RiderDown Foundation is teaming with the BlueRibbon Coalition at the Dealer Expo in Indy.

Courtesy of Rider Down Foundation

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (February 11, 2009) - This weekend, the RiderDown Foundation is teaming with the BlueRibbon Coalition at the Dealer Expo in Indy.

The RiderDown Foundation (RDF) has procured two vintage, metal signs which were inspired by Bruce Brown and the classic movie, “On Any Sunday”. The signs are framed in a white mat and will be displayed at the BlueRibbon Coalition (BRC) Booth on Saturday to gather autographs from a number of moto-heros. Saturday night, the pictures will travel to the Trail Rider Magazine/Wicked Motorsports party with Gonzo rider, Charlie Williams, for more signatures. Sunday it’s back to the show for more autographs. RDF hopes that Malcolm and others from On Any Sunday will be there to sign the actual metal signs, while other luminaries will autograph the outside mat border; creating what will truly become a collector’s piece. Every person who autographs the artwork will be carefully recorded (these champions know all about going fast, but signatures are often hard to read).

“We will have trouble parting with these,” stated Bruce Vermeulen of the RDF “but for the good of our causes we will forgo the temptation to sneak them onto our office wall. We are planning to auction both pieces off later to benefit both RiderDown.org and the BlueRibbon Coalition. So if you are approached at the dealer show to sign some metal signs with Bruce Brown’s name on them, be proud you made the cut and sign for the good of the sport!”

RDF would like to thank BRC for stepping up and helping with this, as well as Josh Williams, Director of Pandemonium at Old Bob’s (visit www.OldBobs.com) for coming up with this fantastic idea and handling all the details.

MIC: Massive grassroots effort needed to change CPSIA

Courtesy of Motorcycle Industry Council
IRVINE, Calif., Jan. 19, 2010 – The Motorcycle Industry Council (MIC) supports the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s recommendation to Congress to give the agency more flexibility to grant exclusions from the lead content limit to address certain products.  The CPSC requested this flexibility in its January 15 report to Congress containing recommendations to improve the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA).
“We are encouraged that the consensus report of all five Commissioners specifically mentions ATVs and dirtbikes, recognizing the dangers to riders caused by the current ban on youth motorcycles and ATVs,” said MIC general counsel, Paul Vitrano.
In addition to the consensus report, MIC is encouraged that CPSC Chairman Inez Tenenbaum also called on Congress to create a new “functional purpose” exclusion to the lead content limits.  This amendment would permit the Commission to grant exclusions for youth ATVs and motorcycles since lead in many accessible components is necessary for their functional purpose, contact with those components is infrequent and the elimination of lead is impracticable or impossible based on available scientific or technical information.
“It is clear that the CPSC strongly believes that the ban on youth model ATVs and motorcycles needs to end,” Vitrano also said.  “MIC calls on Congress to draft legislation as soon as possible to either grant a categorical exemption for these products, as provided by H.R. 1587, a pending bill with 55 bi-partisan co-sponsors, or to give the CPSC the flexibility to do so.”
In a Jan. 12 letter, the MIC thanked the CPSC for its efforts to promote youth safety by implementing a temporary stay to make some youth vehicles available despite the ban.  MIC also suggested three ways to completely or substantially exclude or exempt youth off-highway motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles from those provisions:
  1. a “functional purpose” amendment
  2. a categorical exemption, such as would be provided by H.R. 1587
  3. a change in the definition of “accessibility” for powersports products
Vitrano said it will again be critical for enthusiasts and industry to mount a massive grassroots effort targeting Congress to advocate for one of these amendments to the CPSIA.  In the coming days, MIC will be launching advocacy campaigns through www.stopthebannow.com .

New England Legend John Dowd Lands on Southwick Podium with the Help of Pirelli

New England Legend John Dowd Lands on Southwick Podium with the Help of Pirelli Scorpion MX Soft Tires

Rome, Ga. - Under consistent rain and treacherous conditions, MX-338 lived up to its billing as one of the most difficult circuits on the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship schedule. Known for producing spectacular rides over the years, last Saturday's MX-338 Motocross National was no different as semi-retired privateer John Dowd made his annual appearance at the national that he calls home. The Pirelli-backed 44-year old veteran showed what experience at the "Sandbox" can do, overcoming most of his considerably younger competition to land on the overall podium.

Dowd started the day with an impressive performance in practice and qualifying, posting the fourth fastest time overall and giving him a good gate pick for each of the motos. The track was a mixture between sand and mud with the considerable amount of moisture it absorbed, but the Scorpion MX Soft tires worked flawlessly, showcasing the outstanding versatility of Pirelli's premier off-road tire.

As the gate dropped on moto one, the Ludlow, Mass. native earned a start within the top 10, but a bobble on the second lap dropped him within the top 15 where he battled for the majority of the moto. He mustered a late surge over the final six laps to work his way up to 10th, giving him an opportunity at a solid overall finish for the day.

John Dowd (Courtesy Pirelli Tire)

In the second moto, Dowd got an even better start and took advantage of the good track position early, moving from eighth to fourth within seven laps. Quoted as saying he only had a good 20 minutes in him, the two-time Southwick winner continued to move forward, finding himself in second place on lap 10 and closing in on the leader. The multiple-second deficit proved too large to overcome and Dowd settled into the runner-up spot, bringing home the stellar moto result that vaulted him to third overall on the day.

The performance allowed Dowd to keep his permanent number of 16 for another year and gave Pirelli its best result of the 2009 season. Fellow Massachusetts rider Robby Marshall brought home fifth.

Additionally, newcomer Taylor Futrell helped promote the caliber of the privateer by finishing fifth overall in the 250 Class where he ran up at the front of the pack for most of the day.

Arai Adds New "Akira" Graphic To Off-Road Helmet Line

(Daytona, FL) Arai Helmets has added yet another new graphic design called the "Akira" to its VX-Pro3 off-road helmet line. Named for motocrosser Akira Narita, it is available now, in four different colors: Red, Blue, Silver, and Orange.

The new Akira is the latest of several mid-season-graphic additions to Arai's VX-Pro3 dirt model. The others are two Osborne Replicas (White and Black), and two Samurai graphics (White and Black),

Arai VX-Pro3 "Akira" off-road helmet

The VX-PRO3 was introduced to unprecedented rave reviews from the entire off-road publishing world, some even calling it "the best helmet ever tested." (Editor note: Full list of press reviews available upon request.)

Although now copied, the Pro3 introduced yet another Arai innovation: the Emergency-Release Cheek Pad system created to allow easier access to an injured rider.

Such concepts have always been one of Arai's "greatest sources of pride," according to a spokesman. "For generations, Arai has fostered helmet improvements that aid in our primary mission of first protecting the rider. We've never been a company that favors 'flash and fashion' over function, which is why Arai designs tend to be more evolutionary than revolutionary." Another example of this Arai philosophy evident in the Pro3 is its unique rounded chinbar shape with less forward protrusion. The shape's design intent is to make the chinbar less likely to catch and snag a crashing rider than longer, more pointed chinbars.

Arai's VX-PRO3 comes in sizes XS to XXL; suggested retails range from $529.95 for solids, to $659.95 for Replicas like the new Akira. For more information and complete details, see your Arai dealer or log onto www.AraiAmericas.com.
