttrick with 55. Fahringer (52) and Mullins (48) round out the top five.

Kyle Chisholm Joins MotoConcepts Racing

Kyle Chisholm Joins MotoConcepts Racing

Spokane, Wash. (January 29, 2010) – MotoConcepts Racing is excited to announce the addition of Kyle Chisholm to their race team.  Kyle will fill in for injured riders Matt Goerke and Dan Reardon in the 450 class.  Goerke broke his tibia and fibula in late December and is currently recovering in Florida.  His expected return has not yet been established. Reardon is currently week to week after a scary looking crash at Anaheim One. 

Chisholm, who was riding for Rock River Yamaha, was released by team owner Mike Duclos, allowing him to join the MotoConcepts squad. 

“I had a number of conversations with Mike at Rock River and want to thank him for his professionalism and flexibility during the process of getting Kyle to our program,” stated MotoConcepts Team Owner Mike Genova.   “I also want to thank Fox Racing Shox who spent a lot of time and energy getting things race ready for Kyle and their understanding as we make this move.  We are excited about Kyle’s potential and thank everyone who was involved.” 

Chisholm will make his MotoConcepts debut this Saturday in San Francisco.

Honda Offers Up $46,750 in Contingency for Can-Am Grand National Cross Country Series

Morgantown, W.Va. (January 18, 2010) - Longtime Can-Am GNCC supporter Honda returns for the 2010 tour with $46,750 in Contingency payout. Honda supports the top 5 finishers in several amateur and Pro bike classes for five events.
"We are very proud of our 2010 Contingency program," said Keith Dowdle, Assistant Manager of Honda Riders Club of America. "Our contingency program pays for 2008 and newer models. This economy is tough, and some may not be able to buy a new bike, even though we'd like you to. So if you're riding red, we'll support you."
Honda will award the XC1 Pro and XC2Pro Lites first place winner $150, followed by $125 for second, and $75 for third.

Yamaha posts $52,250 in 2010 Can-Am GNCC Contingency Payout

Morgantown, W.Va. (January 19, 2010) - Long-time Can-Am Grand National Cross Country series supporter Yamaha has returned for the 2010 tour with $52,250 in Contingency payout. Yamaha supports the top 3 finishers in the youth and amateur classes all the way up to the pro ranks for 10 events.
"Yamaha is proud to announce our continued support of the GNCC series in 2010 by offering Yamaha motorcycle riders from the 85cc Youth to the Super Senior classes access to our 2010 Contingency program," said Donnie Luce, Yamaha's ATV and Off-Road Coordinator. Our program was designed to reward qualified riders for their efforts while competing in one of toughest series in Off-Road Racing as well as helping them build a strong relationship with their local Yamaha Dealers."
Yamaha awards the XC1 1^st place rider $400, followed by $300 for second and $200 for first.  In the XC2 Pro-Lites class, Yamaha awards 1^st place with $250 followed by $200 for second and $150 for third.

GNCC Racing Television Returns with New Time Slot
2010 Season Begins April 25

Morgantown, W.Va. (December 29, 2009) - For the tenth straight year, the highly popular Racer TV program will return with ATV and bike coverage for the 2010 Can-Am Grand National Cross Country Series.  All 13 GNCC bike and ATV rounds, 26 races in total, will air on VERSUS in 30-minute episodes, totaling 52 hours of GNCC action.  Each race will debut on Sunday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. EST and will re-air on Tuesdays at 5:00 p.m. EST.  The first episode will feature The Parts Unlimited River Ranch ATV Premiere on April 25. The GNCC Series continues to be America's only off-road series offering bike and ATV racing coverage on cable television.
"I'm really excited that our shows will be airing in a new time slot," said RacerTV Producer Jason Hooper. "Our goal with RacerTV is to showcase the best off-road racers in the world to as many people as possible, and our later time slots will allow more people the opportunity to tune in."
Along with Hooper, returning to the Racer TV production crew is Mike Holbert, a former GNCC pro-class racer on bikes and ATVs. Holbert has been a part of the GNCC TV team since the shows began airing in 2001. Brian Risch, who has worked for Gear Media's TV Crew covering the AMA ATV Motocross Championship, is new to the crew this year.
This year's shows will focus on the battle for the GNCC XC1 and XC2 pro class titles. On ATVs, Defending GNCC Champion Chris Borich will return to take on a deep field of tough competition like Taylor Kiser, Adam McGill, Bill Ballance and Bryan Cook. On the bike side, Defending GNCC Champion Paul Whibley will battle with Josh Strang and Charlie Mullins to attempt to take his second title in a row.
The 2010 Can-Am Grand National Cross Country Series kicks off on February 27- March 2 as part of Bike Week at the Westgate River Ranch Resort in River Ranch, Florida, with ATV's racing on Sunday, February 28, and bikes racing on Tuesday, March 2.

Team Green Succeeds at Florida Mini-O

Team Green dominates the podium at the 2009 Winter National Olympics.

Monster Energy Kawasaki Team Green riders celebrated the holiday weekend with a chart-topping 25 championships and 47 podiums at the 2009 Winter National Olympics in Gainesville, Fla. The riders were faced with both supercross and motocross racing throughout the week, proving their all-around riding ability. Young gun Chase Bell took home five total championships, while veteran riders captured every championship throughout the week in the plus classes.

With a three month break from the last big national at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch, Bell didn’t seem to miss a beat when he took to the track in Florida. Bell won every first moto he attempted and ended up with an impressive five championships in both 65cc and 85cc classes.

Plus Riders Take All
Kawasaki’s dominance in the Plus classes continued with James Evans, Jon Boruff, Mike Treadwell, Earl May, and Matt Tedder Sr. taking wins. Evans earned both the supercross and motocross titles in the Plus 30 and the Plus 25 supercross title, while Boruff snuck in and grabbed the Plus 25 motocross title. Treadwell swept up the Plus 35 and Plus 40 in both the supercross and motocross competition. May rode to a steady two title week with wins in both Plus 45 classes, while Tedder did the same in the Plus 50.

Chase and Tanner Round Up 65cc
With eight 65cc class championships up for grabs, Kawasaki’s KX65 took five of the eight throughout the week with the help of Bell and Stack. Between them, they won 12 of the 16 possible motos and took three of the four Olympiad awards in the 65cc classes.

First Big Bike Championship
Justin Summers took his first-career big bike championship in the competitive Open B Stock class. Summers had earned titles in smaller displacements, but this was his first on a bigger displacement. With the gate always stacked with talent, Summers showed off his supercross skills and was able to grab his first in his home state of Florida.

The Award Goes To…
The Monster Energy Kawasaki Team Green riders took home a host of awards after the final checkered flag was waved. Summers took home the special Thor Outstanding Achievement Award, while a handful of riders were named Olympiad of their specific classes. The Olympiad award is calculated by averaging the moto scores from both the supercross and motocross competition, with Kawasaki taking nine awards. Stack earned the honors in 65 (7-9) Division 1, Bell in the 65 (10-11) Division 2 and 85 (9-11) Division 3, Evans in the Plus 25 and Plus 30, Treadwell in the Plus 35 and Plus 40, May in the Plus 45, and Matt Tedder Sr. in the Plus 50.

Trackside Support

Kawasaki was on hand to help team green riders.

The support that Team Green set out to offer 30 years ago was still being offered at the first official race of the new season in Florida. The staff’s assistance is available at each amateur national, along with select regional events throughout the year.

Muddy Track
After most of the supercross racing had concluded, the rains of Florida moved in to Gatorback Cycle Park. Although it had stopped for Thursday’s racing, the track conditions made it challenging for the riders.

Tag Metals Factory Brings Home 15 Titles from Florida

New-comer to the Tag Metals Factory8 team; Rockstar Suzuki’s Ian Trettel proved his worth by contending for the win in every class that he entered. He came away with a total of 6 (SIX) titles and dominated the mx portion by winning every overall that he contested!

Another new-comer to the Factory 8 this year, Rockstar Suzuki’s Jace Owen absolutely owned the 85cc classes this week, coming away with 5 titles himself!

Eli Tomac powered his Geico Powersports Honda to the championship in the 250A/Pro-am mod class. Eli had a difficult weekend but still came away with a title.

A third new comer to the team; Gannon Audette won the Open B stock and modified classes on his  Rockstar Suzuki’s to come away with 2 championships.

A fourth new-comer; Jesse Masterpool won the 85cc (12-13) mod title on his Rockstar Suzuki.

2010 Can-Am Grand National Cross Country Series Schedule Announced

Morgantown, W.Va. (November 19, 2009) - Racer Productions, producers of the Can-Am Grand National Cross Country (GNCC) Series, have announced the final schedule and locations for the 2010 Can-Am GNCC tour. The 13-round series schedule mimics the highly successful 2009 Schedule except for Round 6 of the series, the location of which is yet to be announced.
The series begins for the second year in a row at the West Gate River Ranch in River Ranch, Florida as part of Daytona Bike Week from February 27 to March 2, and will conclude with the series favorite, the Ironman GNCC in Crawfordsville, Indiana, on October 23-24.

Racer Productions Announces 2010 Grand National Cross Country Proposed Pro Rules

Morgantown, W.Va. (November 19, 2009) - Racer Productions, producers of the Can-Am Grand National Cross Country Series, has announced the proposed rules for the 2010 tour in the XC1 and XC2 pro classes.
These proposed pro rules are tentative, and will not be finalized until the GNCC Rider Meetings that follow the GNCC Awards Banquet on December 4-5. This allows the GNCC community time to view the rules and allow for a public comment period.
The most significant proposals highlighted are for the bike classes. Racer Productions has established a minimum age requirement that will be implemented over a one-year grace period. The 2010 minimum age requirement for the XC2 Pro Lites class will be 15 years old and 17 years old for the XC1 Class. In 2011, these ages will increase to 16 and 18 years old for the respective classes.
The second proposal for bikes allows the use of 250 two-strokes in the XC2 Pro Lites Class. This change is consistent with the AMA Amateur Racing Rulebook.
